Premium defenders appeal ahead of new Sky Sports Fantasy Football season

Fantasy managers looking to make the most of premium defenders might enjoy playing Sky Sports Fantasy Football this season.

Premium options at the back came to the fore in the 2017/18 instalment of the popular Fantasy game and there is every chance they could prove to be key assets this time around.

There were five defenders among Sky Sports Fantasy‘s top 10 point-scorers last season, a new record and more than any other position.

With Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola bringing possession football and hugely attacking full-backs to the Premier League, Andrew Robertson (12 assists) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (11 assists) impressed in 2018/19.

However, it was their Dutch colleague Virgil van Dijk who stole the headlines, finishing both as the top-scoring defender in Sky Sports Fantasy Football last season and the highest scorer in any position.

His 299 points, averaging 7.9 per match were recorded as van Dijk won the Champions League, PFA Player of the Year and helped his national side to reach the UEFA Nations League final.

His statistics in Sky Sports Fantasy Football led to him offering an excellent captain option most weeks too, which is why he is expected to be popular again in 2019/20.

Van Dijk kept a total of 20 clean sheets and scored four goals while also performing well for bonus points. He hit tier-one and tier-two passing bonus points on a combined total of 27 occasions.

Fantasy Football Scout Members can access the passing bonus statistics for Sky in the Members Area.

Ahead of the new season, they can also analyse which players look best for tackle bonus as well.

Aymeric Laporte, who came second overall, managed to do hit bonus an impressive 28 times, with 25 of those coming from tier two (70 or more passes in a single game).

That contributed an additional 75 points to his overall tally of 269 in 2018/19. The Frenchman scored 30.57 points-per-million (£8.8m last year), more than any other player, proving a valuable and pivotal pick for Sky Sports Fantasy Football bosses.

As you can see, Manchester City and Liverpool’s exciting title challenge last year heralded a new era in Sky Sports Fantasy Football, with the focus shifting more towards defenders.

Cesar Azpilicueta was the only defender to rank inside the top 10 points scorers in 2016/17, finishing in ninth position.

In fact, the Spanish international was the first defender in the history of the game to achieve this feat and he has since repeated it in both of the two most recent seasons.

From 2016 to 2019, Azpilicueta has amassed an impressive total of 669 points highlighting the point-pulling power that centre-backs or full-backs (he has played in both positions) now possess.

In 2017/18, just four points separated Nicolas Otamendi (244) and Cesar Azpilicueta (240) as they took up the fourth and fifth positions respectively. Otamendi registered 14 clean sheets and found the back of the net four times, while Azpilicueta capped 15 clean sheets with two goals and assists. Both players earned valuable Sky Sports Fantasy Football points from unlikely and underestimated positions.

With the emphasis more than ever on defenders, there is enough value in each player to be convinced that they are worth researching as much as the attacking stars.

Their point-scoring has increased year-on-year; who knows what the top five or 10 players in Sky Sports Fantasy Football will look like in 12 months’ time?

You're wrong. Leicester shipped all kinds of goals last year. Ok De Gea an improvement on Schmeichel but all in all Ole is an attacking manager and they still will ship some goals.

You can't deny he's an upgrade on Smalling, Jones and Bailly with his 6 month injury.

Not denying that. But they'll still concede enough to not warrant them as an option.

Matic is past it, McTominay as still unproven in the role really. So they are going to be susceptible to a break away and every team in the prem his a lot of pace up top.

They'll do well to finish 8th and it won't be because they aren't scoring goals.

Good team. I don’t like siggy though. Usually doesn’t have an explosive start.. is your heart set on him?!

Not sure I see value in Ake at 5, no Bournemouth defender should ever be higher than 4.5. If you lowered ake you could actually upgrade VVD to robbo.

Apart from that it’s all good to me!

Hard to say at this stage.

Seems like Blades boss Chris Wilder is hedging his bets on having a number of potential forwards who’ve all been on his radar in the Championship.

This might come off for them rather all your eggs in the basket of one forward from abroad.

Personally I'd take a look at the two Saints forwards Adams and Ings. Saints will be playing a high pressing game this year, oh we will ship at the back, that's for sure but I can just see these two working together well and with good midfield feeders they could be banging them in from the start. I'm torn between them, at the moment I'm on Ings but that may change.

    Sky Sports Team

    Ederson
    VVD, TAA, Robertson, Guilbert
    Deulofeu, Jota, Brooks, Teilemans
    Salah (c), Sterling

0.5m ITB, to bring in Kane for either Salah or Sterling when fixtures permit (so will have 3 premium forwards most weeks).

Heaton to villa for 9m. Strengthens a lot Def AVFC options. For me Targett is the best due to prem experience, looks nailed and has shown to have goal involvement. I would monitor the RB position if Guilbert starts he could be a bargain too.

that's the thing, i think arsenal could pick any 2 fullbacks in the world and still be a dodgy defence with their CBs and xhaka when he's in his own half

I've never been quite convinced by the no value in premium forwards argument that informs the template. And I think I now know the answer to who scored better over the season last time between Sterling and Kane/Kun. It's intriguing.

If you played Kane first half of the season up to GW22 when he got injured and then made the logical switch to Kun in 23 who was just returning from injury there was essentially zero difference in returns. By my maths

    Sterling 234 points
    Kane Kun 234 points

This isn't a rogue selection btw it's the move I made!!! Kane up to GW22 matched Sterling almost exactly despite DM status (@Amey)

Premium forwards in other words are not necessarily worse assets than premium mids. Yes of course you can switch premium mids around to boost returns too but given there is no Hazard and Mane is blocked by double defence and Salah, there really isn't that much scope there this time around with 3 premium mids two of which play for the same team. If you want to switch Sterling where do you go?

Forgot to add the obvious side note. This season Kane Kun is cheaper than Sterling - the value has switched around,

I appear to be in the minority in remembering how he finished the season. He's a horrid captain choice imo. Here goes his last 12 weeks:

Perma captain Mo cost people heaps when they refused to move off him mid late season. He's also only an average away captain. If you start with him as perma cap you are relying on 2017/8 form or just accepting you will not give yourself the chance of best captain every other week.

He was a horrid captain choice for several weeks though. My worst keep by a distance 😉 End of season value doesn't sway me. I'm much more interested in being able to move onto the right premiums at the right time - as it happens those are likely to be forwards often.

You too. Good luck with Son captaincies.

And well part of my point is that Kun Kane taken together are value and offer an alternative captain route closed off by the template. It's the single player set and forget end of season value that doesn't influence me. When we get to GW30 say very few teams will have more than 3 players who haven't switched out,

You'd switch Sterling to Kev or Sane, wouldn't you?
Does your scenario basically apply to Kane and Auba only, at this point (discounting the newbies not yet added)?

I've got 2 drafts - one Salah+Sterling and the other Sterling+Kane. Still trying to decide which is the one I'm going forward with.

Why switch to another premium in the same team in the same position. You'd only do that with an injury surely.

This season is different for no Hazard offering a 3rd team with a premium midfield choice. Also as I noted above few are going to be able to go Mane without a significant reboot.

"Why switch to another premium in the same team in the same position. You'd only do that with an injury surely."

I thought that's what you meant. If Sterling were injured or dropped you'd replace him with another Citizen. Unless City slumped to mid table, but that's a scenario I'm not contemplating.

Not arguing against Sterling at all - it's the obsession with both perma Mo Sterling that I don't believe in. It limits you to 2 teams to captain and excludes Arsenal and Spurs who are both likely high scorers against the bottomed teams.

Generally City and Liverpool will give you good captain choices but on a fairly regular basis they won't give you the ostensibly best option. GW2 coming up is a case in point where neither Mo nor Sterling are more than average looking options imo. Down the line if a new Fulham Huddersfield appears then the issue becomes more noted. If you have no premium forward spot you're blocked.

he was their best keeper, that's the big unknown. a year out is a long time for a keeper, look at someone like courtois before and after his long injury.
was only a year ago that the same manager kept heaton on the bench for ages after his injury issues. it worries me that pope hasn't been given every single heaton-less minute given he's dying for gametime to re-find that lost mojo

elmo if he was nailed but looks far too risky.
femenia has assists in him but how can you trust the watford defence even for 4.5. such slim pickings, players i'm noticing in 'the template' like taylor at burnley i'm wincing at, but then struggling to come up with alternatives. one of those situations where you're annoyed because fpl have done a good job with pricing them

I think Laporte is the best Man city defender to begin the season with as it is easier to downgrade him to another one later on - that change could potential also include Hudson-Odoi when fit to my team:

    Heaton
    Robertson, TAA, Digne, Laporte
    Salah, Sterling, Fraser, Perez
    Wilson, Greenwood

    4.0, McGinn, Lundstram, Nketiah

Don’t see why you would have a 5.5 mid on your bench and a questionable 4.5 attacker starting. I’d look to get vardy over greenwood, which yes - will take some tinkering.

That's asking a lot, do you at least know what formation you'd like to play?

      To answer what you've asked,

There is no real outstanding option at 4.5 in defence, most teams I've seen have had Fredericks, Targett, Lascelles, Taylor (burn), Chambers/Holding as a punt, Adam Smith (bou)
at 4.0 Lundstram (shu) has played a lot of preseason minutes, but some still doubt he'll start PL games.

      4.5 mids - Dendonker, Hayden
5.0 mids - Norwood (takes set pieces for SHU), Jorginho, Kante the best of the bunch.

Forwards - you need to spend at least 6m to get a starting players, Ings, Adams (sou) Wesley (villa) Joelinton (new) probably the best options.

        Thanks mate!

Formation wise it would either be 451 or 541 with Kane up top!
Cheers for all the 4.0s & 4.5s that I'll take into consideration.

My main draft doesn't have Kane in but after seeing him yesterday i feel he's going to bag a few early doors.

Hows this for a differential team? Hear me out on Ozil, with the signing of Pepe I think it helps him create more chances and become more of an attacking threat, having said that he could easily be Fraser, but it's a risk I'm taking

Robertson / Van Dijk / Luiz
