Summer signings may be key to Everton’s FPL appeal

Our latest Numbers Game article focuses on Everton, who many Fantasy managers are backing in their droves ahead of some appealing fixtures in the first 13 Gameweeks of 2019/20.

The Toffees sit top our Season Ticker over this time, meeting only two of the ‘big six’ between now and the end of December.

Not one of their first six away fixtures is against a side that finished in the top half of the Premier League in 2018/19.

The Numbers Game series delves into the underlying attacking and defensive statistics of last season and is only available for Members to read.

    Need Couple of suggestions:

1)Is penalty taker Barkley a good shout at that price ??
2)Best 5.0£ defender to start with
AMN/zouma/KWP/Ake or any? Or should I go with two rotating 4.5's instead of 5.0£ ??
    3)
    A) kane + wood in 4-4-2
    Or,
    B) KDB + Wilson in 4-5-1

      1) If he is nailed... even if he is nailed I can see him getting subbed for Mount often which is annoying
      2) I'd like to say Zouma or Ake - I have 2 rotating atm because squad depth other than them is shocking (non playing 4.5m forward and Dendonk who I can't expect much from - I expect Wolves to rotate a lot too with Europa)
      3) B

Ake no. Bournemouth conceded most away goals in league last season. They haven't improved defence and have some injuries

People say Woods and Barnes could be a rotation threat but I don't agree

JRod can play up top, as a number 10 and on either wing... because of that I'd say he is the most nailed

Furthermore, he has played top 5 most minutes for Burnley in pre-season along with the likes of Cork, Gudmonsson, and Tarkowski (other nailed players)...

    repost.
Kane or KDB (could be son later) + 1.5?

Every draft I make is fairly similar with this as the main difference. Kane obviously gives me another captaincy option but seems like a luxury as I'd be happy captaining salah/sterling (switching with transfers depending on form and fixtures) most weeks. Son and Vardy would be the alternative captaincy options if I go without Kane, and although they might seem a bit punty it is generally easy to tell when they are on form. Am worried Kane will be back to his best this season though, especially since their home games aren't at wembley anymore. I'm also expecting that Ndombele will help Kane as he won't need to drop back as much.

I am going with both of them but without Sterling.

Cheers for the reply! I'm going without sterling from the start but will likely do salah to sterling at some point depending on form and fixtures. I'll be using transfers to switch between them here and there because I think it's better value to just have one at a time. I'm debating between having kane or kdb (who could later be son) as an alternative captaincy option in case of a rest or if I don't like Salah/Sterling's fixture or if I don't want to use a transfer to switch between salah and sterling as I'll want to switch back next week. Kane is obviously a better captaincy option but he won't be getting captained that often and provides worse value

I like it apart from Pope and Siggy

      Pope - is he 100% nailed - I don't know if I've missed something

Siggy - pre-season are friendlies on the face of it... but if a team can't even win in pre-season, how can they suddenly start winning and scoring in a real league game?
That kind of form turn when the season starts is possible... but not likely, and we're playing a probabilities game

          • 5 Years

          No for 6 reasons

          1) they've faced better quality opposition
          1) they've won more than 1 game
          3) they're missing many key players
          4) they just won the CL
          5) 6 times la

Pope is definitely ahead of Hart when he's not injured. Siggy is a bit annoying to own as he is hard to predict but he always has scored well long term. I don't read much into the results in preseason. Also I think the addition of Kean will make him even more appealing

can't Solanke with Wilson start with King wing?

        1. JohnnyMagrinho
            4 years, 8 months ago

He's being involved in pre-season and was always seen as being someone who had potential at Pool. Never worked out for him with the big boys, obviously.

I'm Solanke might get some game time but I'd be thinking at the expense of Wilson or King.

Bournemouth have some good wide players - I don't see why they'd feel the need to use King so out of position.

I think for £5m, depending on your formation and who you intend to play going forward, he seems a very, very likeable option.

It.s £0.5m more expensive than the useless "will play every week" Dendoncker who will you get you points, but they'll be all on your bench, forever. There's a chance this £5m might actually translate into points.

Who knows. It's all guess work at this point anyway. Just seems quite tempting.

          1. JohnnyMagrinho
              4 years, 8 months ago

There's very little else on offer for £5m. It's the second cheapest option for a midfielder. It's just a suggestion regarding a £6.5m player's place being up for grabs and he's a name who could potentially fill it.

My original post was kind of in jest to some degree. I wasn't expecting so many serious replies saying how ridiculous it was.

I like some of the Villa midfielders as they're cheap and I'm confident of a top ten finish for Villa, but I don't think they'll hit the ground running.

I do like how certain everyone seems to be of all the best players to choose at this stage of the season.

This place is always good for laugh. Seems I'm surrounded by absolute experts.

Bournemouth have terrible fixtures. Sheffield are solid. We will smash them then it's City Leicester Everton

            1. JohnnyMagrinho
                4 years, 8 months ago

Way too much focus on fixtures (and you are getting a bit too pro-Villa in like, every post).

Who cares if they lose. They need to score. They will. It's an option. for £5m. I'm not trying to compare him to anyone of any note. I'm just saying we have a £6.5m player who was in many people's teams now leaving a void for a significantly cheaper player to step into.

I do like McGinn and all the other Villa midfielders and looking at Wesley too, but again, this is just an idea, nothing too definitive.

Way too many opinions being flung around like fact in here. Getting a bit odd to see people so wrapped up in the hivemind to even contemplate something different.

Some Chelsea attack pointers I suppose since I see these questions keep popping up. A bit long sorry! Feel free to only read the parts you're considering lol (order is Barkley/Mount; Pulisic, Pedro, strikers, Jorginho, a bit on defence). A tl;dr at the end too.

-> I would AVOID Barkley, Mount, Jorginho or any of the strikers because of rotation. Remember the Pedro/Willian rotation? Or the Spurs full-back rotation? That's pretty much what Barkley/Mount, the strikers and to a lesser extent Kovacic/Jorginho is shaping up to be.

-> Mount and Barkley won't play together. As long as Pulisic is around, he'll play. Either as a LW, or #10 in a 4-diamond-2. Same with Kante. Mount meanwhile is significantly less equipped than Jorginho/Kovacic to partner Kante (Red Bulls tore our midfield in that last 15 mins). Thus it's one of these two.

-> It looks like Barkley will start at OT, but let's be realistic it's still Man Utd (and we aren't world beaters). At best, you can hope for Chelsea to get 2 goals away there I suppose. Unless Barkley scores one of those, how likely would he be to start the next couple of games?

-> To that end, Mount came with first-team assurances. Unless Barkley gets braces (and if he does, props to those who took the risk), Mount is very likely to get a game in the first three. Also, the main negative for me is that whichever one of them starts; is pretty likely to be hooked off on 65 minutes for the other - reducing bonus potential as well. None of the competitors in FPL have this big a caveat (Perez is just 0.5 mil above and practically a second striker half the time).

-> Pulisic on the other hand has played at LW every game. With Willian out for the first game probably, and Pedro on the right; Pulisic has a clear run (at the same position) to atleast the first few starts. After that, it is very likely Willian will rotate in for Pedro for a game or two. At that point, if Pulisic has dropped 4-5 stinkers, he'll probably be benched for Willian/Pedro or the returning Hudson-Odoi. In any case, if that happened; you'd have probably transferred out Pulisic by then since he isn't hard to remove like Hazard 15/16 was. Pulisic is as nailed as you could be as of now in Chelsea.

-> Pulisic has Man Utd away and Leicester at home as his first two at 7.5m. There's tough competition with Ryan Fraser and Lucas Moura's fixtures to justify him in the team (I'm finding it hard to look beyond Fraser). If you do choose him though, there's a big upside. 7.5% ownership as of now, if he scores even one goal in those two games; he's on for a big rise. He also made a lot of forward runs for over the top balls (as opposed to coming deep like Hazard/Willian), and scored two goals while being anonymous mostly apart from that. Big difference from Hazard completely bossing a game, having 76 takeons in a half while creating five big chances, a 10.0 on whoscored and yet ending with one FPL assist and only 6 points.

-> Pedro could be a punt, but there's a bit less appeal than Sarriball since he's a bit deeper and I'm not sure how wise it would be with Ayoze Perez the same price and not a transfer waiting to happen.

-> In terms of strikers, I wouldn't touch Giroud since I doubt his ability to play 90 mins consistently. Batshuayi and Abraham both will be incredible value if they lock down a spot given their finishing, but Chelsea strikers aren't always great so I would wait given all the decent options at 6.5. Right now this feels a lot like a slightly better version of Ba/Eto'o/Torres. There's no telling who is starting the first game since I can make decent arguments for all three. And whoever starts, I'm not entirely sure if they'll start the next game. Given there's so many other places to plan GW2/GW3 transfers, I'd avoid this mess until it settles down a bit. Very unlikely we'll have get goals every game in any case like Costa with those fixtures.

-> On the 2 CMs, Kante is nailed. Jorginho and Kovacic will rotate probably, and it's a toss-up since they're both ill-fitted but doing an adequate job.

-> There is a chance that if Jorginho starts in the first game and does really well, he may stake a spot for consecutive starts; but on a whole unlikely to get 4-5 starts without being benched a couple of times. This is a bit similar to cases of John Stones, a Tottenham fullback, Joel Matip, Lucas Moura etc except in this case; we don't even know if he's nailed to start GW1. Avoid for me, more secure 5.0 enablers around (perhaps when Kante comes back for the final game we'll have a clue if Lampard has a specific role in mind that one fits better)

P.S. If you were considering a def, Azpi, Kepa, Luiz should be good. Emerson is as nailed as Zinchenko is. Will start most games, but will also get benched for some. Not sure between Zouma/Christensen since Rudiger is out until mid-Sept. Zouma is probably the best defender we have (he's marshalled Aguero/Kane etc), but he looked shaky today and isn't as integrated into the squad as Christensen for a tough first game; so I'm not sure. That said, Christensen hasn't been too convincing too since late 2017/18. Generally though, if you do trust one of them to start - I wouldn't be too worried about conceding 3 goals, still have Kante to come and we have actual forwards who can press now in Mount/Tammy/Pulisic rather than the painful times of Hazard and Higuain trying to press Man City. I also think Lampard's 4-2-3-1 will be a lot less broken than Sarri's 4-3-3 in defending

            --

Tl;dr again: If you really want Pulisic, cool move. Else avoid all Chelsea attack unless you're very early WC-ing and are confident in your player starting GW1 (and doing well in that GW) or content with a toss-up on if he starts.

The one thing is Lampards new so it's entirely possible he's got some big difference to what we tend to see.

The most likely Alonso scenario I could see is he could do is asking Azpi to lock down one flank and letting Alonso be the out ball like Ivanovic was in 14/15.

I don't think it'll happen and there haven't been a lot of signs we're going back to those days (No Matic, Terry and Fabregas too) but beyond that Emerson seems far more suited to a 4man backline

I think Barkley is far more assured of starts than you're leading on. I agree he will probably regularly get subbed for Mount, but not at 65, that's some Sarri crap. There's also no way he gets dropped after one game if he doesn't score, and remember how bad United defence was last season? Realistically for a few years now bar De Gea brilliance. Lampard has said that Mount and Barkley can potentially play together in the diamond (Barkley at the top and Mount on the left), but I don't expect that too often. Mount's 'assured game time' is as a sub, in secondary competitions, and around fixture congestion.
Pulisic is definitely guaranteed every game, but he'll be subject to subs when Odoi is back as well.
Tammy is definitely the intended first choice striker but a few bad games changes that very fast, not much between them at the moment which makes it a risk not worth taking. Doesn't have anything to do with previous strikers though.
I agree Zouma is probably the best defender, and Luiz has to be in there for the experience. I like Christiansen but he's had a few too many errors since that fk up sideways pass that knocked us out of the Champions League two years ago.

You obviously haven't watched any of Chelsea's preseason. He's been smashing it in the 10 role. His assists today were ridiculous, and if he's confirmed on pens that's a guaranteed 5+ extra goals.

We have been pretty good lately. Have just conceded one goal. And with Maguire coming in we'll be more solid at the back.

If he is on penalties (count 5 goals) , he'll end up with 7 goals in the league at the end of the season

That's crap and you know it. He got more goals than that in a third of the season in the completely wrong position. Get out of here with that crap.
And what does United's preseason have to do with anything? That's one game, and United have played three completely useless teams anyways. Maguire is far from a done deal, United don't have that kind of money to throw around anymore.

Well Barkley's performance in "pre season" Is good, and hence he should be considered for playing against all the teams which are 7 level below Chelsea but United's defence being good in preseason which includes some top sides has got to do nothing.

            Pope
            taa vvd Laporte coleman
            Salah Kdb Siggy Fraser
            Vardy delefeou.

            4.0 dendonks greenwood 4.0

Hows this look? this is more like an option b which ive got, main difference is heavier defence, no kane and a more even spread of funds in the 11

I think it's about time for the annual "Is Barkley a trap?" question. So...

            1. Yes
            2. No

            Go.

Is Wilson and King double up crazy or considering their fixtures viable?

if Kean is 7.0 do you try and find the 0.5?

highly doubt keen would be 7.0.. don't see any reason why he wouldn't be as much as richarlison. But if so then yeah, i would!

List their first 6 fixtures. King scored 3 away last season. Sheffield aren't a push over and I think Villa will beat them easy first home game. So...

            Which way to go:
            A) Ederson, Digne, Grealish
            B) Pickford, Walker, Lanzini
            C) Ederson, Zouma, Zaha/Anderson

West Ham's games after RD1 look good
