Injuries to FPL defenders as Wood hits second pre-season hat-trick

Our pre-season coverage continues with a look at the lessons learned from three games contested on Tuesday.

Manchester United left it late to see off Kristiansund, while there were wins for Burnley and Newcastle United.

We’ll round up all the main talking points – including a treble for Chris Wood (£6.5m) and injuries to two mid-priced Fantasy Premier League defenders – in the Scout Notes article below.

Kristiansund 0-1 Manchester United

  • Goals: Juan Mata (£6.5m)
  • Assists: None

There was a curious choice of penalty taker as Manchester United saw off Norwegian side Kristiansund with a stoppage-time spot-kick.

Despite Paul Pogba (£8.5m) being on the pitch, it was fellow substitute Juan Mata (£6.5m) who stepped up to convert from 12 yards after the Spaniard had himself been brought down – Pogba having provided a superb through-ball to Mata just before the foul.

Therein may lie the answer: the fact that Mata won the penalty may have earned him the right to take the subsequent spot-kick, with any penalty-taking hierarchy temporarily forgotten due to this game being a meaningless pre-season friendly.

Mata hasn’t taken a Premier League penalty in almost four years, although he did net from 12 yards in the FA Cup win over Reading earlier in 2019.

Mata had indeed been fouled for that penalty against the Royals, while Pogba wasn’t in the team.

Line-up Lessons

Solskjaer has used 27 players in pre-season but we may finally be inching closer to the Norwegian’s favoured starting XI and system.

With the exception of Pogba (who had dropped to the bench after sitting out a training session), one could justifiably argue that United’s team against Kristiansund was close to the one that will take on Chelsea in Gameweek 1.

The contrast between Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) and Scott McTominay‘s (£5.0m) performances in central midfield perhaps suggested that the Serbian midfielder may make way for Pogba, with McTominay impressing in a box-to-box role and striking the woodwork in the first half.

Dan James (£6.0m) started on the right wing as Marcus Rashford (£8.5m) and Anthony Martial (£7.5m) frequently traded places in-game between the left flank and the lone striker’s role.

Rashford said of this tactical approach:

It’s never been my aim to be a number nine. It’s about being able to adapt and play in different positions and to be the ultimate forward. I think I can score goals from all positions and I think that’s something that’s shared among the forwards.

If one person is scoring all the goals you get a different feeling as a team than if all the forwards are contributing. It’s definitely a good feeling and it keeps us all on our toes. That’s important.

Jesse Lingard (£6.5m) operated in the hole in a 4-2-3-1, meanwhile.

Full-backs Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw (both £5.5m) again spent most of their time camped in the opposition half as the hosts’ attacking forays were few and far between.

When asked about his Gameweek 1 line-up, Solskjaer replied:

It’s not about one team for the first game and that’s the team for the rest of the season. We’ve got a strong squad and I feel there’s not too big a difference when we make the subs. We’re going to have to find the right balance. I’ve not really picked the first XI yet, but most of the relationships we’ve tried. Milan will be another last test and then let’s see how we decide. I think when Paul Pogba doesn’t start, I think you know it’s not the first XI.

Struggle for goals

United weren’t shot-shy in Norway: Solskjaer’s side chanced their arm on 32 occasions, with ten of them landing on target.

Rashford stung the palms of the hosts’ goalkeepers on three occasions with efforts from distance (one a direct free-kick) but there weren’t too many clear-cut chances carved out by the Red Devils, in spite of the high number of saves made.

Solskjaer said after full-time:

I’ve said before in press conferences that we need to be more clinical. That’s where you win games. I think we’re looking solid at the back. They had a great chance early in the second half and we should have done better.

We’re going to keep working, keep improving, keep making the relationships between the players and the patterns work even better. It’s not a concern but it’s something we’re going to have to improve on.

Injury Blow

The expected bad news about Eric Bailly (£5.0m) came in Solskjaer’s post-match press conference.

The Ivorian defender was a casualty of United’s 2-1 win over Spurs last week and his manager provided an update on Tuesday night:

He’s had an operation. He’ll miss the best part of four or five months. Hopefully, we’ll get him back around about Christmas.

It was positive news from the surgeon, he had the operation this morning. He was positive it was all repaired and that he’ll be fine.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea (Romero 60′), Wan-Bissaka (Dalot 60′), Jones (Tuanzebe 60′), Lindelof (Rojo 60′), Shaw (Young 60)’, Matic (Pogba 60′), McTominay (Fred 60′), James (Andreas 60′), Lingard (Mata 60′), Martial (Chong 60), Rashford (Greenwood 60′).

Burnley 6-1 Nice

  • Goals: Chris Wood (£6.5m) x3, Jeff Hendrick (£5.5m), Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m), Jay Rodriguez (£6.0m)
  • Assists: Ashley Barnes x2 (£6.5m), Gudmundsson, Ben Mee (£5.0m), Matthew Lowton (£4.5m)

No Premier League player has scored more pre-season goals than Chris Wood (£6.5m) this summer.

The Burnley striker has found the back of the net on nine occasions in six friendly appearances, although the large caveat is that his previous half-dozen strikes before Tuesday evening’s treble were all against opponents from the Football League.

Patrick Vieira’s Nice side were supposed to present more of a challenge to the Clarets in their latest pre-season encounter but the Ligue I club were 4-0 down at the break, with Wood having scored two of the goals.

The mid-price FPL forward pounced on a loose ball to open the scoring before tapping in a Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m) cut-back to double the hosts’ advantage.

Both of Wood’s opening two strikes were characteristically from inside the six-yard box; no other Premier League player had more efforts from this zone of the pitch in 2018/19.

Wood had further opportunities to add to his tally but completed his hat-trick after the interval, intercepting an awful pass from a Nice defender – just one of umpteen errors from the French side at Turf Moor – and firing into a half-unguarded net.

Goals Abound

Jeff Hendrick (£5.5m), Gudmundsson and substitute Jay Rodriguez (£6.0m) were also on target for the home side.

A well-worked free-kick saw Hendrick control a Ben Mee (£5.0m) header and fire past Yoan Cardinale for Burnley’s third, before Gudmundsson’s speculative effort beat the visiting goalkeeper all too easily on 35 minutes.

Rodriguez came off the bench to finish a Matthew Lowton (£4.5m) cross to round off the scoring.

Ashley Barnes (£6.5m) wasn’t among the goalscorers but claimed the assists for Burnley’s first and fourth strikes.

Competition for Places

Sean Dyche used 20 different players in Lancashire on Tuesday and both he and Wood highlighted the competition for places in the Burnley squad.

The New Zealander said:

It looks like we’ve got two players in each position and it’s a fight for places. Everybody is putting their hands up and it making it hard for the manager, which is a good thing for us.

The boys that have come in – Jay and Erik (Pieters) – have done fantastically well and fitted in brilliantly, so they’re good additions so far.

Dyche added:

I thought the attention to detail, the shape, the energy and the quality were all excellent. Those are the things you are after and the over-riding thing is the players are looking fit and sharp and that was on show as well.

There is definitely a good feel and a really competitive edge about the group and we want that to continue, so I must look at that for the weekend because you want that hunger going into the last week.

There were a lot of really strong performances and people coming off the bench affected the game as well.

The good thing is we have a really good, competitive squad and the way we have balanced their minutes allows us to look at options.

On top of the players used on Tuesday, the Clarets were still without the injured Robbie Brady (£5.5m), Ben Gibson (£4.0m) and Nick Pope (£4.5m).

Goalkeeper Uncertainty

With only one pre-season game remaining before Gameweek 1, we are still not much closer to resolving the Burnley goalkeeper situation.

With Pope sidelined, Tom Heaton and Joe Hart (both £4.5m) were each handed 45 minutes against Nice.

The rumours surrounding Heaton’s long-mooted move to Aston Villa intensified on Wednesday, however, and the 33-year-old goalkeeper seems to set to sign for the newly promoted Midlands club in the coming hours.

With Pope’s injury situation not thought to be too serious but ultimately still unclear, Hart may well be on standby to line up between the posts in Gameweek 1 – as happened 12 months ago.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Heaton (Hart 46′), Bardsley (Lowton 75), Long (Tarkowski 46′), Mee (Dunne 69′), Pieters (Taylor 75′), Lennon (Rodriguez 69′), Westwood (Cork 69′), Hendrick, Gudmundsson (McNeil 46′), Wood (Wells 83′), Barnes.

Hibernian 1-3 Newcastle United

  • Goals: Joelinton (£6.0m), Sean Longstaff (£5.0m), Jamaal Lascelles (£4.5m)
  • Assists: Javier Manquillo (£4.5m), Joelinton, Rolando Aarons

Matt Ritchie (£5.5m) handed Newcastle United an injury scare in Tuesday night’s pre-season friendly in Leith.

Ritchie limped from the field after just 11 minutes of the Magpies’ 3-1 win over Hibs, having previously dropped to the ground with no opponent around him.

Steve Bruce said after full-time:

We hope it’s not serious. That’s the awful thing tonight because we’re a bit shy in that area. He’ll have a scan in the next 48 hours and hopefully, it’s not too bad.

He’s nicked a hamstring. Whether it’s a strain or how serious it is, we do not know. But for him to come off is not a good sign.

The Evening Chronicle reported on Wednesday that the injury isn’t as serious as first feared, although this hasn’t yet been verified by the club.

The 3-5-2/5-3-2 Continues

Ritchie was again occupying the same position as he did last season, as the left-sided wing-back in a 3-5-2/5-3-2.

Rolando Aarons – yet to be priced up by FPL – was the man given the nod to replace Ritchie in that role and crossed for Jamaal Lascelles (£4.5m) to head in United’s third goal of the evening.

United’s midfield three was made up of budget FPL options Isaac Hayden (£4.5m), Sean Longstaff (£5.0m) and Jonjo Shelvey (£5.0m) and there was a sense that, the goalkeeper aside, this was about as strong a starting XI that Newcastle could possibly put out at present, accounting for injuries.

Joelinton (£6.0m) made his full Magpies debut and was joined up front for the second game running by an ‘out of position’ Miguel Almiron (£6.0m).

Almiron has not quite convinced in front of goal in his time on Tyneside and he is yet to find the back of the net for the Magpies either in a competitive match or a friendly, having missed from the spot in the 2-1 defeat to Preston on Saturday.

Against Hibs, the Paraguay international again missed a couple of excellent opportunities as his barren run continued.

Almiron otherwise linked up well with Joelinton, who was arguably the pick of United’s players with his physical hold-up play and promising movement.

The Brazilian striker got off the mark for Newcastle when converting Javier Manquillo‘s (£4.5m) cross from close range and then claimed a Fantasy assist when his blocked shot fell to Longstaff, who fired in from the edge of the box.

Bruce said of his new strike partnership:

All strikers want to score, let’s hope this is one of many. He is up and running, you can see the huge appetite in the boy (Joelinton).

They’re a threat and they’ve already enjoyed playing with each other, you can see that straight away. They will be a threat to anybody. They both can run and they complement each other.

They could be a little bit more clinical but overall I was very, very pleased with the performance of the two of them.

Goalkeeper Situation

Martin Dubravka (£5.0m) missed his second successive Newcastle game but Bruce poured cold water on the rumours circulating that the Slovakian wanted a move away from Tyneside.

Speaking after the match, Bruce said:

Dubravka is fine. He’s at home. It was always our aim to give the two other lads 90 minutes. Martin will be in goal in Saturday.

He is our number one goalkeeper and will remain so. The stuff that’s circulating about him is not true, there’s nothing sinister going on at all.

Newcastle United XI (5-3-2): Darlow, Manquillo (Sterry 77), Lascelles, Dummett (Clark 71), Schar (Fernandez 77), Ritchie (Aarons 11), Hayden, Shelvey (M Longstaff 77), S.Longstaff (Ki 60), Almiron (Murphy 69), Joelinton (Muto 69).

      Deulofeu vs cardiff/Huddersfield = 60 points in 4 games
Deulofeu vs everyone else = 76 points in 23 games

This was as a midfielder... Doesnt guarantee anything of course, but something to bear in mind... Just like Siggy, he bloody loves a good blank or 20

I'd have one bench option though in my 4.5 defender. I admit it is not the best situation but all of my starting 11 players should start every week and I never would really want to bench them anyway.

Moura is probably nailed for first 2 GWs, but GW2 is MCI away so you'd probably want to ship him before that.

Why not go with Fraser instead for same price?

Lots of people with double BOU. Admittedly Fraser + Wilson is the best combo (see their partnership stats).
It just depends how you want to use your transfers. Moura is GW1 + a probably 2pts then a transfer out.

On the flip side, maybe he scores a hattie in GW1, loads of casuals get him in and he increases 0.5m....

GW3 and tossing up GW1. He has 2 goals and an assist in his last 3 pre season starts. Salah still sketchy after AFCON. Not sure I’ve got the balls to do it though. Can always get Sterling with an early WC if need be

Yeah fair enough, I'll probably go with the crowd and captain Salah regardless.
Good point RE Kane's preseason vs Salah's though. I don't love Wilson so if I liked any of the 6.5/6 FWDs I'd join you. Would ideally go 4-5-1 and punt on Gross/Trossard/Barkley/ etc, but Dendonker is such a banker as first sub.

As an Everton fan, not sold on Siggurdson/Richarlison? Is it because of the preseason form? I fancy the pants off of Bernie Silva but that 8m slot is fairly competitive.

Not a huge fan of any of Kane, KDB, Bilva for FPL - all for different reasons - but all could do fantastically well of course

I think Wesley is a bigger gamble than Ings (and that's saying something!) assuming Ings continues to come through pre season unscathed

Coleman outscoring both Digne & Siggy year to date (from less games than both!) suggests to me he's finally back to captain fantastic mode, had put the leg break behind him once and for all, and can continue where he left off with his 180 point season a few years back

Zinky looks a risk but equally could be absolutely stupendous value if he nails the slot... I've gone Laporte myself for hopefully lower maintenance although apparently he's got a knock now

Everton's lack of goals pre season is alarming plus siggy scoring is historically very erratic - not sure i've the patience

A few questions for the experts who do well year after year........

    1. Do you rotate goalkeepers or stick with one for the season?
    2. Do you pick a team for the whole season and make changes when necessary, or do you plan a team for smaller periods eg. six game weeks at a time?
    3. Do you rotate captain choice, or stick with the same captain every game week?

I feel like I have a good team for the season, however I like the idea of trying to capture players in form, which usually correlates to fixtures. This would also make the game more interesting having a variety of different players throughout the season instead of having the same players every week. The flip side to this is begin frustrated when you miss players hot streaks and get rotation all wrong.

Example- The end of last season, Chris Wood was scoring goals and getting points, I have had him in mind and after his pre-season form and the fact he may be on pens makes me tempted to have him for the whole season knowing he will pick up points in spells throughout. However, Burnley have a tough set of fixtures to start, so do I try and be clever and have someone like Deeney for the first 4 games, as Watford have better fixtures, and then swap for Wood when Burnley's fixtures improve?

Any thoughts from the games elite players would be much appreciated......

      1. Always 4.5 rotate
      2. 6 week blocks but usually spend 13m on 3 rotating defenders
      3. Mostly same C. Caught Salah good run last season and managed to do Kane twice between when Salah blanked

I am by no means an elite manager but have been playing a while with a couple of decent finishes.

      1) For rotation to work, both teams need to be extremely strong at home as well as having keepers under 5m and fixtures that dovetail very well. This hardly ever happens - Stoke/Birmingham 10 years ago was a prime example that worked brilliantly. Newcastle/Swansea (Krul/Vorm) was also a big success.

In recent years, for the above reason I am of the set and forget persuasion.

      2) I normally set up at the beginning with the first 8 GW in mind. I used to set up with 3 in mind and play the WC over the first intl break, but partly because price rises in recent years are far less volatile than they used to be, and thereby less money to be made, and also because I now tend to look for significant fixture swings to play the WC which tend to be more profitable.

      3) I hate the thought of fixing the armband one one player. Where in earth is the fun in that?

I would not call myself an expert more battle hardened fpl veteran.

      1) I never rotate keepers any more - I just stick with the keeper with a decent run of fixtures 5- 8 gameweeks potential of save points less headaches

      2) I pick a team for a block of games 5-8 gameweeks - then I have a rough plan of the players I want to phase in - play it kind of like positional shots in snooker leave options set yourself up for the next best options

      3) I am liable to captain ANY player in my team who I think will get me the most points - captained fabinaski, Arnautovic and even Redmond on the last day of the season last year.
So I look at every position of the team v the opposition.
I feel many fpl players overlook options and are always drawn towards the higher priced player. This means you can get a jump on them if you think a player from a weaker side has a better fixture.
There are always a number of silly fpl myths Hazard is a troll never captain Hazard etc. I did on occasion and did OK.

i've noticed you're going without Salah. For those who are going Salah-less, do you reckon it's essential to have all three Liverpool defs (Robbo, VVD, TAA)?

          4 years, 8 months ago

No I wouldn't say essential (essential is another fpl myth)
You just have to work another combination people can go sterling-kane and double liverpool defence for example.

It is just whichever combination of players gets you the best value and most points overall.
My treble liverpool thing is because I am confident of clean sheets in the first two or at least one of those games.
          It could backfire of course.
But it could give me an edge on others in the game early on.
Other years I have played it 'safe' and never got off to a real flyer.
So this year I decided on a high risk high reward strategy so I could stand out from the fpl community at large.

Very interesting, thanks. Well I've had a look at your FPL history and you've done well to have a few under 10k season finishes

I am a bit inconsistent though, would like to see can I get one exceptional finish.
Last season focusing on the city defence saw me sky rocket in the last few gameweeks - also captained redmond on the last day.
To me I find the fpl community gets hung up about not having certain players - essential must have etc.
I look at it like shuffling playing cards in a deck - the game is fluid.
Every player can be transferred in or out, and all players should be considered for captaincy if they have good fixtures/form.

The frustration is the 1.5m gap between him and Wilson. Wilson is far and away the better choice imo but the temptation with King is what 1.5m can do for your squad....

If it’s max 7 and you already have a LEI mid then I admit it’s harder as the LEI boys are the best picks at that price point imo.

It’d otherwise be Zaha or a punt on a cheaper player (Grealish etc) and using cash elsewhere

      Morning all

I am very happy with this team (for the next 5 mins ) but I have 0.5m to shave off somewhere and can't decide the best place.
I'll also make a decision on Fraser vs Moura and Jota vs Deulo at the last minute as can't decide!

      Heaton
      TAA, VVD, Laporte, Digne
      Salah, Sterling, Moura/ Fraser, Perez
      Wilson, Jota/ Deulo
      (Button) (Dendo, Lundstrom, Greenwood)

      Obvious options are:
      Digne > Coleman
      Laporte > Zinch
      Wilson > King

I think the least risky one of those is Digne > Coleman but wanted to get the views of the experts (and the rest of you ;))

What are people thinking about Zinchenko ? Is he just subject to a bit of pep roulette the same as the rest of the backline (bar Laporte) or just a transfer waiting to happen?

His place to lose atm imo, Mendy out for at least the first month by the looks of things and Angelino hasn't taken his chances in pre-season.

For a ghost ship team, who do I pick for bench besides Dendoncker

        Stephens at Brighton
        or
        Hayden at Newcastle

Same big 3 as me with Sterling/KDB/Kane.

        Pope / Button
        Robbo / VVD / Digne / Coleman / Zinchenko
        Salah / Sterling / A Perez / 4.5 / 4.5
        Vardy / King / 4.5

10G 4A with only 1600 mins played last season, and he was said to have one of his worst seasons. Imagine if he played 3000 mins. Looked sharper than ever in pre-season.

I think United and Chelsea both look poor in terms of attacking personal but in my opinion if Chelsea are going to do anything Pulisic will step up, I’m not sure Martial has got it in him to be the main man - I think I’ve seen enough to know he is not

                          4 years, 8 months ago

It’s also not fair to extrapolate as players who have played few minutes tend to have done so late on in games where more goals are scored or against weaker sides (unless they are possibly prone to a substitution)

All of his goals and assists came from games in which he started.

I didn't ask for advice on this one. I'm laughing about the fact that Pulisic is an "obvious" better pick than Martial because he scored 2 goals in a pre-season friendly.

                  Rise of the 4.0's

With a few £4m defenders now become viable as preseason draws to a close, albeit some of these players starting possibilities are disputed by community members, who is your £4m defender of choice, and why....and is anyone brave enough to gamble on two £4m of them?

I can't remember any of the 4.0m's dropping to 3.9m for months after the season starts...problem is there is no one to unload them too, and mostly people accept they are bench fodder anyway.

I think last year when I used my free hit, around GW32/33, only two of the 4.0s had dropped, and only recently as well, and people had the option of getting Wan Bissaka last season too.

Yeah this is such a pervasive myth.

So many people talk about picking 4m defs and GKs that won't drop, but we never see 3.9s until well into the season.

The only way this would happen early on is if everyone had, say Lundstram, and then some hitherto unmentioned 4m appeared at RWB on a team with a decent chance of CSs and he managed a couple of big hauls while. Then people could justify a transfer on their bench fodder and the price would drop.

Last year I was actually genius enough to have AWB and Bennett in my GW1 squad. Not genius enough though - Benny only got me 1 pointers and AWB was on my bench for all those hauls 🙁
But there are no AWBs or Bennetts this year - mug's game.

                        Also had AWB benched GW1.
I bottled in on Bennett when they signed Dendonker late in the window and people thought he might take Bennetts spot.

Not going with any 4.0s this year then?

I think my point is even when I had 2x4.0m last time, I didn't get any benefit from it as I didn't trust them to start.
No, this time my cheapest defenders are 5.5m

I assumed the benefit would be how you invested the money saved in the rest of the team, the 4.0m just getting a 2 point return off the bench is the most I hope for really.

Yeah, whoever I afforded and played didn't get the 11 point hauls AWB did. Painful. Worse than a rotated keeper getting a haul. Mind you, I'm going into this GW1 with 2x5.5 defenders on the bench, so I'm a glutton for punishment.

                      Just Lundstram.

I get a 4m player to be a permanent fixture as 3rd on my bench, even AWB barely made an appearance for me and he was a special case. They'll be in my team at least until the first WC, probably until the second, and by then I won't be too bothered about a 0.1m drop.

Kelly/Rico are only in contention because there are injuries to first team players, so I'm not interested. They aren't going to be long term starters.

Lundstram MAY be a beneficiary of a change in system at SU to include an additional more defensive midfielder. IF that's the case, he has the potential to be a long term starter and maybe get into my team at some point if SU are solid and have good fixtures.

Lundstram is where I'm leaning right now too.

I just asked the question as lots of traction was building behind Rico, and as the transfer window ticks down, Kelly also becoming an option maybe.

The best drafts I have done have a 4.5 non playing forward like Greenwood (who I’m slightly concerned will drop due to United popularity & people buying him thinking he will play, but as you say about defs, hard to offload)

The upshot is I can’t have a 4.0 def as it would mean (in all likelihood) 2 non playing spots. Or to put it another way, 9.5m of value sitting idly outside of my team, contributing nothing, like a rich man’s offshore bank account.

There is probs a good analysis to be done (or one I haven’t seen?) about the value provided by second & third subs over the course of a season Vs non-playing cheapies.

Usually a bunch of solid 4.5 defs emerge that allow you to spread cash elsewhere. Can definitely see Zinc, Zouma, (maybe Everton defs if they don’t start well) and some others dropping fairly quickly as a good 4.5 emerges.
