Guardiola delivers City team news update ahead of Community Shield

Pep Guardiola delivered a pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon ahead of Sunday’s Community Shield.

As we have become accustomed to, the presser was low on concrete injury updates but the Manchester City boss was fairly upbeat-sounding ahead of the clash with Liverpool.

There is more than one way to interpret Guardiola’s comments, of course, and it may well be that he was referring exclusively to his group of players who have been representing their countries at the Copa America or Africa Cup of Nations.

Manchester City correspondent Sam Lee reported on Thursday that Aymeric Laporte (£6.5m) was a doubt for the Community Shield with a knock, so it remains to be seen if the centre-half has shrugged off that minor issue to line up at Wembley.

The likes of Sergio Aguero (£12.0m), Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m), Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) and Ederson (£6.0m) were namechecked in Guardiola’s comments and would seem set to be involved in the matchday squad.

However, Guardiola went on to suggest that the players who have already featured heavily in pre-season would again get the nod to start on Sunday.

Claudio Bravo (£5.0m) is set to start in goal after having played all 360 minutes of City’s four pre-season games so far.

Even more doubt. I knew 5.5 for a City def was too good to be true.

I think he’ll be in a few more if Zinchenko is now seen as less of an option... unless City buy someone in the next week. He’s certainly in mine for now anyway!

He didnt say Mendy is back in training. Everyone on the team is back in the facility, doesnt mean Mendy is ready to play.

Mendy has played limited minutes in preseason, seems to me this presser confirms that Zinchenko will have the LB spot for the beginning of the season at least

Have a real dilemma for the big forward or not. Aubameyang and Kane both are excellent choices but mess up the team a bit really. Which way you leaning on the issue?

I think thats a pretty common dilemma, and at this stage, I'm considering both. I'd love to include Aubameyang, but I also like the idea of a midfield trio of Salah, Sterling and De Bruyne.

He took the pen the other day, but you don't know if it would be him if Willian was on or Bats/Giroud.

But he has looked exceptional during pre-season

Well he did have a very good spell for a couple of weeks last season didn't he? And looks comfortable enough in the role he played in the pre-season. Pity he let me down when I brought him in last season.

We don't know, but people thought Jorginho or even Luiz would take them, but they didn't so looking good.
I personally think Lampard sees a bit of himself in him, English goalscoring nr 8 with pens

Agree with the 1st sentence, (particular Luiz as he is just a waste in my opinion but we keep that quite for the moment) not sure what Lampard thinks;-) Now I'm thinking to get him from GW2 for Moura, but was originally hoping to play a miniWC in GW2. Very good points cheers!

I like maguire as a pick- 5.5 , if he stays healthy I could see 12+ clean sheets, 4 goals and a few assists. Not saying he makes the back line much stronger but can see him getting attacking returns for sure to justify the 5.5

12 plus clean sheets, with their current squad, I'd be amazed. Personel is largely the same as last season aside from Wan-Bissaka and Maguire, when they kept 7. Cardiff and Bournemouth managed to keep 10.

        What do you think?

Gone big in defence, seems the norm. More value in midfield around 6.5-7K. Fancy Kane to tear it up this season.

        Ederson
Van Dijk - Walker - Coleman - Roberson
        Perez - Sterling - Redmond - Frazer - Sigurdson
        Kane

so many good picks from GW3 onwards, think there's a chance Maguire could be another to add to the list...also could Rashford have all the set-pieces?

Anyone now eyeing up a pope Ryan rotation? Week four an issue but that's it for a while. Usually hate keeper rotation because I get it wrong but this year there's so little value it feels like otherwise you get ederson (or possibly loris)

Ryan is medium long term price drop risk imo. High ownership and new attacking manager. (Dunk may also leave them.)

I can probably stomach a small price drop in the long term but yes, if dunk goes then I'll be having reservations. Good reminder.

I'd want my Liverpool slots for elsewhere so not Allison.
Maybe ederson if you don't want a city defender (I'd want sterling to start and the ability to add another mid when it becomes clear who).
Otherwise I'm probably looking at loris if you're going money no object.

I disagree Mctominay is good player with huge potential and gives 110% when on the pitch.

Matic probably yes he doesn't fit into the high press system a bit too slow for that. But we are in the market for a mid and Burno links have been strong.

... but in reality, three of those players were already at the club last season, and delivered just seven clean sheets, and serious issues remain in front of them, IMO.

City conceded just 27 goals with Delph playing left back - it's all about the system, not just personel.

It is over, yes. It’s only Everton fans burying their heads in the sand and pretending that they can persuade Chelsea to sell. Not gonna happen.

He’s going nowhere. Starting for Chelsea and may even keep his place ahead of Rudiger yet. Literally no reason to sell.
