Everton blank again as Villa finish pre-season campaign with three-goal win

Fantasy Premier League managers got their final look at Everton and Aston Villa ahead of the new campaign on Saturday.

The two clubs have now completed their pre-season schedules and have only training sessions left to prepare them for Gameweek 1.

There was plenty for Fantasy managers to digest from Everton and Villa’s matches.

The Toffees remain rather goal-shy as they head towards a meeting with Crystal Palace while Dean Smith’s newly-promoted side are looking dangerous.

Werder Bremen 0-0 Everton

Goals: None

Assists: None

Everton highlighted their need for offensive reinforcements once again as they drew 0-0 with Werder Bremen on Saturday afternoon.

In seven pre-season matches, the Toffees found the net just three times, their goals coming against Kariobangi Sharks, Monaco and Mainz.

In total, Everton drew four blanks during the summer in encounters with FC Sion, Wigan Athletic, Sevilla and now Bremen.

As has been reported before, Marco Silva’s men have not been short of their key players this summer, with all but Richarlison (£8.0m) available for most of their friendlies.

The Brazilian finally made his first start of the pre-season on Saturday afternoon but could not spark the Everton attack into immediate life.

Despite missing nearly all of pre-season training after returning from international leave in the wake of winning the Copa America, Richarlison still offered something against Werder Bremen.

He was stationed on the right flank of attacking midfield in a 4-2-3-1 formation and lasted 45 minutes before being replaced by Theo Walcott (£6.5m) at half-time.

Richarlison was involved in one of Everton’s early chances, using his strength to fire off an effort, saved by the goalkeeper, only for Bernard (£6.5m) to blast high over the crossbar.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.0m) also had a first-half chance that he could not convert and it appears very likely that he will lose his place to Moise Kean if his arrival is confirmed in time to play in Gameweek 1.

Walcott was denied twice in the second half while Lucas Digne (£6.0m) and André Gomes (£5.5m) also had chances to score.

Despite Everton’s struggles going forward, it must be said that they have still performed well at the back during pre-season.

This is made all the more impressive that neither Kurt Zouma (£5.0m) or Idrissa Gueye, two cornerstones of last season’s defensive success, were not involved at all.

Marco Silva went with the first-choice back-four against Bremen, Michael Keane (£5.5m) and Yerry Mina (£5.5m) flanked by Digne and Coleman.

On the whole, they looked solid in Germany, recording their fourth clean sheet in seven matches.

Those shutouts have come against FC Sion, Monaco, Wigan Athletic and now Bremen, most of which should not be scoffed at.

As for protection for the back four, Silva may now be sweating on the fitness of Fabian Delph (£5.5m) who was forced off with an injury in the fifth minute, replaced by Morgan Schneiderlin (£4.5m).

“Fabian’s injury looked to be nothing special but let’s see in the next few days. We will have to wait some more hours to see how he is. He felt something in the first moments of the match in his groin so let’s see in the next few days.” – Marco Silva

Meanwhile, there was no involvement for Jean-Philippe Gbamin after he signed from Mainz on Friday evening.

Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Digne, Keane, Mina, Coleman (c); Delph (Schneiderlin 5′), A Gomes; Bernard (Mirallas 82′), Sigurdsson (Davies 82′), Richarlison (Walcott 45′); Calvert-Lewin (Tosun 71′).

RB Leipzig 1-3 Aston Villa

After signing from Burnley this week, Heaton impressed on his Aston Villa debut

Goals: Conor Hourihane x2 (£5.5m), John McGinn (£5.5m)

Assists: Jack Grealish (£6.0m), Trezeguet (£5.5m)

Tom Heaton (£4.5m) was the star player for Aston Villa as he made his debut for the newly-promoted club on Saturday afternoon.

The former Burnley goalkeeper made a string of important saves to keep Dean Smith’s men in a strong position and eventually beat RB Leipzig 3-1 away from home.

In the first half, Heaton denied Konrad Laimer with his movement and stopped a Timo Werner effort that had taken a wicked deflection off defender Bjorn Engels (£4.5m).

After the break, he produced his best save of the afternoon, keeping a point-blank Marcel Sabitzer out of the net.

All of that bodes well for Fantasy managers scratching their heads for a £4.5m goalkeeper this season.

Given their defensive record in the Championship, and some suspect defending on Saturday afternoon, Villa are expected to concede a relatively high number of shots in 2019/20, so having a goalkeeper of Heaton’s quality should lead to a swathe of save-points.

Meanwhile, Villa do continue to look like an exciting prospect at the attacking end of the pitch.

In the five pre-season matches that they played, they did not blank in a single one and finished on a tally of 16 goals.

Conor Hourihane (£5.5m) responded to the signings of Douglas Luiz (£4.5m) and Marvelous Nakamba (£4.5m) with an inspired performance, scoring his first goals of pre-season.

Both of them were from free-kicks, the first coming after Jack Grealish (£6.0m) rolled the ball towards him after a foul on Wesley (£6.0m) and the second a direct effort fired into the corner.

The former Plymouth Argyle and Barnsley midfielder remains an important part of Villa’s midfield and will fancy his chances of starting in Gameweek 1.

Only Tyrone Mings (£4.5m) and Grealish registered more minutes than Hourihane in pre-season (317).

Also likely to start in the central midfield trio is John McGinn (£5.5m) who got his third goal of pre-season against Leipzig.

We had previously mentioned that this final friendly of the summer would be important for assessing Frederic Guilbert‘s (£4.5m) chances of starting the season.

The right-back has looked good in pre-season coming away with three assists from his advanced runs.

Despite last season’s first-choice Ahmed El Mohamady (£4.5m) being back in the fold now, Smith handed yet another friendly start to Guilbert, his 295 minutes this summer making him the second-most used defender behind Mings.

On the other flank, Matt Targett (£4.5m) was given the nod ahead of Neil Taylor (£4.5m). He has now outplayed the former Swansea City left-back by 96 minutes this summer.

Engels is probably now favourite to accompany Mings at centre-back after his 90 minutes against Leipzig. He looked like he might need to come off with a bad injury at the end of the first half but came out for the second half in good shape.

The same could not be said for winger Anwar El Ghazi (£5.5m) who had to come off with a twisted ankle in the 77th minute.

He was replaced by new signing Trezeguet (£5.5m) who provided the assist for McGinn’s goal.

Jota (£6.0m) now looks very secure of a start in Gameweek 1 after he registered a 90-minute outing at Leipzig. No Villa winger has played as many minutes as him during pre-season (295).

Meanwhile, Wesley sould hold off any competition for the centre-forward role after he played 78 minutes.

Jonathan Kodjia (£5.5m) returned from his international leave to come on for the former Club Brugge man for the last 12 minutes but, at least for now, he will not be as prepared for the new Premier League season as the new signing.

Aston Villa XI (4-3-3): Heaton; Targett, Mings, Engels, Guilbert; Hourihane, McGinn, Grealish; El Ghazi (Trezeguet 77′), Wesley (Kodjia 78′), Jota.

Completely agree. Ironically, I think Palace's woeful firepower makes Wickham a decent punt for your bench as he's more likely to get gametime when Woy gets too exasperated with Tekkers, Ayew and co.

Is that they don’t really need a huge volume of CS to score a huge amount of points:

      Pope 17/18 - 11 CS 152 points
      Ryan 17/18 - 10 CS 146 points
      Heaton 16/17 - 10 CS 149 points
      Heaton 14/15 - 10 CS 150 points

Also who could forget Etheridge last season - 9 CS & 150+ points

Give Burnley 10 CS again & tentatively put Pope on the magic 150?

Yep and let’s assume Pope hits 150, Ederson/Allison would have to hit 200 to provide the same value. Don’t see that happening

It’s an admirable analysis - but some things to be wary of that are distorting the picture & missing the value of 4.5GK’s as a result:

            1. It uses this season’s prices - so 4.5 Fabianski is being penalised & looks much worse
            2. It excludes 4.5 Etheridge who would sail to the top of the charts
            3. Neither Pope nor Heaton were nailed which would have been another two 4.5’s scoring highly on value
            4. It’s only looking at last season so misses the bigger picture - which is that year after year we repeatedly have (relatively predictable) 4.5’s getting 150+ points

Here are some generic Gk points calculations thst may help:
              https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vR8nhV-hioGjz_N9fxKfIKrRWQNt_lD0SubR_keBdz69pHvjoi1ou-OAMyXOpkqbj8kEo1VyjOjeSJS/pubhtml
This excludes bonus points as didnt want any accusations of subjectivety but therefore undervalues cheaper gks slightly.

Nice 🙂 it’s a bit limited obviously in that it assumes averages etc and excludes bonus as you say - but the value of a good 4.5 is there to see

And crucially this season we have at 2 “good”4.5’s in Heaton & Pope, with another two high potentials in Ryan & Henderson

I've done specific analysis based on team/Gk save percentages over last couple seasons projected clean sheets and including bonus points separately - but obviously much of that could just be considered my opinion in the assumptions applied. I see any of heaton/pope/Henderson as decent options although lloris/ederson could prove similar value over good runs of fixtures. With going 7/6.5m defenders rather than 6/5.5 and few decent options in general under 6m there's got to be some compromises somewhere, and at the moment prefer the flexibility another 1.5m provides

Ederson is the fly in the 4.5 ointment at the minute for me

If Lundstram was nailed for example, I’d give serious consideration to Ederson & Lundy instead of current Laporte & 4.5 GK

But as it is I think a 4.5 getting 150 has the edge over Ederson getting 170-ish

The other thing that worries me with no Ederson is pen saves though - he surely due 1 or 2 this year as he was rwjnowned as a “specialist” in that department when he arrived originally

        Fabianski an even better illustration

Villa's fixtures for the first few months look too favourable to ignore. Then it's a case of reassessing with WC and transfers. With their run in, I could see Villa struggling for points for the last 2 months of the season.

Edging toward that mid 4 too but Barkley the obvious risk both from the fact he is still not a sure starter plus he could just flop but potential at 6.0
Then I put Son or Erik with those mids about 8.0 on a striker and an upgraded defence.

so many of you beleive that Kane will finally score big in August. I can afford him, but there is Auba for the same price. And Vardy for 9mil which will allow turn McGinn into 7.5 mid and we have plenty of tasty mids in 7.5 bracket this year(Fraser, Moura, etc).
    A) Kane+ McGinn
    B)Auba+ McGinn
C)Vardy + 7.5 mid(tell me your favourite in that price)

if you choosing between Villa McGinn for the money. If you want Barkley or Watford 6 mid then you decide who;s better:) But I dont see a 6 mid who will defo score more then McGinn at the moment

I'd argue that Barkley if nailed and on pens (Giroud and Jorginho have both been on the pitch when he has taken them) will definitely outscore him

I would think the manager would have more confidence In the regular england international playing his 5th season in the league over a player who is playing his frist season for the club after being on loan his entire short career

Mcginn will start every game & is quality. However FPL wise jota and wesley are better attacking options for villa. Although mcginn is cheaper he will keep picking up yellows. Grealish the assist of the assister.

Ive gone for Wesley as believe there are better options in midfield in that bracket atm, i.e perez and Barkley.

      Coming from a villa fan

I think Trossard is an option in the 6m bracket. Great stats and end product in a weaker league, part of the front 3 in a 343 setup and has been given louds of minutes to show form in friendlies. He had three assists in the 4-0 trashing of Birmingham. He looks like a really good player.

One injury and he's over it. Anyway, why would you avoid an injury-prone player? If he's fit and performing, you're all good. If he gets injured, you sell him and get another.

Same. It's really swings and roundabouts. However, one factor to consider is TAA has easy cover while Robbo doesn't - unless Klopp puts Milner at LB again.

TAA was awful in Liverrpool's last preseason match.
But if he lays every match and don't get rotated some times (like last season), he'll provide more assist than Robertson.
I'm on Robertson atm, he's more reliable

They don't look too bad. They have very good fixtures for the first few months. Some confidence after their run in last season. Plus outside of the top 6-8 clubs in the league teams are much of a muchness. They'll be bottom half and have a decent chance of survival if they they get enough points before their tough run in.

                Don't think they're the same.

Think Heaton will get way more save points than Pope and a cs would mean a huge monster haul. Has good fixtures to begin as well.

With City, Pool, Everton and United def in the mix, can't see a spot for a 4.5m Villa def.

Heaton has better fixtures to begin with and a switch to Pope is always possible with the WC once fixtures clear up for Burnley.

Being reading comments on here for years, finally decided to post a comment!

            RMT please:
            Ederson
            TAA, Robbo, Laporte, Digne, Azpl
            Salah, Siggy, Moura, Fraser,
            Wilson,

            ITB 0.5

            Subs: Button, Greenwood, Dedoncker, Wickham

Team reasonably template, Moura will exit as as Son returns. Can’t decide between Azpl/Dedoncker v Zaha and 4.0. Azpl on bench for first game away at UTD. Would love Sterling in there but can’t afford. Also long considered VVD in a 3 man LFC defence. Thoughts welcome.

Zaha is not a good option until we know where he'll play and how's Palace going if he stays
Your bench is too light, you'll have some problems
I like the back line and I think that the lack of option in front can be managed like that, although it is a punt

I think that because you have adblockers on.

Hayden. He also seems to be getting further forward if preseason is anything to go by.

Nice thanks. I see he only played about half the games last year- is there competition for his spot?

He wasn't first choice at the start of the season, but became first choice for the run in. He played as one of two CMs, but Bruce seems to favour 3 CMs. With Diame gone he should be nailed.

The only thing to look at is that he's said he would like to move south for family reasons. He said that over a year ago, it hasn't effected his performances and he hasn't moved.

please share your opinion, folks, I ended up with this:

            Pope
            Laporte TAA Coleman
            Salah Sterling Perez Barkley
            Kane(C) Gray Origi

            (Heaton,Lundstram, Simpson, Dendoncker)

Gray won't stay a first team regular once Deulofeu is fit
Lundstram will also be non-regular, sheffield fans not fond of him, and accord to FFS scoutcast he'll play when sheffield will need a 5th defender.
              Simpson isn't nailed either
and dendoncker is a 2 pointer

Rashford looks hungry and eager to go. Anyone looking at him from the off?

I've been looking, but decided from the off, no. Too much uncertainty - Dybala, Pogba and so on. Can't be sure how the players around him will perform.
