The impact Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has had on United’s Fantasy assets

The jury is still out on Manchester United’s Fantasy assets going into the new campaign.

The new manager bounce that the club experienced after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s appointment in December gave way to some middling form in the final nine Gameweeks of the season.

Their pre-season results (five wins from six) have been quietly encouraging, at least, with Inter Milan and Spurs among the teams already beaten in July.

This latest Numbers Game piece differs from the usual format as we focus on the impact Solskjaer had on United’s assets in the second half of last season.

The Norwegian first took charge of the Red Devils in Gameweek 18, so we will examine United’s stats before and after the departure of Jose Mourinho.

Top options to partner King for 7.0m or less?
I have KDB / Sterling / Salah in midfield.

Cancelo to Man CIty just makes them more of a minefield. Only Laporte is nailed and I am extremely unwilling to spend £6.5m on a defender that isn't an attacking wingback.

3 of the top 5 scoring defenders last season were CBs (VVD, Laporte, Luiz). But yes, only Laporte and Ederson are safe routes into that defense imo.

Luiz being top 5 just blew my mind, actually unbelievable.
Reverse spin... 9 of the top 12 defenders were full backs.

Me too... Maybe the ol' midfield double up, but West Ham look likely to score even if they get trashed and I imagine Spurs getting one in an epic.

        That seems sound to me

Part of my test is to look at WC 34 last time. Plenty didn’t go with City defence then even with huge budgets. Even if you factor out Brighton madness it says something.

How about this risky premium team. Chambers is a total punt. Wilshire has had a great pre-season though. Looks like the best value 5m mid.

You would be covering a large percentage of Bournemouth attacking returns, but there will only be so many Bournemouth attacking returns. The result is that you will quite likely do well, but you will never do great. The trick is getting the Bournemouth attacker that gets 2 goals and an assist out of 4 goals, and then picking up somebody like Perez who gets a goal and an assist out of 3 Leicester goals, etc.

King and Wilson don’t mix. Almost half of Kings non pens came in the comparatively short period Wilson was out. The cf is the one who gets goals. They also got more than their fair share of pens.

They aren’t City. Palace (!) Leicester Watford West Ham and Everton weren’t far off their goal total - pretty much within variance.

Assuming they have a rest day on the Friday, they still have a full Saturday of training and match preparation before Sunday's game. They should be okay.

GW3 is the main concern if they progress to the playoff stage. They have a game on the Saturday, with just a day in between the Europa League game.

Yep. Playing further up, on FKs, could be gold. Happy to start and shift if needed after a few GWs

Bold enough to triple captain Salah after that CS performance...?

Fairly after yesterday. Wouldn’t say 100% though.

What do you reckon to the below:

      Pope
      TAA | VVD | *5.5 | Digne
      Salah | KDB | Sterling | Pérez
      King | Deulofeu

      Thoughts on the 5.5 slot?

I’m thinking No city defence with AWB or Zinc/Stones?

Alternatively, delete KDB, swap for Moura/Martial and put Laporte in?

No. Gomez will more likely start.

Do you Jorginho going to play under Lampard?

Hard to say. In the double pivot Kante will be nailed. Jorginho has to compete with Kovacic. might depend on the opposition, so I wouldn't be confident he's nailed.

      Yes but not nailed.

    Pulisic or Martial?

Feel like Pulisic is more nailed but Chelsea will be such an unknown quantity.

Who are going to be the 5 mids that play behind Haller, who's in the hole behind him. Lanzini at 6.5 is tempting.

I think we'll see a fair bit of rotation but looks Lanzini - Fornals - Andersen are in the driving seat as the 3 behind Haller. Expect Yarmo and Snoddy to get a lot of minutes too.

      Rice + Noble/Wilshere behind them

Something a bit different. Got fed up of having Greenwood in my team, he was basically restricting it to only 12 outfield players.

    Ederson Button
    VVD Digne Dunk/Montoya Gibson Hanley
    Salah KdB Siggy Perez Hayden
    Kane King Deeney

Would play 3-4-3 most weeks and rotate the three cheap defenders.

    Thoughts? Thanks in advance 🙂

Am I on the right track?

    4-4-2
    Ryan / Leno
    Ake / Digne / Walker / Cathcart / (Dunk)
    Sigurdsson / Salah / Moura / Fraser / (Hayden)
    Kane / Wilson / (McGoldrick)

    Thanks 🙂

I think the 4.5s will prove the best value. Take your pick from Ryan, Heaton, Pope or Henderson. Personally I would just pick on keeper and have a 4.0 on the bench. Keeper hauls are hard to predict.

Sacrifice Kane for Sterling if you fancy Moura.
