Scoutcast Episode 296 – Last of the Summer Wine

The Scoutcast is back with Joe, Az and Luke joined by original host Granville to mark a landmark moment in the show’s history.

At the 296 episode mark the Scoutcast has finally delivered more shows than long running British TV sitcom Last of the Summer Wine.

This achievement had long been a goal of Granville and fellow original host and Fantasy Football Scout creator Mark Sutherns over the years.

Here Granville looks back at the show’s history, including its memorable early hat-tricks and features.

He also finds time to chat about the forthcoming campaign by revealing his ‘old school’ team. Meanwhile, Az is daring to be different once again with his ‘poetic’ ode to Sheffield United’s players. Luke is looking to be more ‘dullard’ this season by shackling his daredevil instincts. As for Joe, he thinks he’s created his usual boring and safe collection of players, only to be told by his co-hosts that he’s actually turned maverick.

Goalkeeper tactics also get an airing as does the huge array of potential mid priced stars in midfield and attack, who could be a gold mine of points this season. Well, in theory anyway.

Elsewhere, Luke looks at the best mid-term differential by joining Az in his love affair with promoted sides and Joe takes in the best teams in terms of clean sheets over August and early September.

Last of the Summer Wine has now been beaten but will our crew be dogged by some late summer whining at the end of Gameweek 1?

The fallout from GW1 I feel is going to be the biggest yet because there are (at least on here) such clear camps:

    A) SSK or 2 premium
    B) Kane vs Auba if SSK
    C) Promoted team punts vs tried and tested

Whatever happens we will have guaranteed scenes from those that "chose the wrong option".

Let's be honest, pretty much all the RMTs on here are chosen from 2-3 core structures and are all viable starting teams that could do very well in GW1 and beyond.

We have to remember that we are at a natural advantage in the FPL 'nerd' community over the filthy casuals and the likelihood is that whichever of the template options we choose, it will do relatively well - either in GW1 or eventually. We have access to awesome data, insight and a great forum for feedback as we tweak our teams during the season.

I guess the message I am giving myself and anyone who cares to listen is: unless you are deliberately going way off template, do a bit of research, pick players you like/ trust and the rest just go with your gut for GW1 - it will most likely do pretty well regardless. We probably won't be able to avoid the urge to moan afterwards (that's part of the fun) but you've picked a strategy so try and stick to your guns!

Happy Thursday - can't wait for this thing to finally start again 🙂

Haha. Tbh my 3 premium option is an “ASS” team also as I back Auba to do great things especially early on given current form.

Just trying to settle on safety (2 premium) vs excitement (3 premium) to start. Will probably wait until after pressers in case we get anything enlightening

Could Mina or Keane be a viable 5.5 way into the Everton back four with Sidibe signing and making Coleman look less attractive.
