Scoutcast Episode 296 – Last of the Summer Wine

The Scoutcast is back with Joe, Az and Luke joined by original host Granville to mark a landmark moment in the show’s history.

At the 296 episode mark the Scoutcast has finally delivered more shows than long running British TV sitcom Last of the Summer Wine

This achievement had long been a goal of Granville and fellow original host and Fantasy Football Scout creator Mark Sutherns over the years.

Here Granville looks back at the show’s history, including its memorable early hat-tricks and features.

He also finds time to chat about the forthcoming campaign by revealing his ‘old school’ team. Meanwhile, Az is daring to be different once again with his ‘poetic’ ode to Sheffield United’s players. Luke is looking to be more ‘dullard’ this season by shackling his daredevil instincts. As for Joe, he thinks he’s created his usual boring and safe collection of players, only to be told by his co-hosts that he’s actually turned maverick.

Goalkeeper tactics also get an airing as does the huge array of potential mid priced stars in midfield and attack, who could be a gold mine of points this season. Well, in theory anyway.

Elsewhere, Luke looks at the best mid-term differential by joining Az in his love affair with promoted sides and Joe takes in the best teams in terms of clean sheets over August and early September.

Last of the Summer Wine has now been beaten but will our crew be dogged by some late summer whining at the end of Gameweek 1?

Have Wolves signed anyone to compete with The Donck yet?

      Kessie was deemed to expensive.
Lemina talks fell through early on.
Looks like they are getting no one unless they make a desperate signing but I doubt it will be anyone if significant quality, enough to unsettle Dendoncker anyhow.

I'm a little worried that they wanted to sign anyone at all, makes his place seem less than assured even if they don't make a signing

Yeah, of course - I had forgotten the whole EL angle a bit.

The uncertainty was pushing me from Zinchenko/Donker to Dunk/Barkley and tbh I might just go for it anyway

Moura should be nailed for first few gws. I want a spurs player for the opening game for sure.

Having king and Wilson gives me enough Bournemouth coverage.

Luke’s Auba Robinson call is really interesting if you listen.

It doesn’t make a whole of sense over 4 weeks given a fixture turn in gw3 but makes lots of sense over 2 weeks imo. SU and Arsenal both have 2 excellent fixtures.

It’s almost certainly where I’m going. Punty but rational.

That’s the worry of course. May bail out and get McGinn or a 4th defender who could work as midterm holds.

But I have low expectations of any 5.5/eleventh player. At that price bracket any return over the course of 2 matches is par or better I’d say. Factoring in Auba is a big deal to me.

I certainly wouldn’t get pushed into an early transfer by Robinson missing or someone else in that hitting. Made that mistake in getting Pereyra in very early last time.

    Help appreciated guys!

    Ryan (Button)
    VVD Robertson Digne Zinchenko (Rico)
    Salah Sterling Siggy Perez (Dendonker)
    Wilson Jota (Greenwood)

    not 100% on Zinchenko tbh

    A. GTG (4-4-2)
    B. Zinchenko & Rico out - 2 rotating 4.5's in & upgrade VVD to TAA (4-4-2)
    C. Zinchenko out - get another 4.0 defender in, upgrade Dendonker to Trossard (3-5-2)

Think I am set on 4-5-1 at the moment having put a lot of thought in to it.

The only thing I am worried about is not having a 6.5m striker as its a good price point to have. May end up changing Perez to 6.5m before the deadline

I think Tielemans is an unreal player and can only get better. Perez was a lot more relied upon at Newcastle also (example Lukaku from Everton > Man U - gone from focal point of attack to a player in a much better team)

Fair enough and you should go for him then. Although I like Tielemans a lot, I think Perez might be involved in a more advanced position. But hey, they probably won't differ that much in the end.

Probably won't be too dissimilar. I did a post on Tielemans, Maddison and Perez a few weeks back. Considering Tielemans potential I think he can really turn up this season (with a nice full season under his belt and Rodgers will want him using his passing talent going forward)

I like it to be honest except for the wilshire pick - I would go 4.5 or Norwood - or maybe Jorginho
Not sure on the walker pick as Man City have spurs gw2 and you will have double city defence
Moura can be switched if he does not look like starting gw3

My team has no sterling or salah by the way - probably captain TAA.
Your wilson captain could be good.

Walker was a place holder as Laporte was flagged (hence the 0.5 itb), but I take your point re Spurs.
Moura was initially planned to switch to FAnderson/Lanzini but Wilshere as the placeholder means I don't wanna stack WHU. I had Jorginho as the 5.0 to start with but Wilshere pre-season means he's nailed for me (WHU fan). If he gets injured he's only bench fodder anyways.

                Tielemans > Hayden
                Richar > Salah

I think you could keep that plan in your back pocket if you manage to save a transfer gw2.
But do it that way you would need .05m leeway in case of price rises.

I have a two transfer plan before gw 3 for example

                  Wilson out - Greenwood in
                  Fraser out sterling in

I have 1.5m in the bank and with a 0.5m leeway to do these transfers. Takes the pressure off.
I used to make the mistake of having the exact money but missing out by prices rises

I have 0.5 ITB currently (hence Walker not Laporte) or I can just do Sterling > Salah to start the season which I'm considering more and more!

Go for it if it is really worrying you I am sticking with my treble liverpool defence and TAA captain.(still think it is the best value option leaves decent overall squad)

Personally I would be annoyed with myself if I switched to getting Salah and captaining him at this stage.
As for you obviously put thought into your team. But it can be difficult to stick with your choices - as the more 'mainstream' combinations make more and more noise closer to deadline.

Not sure rich will be up and running from the off

Walker should be Laporte- been in training, he’ll start

Richar usually starts the season well was hoping for OOP. Might actually switch him to Siggy.
Walker was Laporte but with the flag on moved him for now (means I could do Sterling > Salah if I wanted)

Agreed, I am going this strategy myself because I feel it is ignored by the community at large (these days) and it might give a jump in the ranks - while allowing to keep the wildcard

You know I really enjoyed that Podcast - Granville really added something to the mix he is not afraid to hold the contrary view 'expensive keepers' etc

    Jaws dropped on screen -
    Luke smirked.
Az went a shade paler .
And Joe had a long pause in shock.

    Brilliant stuff!

Give the auld cankerous git a place back on the scoutcast every few weeks at least!

    Robertson | Laporte | Zinchenko | TAA
    Salah | Sterling | Perez | Zaha
    Wilson | Jota

    McGovern | Greenwood | Dendoncker | Kelly
    __________
    Laporte | Zinchenko | Digne

Cant decide which 2 to have of the above, with zero in the bank if i go Laporte and Digne im going to have to make some alterations.

Adams has good preseason, are you sure he is nailed? Ings too injury prone but on penalties and good when fit. Im on Adams currently but havent even seen him play so having doubts.

If you have no bench, Adams is probably the safer pick out of the two.
