Team News

The headline FPL team news from Thursday’s press conferences

There were nine Premier League manager press conferences held on Thursday ahead of the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

The headline team news came from Liverpool, where Jurgen Klopp provided fairly positive news on Sadio Mane (£11.5m) ahead of Friday’s encounter with Norwich City.

Klopp said:

Looks fit. Yesterday was his first session with the team. Yesterday now with the team first time, looks absolutely OK, in good spirits. Yes he’s an option, but we will see.

The Reds’ boss said of James Milner (£5.5m):

Millie trained yesterday with the team, 100%. He will be fine.

The Reds opponents have problems at centre-half, with stoppers Christoph Zimmermann and Timm Klose (£4.5m) sidelined for Gameweek 1.

Defensive midfielders Alex Tettey and Ibrahim Amadou (both £4.5m) are also unavailable for tomorrow’s encounter.

On the subject of newly promoted clubs, Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder revealed a clean bill of health at today’s presser.

Dean Smith only ruled out James Chester (£4.5m), meanwhile, as Villa prepare to take on Spurs.

Robbie Brady (£5.5m) looks set to miss out for Burnley against Southampton, whose manager Ralph Hasenhuttl didn’t disclose any injury concerns.

Gerard Deulofeu (£6.5m) was passed fit by Javi Gracia but Danny Welbeck (£6.0m) won’t be ready to feature against Brighton.

The Seagulls will be without Jose Izquierdo (£5.5m) and Yves Bissouma (£5.0m).

Mark Noble (£5.0m) hasn’t recovered from a dead leg in time to face Manchester City but Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) is fit to face the reigning champions.

We’ll have updates on Friday’s 11 press conferences in advance of the 19:00 BST deadline.

Anyone else think it's a bad idea to own Greenwood, the highest TSB% 4.5m? When midprice striker bandwagons come by, everyone will be dropping him and his price will go down, no?

On the other hand, he comes off the bench and scores the winner against Chelsea, and everyone’s all over him. Just depends how much of an impact you see him making really.

So the difference between the 4-4-2, 3-5-2 and 3-4-3 is basically whether choose 5.5 defender midfielder or forward for me. So by my own judgement 3 best options from those positions seem to be Zinchenko, Robinson, and this guy from Villa whose name I don't quite remember but it was Wesley probably. So what can we expect from them?

Zinchenko realistically looking should most probably get from 2 to 4 clean sheets and maybe add 1 assist to this if we are optimistic. So the worst case scenario would be 2 clean sheets that's 20 points from 6 games without bonus (I would need to check how was he doing bps wise in those games he played last season.) Optimistic scenario is 4 clean sheets + 1 assists what gives 34 points if we assume he gets let's say 3 bonus in those games. So we can we have a range from 20 to 34 points. The advantage here imho is that clean sheets when it comes to City and Lfc have a similiary high possibility in all games (let's say 50% generally) so I would judge the possibility of a streak of let's say 6 games without a clean sheets at very small rate of 1,5%. However odds for only 1 clean sheet would be 10% calculating from binomial distribution (assuming experiments are independent). In case of Robinson and Wesley the problem is in my opinion the number of goals we expect from the teams they play for. My best bet would be that both Aston Villa and Sheffield get 6 goals from first 6 games (what do you think about it?). In such teams forwards usually have high goal involvement so let's assume something like 40%. Optimistically they both get 3 goals. Bad scenario would be let's say 1 goal and 1 assist. So that's a range of 20 to 30 (assuming 3 bonus) for Robinson and 19 to 27 for Wesley.
So conclusion based on this this would be that Robinson and Zinchenko are quite good options and Wesley a little bit less due to the fact that forwards only get 4 points for goals. However it is all based on the assumption that Zinch is 100% nailed - of which I'm not completely sure. Also Sheffield seem to me to be a little less attacking side than Villa and they may as well score fewer goals. Villa however has a lot of new signings which is also a worry.

Who do you think is the best 5.5 option regardless of position?

Like your analysis, though city also start with easier fixtures so would imagine higher chance of more CS above the mean than simply season avg x games.

There is also the psychological possibility of newly promoted teams getting beaten in a run of say 3 games and the whole team slumping a la Fulham and so the forwards underperforming.

Personally I would stick to forwards fron better teams initially at a slightly higher price bracket, or defenders around that price. Zinchenko, Stones, Gomez, Coleman...

Cheers Jacky, that's what I'm thinking. Then I can start him ahead of Guilbert (Spurs away)

I've gone Rico. Seems more nailed for start of season while Lundstram is a doubt from what I've heard.

Kean bench for GW1 in anticipation of him being benched for this one in real life.

        Ready to go for GW2!

      Have 1.5 ITB, should I...

      A) Upgrade Trossard to a 7.5 mid and who?
      B) Upgrade Greenwood to a 6.0 fwd and who?

Rest of the front line are Salah, Sterling, Perez, Dend, Haller, Wilson

      Thanks!
