Team News

The headline FPL team news from Thursday’s press conferences

There were nine Premier League manager press conferences held on Thursday ahead of the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

The headline team news came from Liverpool, where Jurgen Klopp provided fairly positive news on Sadio Mane (£11.5m) ahead of Friday’s encounter with Norwich City.

Klopp said:

Looks fit. Yesterday was his first session with the team. Yesterday now with the team first time, looks absolutely OK, in good spirits. Yes he’s an option, but we will see.

The Reds’ boss said of James Milner (£5.5m):

Millie trained yesterday with the team, 100%. He will be fine.

The Reds opponents have problems at centre-half, with stoppers Christoph Zimmermann and Timm Klose (£4.5m) sidelined for Gameweek 1.

Defensive midfielders Alex Tettey and Ibrahim Amadou (both £4.5m) are also unavailable for tomorrow’s encounter.

On the subject of newly promoted clubs, Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder revealed a clean bill of health at today’s presser.

Dean Smith only ruled out James Chester (£4.5m), meanwhile, as Villa prepare to take on Spurs.

Robbie Brady (£5.5m) looks set to miss out for Burnley against Southampton, whose manager Ralph Hasenhuttl didn’t disclose any injury concerns.

Gerard Deulofeu (£6.5m) was passed fit by Javi Gracia but Danny Welbeck (£6.0m) won’t be ready to feature against Brighton.

The Seagulls will be without Jose Izquierdo (£5.5m) and Yves Bissouma (£5.0m).

Mark Noble (£5.0m) hasn’t recovered from a dead leg in time to face Manchester City but Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) is fit to face the reigning champions.

We’ll have updates on Friday’s 11 press conferences in advance of the 19:00 BST deadline.

      that's a full on bench.

Seriously I like it your punts or ones with poor GW2 fixtures are covered by the current bench. A different approach but can work. GL

I agree with that. I've dabbled with something similar, targeting GW1 fixtures but having the ideal replacements in GW2 and a strong overall squad. In the end decided against it, but I rate the strategy. Anything a bit different is worth a go early on.

Who said you couldn't have 3 premium attackers! I'm going for it. I will inevitably Wildcard early regardless, so it's all about attacking the early fixtures and having the best captaincy option for the first 4 gameweeks. To me, Auba is the clear candidate in GW2, but I can't go without Salah and Sterling. Sacrifices have to be made, but not too many. Plus your GW1 team is not your team for the season, there's plenty of time to get who you want down the track.

    Henderson
    KWP - VVD - Digne
    Salah (C) - Sterling - Lamela - Trossard - Robinson
    Aubameyang - Wilson

    McGovern - Montoya - Lundstram - Greenwood

In GW3 the cash from Auba downgrade can be used to upgrade as required. Likely Lamela to the best mid-priced mid, and a cheap defender to a second Liverpool defender.

Lundstram? Not worried at all. I don't build teams thinking about what my bench fodder can do, by the time I would even need them I'll made transfers anyway. Realistically it's 1-2 points here and there off the bench, it's nothing. I take hits to fix issues on the run so never really need much of a genuine bench.

I think he's safe for quite a while. And if he does get some game time that's probably all anyone owning him is expecting. I need a 4m defender, it could be anyone really.

Price only. I want Moura, but these are the types of sacrifices you have to make to get the 3 heavy hitters in attack. I've looked for any opportunity to save money that I don't expect to punish me too much, and given it's a one-off punt that won't stay in my team, I fancy Lamela about as much as Moura. If I was thinking long term, I wouldn't have either.

Nothing more annoying than going with the template and it not going well. I'd so much rather go with my gut instincts and fix it if wrong, than follow the herd to success or failure. If this team doesn't fire, it's easily fixed with hits or Wildcard. Not many chances in a season to go for it and have that WC safety net.

          • 6 Years

Watch out for early price falls on lund and greenwood if they dont start. Are you prepared to wildcard with an undervalue team? How early is too early? Do we have enougg info to wildcard in gw 2 or 3? Sheffield will likely ship goals. Kwp needs to be seen to early. Probably lamela too. This smells like low value early wildcard with limited info to me. I also want to wildcard early but gw 4 is a long way away for a team with a bunch of fires.

Having said all that. I agree with going with your gut and look forward to being told 'i told you so'

"Watch out for early price falls on lund and greenwood if they dont start."

If your structure, going big in defence and midfield requires a benched 4.5 striker, you get Greenwood. Not to play, but to be able to afford other assets. There's no other 4.5 striker worth selling him for. Therefore, only idiots who bought him to start every game will sell.
Lundstram is different - if a different 4m defenders emerges as a regular starter, he will be dumped en masse and his price will fall.

Last season I Wildcarded in GW5 and it was incredible. Anytime from GW4 onwards is a viable option I'd say.

I don't agree with the fires you're talking about really. I just say good early fixtures for players with an opportunity to start for various reasons (specifically the Spurs duo). I know the weak points in the team, and they're the ones who will be getting transferred out. I'm a highly active manager, lots of transfers, so I'm only ever looking a few GWs ahead.

Why is Guilbert part of the first choice 4.5*2 rotation. Elmohamedy is back soon and is also a very good player. Am I missing something? Preseason really means very little
