Captain Sensible

Who is the best FPL captain for Gameweek 1?

Fantasy Premier League managers are considering captains from three different clubs ahead of the Gameweek 1 deadline.

Liverpool host Norwich on Friday night, Manchester City travel to West Ham on Saturday lunch-time and Spurs conclude that day’s action by hosting Aston Villa.

For the first Gameweek of the new season, the majority of the captain attention is on these three games.

We’ve analysed as much data as we can to assess the individual potential of the key players, as well as the quality of defences they are going up against.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access the full article.

However, non-members can still enjoy our analysis of the results of our captain poll.

It is also worth clarifying for those used to Captain Sensible articles from recent seasons that we can only start to look at the last four (or so) Gameweeks once we have more data in the bank for 2019/20.

Captain Poll

The results of the captain poll as of Thursday night

The poll for Gameweek 1 is perhaps one of the most one-sided we’ve seen in quite some time.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) has absolutely run away with it, securing 62.8% of the vote at the time of writing.

That is not surprising at all considering the Egyptian has been the top-scoring FPL asset in both of his seasons at Liverpool.

He was especially deadly at Anfield last season too, scoring 13 of his 22 goals at home (59.1%).

Meanwhile, Norwich arrive in the Premier League with concerns over their defence.

They conceded 57 goals in 46 matches last season and recorded clean sheets in just 28% of those.

Furthermore, the Canaries’ defence has suffered injury problems during pre-season, Christoph Zimmerman (£4.5m), Timm Klose (£4.5m) and Grant Hanley (£4.0m) all missing various summer friendlies with knocks.

In his Thursday press conference, Daniel Farke revealed that only the latter of those three would be fit for Gameweek 1.

Kane is the most popular differential option this week

Way off in second place in the poll is Harry Kane (£11.0m) who starts the new season at home to newly-promoted Aston Villa.

They shipped a total of 61 goals during their promotion-winning campaign and recorded just 12 clean sheets, the tenth-best in the Championship.

That record has obviously handed optimism to those looking at Kane as a differential this weekend.

The Spurs forward has never scored in Gameweek 1 of a Premier League season though.

Sterling faces a trip to West Ham on Saturday lunch time

Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) sits even further down the ranking with the backing of just 6.4% in our poll at the time of writing.

He faces a West Ham defence that did not inspire confidence in 2018/19 and upon his last visit to the London Stadium, he came away with a goal and an assist.

Manchester City generally have a good record at West Ham too, scoring at least four times in each of their last four visits to the Hammers.

For that reason, if he starts, Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) could reward the 1.9% of managers who are handing him the captain’s armband for Gameweek 1.

However, it must be said that his late return to pre-season from the Copa America, and his lack of minutes in the Community Shield final could suggest he could take up only a substitute’s role.

It says a lot about Aguero’s Fantasy stock right now that both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m) won more support in the Captain Poll than him.

The Arsenal forward sits in fourth place in the poll with an admittedly small following of just 2.7%.

Arsenal are preparing for a trip to Newcastle, whose pre-season has been less than smooth sailing after Rafa Benitez left the club over the summer.

Meanwhile, Liverpool defender Alexander-Arnold currently has 2.3% support in the poll, his backers putting faith in his 14 attacking returns and Liverpool’s 21 clean sheets last season.

Sadio Mané (£11.5m), Callum Wilson (£8.0m), Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) are the only other options backed by more than 1%.

Was reading an article the other day, no idea who wrote it so I’m not going to take the credit for it and I’m certainly para phrasing and not quoting it word for word but some of you guys should take this into account when making ur selections as I see many of you guilty of things pointed out in this article.
    - Start of the season you should have no punts, just boring average team. Punts might get you some points but t they backfire you’re behind from the start
    - you have a pool of players you like right, let’s say 25 possibilities and you need to whittle it down. Well whittle it down in this manner.
    - remove every player who is it risk of rotation or not starting
    - remove every player from newly promoted teams
    - remove every player that is a punt
    - remove every player that is injury prone
    - remove every pleaser that switched teams

Once you have done that your list should be considerably shorter and now just players who always start, have been proven in the pl and no dead weight. It might be boring and it might be simple but a lot of you here going against almost all these points. Almost all of you have newly promoted players in your team and players who are certainly not guaranteed minutes. Take zinchenko for instance, he is a massively popular pick around here because you want a cheap Man City asset. But no way is he guaranteed anything, we all know what pep is like. Imo your better off going with someone safe like vertonghen.

Anyone I’m sure many people will disagree with what I wrote but it was actually written by someone in elite64

How is this and advice? You can disagree with it but it’s certainly not bad advice. Telling people to avoid newly promoted players, those who aren’t guaranteed minutes and those who changed teams. If you think that’s bad advice then wow really. The bad advice is what I see here in 99% of the comments. For instance, is this guy nailed? Random internet person, he should be ok. Great I will put him in.
Lol now that is shorty advice. What I wrote might be boring but well that’s how you do good at fantasy sorry to break the news to you. Differentials and punts fail more times then they pay off. Your always better to be one week behind a bandwagon then one week before

I don't agree with a few of those points, but that's the beauty of the game, it's all opinions. If I stuck to this rigidly, Michu wouldn't have made it into my team in GW1 a few years back. Last season I started the season with Peltier, Kamara, Patricio etc and it didn't end up too bad.

Yea ur right it’s not the be all and end all but the player like u mentioned is punty, it just paid off for you. This season I’m going against this by having Trossard. Which is a punt for sure but his price point, and I have watched him play enough times to know he is a class player. Plus Brighton’s fixtures couldn’t be better so I’m willing to take that risk

Think there's loads of truth in this, but also think Zinchenko is a dubious example. He's clearly first choice until Mendy gets physically and mentally fit, and that may be never. And even if he's only nailed for the first, say 4 GWs, by that time Cancelo will be first-choice RB and that's an easy switch.

Generally, though, I agree it's best to play it safe early-doors. That was definitely true last year.

I think this pretty much comes down to appetite for risk. The approach described is low risk and less fun. Some people prefer much higher risk. I prefer a middle ground which applies the above approach for much of the team and then has three riskier players in my 11.

    Repost:

Hey Everyone...just a quick RMT. Hoping you guys can settle my mind. Kinda feel like this team is a bit safe/boring until trends/form start to appear...yes/no?

    GK: Pope, Heaton
DEF: VVD, Coleman, Taylor (Bur), Guilbert, Lund
MID: Salah, KDB, Fraser, Perez, Donck
    FWD: Kane, Wilson, Jota

    Questions:

    1. I’m fine to rotate a combo keeper/defender set to begin with hence the double-up. Do you think Taylor and Guilbert ok?

    2. Is KDB really worth it to begin with or should I look at others...maybe Moura or Pulisic? The idea is to get Son when he returns.

    Open to any suggestions...

    Thanks Everyone!

Really want Pepe, but don't have free budget. Trying to get FPL to accept a payment plan.

Who is the best Liverpool defender to own? Who is second? Who is third?

    How many will you own?

      Robertson-Van Dijk-TAA

Many people on Reddit are considering TAA as a must-have in everyone's defense, but I don't agree that much. He isn't that nailed as it looks. Gomez main competition there. With Robertson, it's totally different, doesn't have a rotation risk and could offer a lot of attacking returns which I really don't see in TAA.

Why can't you see attacking returns in TAA? He scored and assisted more last season, off a lot less minutes.

Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, van Dijk... in that order. I'm starting with the two full backs.

1 but struggling with this. TAA seems more exciting - Robbo more guaranteed

      Depends quite a lot really.

TAA - Pros: Explosive, Big Hauls, On Freekicks and Corners (watch out when he crosses for Origi though 😉 )
Cons: Less likely to start than the other 2

Robbo: - Pros: Most nailed between the 2 fullbacks. Steady value and flow of points
      - Cons: not too explosive, might be rotated from time to time.

VVD: - Pros: Most nailed between the 3. Most likely to score goals. 0.5 cheaper
      - Cons: weak attacking return potential if he doesnt score.

Depends on the game plan really.

Robbo - Long term VERY safe bet.
      VVD - Long term, cheaper
TAA - Short(er) term, best price change bet, odd freekick in for the differential, (least owned)

Im going with TAA because Im hoping for an explosive start, and he's the least owned (BY FAR) between the 3. Meaning if any of these players will rise in value, TAA will most probably have the biggest Price Elasticity Factor between the 3.

TAA and Rob with a decent 4.5m to cover TAA no shows. Sorted.

Have 2. Going by last Sunday, Virgil looks in the mood to cause terror to oppo defences in addition to his own defending.
Of the 2 7m wing-backs, after great deliberation, I've concluded that it's a case of swings & roundabouts.

TAA and Robbo for me, though the threat of Gomez plus TFF's hot topic on the effect of Milner on TAA's output makes TAA a tentative choice.

Last year - goals - assists
      VVD 4 - 4
      Robertson 0 - 12
      TAA 1 - 13

Yeh, last year. In the last few games Virgil was going up a lot and he's continued that in the CS. Pretty sure he has goals and assists in him this campaign.

Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, van Dijk... in that order. I'm starting with Alexander-Arnold and van Dijk, who I think is only marginally behind Robertson so I'm happy to save the 0.5..

I'm going to own all 3. If they can get close to last season's output then they are superb value.

    Guys, your thoughts about this?

    Ryan-Heaton

    Robertson-Zinchenko-Coleman-Dunk-Diop

    Maddison-Sigurdsson-BSilva-Salah-Moura/Lamela/Ceballos (if he's nailed)/Grealish

    Wilson/Lacazettte-King-Jota

*if Lacazette is fit for GW1 I would go with him and Grealish as my 5th mid, if not then Wilson with one of these three options (Moura/Lamela/Ceballos).
