Captain Sensible

Who is the best FPL captain for Gameweek 1?

Fantasy Premier League managers are considering captains from three different clubs ahead of the Gameweek 1 deadline.

Liverpool host Norwich on Friday night, Manchester City travel to West Ham on Saturday lunch-time and Spurs conclude that day’s action by hosting Aston Villa.

For the first Gameweek of the new season, the majority of the captain attention is on these three games.

We’ve analysed as much data as we can to assess the individual potential of the key players, as well as the quality of defences they are going up against.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access the full article.

However, non-members can still enjoy our analysis of the results of our captain poll.

It is also worth clarifying for those used to Captain Sensible articles from recent seasons that we can only start to look at the last four (or so) Gameweeks once we have more data in the bank for 2019/20.

Captain Poll

The results of the captain poll as of Thursday night

The poll for Gameweek 1 is perhaps one of the most one-sided we’ve seen in quite some time.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) has absolutely run away with it, securing 62.8% of the vote at the time of writing.

That is not surprising at all considering the Egyptian has been the top-scoring FPL asset in both of his seasons at Liverpool.

He was especially deadly at Anfield last season too, scoring 13 of his 22 goals at home (59.1%).

Meanwhile, Norwich arrive in the Premier League with concerns over their defence.

They conceded 57 goals in 46 matches last season and recorded clean sheets in just 28% of those.

Furthermore, the Canaries’ defence has suffered injury problems during pre-season, Christoph Zimmerman (£4.5m), Timm Klose (£4.5m) and Grant Hanley (£4.0m) all missing various summer friendlies with knocks.

In his Thursday press conference, Daniel Farke revealed that only the latter of those three would be fit for Gameweek 1.

Kane is the most popular differential option this week

Way off in second place in the poll is Harry Kane (£11.0m) who starts the new season at home to newly-promoted Aston Villa.

They shipped a total of 61 goals during their promotion-winning campaign and recorded just 12 clean sheets, the tenth-best in the Championship.

That record has obviously handed optimism to those looking at Kane as a differential this weekend.

The Spurs forward has never scored in Gameweek 1 of a Premier League season though.

Sterling faces a trip to West Ham on Saturday lunch time

Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) sits even further down the ranking with the backing of just 6.4% in our poll at the time of writing.

He faces a West Ham defence that did not inspire confidence in 2018/19 and upon his last visit to the London Stadium, he came away with a goal and an assist.

Manchester City generally have a good record at West Ham too, scoring at least four times in each of their last four visits to the Hammers.

For that reason, if he starts, Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) could reward the 1.9% of managers who are handing him the captain’s armband for Gameweek 1.

However, it must be said that his late return to pre-season from the Copa America, and his lack of minutes in the Community Shield final could suggest he could take up only a substitute’s role.

It says a lot about Aguero’s Fantasy stock right now that both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m) won more support in the Captain Poll than him.

The Arsenal forward sits in fourth place in the poll with an admittedly small following of just 2.7%.

Arsenal are preparing for a trip to Newcastle, whose pre-season has been less than smooth sailing after Rafa Benitez left the club over the summer.

Meanwhile, Liverpool defender Alexander-Arnold currently has 2.3% support in the poll, his backers putting faith in his 14 attacking returns and Liverpool’s 21 clean sheets last season.

Sadio Mané (£11.5m), Callum Wilson (£8.0m), Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) are the only other options backed by more than 1%.

No. You'll get what you pay for, but he's not exactly set the world on fire so far and whilst he plays most games he doesn't always play all the 90 in the games he plays. Siggy will play 90 x38 if fit.

      Firstly, it's not *that* template.

Secondly, why would you care if it was? Pay no attention to the people who go on about it; they're sneery idiots who have seldom been doing this for very long.

      Thirdly:
      - personally, I'm staying away from Man U defenders for the moment, let's see how they start the season first
      - same with Chelsea (and I am a Chelsea fan), although I think Barkley isn't a bad punt
      - I'm not sure about Heaton as a fire and forget keeper: maybe get in Pope (or other) and rotate.

          A 5.5 and a 4.5? Zinchenko/Stones/Coleman/someone else you like and there's a recent Hot Topic about 4.5 defs.

That said, if you also need to find an extra 0.5 for a starting GK, you might be better off with a rotating pair of 4.5's and an extra half mil for firefighting after the first week.

[Full disclosure, I am very much biased towards rotation. This is unfashionable and you may have other ideas]

Ake and Stones perhaps? you reckon thats looks better with them than AWB and Zouma? Not sure about rotating keepers, knowing my luck ill always choose the wrong one! Thnaks so much for the feedback though mate, much appreciated... Might stay with Pope and Button...

Seeing as it's crunch day I figured I'd share my team planner spreadsheet again. It's got a transfer, chip, bench system, automatically updates fixture changes such as blanks, DGWs, & highlights potential blanks. If you want to quickly see how that 3 premium draft vs your 2 premium draft looks over multiple weeks and not just GW1 then this is the tool for you. Even the best made plans can be thrown out the window with a panic GW3 WC but it's better to have solid plans to throw out the window than not have plans IMO.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1y_olsTbMU7hHLlmpPXBeDKTkB0QzTu6EVM7CIJ3CnTs/copy

Please note this page is designed with Desktop in mind as I do all my FPL work on my computer. It does work on Mobile also but isn't designed specifically for that. Read through the Notes page before filling it in to get a sense of how the sheet works and any questions or bugs please ask/report them below!

    Sheet 1 - Notes

Quick guide to the spreadsheet with the most important information on functionality. Please read fully! Suggestions for improving or making this page more clear? Hit me up!

    Sheet 2 - Team

The meat & bones of the sheet. Fill in your GW1 Team and the rest of the sheet will automatically fill up. Here's a few notable things from top to bottom...

Current GW & Chip indicator. As you use Chips they won't be an option again. When using your FH chip the following week your team should reset. This is shown working in GW2

    Tick Boxes to Bench players

Player names from Drop down list, start typing a player name here in GW1 and suggestions will pop up

Following the Player names are 2 Columns, the 1st with their upcoming fixture and the following blank to allow space for DGWs

Fixtures are colour coded for Easy/Hard/Normal/Potential Blank/Blank. Liverpool have a confirmed blank on GW18 so have a look to see this in action.

Potential Blank, Blank, & DGWs will be automatically updated.

Free Transfers Tracker, accumulates when you don't enter any transfers below it. Using your FH or WC chip resets the counter

Transfer Space. The 1st column is for the outgoing player, 2nd column for the incoming player. This is shown working in GW2

    Sheet 3 - Tools

This sheet is where Hard/Easy fixture data is pulled from. Edit this as you see fit ensuring to keep the current formatting

Future tools will be published here

    Sheet 4 - Fixtures (Hidden)

No worries & enjoy if you end up using it. Been building it for years now, adding a little bit or improving something when I get the chance (international breaks are a spreadsheets best friend!)

I'm starting to think I should go VvD over TAA because of security of starts and V's ridiculously high ownership (Robbo is nailed in my team). Thoughts?

I would go with VVD as he will probably score similar points and is 0.5 cheaper.

It’s too early to worry about ownership - you hopefully won’t be competing with the masses anyway.

I find it best to wait until week 7+ to start worrying about ownership (specifically top 10k ownership) then as the season progresses ownership becomes more and more important as it enables you to decide where to take calculated risks against the template

I'm sticking to TAA & Robbo. Easy to downgrade if needed and season is just beginning anyways.

Question, in the members area what does goal involvement include? For example Yerry Mina has a goal involvement of 7 but only 1 goal and not assists. Is it assisting the assister?

I’m playing a 352 with 3 premium defenders. I’d like a regular starter for my 4th defender but don’t want to spend more than 4.5, any recommendations?

Currently deciding between Montoya, Dunk & maybe a Burnley defender although not sure which is best from Lowton, Taylor & Pieters. Suppose I could get a villa defender but I already have Heaton.

Hadn’t considered a West Ham defender. Will give that some thought. Thanks

I'm on the same situation, I'm going with Guilbert as my 4th defender
