Palace and Everton reward defensive investment in 0-0 draw

Crystal Palace 0-0 Everton

Goals: None

Assists: None

Bonus Points: Yerry Mina x3 (£5.5m), Michael Keane x2 (£5.5m), Jordan Pickford x1 (£5.5m)

Crystal Palace and Everton played out a 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park that highlighted both sides’ serious need for a goalscoring forward in the 2019/20 Premier League campaign.

However, it left Fantasy managers invested in the defences of each team delighted to get clean sheets at the first time of asking.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (£8.0m) had two excellent chances for Everton but couldn’t find the back of the net, disappointing the 14% of Fantasy maangers who trusted him with a spot in their Gameweek 1 sqauds.

Meanwhile, strong defending from Michael Keane (£5.5m) and his colleagues, as well as some smart stops from Jordan Pickford (£5.5m), kept Palace at bay to ensure the Merseysiders continued their strong defensive form from the end of the 2018/19 season.

That was welcome news for those who had been a little concerned about the value in Everton’s defence in light of Idrissa Gueye’s departure and Kurt Zouma (£5.0m) remaining at Chelsea.

Palace grew into the game and were helped by the introduction of Zaha

However, it must be said that Palace did spend the first 65 minutes without their talismanic forward player Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) who missed pre-season due to involvement in the African Cup of Nations and reportedly handed in a transfer request towards the end of the summer window.

Selected by 19.8% of managers ahead of Gameweek 1, Zaha was omitted from the starting XI by Roy Hodgson, but came off the bench to a raucous ovation from the Selhurst faithful indicating the fans are both appreciative and understanding of the Ivorian’s situation despite reportedly trying to force a move to Everton.

“I only really saw him on Friday, basically, because I sent him home on Thursday and we didn’t train on Wednesday. But if you are asking me how was he yesterday, he was fine. And today in the dressing room, and in the game? He was excellent in the dressing room, and you could see what he did in the game. The fact is that the situation has been and gone. I am sure Wilf will now make certain he brings his straw to the water to help us have a good season, just like he has in the past two seasons [when I have been here].” – Roy Hodgson

Saturday’s fixture against Everton highlighted that in spite of the situation regarding Zaha and the question marks over his commitment to the club, this is a player with raw and unparalleled ability in Palace’s squad and someone who could make a serious attacking impact for the Eagles in 2019/20. It took him coming on to spark Palace into life.

“I thought he handled it very well. The crowd helped didn’t it, giving him such a great reception. It was nice to have him available. I thought the two front players did an exceptional job, but they were tiring, and it was good to have him to come on, and Connor Wickham too to help keep that momentum that we had going in the latter part of the game. It was never going to be easy to break them down, although I hoped that we might eventually.” – Roy Hodgson

Max Meyer (£5.5m) had a string of promising chance for Palace, but the German couldn’t find a clinical cutting-edge as Hodgson’s side laboured in vain.

Christian Benteke (£6.0m) also fired a number of blanks with the Belgian appearing to be still short of confidence and unlikely to shoulder responsibility for Palace’s goals this season.

Richarlison and Everton’s attacking players are in need of some help, which Kean should bring them

It was a similar story for Everton who began the match without new signing Moise Keane (£7.0m) in the starting line-up, the striker having not been involved in any of the Toffees’ pre-season matches.

After arriving as a 69th-minute substitute for Dominic Calvert Lewin (£6.0m), he showed glimpses of quality that suggested the hype surrounding his switch from Juventus could be justified.

The Italian should play an important role for the Toffees this season but may need time to find his feet, as well as earning the trust of Fantasy managers with more proven options such as Sigurdsson and Richarlison (£8.0m) currently available.

Pickford’s defensive performance underlined his value to Fantasy managers with a first clean sheet of the season. The defensive quartet of Lucas Digne (£6.0m), Yerry Mina (£5.5m) Seamus Coleman (£5.5m) and Keane shielded the England international from Palace’s efforts in the second half and will have inspired confidence in their Fantasy owners ahead of Watford’s trip to Goodison Park in Gameweek 2.

Everton could have some central midfield issues after Gomes (right) went off injured and Schneiderlin was shown a red card

However, an injury to Andre Gomes (£5.5m) is an area of potential concern for Everton’s central midfield options. He was replaced by new signing Jean-Philippe Gbamin (£5.0m) in the 45th minute.

Silva confirmed that the 26-year-old is set to be assessed in the coming days and admitted that Everton suffered when he had to come off.

“The moment the game changed was the injury to André Gomes. We hope it’s not serious. When I changed it with Jean-Philippe Gbamin he had some problems, which is normal he needs to adapt, and when you sign new players, young players they need time to adapt and it was one of the keys for us because we started losing easy balls during that second-half.” – Marco Silva

Furthermore, Everton are already down one option in central midfield after Morgan Schneiderlin‘s (£4.5m) red card in the second half. He was dismissed for a second bookable offence in the 76th minute and will miss that meeting with Watford next weekend.

“I didn’t see the first [booking]. But the referee gave the second. For me it was not, but Morgan should not react like he did, if you are playing with a yellow card, you have a risk.” – Marco Silva

Not a fan of using FTs on keepers but I'm sat here with Pope the Button combo and 0.5m itb. Very tempted to do Button to Adrian to see me through Pope's awkward upcoming fixtures and then lose Adrian when I wildcard, whenever that is.

Sorry - misread this as Pope to Adrian. Still not sure if this is a good move locking out a Liverpool slot with a player with a low ceiling.

On TTA and Salah atm. Can't afford another Liv mid/fwd spot. Could get to either Gomez or Matip but don't particularly want to. Taking up that third spot not a problem really.

If that's the case then there could be value in bringing in Adrian.

Yeah, but if my wildcard is still intact and not needed when Allison returns that would use another FT. But it would leave 0.5m for other areas.

Yeah, depends on whether you expect to play your wildcard around the time he returns. I guess Button to Adrian isn't a bad idea either for an extra 0.5.

Yeah maybe. But having a nailed, shortish term as it is, Liverpool defensive asset at 4.5m is a gift.

I know It’s easy to say in hindsight but I ended up going KDB and Siggy over Sterling and McGinn.. would be sitting on 97 points now and well inside top 10k.. instead 76 and have to claw my way back playing the long game

well i´ve made a very decent squad but ended up with 53 points. Going a little different, Firmino, Sigurdsson and Rose got med a total of 10 points. If you saw those games, that´s low. You can say i was punished by neither getting Sterling nor Kane, but instead for a large bunks of mid price options. Kane was 5 minutes away from blanking and Firmino spurred away at least 2 big chances and should have had plenty more than his 5 points, Sigurdsson one big miss and teed up 2 great chances. Rose cretaed Spurs 2 big chances apart from their goals. My point is that this game is abit og luck, circumstances and bad judgment. I was on the wrong side of any-)

      Still 37 gws left...

Your last point is key. Such a long way to go and I think you need to factor in at least 2 GW’s to see how your squad is going. Sterling/Kane could both blank next week playing each other and your mid priced players could soar. That would even out the discrepancy of this GW. Best to remain patient and save a FT

that was the plan, by doing so, i would almost by certainty have a very good built team for GW2 so i could get that reshuffle in GW3. I see a lot of teams that will have huge problems if one or two players is injured, I´ll afford to have 4 injuries nd still get a decent team out (rose vs City away admittedly not the best fixture mind you) but you never know.

It was a bit of an unlikely result in my view, how many times are Brighton going to score 3 from 3 shots on target (5 in total) and keep a clean sheet when they faced 11?

After that I’d be looking at Kean, if he is starting, or Haller. I’d like to see Haller in a game where he actually has a bit of the ball first. He looked decent vs city but not really a fair fixture to evaluate him.

double up here and no need to do anything before City in Gw3. Villa ships goals, that could be a goalfest. Unlike Sheffield they will attack more thus more open games. Using a -4 in GW3 to adjust so i might end up benching the one i might keep. With Bournemouth being so unreliable i might just go for the cheapest one, King.

Got 5 points and will help me transition to Kane if need be by gw3. Playing up top for Spurs is never a poor pick.

They only had him in the vain hope that he covered not having Kane? At least that was my thinking and the plan was to get rid by GW3.

            Morning all

            Button > Adrian 1FT?

            Other keeper is Pope

Wasting a FT as cant see any other move other than King out for a 6.5-7m striker but think that’s a bit knee jerky

If you have 2 Liverpool, get him, if you have 3 it isn't worth the 2 transfers to get him (we established on here yesterday).

Sitting on 98 points with no playing keeper unless Darlow plays today. Had Pope and then was tinkering and removed him for darlow just to remind myself to think about which keeper to put in. Needless to say as the deadline approached I forgot and then couldn't get internet access!

                  TLDR:
My first transfer thus has to be a keeper. Heaton, Ryan or Pope?

I would go Ryan or Heaton for the immediate fixtures but Pope isn't a bad choice. I'm on Heaton not sure how many cleans to expect but good for save points and they do have good fixtures

on 105, with Martial to play.

But I have a forwards headache.

My plan prior to GW1 was to swap origi to greenwood for GW2. But Deeney seems an error. Maybe I need to ship him first.

Deeney owner, not seen the highlights yet but he has the potential to brace on the weaker teams especially on pens.

Is Emery a manager that will thrust in Pepe and Cabellos from the start? If he goes all out attack and they gel it could be a bloodbath. That attack scares me while their defense entices the opposition to attack

Looked decent but nothing amazingly special, had a few nice dribbles and as you can imagine when slurs were on top he was pretty high up. Would be very surprised if he lasted the season though. Spurs in general didn't look defensively strong and couldn't get away with that Vs better teams, kwp wasn't solely to blame but he is one of the weak pieces

I did a different kind of calculation to realize the value of the 6.5M-7.0 defenders over 6.5M-7.5M Forwards.

For ease of understanding, the defenders I will consider are Van Dijk, TAA, Robertson and Laporte.

The forwards will be King, Jimenez, Barnes and Wood

Last season, Van Dijk had 20 CS, 4g, 4a 22 BAPS
                                Robertson 21 CS, 12 A 29 BAPS
                                TAA 16 CS 1G 13A (over 2400 minutes) 25 BAPS
                                Laporte 3G 3A 18 CS 16 BAPS

Assuming Liverpool will regress a bit this season in terms of keeping cs, the average of the 4 Defenders for the sake of this argument, I'm assuming:
                                16 CS 2G 6A 20 BAPS

                                Now, for the Strikers,
                                Jimenez 13 G 10 A 31 BAPS
                                King 12 G 3 A 20 BAPS
                                Barnes 12 G 3A (just under 2400 Minutes) 13 BAPS
                                Wood 10 G 3A (around 2500 minutes) 17 BAPS

Assuming 6.5M~ strikers has a better season this time around (Pukki/Jota may replace these players as better alternatives in this category, but I wanted to only include strikers from last season), the average would be:
                                15G 7A 20 BAPS
(considered a bit higher to calculate in-form striker transfer ins)

                                So the comparison now,
                                Defenders - 16CS 2G 6A 20 BAPS = 114
                                Strikers - 15 G 7A 20 BAPS = 101

Despite downplaying the potential of the defenders and giving more of a perfect scenario with the strikers, they were quite easily beaten. Sorry, if this was something probably discussed before. I just wanted to raise some counte arguments for people who considers 6.5M strikers to still be at the same level of 6.5M defenders.

Good comparison. For completeness, it is worth allowing yourself an extra 0.5 million for forwards (ie you need to compare a 6 million defender against a 6.5 million forward).

This is because you can get 4 million defenders, but the base price of a forward is 4.5.

Agreed, that's why I calculated Jimenez in the mix, and wanted to include Wilson too, but he was a bit more out of the price range.

Pretty much why a lot of people have gone with double Liverpool defence.

Over the season you 100% take the defenders, but we have transfers.

The forwards could score a large chunk of those points in patches and if you get on and off them at the right times then they will outscore the defenders collectively.

It's possible, but getting striker transfer right is a difficult thing to do as well. And going 4 at the back doesn't mean sacrificing the forward spots, you still can go 433 or 442 depending on your preference.

And we have all ditched Jimenez when his fixtures turned bad last season, only to see him score against the harder oppositions. In my opinion, it's as easy to get striker transfer right as it is to get it wrong. So it will balance out.

This doesn’t work because you can score reasonably well with a 4.5-5.5M defender but not well at all with a similarly priced midfielder. It’s the difference between the two pairs so this analysis is flawed

No standout 6.5 M striker yet. Maybe Pukki, but tough fixtures. Jota could be one, but tougher fixtures as well. Best to ride one more week.

It's a problem with the website. It's happened before, was fixed and now is back again.

It is the advert network the website uses being hijacked by rogue adverts that aren't following the rules of the as network they are on.

It's a really old problem and one of the key benefits of adblockers.

When a website outsources who provides the adverts then they have no control over some rogue person deciding to inject JavaScript in the advert block to redirect users to scam sites

Adblock is the key to a nice internet experience

Ceballos & Barkley could become bandwagons by the end of today is they both start.

Ceballos most likely won't. Barkley may get subbed around 60
