Captain Poll

Salah and Sterling expected to battle for Gameweek 2 captaincy

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) are expected to do battle for the Gameweek 2 captaincy.

The Egyptian was the overwhelming favourite for the armband in Gameweek 1 and rewarded his backers with a 12 point haul against Norwich.

However, Sterling went one better by netting a hat-trick and coming away from a 5-0 win over West Ham with a 20-point haul.

That big score is likely to inspire a host of Fantasy managers to captain the Englishman in Gameweek 2 as Spurs come to the Etihad Stadium.

Sterling was involved in 20 goals at home last season, 12 his own and eight assists, only Salah registering more involvements in front of his own fans (21).

Meanwhile, Spurs looked far from assured defensively as took their time to get into gear against Aston Villa in Gameweek 1.

However, Salah faces a trip to Southampton, a team he is more than capable of registering attacking involvement against.

Last season the Egpytian scored more goals away from home than any other player while Southampton kept just three clean sheets in front of their own fans.

Only Manchester United managed fewer than that in the whole of 2018/19 (two).

After registering a 13-point haul against Aston Villa, there is plenty of interest in Harry Kane (£11.0m).

However, it seems unlikely that many will back him for the captaincy considering it’s a trip to Manchester City up next.

More likely to trouble the favourites as a differential option is Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m).

He scored the only goal in Arsenal’s 1-0 win at Newcastle and faces a Gameweek 2 Saturday lunch-time meeting with Burnley.

You can now vote in the Gameweek 2 captain poll either below or in the website’s side-bar.

Joe and David will be discussing the captaincy on our YouTube channel at 12:30 pm on Monday afternoon too.

I took a -8 to get him in which I would not necessarily suggest is wise. Just wanted to move on him quickly and avoid drifting behind quickly.

I really do think he'll smash it this year.

Very strange that people transfer out players just because they blanked. If King/Jota/Perez/similar would have scored they would have 4/5 points more and people wouldn't transfer them out. However, it seems that a lot of people are willing to voluntarily take -4 points, just because they didn't get +4. Strange reasoning: Seems like people think/feel that -4 from a hit is less bad than not getting +4 from a player.

To compare with last year: King and Richarlison were 6.5 and returned 15/16 attacking returns over the season, and were considered decent options in that price range. That means that they will give attacking returns in less than 50% of gameweeks, and still be decent players. If you are considering removing a player now, then you should not have him in the first place (except Allison).

Also note that the first gameweek is somewhat of an anomaly: All of the teams which will probably end 6-10 place didn't score: Chelsea, Wolves, Everton, Leicester, West Ham. A lot of the mid priced mids/forwards are in these teams. This will not happen every week.

Making transfers is part of the game. Being aggressive with transfers is just as viable as being careful and cagey.

After Utd's 5-1 against Cardiff last season the winners were the ones who jumped straight on Rashford and Pogba, got them at their base prices and scored a lot of points before the more hesitant players made the same transitions in their teams two or three weeks later. Same with people with Jota after gwk1. Those who made the immediate switch to Richarlison gained in points and team value (even including his red card).

There are obviously plenty of examples when going early has been costly and it would have been better to wait but both are viable strategies. It's all well and good people saying that you picked them for a reason so should hold them for a minimum of x amount of weeks but lots of people pick players with the view of making quick transitions and use their mid-priced slots as placeholders for the next form player.

Playing the likes of Lund, Taylor and McGinn over Kane is just pure masochism, if you plan on benching any 10+mil player no matter the fixture he should not be in your squad then.
Either play Kane or transfer him out for Auba this week

I guess we won't know how many people might back Kane as captain if he's not even in the poll...!

General (not necessarily FPL) thoughts on Emerson for Chelsea. I didnt see the whole game just highlights but in those highlights he had a couple of very decent shots on goal. Do you think he'll nail down the left back side ahead of Alonso?

Chelsea fan here. I think it’s his spot to lose. Imagine Alonso plays in the Super-Cup on Wed.

Looked good going forward so point potential is high BUT I wouldn’t be interested right now until Chelsea show some kind of form defensively.

What should I do with my FT this week (0.0 ITB)? Thinking of saving.

      McGovern, Henderson
      Montoya, Rico, Digne, Alexander-Arnold, VVD
      Salah, KDB, Perez, Dendocker, Robinson
      Wilson, Ings, Kane

      Cheers!

Moura - City (a) & Perez - Chelsea (a) kind of making my team look a bit ugly! Banking the FT still...

my theory is always attacking player first before defender..but then it depends on the opposition.

Off topic: anyone know why trossard did not play or if he has any chance of playing next game Who played instead of him?

          Ryan
