patience is a lesson harshly learnt! i took about 100 points in transfer hits last year. I'm going to be alot more conservative this year. 97 allows you an average game week and 2 transfers to ponder.

I averaged 1 hit pr. gameweek last 2 seasons.
I know hits ain't exactly perfect, but if you make some nice transfers those points will come back fast alongside an improved TV.

So because you don't own a player like Bilva or Trossard, and because pretty much all your players delivered, then you can't make a transfer?

      What a pile of **** ! 😀

You'll be in the same boat as thousands & thousands of casuals with nearly 100 points leaving their team thinking they got it right from the get go.

I'll eat you all up from behind making those transfers 😉

I'm in the same boat BUT I could do Pope to Adrian. Planning on captaining Auba, and having the opposition goalkeeper in my team feels a bit self defeating.

Annoying thing is that Pope's fixtures after that look fine, so really I am only transferring in a new keeper for one match, and will have to do another to get rid when Alisson is back and fit. Think I'll save.

What to do with the below team? Completely messed up my score by changing Sterling/Coleman/Guilbert to Bilva/Digne/Robertson just before deadline, only got 66 points! Not sure Bilva will play again.. I know it seems early but considering the WC..!

    Ryan
    TAA - Robertson - Digne
    Bilva - Salah - Perez - Moura
    Auba (c) - King - Benteke

    Button - Lundstram - Dendonker - Rico

I did the exact same thing. Hoped KDB could cover Sterling, but he seemed quite deep again at times and Sterling well forward. And Moura was always a 1 week punt to see what was the best 7.5 or 8m around him (kept 0.5 itb).

As it turns out, McGinn is still the same player in the prem, Villa attack, and also have great fixtures (BMouth at home this week).

I think you just have to consider the likelihood of that -4 paying you back over the next few weeks. I'd say it will and very possibly even this week.

KDB - Ster is a perfect example showing how there is no such thing as "cover". But, it's just one of the silly things that keeps on going around here.

It seems that people have different goals while playing fpl. My goal is to try to maximize the expected number of points. However, it seems some people rather have the goal of doing well relative to (certain) others, for instance winning their leagues and so on. Some people try to get to the very top by playing higher variance strategies. This will have consequences for your choices and advice:

If I think Aubameyang will outscore Kane, I will pick him, even if Kane has 50% ownership and Aubameyang has 10%. If you play relative to others, you might pick Kane, to play on lower variance relative to others. If you play high variance strategies, you generally will own and captain slightly unusual people. Probably you will do worse than the safe "maximize number of points"-strategy, but some gameweeks (and seasons) the high variance pays off, and you will do much better. (Altough, the seasons you don't, which is most, then your bad results is not unlucky, but a result of a chosen risk).

What is your goal? If you haven't thought about this, then maybe you should. Also, what your goal is influences the kind of advice you give, and the person wanting advice does not necessarily have the same goal as you.

My goal is to have ten outfielders who can all score goals and get assists and a cheap keeper who can get 150, then see where it gets me. It's easy to be empathetic, don't impose your own views too much, listen.

I just want to make profit in the money league I'm in. So pretty much maximize the number of points but I do like to take some conscious risks and punts here and there. Makes the game a bit more fun 😀

    5. Brosstan
      • 9 Years

You shouldn't care about high or low variance, only average expected points. Always pick the one you think have highest expexted average, regardless of ownership

      1. Turambar
        • 6 Years
        4 years, 7 months ago

I agree. Or at least, I also play the game that way. But from reading the comments here, it seems like a lot of people play it differently. And it might make sense: If your goal is to beat your friends in your league, and you are leading, then having a similar team to them might secure your league win (but will probably lose you overall points).

      2. TheDragon
        • 5 Years

This is an interesting view. Here is a good question for people to consider about their style of play:

Which would you rather in your team:

Player A: scores 100 points 10% of the time and 0 points 90% of the time - expected points = 10 per week

Player B; scores 9 points guaranteed every week.

Would you choose player A or B. A has higher expected points but much bigger variance

        1. The Overthinker
          • 7 Years

          B

        3. Turambar
          • 6 Years
          4 years, 7 months ago

In isolation I would choose A. However, due to team value purposes, it might be that in practice A goes down in value a lot more than B, so for price reasons maybe B.

If you downgrade the example to a more realistic example like:

          A: 50% 14 pts 50% 0 pts - excpected 7
          B: 100% 6 pts

          I would def choose A.

          1. TheDragon
            • 5 Years
            4 years, 7 months ago

Nice post - agree in your example most would pick A but II reckon in my ‘more extreme’ example most would pick B.

Theoretically I think you should pick the same answer to both - if not, where is the cross over point in terms of ‘too much variance’ either in reality or psychologically

            1. Turambar
              • 6 Years
              4 years, 7 months ago

              A related concept:

You could imagine two competing strategies for playing fpl.

              A: 50% chance of ending with 2400 pts, 50% 2200 pts - expected 2300
              B: 100% chance 2280 pts

I would choose A, even if the probability of getting a lower position than B is pretty high. It could even be true that B has the highest expected OR, even if A has higher expected points.

If you had that kind of foresight you'd of course go for A. What about the emotion over logic factor? when that player A has blanked 2-3 times whilst waiting on the inevitable 50% upturn..how many managers have panicked and jumped ship? You essentially need the balance of set and forget and risk taking jumping on the high gain variance. personally i'm going more conservative/patient as i tend to be a compulsive manager making subs saturday evening.

i think my overall goal is to win a mug and a rucksack so maybe i should go with A players till it happens!

To simplify in my mind...you need to average around 65 points a week to win the whole thing. if i can get 7 players that can get me a baseline 30 points then find the rest chasing big points from agressive transfers and captaincy. Thats how i want to try and play it. i'm not crazy enough to think i'll win it though. i reslly like your question and its hurt my monkey brain..

@Mods - I'm sure there are a few players new to the Premier League who are missing from this site from a data point of view. Neal Maupay is the one I've noticed as he's an enticing prospect at £6.0m.

What is the ETA for filling out the Members section database with the full list of players?

Draft league thoughts would be appreciated:

    A) Drop Pedro, pick up Mahrez
    B) Leave and keep Pedro

Despite the CHE result, Pedro is playing more minutes. Whereas Mahrez is a rotation risk, but seems to have a higher ceiling.

quite possible, dare I say likely, that neither of them play every week - Mahrez could be pretty good if Bernardo/KDB gets injured longer term - I'd punt on him and stick him on the bench I think

Play Lundstram (CRY) and bench KWP (mci)?

-> Rough estimated points something like 3-4p for Lund and 2p for KWP. This based on the massive amount of data points we have for this season. Would not surprised if Lundstram got an assist or even CS against settling CRY.

Lundstram is an odd one. Before the season the majority of Sheff Utd fans said he won't start GW1, now they're saying he'll be dropped GW2 despite being one of their better performers. Despite this I'd start him over KWP.

Regarding your point, nothing has changed between GW 1 and 2. No one wanted him to start GW 1, but it was evident from preseason that he was intended to be used as the defensive option, and Bournemouth away is a prime example for the use of this setup. In GW 2, they’re at home to Palace, one of the easiest games you’ll have on the calendar. I’ll be surprised if they go defensive again, especially when they have a much better player in Freeman on the bench.

Regarding him playing well, he did okay/better than expected and created two big chances, which is very cool for FPL, but he did close to nothing apart from them. To put into context, they looked far more threatening and almost immediately scored their goal once Lundstram was subbed out for Freeman.

Thanks for the info. I'm not quite sure Palace is one of the easiest games you'll have tho, they scored 32 goals away from home last season, more than Bournemouth scored at home, but let's wait and see.

Love this quote from Klopp on Lovren...

“I don’t exactly know about Dejan’s start at Liverpool but he made a few mistakes. People always have that in mind: ‘Oh, Lovren again!’, but I’m long in the business. I said to Dejan: ‘If somebody told me, come on, you have the chance, create a centre-half. We found a way to do it, genetically, bam, bam, bam.’ That’s him, strong, quick, both feet, can head like crazy, jumps through the roof. He’s all you need. Yes, a few things you can improve – his concentration. But these are human beings.”

        • 13 Years

Klopp is very good at being honest yet positive in a motivational way. Lovren's liked in the dressing room, you can tell that from the vlogs, videos etc. but it's on the pitch what matters most 🙂

Agree completely. He clearly cares about his players and gives them every chance to succeed, but the last line about his concentration levels is kind of key.

Does anyone know how I can reliably track down the teams of hall of fame players?

I'd like to take a look at Marc Rubinstein's team as he made some eally interesting points in his 'Meet the Manager' interview, and I want to see how they translated into his GW1 picks (albeit indirectly, given that interview was during last season)

The links in the hall of fame seem to be from last year

Watched the shef-bou highlights and Lundstram seemed really good for a £4.0 defender, made 3 passes which could have led to goals. Of course the full match might suggest otherwise and that he was actually poor but from what I saw I would be surprised if he were to get dropped, also wouldn't be surprised if he's got an assist or two in him soon

If I owned him I would be quite encouraged from what I saw, should get attacking returns in his next two home games
There are 5 players though vying for two spots though which is what really puts me off.
He's kind of a happy if I owned him, but wouldn't want to bring him in type player

They missed quite a few last season, think Vrancic scored the last one but he didn't start on Friday.

Vrancic, who is £6.5! Very odd pricing from fpl there
