Barnes brace sinks Saints as Pope returns to Fantasy form

Burnley 3-0 Southampton

Goals: Ashley Barnes x2 (£6.5m), Johan Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m)

Assists: Erik Pieters x2 (£4.5m)

Bonus Points: Barnes x3, Pieters x2, Nick Pope x1 (£4.5m), Gudmundsson x1

Ashley Barnes (£6.5m) did his best to blow Burnley’s pre-season trends out of the water in a 3-0 win over Southampton on Saturday.

The forward scored twice against the Saints after a campaign of summer friendlies in which he did not find the net once.

Barnes also played fewer minutes in those games than colleagues Chris Wood (£6.5m) and Jay Rodriguez (£6.0m) but still started alongside the New Zealand international at Turf Moor.

His two forward colleagues combined for 15 goals in pre-season but it was Barnes who showed the clinical edge in Gameweek 1.

Barnes scored a brace in Burnley’s 3-0 win over Southampton

However, in truth, the game was closer than the scoreline suggested.

Southampton had chances in the early stages with new signing Che Adams (£6.0m) and Nathan Redmond (£6.5m) hooking wide and stinging the palms of Nick Pope (£4.5m) respectively.

In fact, Burnley did not pose much of a threat in the first half other than a Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m) drive from the edge of the box that clipped the post. It was only in a 12-minute second-half spell that they scored three goals.

“It was a tight game and there wasn’t much in it, but I was so pleased with our mentality to stick at it. We started asking more questions in the second half and lifted the tempo and without putting them on the back foot we suddenly made like awkward.” – Sean Dyche

Barnes first capitalised on a Jannik Vestergaard (£5.0m) slip to connect with an Erik Pieters (£4.5m) clearance, drilling under Angus Gunn (£4.5m).

Minutes later, the former Plymouth Argyle striker was on hand again to double Burnley’s lead. This time there was more intention on Pieters’ ball into the box, an incredible cross to the back post where Barnes poked home.

“I have great admiration for him. This pre-season he didn’t score a goal and he looked hungry for it. The first goal was a fantastic touch and finish, it was great skill. His second finish was sublime, it’s a brilliant ball by Erik Pieters, but when centre-forwards finish like that it looks easy. It’s not easy when the ball is coming over your shoulder like that.” – Sean Dyche

It is worth highlighting the role that Pieters played in this win, as his 14-point score in Gameweek 1 was bettered only by Raheem Sterling‘s (£12.0m) 20-point haul.

Not only did the former Stoke man get two assists, but he also tacked on a clean sheet and two bonus points.

Pieters secured a great Gameweek 1 score but his place in the Burnley team could be short-lived

However, it would probably unwise to jump straight into including Pieters in our squads, for several reasons.

Firstly, while his cross for Barnes’ second goal was excellent, the assist for the first was nothing more than a clearance, that the striker was able to latch onto because of Vestergaard’s mistake.

Furthermore, it does seem likely that Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) will be the first choice left-back for Burnley this season.

The former Leeds United defender missed a portion of pre-season with an injury but still started two of the last three matches of the summer, while Pieters featured from the beginning only once in that run.

According to Burnley’s official website, Taylor was only omitted from the matchday squad for the Southampton clash “during a fast-track to get him up to match fitness.”

In our Team News content, we did think that Taylor would be a doubt to start this Gameweek 1 as he played in a reserve team game midweek a few days beforehand.

Fantasy managers looking at the Burnley defence will have to keep an eye on the left-back situation and Dyche’s next press conference ahead of Gameweek 2.

The third Clarets goal on Saturday came from Gudmundsson’s determination as he dispossessed Ryan Bertrand (£4.5m), bore down on goal from the right flank and curled an effort into the far corner of Gunn’s net.

Nick Pope played his first Premier League match since the 2017/18 campaign on Saturday

Meanwhile, it was rewarding for Fantasy managers to see goalkeeper Pope make his first Premier League appearance since the 2017/18 season on Saturday.

The Burnley shot-stopper picked up where he left off as a Fantasy asset too, keeping a clean sheet, making three saves and claiming one bonus point.

As per usual, the Clarets made life very comfortable for their goalkeeper, largely limiting Southampton to efforts from range, enabling Pope to make enough saves for that additional point.

It will be interesting to see how this tactic affects Arsenal in Gameweek 2, given how much of the Gunners’ play takes place inside the penalty box.

“Popey didn’t have a lot of do, which was also pleasing.” – Sean Dyche

“The lads have shielded me well in tough conditions, it was difficult to get going in a sense. The lads looked after me really well and I helped them out when I could. I feel better than before; I don’t think about it when I wake up in the morning. It’s in the past now, so I’m glad to get it behind me.” – Nick Pope

Meanwhile, despite the result probably being an unfair reflection of the match, concerns about Southampton’s defence under Ralph Hasenhüttl continue.

Admittedly, there was poor defending specifically from Vestergaard for two of Burnley’s goals but it has been some time since the Saints offered reliable clean sheet potential.

This performance does not bode well for Southampton as they prepare to host Liverpool in Gameweek 2, although it could help Fantasy managers make their captaincy decision.

I have Siggy and would normally agree. Concerned about all the disruption to their midfield (Gueye sold, Gomes injured, even Schneiderlein suspended) and their attack can't seem to get it together if we count GW1 as a continuation of pre-season. Keeping, but not feeling confident, and if he blanks then he could well be amakeqeight to bring Kane in GW3

Always planned to play King for the first two then dump before City once I had a better idea of who I want, which I am still going to do.

I didn't realise just how nice of a run City have after Spurs. Their next 9 league games from GW3 are:

bou, BHA, nor, WAT, eve, WOL, cpl, AVL, SOU

I already have double City in attack with Sterling and KDB but I think looking at that run I might have to change formation to the more inflexible 5 at the back and bring in one of the City defenders for King. Weakens my bench as it gives me two non playing 4.5m strikers but that run looks very tasty indeed. Plus as much as a lot of fuss is made over peoples bench strength, last season I rarely had bench players coming on and if I did it was very rarely more than my first sub, so I will be happy to take the risk with everyone's favourite friend, Dendoncker as my first sub.

I’m toying with this too - trouble is Zinchenko is realistically a 6 point player so you can probably cover that with other cheaper non city defenders/ players.

Laporte is the one who I’d get if I got one

I’m team Sterling & KDB too

yeah I must admit, it is very frustrating that the ceiling is so low. I am still considering it as it could be a lot of very consistent 6 pointers but it would certainly be nice to be hopeful of more. It's a shame Mendy isn't back yet. He would be a shoe in for me if I knew he would play.

            Ye 100% agree.

It’s so tricky because a city defender seems a no brainer but on the other hand the only one I’d want to own currently is Laporte and he is too expensive for me currently.

5-3-2 is a nightmare structure wise in terms of flexibility too particularly in terms of price movements as it’s typically attacking players who are bandwagons - another thing to throw into the mix

            1. Smurf
              • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Again, I agree regarding the structure. It would put me in a 5-4-1 and with the price points I would have, jumping on bandwagons would certainly be difficult which is a concern. On the other hand however I think the team I have picked (barring any injuries) kind of won't have any players I would like to let go for the most part.

Pope, Robertson, VVD, Digne, Salah, Sterling, KDB, Man City defender would make up 8 of my staring 11 each week. Considering their fixtures and type of player/position they would all be long term holds, meaning it's only really my other 3 spots that I would be willing to move on anyway so regardless of formation I don't have much wiggle room. Hmmmm.

                Im currently debating a Martial + Moura --> KDB + McGinn/Robinson

That would give me: VVD, TAA, Digne, Zinchenko, Salah, Sterling, KDB, Wilson, Murray /6.0M striker

Can anyone explain the data on the FPLstatistics site.

      Name.Club.Position.Status%Owned.PriceChgs.Target.
      Ederson Man City G A 23.2 £6.0m 0 90.0
      de Gea Man Utd G A 16 £5.5m 0 85.9
      Sterling Man City M A 36.7 £12.0m 0 84.9

      Origi Liverpool F A 6.6 £5.5m 0 57.0
      Martial Man Utd M A 8.4 £7.5m 0 56.1

What is the 'Target' figure and how is it calculated?
At what point can we safely priced a price change - is it based on the 'Target' figure surpassing a certain value?

Target of 100% or above means that player has chance of rising in price. It may happen or may not depending on various factors like number of WC transfers etc.

Similarly, -100% or more would indicate chance of dropping in price.

Assuming they would have to be a 5.5 it would have to be Stones (not sure on Cancelo or Zinchenko starts) or one of the United defenders. Probably one from Maguire or AWB.

Between Maguire, AWB or Stones I would probably plump for Maguire.

I may have missed this, but is there an article or thread about the changes to viewing other teams value, and transfers, and transfer history. You now can't view any of this on any other team than yourself. For those of us who play a of H2H leagues, it's going a take a lot of the tactics out of it.

Exactly same as you in terms of current defence

        - Emerson - Chelsea looked awful defensively and despite attacking returns a defenders points are based on a bedrock of clean sheets - so currently a no go for me

        - United - wait and see - I’m not convinced how many clean sheets they will keep (could have conceded a few va Chelsea) if they are good at the back then AWB and Maguire become very interesting - but not quite yet

        - City - awesome fixtures and awesome defence but rotation is rife. Zinchenko is realistically a 6 point max player so can live without him. Only one I’d want is Laporte (considering getting rid of 1 of Liverpool for him). If mendy gets back in the team though.... charrrrggeeee!!

Be good to hear others thoughts.

because united played awful but took their goals well, so the defenders racked up all the bps

I know what you mean about the dislike for 6 point max players. I think I'd put Laporte in that category too. Does he have genuine goal threat? I'm not sure. I feel confident that VVD will match or better last season's attacking numbers. I don't feel the same about Laporte, but maybe it's just me.

          1. Pukki Blinders
            • 4 Years

I agree. If liverpool and city keep similar clean sheets this season VVD will outscore Laporte by far

              • 6 Years
              4 years, 7 months ago

I didn't mean to make the comparison in a competition sense. Because you can easily have both in your team and I'm sure many do. I just wonder if Laporte's attacking numbers were a bit of a one off. It seems like every Liverpool corner take, VVD seems like a real threat every time. I don't see the same with Laporte.

Already asked myself that many, many times, and I believe captaining Auba and Kane alternatively for their home games will outscore a Salah/sterling perma-cap. The question after I had made that decision was which of Salah and Sterling I would start off with, and I felt Sterling just looked the better option.

That's my strategy and I am sticking with it for the time being. But still makes me nervous...

Other than penalties he offers only a fraction of the attacking threat of Wilson

Obviously there is a price difference to consider so depends what you would do with the cash but Wilson is a much better FPL prospect than King (and I say this as a King owner and Wilson non owner).

Nailed until he starts underperforming, will probably then lose his place.

Yeah and I think he is a decent option for bench. Unless Bruce changes his system Hayden played the Dendoncker role in their 532, makes a lot of forward runs and found himself in positions playing off of Joelinton at times. Unfortunately Newcastle’s Service isn’t that good otherwise he’d be very solid an option.

Not bad man realised I invested way too much time here so had a break. Have a good GW? I did okay but disappointed in a couple picks

The answer to all transfer questions is: Save, unless you have Allisson or Moura in your team.

Allisson is a 100% transfer out candidate for either Ederson or Adrian.
Moura is a 50:50 case for Martial, and really a long term call mixed with some team value consideration.
Im struggling to think of any other cases where its even a viable question.

Really hope Martial flops this week

If there is any justice in the world, then this week:

              - Martial blanks
              - United concede 4
              - Moura, Siggy, Perez, King & Jota score
              - Origi is benched

                  - Bernardo RW goal
                  - Deeney penalty
                  - Deulofeu wizardry brace
                  - TAA rest

Trossard - I think I'm saving with him.

Alisson - yes, no one can anticipate an injury to their player.

Moura - no; the answer is, "What the hell did you get him for if you want to get rid after one game!?"

He got an assist too. Honestly if people were expecting a hattrick or something they should have done their research, he blanked a lot in easy home games

i was on Moura/KWP for awhile, and switched to Martial/Digne in the final week.
basically planning a transfer wasnt a good idea so went for longer term picks

For most of pre-season I thought it was impossible to fit all 3 of Salah, Sterling and Kane in a tea.

However I somehow stumbled into having them all to begin with in a team I didn’t think was unbalanced and liked the look of it.

I get the argument that the big hitters ‘won’t do it every week’ but neither will the players that anyone else has and yes you spend more money on the likes of Kane etc, but thats surely because they are MORE LIKELY to do it every week anyway?

            Thoughts?

I started with an SSK structure (but with Auba) so I could assess which one wasn't pulling their weight in terms of value and then downgrade to two premiums rather than go the other way.

Well that’s the benefit of that strategy too is that it’s easy to get off one if they aren’t performing, very hard to get on one the other way around

Well played! Just seen a few posts saying that it won’t work every week because they won’t do it every week, I just don’t get that because with funds spread elsewhere those players aren’t going to do it every week either!
