Barnes brace sinks Saints as Pope returns to Fantasy form

Burnley 3-0 Southampton

Goals: Ashley Barnes x2 (£6.5m), Johan Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m)

Assists: Erik Pieters x2 (£4.5m)

Bonus Points: Barnes x3, Pieters x2, Nick Pope x1 (£4.5m), Gudmundsson x1

Ashley Barnes (£6.5m) did his best to blow Burnley’s pre-season trends out of the water in a 3-0 win over Southampton on Saturday.

The forward scored twice against the Saints after a campaign of summer friendlies in which he did not find the net once.

Barnes also played fewer minutes in those games than colleagues Chris Wood (£6.5m) and Jay Rodriguez (£6.0m) but still started alongside the New Zealand international at Turf Moor.

His two forward colleagues combined for 15 goals in pre-season but it was Barnes who showed the clinical edge in Gameweek 1.

Barnes scored a brace in Burnley’s 3-0 win over Southampton

However, in truth, the game was closer than the scoreline suggested.

Southampton had chances in the early stages with new signing Che Adams (£6.0m) and Nathan Redmond (£6.5m) hooking wide and stinging the palms of Nick Pope (£4.5m) respectively.

In fact, Burnley did not pose much of a threat in the first half other than a Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m) drive from the edge of the box that clipped the post. It was only in a 12-minute second-half spell that they scored three goals.

“It was a tight game and there wasn’t much in it, but I was so pleased with our mentality to stick at it. We started asking more questions in the second half and lifted the tempo and without putting them on the back foot we suddenly made like awkward.” – Sean Dyche

Barnes first capitalised on a Jannik Vestergaard (£5.0m) slip to connect with an Erik Pieters (£4.5m) clearance, drilling under Angus Gunn (£4.5m).

Minutes later, the former Plymouth Argyle striker was on hand again to double Burnley’s lead. This time there was more intention on Pieters’ ball into the box, an incredible cross to the back post where Barnes poked home.

“I have great admiration for him. This pre-season he didn’t score a goal and he looked hungry for it. The first goal was a fantastic touch and finish, it was great skill. His second finish was sublime, it’s a brilliant ball by Erik Pieters, but when centre-forwards finish like that it looks easy. It’s not easy when the ball is coming over your shoulder like that.” – Sean Dyche

It is worth highlighting the role that Pieters played in this win, as his 14-point score in Gameweek 1 was bettered only by Raheem Sterling‘s (£12.0m) 20-point haul.

Not only did the former Stoke man get two assists, but he also tacked on a clean sheet and two bonus points.

Pieters secured a great Gameweek 1 score but his place in the Burnley team could be short-lived

However, it would probably unwise to jump straight into including Pieters in our squads, for several reasons.

Firstly, while his cross for Barnes’ second goal was excellent, the assist for the first was nothing more than a clearance, that the striker was able to latch onto because of Vestergaard’s mistake.

Furthermore, it does seem likely that Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) will be the first choice left-back for Burnley this season.

The former Leeds United defender missed a portion of pre-season with an injury but still started two of the last three matches of the summer, while Pieters featured from the beginning only once in that run.

According to Burnley’s official website, Taylor was only omitted from the matchday squad for the Southampton clash “during a fast-track to get him up to match fitness.”

In our Team News content, we did think that Taylor would be a doubt to start this Gameweek 1 as he played in a reserve team game midweek a few days beforehand.

Fantasy managers looking at the Burnley defence will have to keep an eye on the left-back situation and Dyche’s next press conference ahead of Gameweek 2.

The third Clarets goal on Saturday came from Gudmundsson’s determination as he dispossessed Ryan Bertrand (£4.5m), bore down on goal from the right flank and curled an effort into the far corner of Gunn’s net.

Nick Pope played his first Premier League match since the 2017/18 campaign on Saturday

Meanwhile, it was rewarding for Fantasy managers to see goalkeeper Pope make his first Premier League appearance since the 2017/18 season on Saturday.

The Burnley shot-stopper picked up where he left off as a Fantasy asset too, keeping a clean sheet, making three saves and claiming one bonus point.

As per usual, the Clarets made life very comfortable for their goalkeeper, largely limiting Southampton to efforts from range, enabling Pope to make enough saves for that additional point.

It will be interesting to see how this tactic affects Arsenal in Gameweek 2, given how much of the Gunners’ play takes place inside the penalty box.

“Popey didn’t have a lot of do, which was also pleasing.” – Sean Dyche

“The lads have shielded me well in tough conditions, it was difficult to get going in a sense. The lads looked after me really well and I helped them out when I could. I feel better than before; I don’t think about it when I wake up in the morning. It’s in the past now, so I’m glad to get it behind me.” – Nick Pope

Meanwhile, despite the result probably being an unfair reflection of the match, concerns about Southampton’s defence under Ralph Hasenhüttl continue.

Admittedly, there was poor defending specifically from Vestergaard for two of Burnley’s goals but it has been some time since the Saints offered reliable clean sheet potential.

This performance does not bode well for Southampton as they prepare to host Liverpool in Gameweek 2, although it could help Fantasy managers make their captaincy decision.

A 4.5m bench player who will get gametime up front for united?

If that’s your biggest issue currently then you have had an amazing start

I agree with OP, there are going to be so many 1 pointers. I'd prefer a nailed 4.5 def to be first on the bench/starting.

          a 4.5M def does not equal a 4.5M striker...

Youre gonna have to spend extra money to get a starting dtriker, to go on your bench that wont play

You need to find a 6m+ striker to outscore a 6m+ defender then - still agree with OP?

Yes - I had Greenwood in my team leading up to GW1, and wasn't comfortable for the reasons stated. I restructured my team partly because of that (and also because i could decide on decent 4th and 5th midfield spots - it never looked right)

He ok got on the pitch will sit 3rd on my bench most weeks so no stress he could even become a regular by xmas imagine what his price would be then i have better places on the pitch that play for all the extra wonga if he is an issue why put him in your team u must have known he may not play much i did and am sure most managers who put him in know this he is what is known as an ENABALER he enables us too put more money on better players

Burying a 4.5 forward on the bench who has a possibility of racking up a couple points in case of a substitution and allowing for a funds to be spent elsewhere seems to me like a gift.

Continuing a previous conversation with Smurf and The Dragon:

With City's yummy fixtures coming up, how would you guys try to get in KDB in with Salah and Sterling in the midfield? Are Zinchenko or Laporte interesting with their respective rotation risk and price point?

Is 5 at the back the answer? I sure hope not...

Oh for sure, that's the compromise, you'd probably have to roll with a couple of 6.5's up top, or reduce your spend at the back.

Yeah just a tough pill to swallow WHEN both Auba and Kane starts firing on all cylinders.

Currently have a four week transfer plan of Digne + Martial + Moura + Wilson --> Coleman + KDB + McGinn + Rashford

            McGinn's fixtures are unreal

Siggy would make a great 3rd S, Son would be even better (covers the 9.5 slot nicely, so Pepe/KdB become options).

Depends on your strategy coming in and gow your team is built. It also depends on early season trends. I think it's too early to decided. If I nail the early season value picks with free trades then I like to try and hold to set up for the Holiday run. Otherwise it'll be earlier. No right way. To each his own.

I know it’s been 1 week lol but is 3 premiums the way to go this season? At every stage of the season 3 of Liverpool, City, Spurs and Arsenal have amazing fixtures for an extended period of time. GW1 showed the consistency (and explosiveness in most cases) of these assets making them worth the price (Sterling, Kane, Salah, Auba). With the overpricing and *underperforming so far* of the mid price (Vardy, Wilson, Siggy etc) assets would it be better to seek value in 3 premiums and a handful of the good cheapies such as Buendia, Barnes, Perez, Martial? Or is 2 premiums and stick to the *mostly* uncaptainable mid price options as a reliable source of points and ignore the explosiveness? Thoughts x

Personally started with three to be sure I had a strong starting 11, and i planned to keep two of them. Just going to wait and see for the next few game weeks and take it from there. The best value options should hopefully start showing their tail feathers soon.

I did the same and am finding it very easy to fit in 3 premiums with a really nice team. It’s just about getting those cheapies right but many have a really nice run of fixtures at various stages in the season. Thinking of sticking with it after 1st WC. Gonna bin Auba after captaining this week tho to get Haller/Chelsea striker and Son

It isn't that straightforward, IMO. At times, and to capitalise on certain fixture runs, owning 3 premiums may be the way to go.

highest value players in a team, good fixtures or otherwise, arent premiums. we have 100m to spend so having 1/2 is efficient and we have captaincy to consider. 3 is never going to be worth it

I understand the whole value thing, but in reality, I bet many of the top players in the world will, at times, hold three of Salah, Sterling, Mane, Aguero, Aubameyang and Kane this season.

Well of course there’s no way of telling now but when prices first came out I thought ew about a few certain players in that 7-9.5m bracket. I’d rather drop them down to a 6.5 and use the cash to turn it into an exciting premium. It’s only been 1 game I get I am just getting too excited about new ideas. Saw someone mention this strategy the other day as they do it every year and said it usually goes well

The one problem with 3 premiums is that your team is pretty much set as there's no wiggle room. I went with 3 premiums and the only transfer I can find is between two 4.5m defenders. You basically need two or more transfers to make any bigger changes to your team.

Only mad if you are planning some wider scale transfers in the future? Your FT can help you gain 0.5 or 1.0 to fund your GW4 dream moves. But I am looking at Moura right now and desperately wanting to transfer him to Martial. Bit kneejerky but just feel that Spurs are destined to get a 1-1 here.

If you discount injuries and fitness related issues, Son
his PPG has historically always been much higher

Could depend on who is taking pens for Utd. Otherwise I would personally go for A.

Worth keeping hold of Pulisic or draw it up as a failed punt and replace him?

Not even starting has put me off though, thought he'd step right into Hazards role

Should play regularly from gw3. Was pitted against AWB, who even kept city and hazard quite last year. Beast of a player.

Give him some time, would come good, but Chelsea is in transition, with no set striker. I think he will be good bet in second half of the season, not right now

Captain Aubam, Salah or Sterling... On Aubam atm, don't think they'll be too much in it. Hmmm

              Auba, but it's fine margins.

Salah for me, Southampton are a future relegated team imo.

            Are people underestimating Mané ?

If Kane and Sterling prove themselves as good captaincy options, Salah could be too expensive to hold on to him this season.

Mané could be an excellent alternative, to offer us the possibility to go Kane+Sterling+Mané.

Have you looked at the difference between salah and manes prices this season?

Mané looked damned hungry for goals when he came on didn't he? It's going to be an interesting season watching those two fight it out for the golden boot again.

I agree. But Salah on penos/setpieces is key.

              This is easy enough:

              4.5m
              TAA Zinch 4.5m 4.5m
              Salah Sterling Pepe 5.5m
              6.5m Kane

Overpriced for me. Mane more expensive than Auba + Kane. I'd rather have the later and extra moneys.

So, decided to play an early wildcard, which I may regret, but not having key players like Sterling or any Mancity attack I decided to pull the trigger. Plus I thought I'd gain some early momentum as I have been early WC player.

            Thoughts on this lot?

            Heaton (Button)
            VVD Digne Montoya (Rico Lundstram)
            Salah Sterling Siggurdson McGinn (Dendock)
            Kane Pukki King

            0.0 INB

            Cheers!
