Scoutcast Episode 297 – Patience

The Scoutcast crew are reluctant to make drastic changes for Gameweek 2 after spending most of the summer carefully constructing their Fantasy Premier League squads for the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

This week’s crew of Joe, Az, Luke and guest Holly (aka @FFCommunity_) are hoping that patience proves a virtue as they attempt to stick by their chosen players.

But with all three promoted sides impressing in Gameweek 1, including Norwich’s talismanic striker Teemu Pukki, they are already hatching plans for change in the weeks ahead.

What to do with Tottenham’s Harry Kane, Manchester United’s Anthony Martial and the Premier League’s newest faces are among the issues covered.

Our podcast quartet also find time to ponder when may be the best time to wave goodbye to a player.

The next month’s best differential and clean sheet prospects are also considered as they take in the key events from the first Gameweek of the season and look ahead to what may be a difficult second round of top flight action.

I'd be really surprised if David Silva misses this one, with Kompany gone he needs his leaders on the pitch.

It seems like a lot of people here do not understand basics on playing games of statistics and probabilities: People talk as if the coming weeks will show what was the right decisions. That is not true, what is the right decision to do right now does not depend on what in hindsight actually happened, but what the probabilities/expected values of return are right now.

For instance, for a player like Martial I would estimate what will happen over the next 8 gameweeks something like:

A (10%) Martial scores a lot, rises a lot and is almost essential to have
B (30%) Martial scores as much as the best players in his pricerange and is a very good player to have
C (30%) Martial scores every now and then, but worse than the best similarly priced players
D (20%) Martial doesn't score much at all and is definitively a waste of money compared to similarly priced players
E (10%) Martial gets injured/red card/other reason so he needs to be sold

Similarly you could make a list for Rashford and then compare who gives highest expected value. If I, for the sake of the argument, think that Martial is the better choice, then this claim is not disproved even if Rashford ends up scoring double the points of Martial. Of course, it might be true that I wrongly estimated the probabilies, and that Rashford was actually the better pick. However, it might just as well be that luck wasn't on my side. We also know very well that humans are psychologically inclined to come up with ad hoc explanations which justify why something happend, after the fact. So even when I was just unlucky, my brain will naturally come up with wrong explanations for why I should have known that Rashford was the better pick. In many cases, my choice of Martial (assuming I am a good fpl player) was probably correct in the first place.

On here it seems like a lot of people would go "Ha! I knew that would happen, I am so good." if A happens, and you picked Martial. But that is obviously not true, everyone knows it is a possibility, but it is still lucky that it goes that well. Similarly a lot of people seem to think that when D or E happens, they obviously should have known in advance that would happen and where stupid to pick the player. One cannot divide the cases like that, every player has a risk and a reward, and in any single case there is a lot of luck involved, both the positives and negatives.

It’s all the intangibles. Maybe they glean more information from watching games that the average player doesn’t?

They’re also very good at dismissing the noise - the bandwagons they don’t see as sustainable. The good players start with very similar teams which generally speaking, reduces risk of being left behind while giving them the flexibility to move players in at certain price points. They have a plan.

Well Jay Egghead did say he watches games and follows the players moves from beginning to end which I guess you can't begrudge him if he goes to that much effort

Dismissing the noise I 100% agree which also ties in with patience .

I guess a lot comes down to how much time they have on their hands .Can imagine most of these are intense 24/7

More skill in poker that FPL though. Reading players and math is a skill, especially under pressure.

I'm saying, if you go all in with a 50/50 chance of winning - it's like someone saying they made a good play when they win and a bad one when they lose. But it was a 50/50 chance regardless

fpl is simpler but involves similar fundamentals (ev calcs, broad philosophical understanding of how probability works and how that affects ur decision making). “reading players” in poker not really important.

          1. Pumpkinhead - I'm ITK …
            • 14 Years
            4 years, 8 months ago

Yer I don't see it as skill related personally in any sense. I just think the more patient people prevail. I mean sure you can read all the stats you want and put the captaincy on a midfielder who then bags an hatrick but what was skillful about it ? Unless reading from a screen is skill. I think you need a underestimated massive amount of luck but you can help yourself by setting out price points and a good format. Guess it's all subjective really but we can all beat anyone in fpl.

    9. Pumpkinhead - I'm ITK …
      • 14 Years

      Spot on.

    10. EMBOLOFAN
      • 5 Years
      4 years, 8 months ago

agree with the general premise but we have (reasonably) statistically significant data on most players and while accepting variance is part of the process your breakdown of martial is not the best example

      1. Turambar
        • 6 Years
        4 years, 8 months ago

Sure, my example is of course not particularly precise, or even the correct way of calculating, it was just meant as an example to illustrate the other points. But there are lots of reasons why going only by the actual statistical data is not sufficient: We do not have enough of data on Martial in post-Lukaku United (where he will play much more in a different position) and so on, so part of the probability estimates will be qualitative in addition to the obvious quantitative parts.

7 nights stay in a UK city of your choice and a pair of VIP tickets to a Premier League game of your choice. Not sure if the city has to be close to the game you choose.

Everyone one at work whispering at me, over and over and over again.
As I was too hard of hearing to manage last couple of nights I elected to do some food running instead.
The constant “Rupe, didn’t you hear the bell?” I’d run to grab it and low and behold, no food. Bar stewards! Literally

Bilva is a conundrum. I think the right advice is to stick and I think he plays this week, but Spurs are not a pushover and if he does not score his price will plummet.

In that case, I would want to transfer to a cheaper mid. If he can make it to the weekend without a price drop, then no problem but if he drops before the weekend and the prediction above bears out, then my potential GW2 and GW3 moves will be limited (I am thinking of shifting to Zaha and need the full £1M for investment elsewhere).

I don't believe in managing to TV but in this case the conservative move would be to shift to Zaha , especially given uncertainty over price changes and conserve the full £1 for flexibility to make early season adjustments.

            3 FPL Strategies

            The Turtle Pension Fund Strategy
FPL has a large number of well-established influencers. They're players with excellent finishing places over several years. Looking at the consistency of their historical data, we can reasonably expect these players will continue posting excellent overall scores. As a result, they are quite rightly given a high degree of credibility within the FPL community. When these players say they are looking at or avoiding individual players, seasoned FPL players should carefully consider their recommendations.

Think of it like this; you have a meeting with your financial advisor (FPL influencers) regarding your pension (total points scored). You state that you would like a portfolio (your 15 players) which will deliver consistent returns (the template team) against the market (casuals & other players).

This strategy suits the majority of players as they're effectively guaranteeing themselves a solid start.

            The Hare Pension Fund Strategy
Similar to Turtle strategy in that it's mostly made up of template players. However, in early game weeks, we have an opportunity to be more aggressive with our investments (transfers) as the overall risk to our long term future isn't excessive. We could look at combining our FTSE 100 (Salah, Kane, etc.) and FTSE 250s (De Bruyne, Son, etc.) with more AIM (Siggy, Zaha, etc.) and for the aggressive investor, startups (Pukki, Lundstram etc.). From time to time, we can expect to see a unicorn such as Uber appear (AWB last season).

As the start of the season is somewhat more unpredictable than latter parts of the season, punting on players like Pukki could prove fruitful. He's a relatively safe option as he's nailed on to play. Should it go brilliantly well, other investors will flock to this stock and mitigate the long term risk of your holding. Should it all go wrong, alternatives such as King & Jota probably won't have racked up enormous scores.

This strategy suits the slightly more risk-tolerant who are happy to hold 1 or 2 early punts with limited up/downside.

Both pension fund strategies result in the player ending up with a template team (within a couple of minor transfers), which will sit at a relatively steady rank until the last game weeks when differential picks start to become more frequent.

            Maverick Strategy
This strategy flies in the face of the majority of experts and is unlikely to pick a remotely template team. They'll most likely lack one of Salah or Sterling. If they've decided to go for a second big hitter, we're likely to see Kane or Auba in their sides.

The aggressive approach means the player needs to be highly tolerant to risk. As we saw last weekend, not having both Salah & Sterling comes with a tremendous downside. Not all is lost for this type of strategy. They're likely to have increased flexibility in their squads and moving to say Martial or Rashford may be significantly more manageable for them. Keep an eye on their knees.

Ultimately, the maverick strategy is the most challenging as the FPL influencers are unlikely to be talking about moves similar to the ones the maverick needs to make. They'll need to do a lot of their own research and be self-critical of their thought process, not an easy thing to do. Perhaps the most challenging part of this strategy will be the up and down nature of their rank. When a template big hitter does well, this strategy is particularly vulnerable and vice versa.

                  5. Man Utd
                  6. Chelsea
                  7. Everton
                  8. West Ham
                  9. Wolves
                  10. Leicester City
                  11. Watford
                  12. Crystal Palace
                  13. Bournemouth
                  14. Newcastle

think Palace and Newcastle will be way lower than that.

But most of them look spot on tbh

I wouldn't be surprised if Newcastle come close to relegation especially now that Rafa is gone but they did splash the cash on a new striker even if they overpaid

Palace kept Saha, however disgruntled he will still want to continue to show his assets to future suitors. If he left they would be much lower.

Anyway just my wonderful pundit analysis 🙂

Here's what I prepared just before the season kicked off

                      1 Manchester City
                      2 Liverpool
                      3 Tottenham
                      4 Arsenal
                      5 Manchester United
                      6 Chelsea
                      7 Wolves
                      8 Everton
                      9 Leicester
                      10 West Ham
                      11 Burnley
                      12 Aston Villa
                      13 Bournemouth
                      14 Norwich
                      15 Brighton
                      16 Southampton
                      17 Sheffield United
                      18 Watford
                      19 Crystal Palace

Probably, but they all look like well-run outfits.
Newcastle are, er, not. Palace appear to be regressing and I didn't think Watford had strengthened over the break.

                            Ha

We'll see about Palace. It could go tits up but short of signing a forward I don't think Palace are quite that badly off. I'm not especially convinced losing AWB will have that much effect and the defence will still be right up there. Same squad but with better midfield options as last time.

Progressed last season while not spending anything much and a similar sort of finish this time is perfectly feasible - within a six pointer away win at Goodison of finishing ahead Everton is par for the last 2 seasons.

                            Equation changes if Zaha goes

Their early fixtures ain't great and they always start very slowly. Can see them hanging in there up to January, but then Zaha's off and the wheels come off. Not sure at which point Woy takes early late retirement.

Early fixtures include all 3 promoted teams in the next 6 and that should say a fair bit about how it will go. But as you say Palace regularly start slowly.

The Everton match was pretty encouraging given that Pickford was arguably the man of the match and Palace were down both first choice CBs and Zaha barely played.

Zaha is of course a factor but again its deeply unlikely imo he'll be off then - someone will need to pay 100 mill in the winter window. Also worth bearing in mind that Palace are very likely to buy/loan a forward then either way. Palace may start slowly but they invariably end with well.

Anyone else noticed that you can no longer see the number of GW transfers made by your Mini League opponents on the FPL site on their points/team page this season?...That's a tricky little change. Usually I check this to see if someone has made a change/taken a hit or kept their FT on a given GW....now we're all completely in the dark...

Surely you should just be focusing on maximising your own points and not worrying about what your opponents are doing at this point of the season? This sort of thing might come into play with 5 games left to go if you're trying to protect a lead.
