How newly-promoted players performed in Gameweek 1

A number of newly-promoted players caught our attention in the opening weekend of Fantasy Premier League action.

Norwich City were thrashed 4-1 at Liverpool but still caused their illustrious hosts plenty of problems.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa proved a stiff test for Spurs on Saturday evening while Sheffield United were the first of last season’s promoted clubs to earn a point in 2019/20.

We’ve gone over the numbers to see which of their players could provide some value this season.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 campaign can access it in full.

Nobody has great fixtures, probably Zouma at 5. Maitland-Niles not great fixtures to play every week, same for Walker-Peters and they both have an expiry date

I’m not 100% to be honest, I think he showed enough last season to be first choice though. Worst case you swap to Christensen, I’d be shocked if they rotated in the league so once you have the right one you are sorted

I was planning a -4 next week with a free transfer, one would have included king —-> Pukki, in my history I had pukki in one draft just for Newcastle at home, so I’ve done the transfer and it feels pretty good..

Keep Ings or transfer out? If so who (have King and Murray). Thinking perhaps Wesley or Calvert-Lewin given upcoming fixtures. Stick or twist?

There is just nothing at that price point as a striker that appeals to me - you need to get to 6.5m+

Personally I would save and then use 2 FT next week to change formation to 2 up front but hard to say without seeing whole team

Too much rotation risk. And liable to drop in price if he does go up when the kneejerkers do what kneejerkers do.

Only had 4m for 3rd Sub and Hanley came out the hat - based on preseason minutes and captaincy.

Hanley o.g, VVD, Salah, Origi scoring first four goals of the season. Pukki ruined my pattern

Big thumbs up to the guys and girls in fpl towers for not showing team value and amount of transfers made by other managers.

This move has made the game a lot fairer and is a step in the right direction for fpl.

Personalty i couldn't give a fiddlers what any other manager are doing but some were basically spying on opponents even using software to predict what others were doing which is just wrong.

Best thing they have changed in years.

I actually feel sorry for some of the top managers out there who have their team and moves copied by lesser men and this chance should serve to negate that somewhat.

Ever since I started I've never ever used another site. The time I've spent with a pen and paper working out my rivals move and even blocking them off is bordering sad admittedly. Even so it isn't cheating and it's a big part of my game. Really annoying this change. There is so much more they can do to improve the game but they broken it even more

Blocking rivals due to them making a move before you is hardly a skill. The skill will be blocking them without knowing their transfers. It got to the stage when managers made last minute transfers losing team value to try and hide their moves. I understand that you worked it out manually but many didn't.

No I know it's not a skill..There isn't much that is a skill in fpl..maybe patience and having an eye for a player but that also involves a lot time and effort watching the games and fair play to any one who plays that way.

I get that this info has been made too easily available by other sites and that's what killed it. You know yourself back in the day most people would have never even considered this as an option so once again people who did were rewarded for the time they put in. Belive me it was boring as hell and I can't belive I'm publically admitting to being so sad 😆

Stats are available to most but what about people who can't afford it? They are now at a disadvatage. When you get players who put no time into this game ending up with the same team as one who put effort in then you know the game is broken

Plenty of free places for stats including twitter.
Plenty of people copying the better players and using sites for their transfers, that's when the game is broken.
Now the copying part is gone, people are already panicking about their rivals. All you saw from GW30 onwards was "my rival made this transfer, what should I do"?

I'm same. I see following stats as a form of cheating and always have. Simply because it's OPTA's work you are using and not your own but it's subjective. I'm more impressed with players who do well by watching the games. I think Jay Egghead is easily the best player in the game ( if not a little annoying with his Patreon rubbish) just as he analyses player movements throughout. Not sure about Ville as he isn't real 😆

What I'm saying though if using stats is considered fair then so Should being able to tactically work out others transfers. It's sites like ff fix who now do this for the casuals ( more spoon feeding) that's put an end to it. Either that or somone with influence decided it wasn't in their intrest and advised FPL to stop it.

Stats are available to all one way or another.
Much different to FPL game play where the team value, money in bank and gameweek transfers showing has been a flaw for many seasons.

No. Stats only tell you what happened in the last. They don’t predict the future and they can be interpreted so many ways. Which stats over what period is very much subjective and no one is a master though those who out the work in her better results.

The alternative is gut feel which isn’t frankly challenging. At least trying to assess which stats are most useful and which data sets to use coupled with a good dose of eye test and experience gives you a framework to challenge your self and see progress.

For many mastering the art of working out the best statists to base decisions on is the fun in fpl.

The stats thing is just part of the game and i think all the opta stats should be made available to every manager in the fpl site to make it even more of a level playing field but these things cost money i guess.

I can appreciate how you used play your rivals the TV/transfer game but it is just not fair at the end of the day.It is like being able to see your opponents hand in poker before the flop comes out.

Lots of valid points being raised. Personally I quite like seeing both transfers/MITB purely to use to benchmark myself against rivals. So, couldn't they have adjusted the original format so that transfers and MITB are only updated during the first update in a new gameweek? This means we still see this info, but anonymity is retained during the week.

I assume league places are still determined by lowest number of transfers when points are tied? And we now have no way to validate that data?

I think that would be the best way to do it too and for all we know they might do it that way sometime in the future.

No changes the rules in regards to the lowest number of transfers used i think and we will just have to trust fpl for now or just count them in a players history page.

This is a great suggestion - it’s good to be able to compare your respective team values, but this could be done after the update.

Damn that was one of my favourite things. It was great for judging whether you could afford a points hit in your ML, and occasional mind games with your rivals when you worked out their transfer.

I didn't realise this copying went on to such an extent. I liked to see other people's team value but just out of curiosity, I generally play just to get as high a rank as I can and don't mind what 'rivals'

... what 'rivals' are doing. It was silly really to be able to see what others had in the bank!

Does this mean that there's no most valuable teams anymore?

This is what I believe to be the real reason for removing MITB, to stop the endless teams playing purely to top the value table.

Never looked what amount of transfers others have made, maybe because I didn't realize I could see that, but was aware of the TV.
Like it the way it is now.

I definitely agree that is a very good change.
Blocking your opponent’s is much more difficult now, which I think is a good thing.

I do think it is a shame if we can’t see opponents’ TV from last GW, as I always found it interesting to compare during the season.

I wish they’d take away the statistics page on fpl so no one knows player ownership percentages too. Make the game a lot less template.

I suspect that after the next results update we will all be able to see other team's TV and number of transfers, as they stood at the game-week deadline, on their Points page.

What we won't be able to see will be any changes to their TV and number of transfers that occurred during the current game-week - these should only be visible on the My Team page, which is only visible to the team's owner.

It looks as if teams' TVs and numbers of transfers as at the last deadline are not going to be shown on their Points pages after all.
The information is however available on their Gameweek history pages.
It will be a shame though if we can't even see their transfer history up to the last deadline except by comparing their teams for each game-week.

I'm losing him GW3 and going balls deep on Man City attack. Plan to wildcard him back in earlier than that though.

Aside from the Newcastle game, the Liverpool fixtures between GW3-GW6 don't scare. I'm sure he'll return but can't see any massive hauls.

TY. Agree. I can't see a GW where I'd captain him, between now and GW 13. Always Kane or Sterling. Also Mane is back and I have both TAA and Roberston.

hate to be that guy but been absolutely swamped with work this week and not given my team a second thought. so i'm going to be lazy and ask for help! gut is saying save FT as missed Moura to Martial.

            Ryan (Button)
            TAA VVD Digne (Kelly Diop)
Salah Sterling (C) Moura Barkley Maddison
            Wilson Wesley (Greenwood)

Barkley and Wesley will get another week after last weeks blanks, Moura now probably an extra 2. allows me to carry 2 FTs into GW3.

            thoughts?

Did you see the Newcastle game. Joelinton like a bad DCL apparently.

I’d consider benching for Dendoncker who will probably get 3.

To everyone saying you should not do a transfer in GW2 and to those who are not sure to do it or not

If a transfer which you are gonna do in future, say gw3 or gw4, why to wait till then , and instead to it now in GW2. If you are going to do it anyways next week why not this week only

If a transfer is needed for my team, I won't hesitate to use my transfer just for this reason. My team needs a transfer, so I will use it

Example let's assume you started with Jesus. You took him in team for short term for 2 gw and then were gonna move to rashford in gw3.

Isn't it one of the golden rules that if you are planning to do the transfer in future, why wait?

He might get injured, he might have tough opposition that game week, he might get red carded. Other players might emerge, you might need to do two transfers to get him in.

His form might have only been temporary. A key player in the team might get injured which might affect his output....

Anybody can get injured. That's not something which we can control.

If you are talking about suspension for gw3, AFTER scoring a brace in GW2, then if you hold the pre determined transfer you lose points, whereas if you do it in GW2, you get his points. In the end the game is about points

You asked people why wait so we said why. Your example is Rashford after one game where Man U were quite lucky. Would you not reassess him as a option if he blanked the next two? What if Aguero got injured which meant Jesus was now the main striker for the best team, would you not reassess then?

If it was someone like Salah in the middle of the season and you knew his form and you knew what he was capable of then I wouldn't wait because he can score against anyone. But if you're using the example of Rashford who I think went eight games without a goal at the end of last season and when we don't know how good or bad this Man U team is then yes I would want more information.

Because if you have 2 transfers you have more options on the transfers you make. Its unlikely a straight swap for a player of identical value is optimal

But - if there is a clear straight swap you know you will do in week 3 then doing it in week 2 is obviously fine as you say.

Sometimes making a transfer early can work out better than holding it off
You really need to know whether that player is right for your team and is going to do well though
It's kind of hard to judge that based off of just 1 GW

I think hits are seen as a rookie move on here, so the default answer is always 'hold'. They're not though, -4 hits can easily pay off, as long you're planning ahead and it's not just for one Gameweek.

I just see it as; 'Will players X&Y(-4) out perform players A&B over the next few GW's' - If the answer is yes, it's an easy hit.

You captain him this week and report back.

How’s evertons attack doing recently? Banging goals in for fun?
