Salah blanks as mediocre Liverpool concede again

Southampton 1-2 Liverpool

Goals: Danny Ings (£6.0m) | Sadio Mané (£11.5m), Roberto Firmino (£9.5m)

Assists: James Milner (£5.5m), Mané

Bonus Points: Mané x3, Firmino x2, Ings x1

Liverpool’s performance at Southampton on Saturday proved right those Fantasy Premier League managers who had concerns after the Super Cup final.

Having played 120 minutes in Istanbul midweek, the Reds probably did not deserve to take all three points from the Saints as they did not play to their usual high standards.

That led to Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) recording his first blank of the 2019/20 season at just the second hurdle.

The Egyptian was largely anonymous at the St. Mary’s Stadium, only finding himself presented with one decent chance on Saturday afternoon.

After making a trademark run cutting in from the right, Salah bore down on Angus Gunn‘s (£4.5m) goal, only for Southampton’s shot-stopper to deflect the effort away with his feet.

Salah was pulled off in the 78th minute at Southampton

Despite Klopp’s insistence that a 120-minute outing would not hamper Salah in Gameweek 2, Liverpool’s manager took the player off in the 78th minute and replaced him with Divock Origi (£5.6m).

Whether Fantasy managers should have any lasting concerns about Salah remains to be seen though.

It will not be every week that the Egyptian will be forced into extra-time midweek before a Saturday Premier League match.

Furthermore, with a home match against Arsenal next, a side who Liverpool scored five against at Anfield last season, it probably does not serve well to make any kneejerk reactions to Salah’s Gameweek 2 blank.

However, a 14-point haul for Sadio Mané (£11.5m) might just give some Fantasy managers itchy feet.

The former Southampton man returned to the starting line-up after his late return from African Cup of Nations action over the summer and got himself a goal and assist against his former employers.

The Senegalese international played only 103 minutes in the Super Cup final, which might have helped his cause, although in truth he wasn’t any more involved in the Liverpool action than Salah.

Yes, it was his excellent curled effort from range that gave Liverpool the lead, but he, like Salah, was also not at his best in a game largely dominated by Southampton.

Firmino scored what proved to be the winner for Liverpool but they were far from their best at Southampton

The same goes for Roberto Firmino (£9.5m), who outscored Salah in this game but did not necessarily offer much more than him across the course of the game.

We pointed out in Gameweek 1 that the Brazilian had registered more shots than Salah against Norwich, but it was the Egyptian who had more efforts on goal in this game.

Southampton asked plenty of questions of the European champions in the opening 45 minutes, Nathan Redmond (£6.5m) exploiting space on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s (£7.0m) side of the pitch.

The former Norwich midfielder saw a fierce effort go wide early on before Che Adams (£6.0m) dragged just beyond the far post from a corner.

Goalkeeper Adrian (£4.5m), who came through an ankle injury scare, was very much at the heart of Southampton’s attacking play for much of the game.

Early on, his clearance was charged down by James Ward-Prowse (£6.0m), setting the tone for the afternoon.

For long periods, the former West Ham man kept his side in the game, his most impressive save a point-blank stop from a Maya Yoshida (£4.5m) header after a Southampton corner.

Adrian was at the heart of the narrative for Liverpool’s win over Southampton

Adrian also made some good saves in the second half too, but ultimately it was exclusively his fault when Danny Ings (£6.0m) scored in the 83rd minute.

In almost a carbon copy of what happened with Ward-Prowse in the first half, his attempted clearance was charged down by the forward, who did not have to add a second touch to see the ball roll into an empty net.

“Yes (I have spoken to Adrian): ‘You finally arrived, welcome!’ Ali did the same. Obviously, it’s a goalie thing at Liverpool, no problem with that as long as we win the games. All good.” – Jurgen Klopp

The fact that Adrian allowed himself to get closed down on two occasions will not inspire confidence in owners of Liverpool defensive assets, especially those with a double-up in this department. That said, Klopp did insist that his team played him too many short passes today, in light of his recent injury. Maybe a return to full fitness for Gameweek 3 might help Adrian somewhat.

“Adrian had a swollen ankle and we played too many balls back to him in that period. I was happy with everything he did today, all the saves, all that stuff. The other players have to then feel more the responsibility for the build-up and cannot give all the balls back to him and hope the pain killers still help or whatever. I don’t think the goal was because of that, but a few other balls were. He is completely good with his feet. If you would have seen his ankle on Thursday after we left the plan then you would say even the pass before the [Southampton] goal was better than you would have expected! It is all fine.” – Jurgen Klopp

Owners of key Liverpool defensive assets were left disappointed on Saturday afternoon

Southampton burst into a late fight-back and probably should have levelled things up, Ings screwing wide from short-range shortly after busting Liverpool’s clean sheet.

Either way, after what Norwich achieved at Anfield in Gameweek 1, Southampton’s domination of this game will add further worry to those with Liverpool defenders.

Unfortunately for those invested in Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m), or a combination, Liverpool did not get enough going to soften the blow of losing the clean sheet with some attacking returns.

Those concerned about the double-up especially will perhaps not be too excited about Arsenal coming to Anfield in Gameweek 3.

Morning. As a fellow Finn I fear I've left the great Pukki down by not choosing him in my team. This has to change. This must change. This will change!
Also it seems I've missed out on a couple price rises so um...great. Salah to Mane it is. Also Robbo to AWB and Greenwood to Pukki for a hit. Gives a fairly all rounded team. What you think?
    Pope Heaton
    AWB TAA Digne Lundstram Montoya
    Sterling KDB Mane Perez Dendocker
    King Jota Pukki

No Spurs for their fixs, but you can't have them all. Opinions?

For next week I would look at Spurs players if you are going to make 2 transfers. Newcastle really are bad and Tottenham might put 5 past em...

I'm looking at how I can bring Son in. Reckon he will be pumped for that game.

I've always liked Son, it the few times I've brought him in early he has done nothing. When I haven't, he's exploded. Furiating. In my team it would mean Salah, Sterling or most probably KDB out for him and I don't like that. KDB looks amazing, Raheem stays and Salah can become Mane but none else.

why are people worried about pukkis upcoming fixtures? he scored against liverpool, chelsea arent exactly good at the back, west ham are awful defensively, (then city I agree tough), but after this aload of easy games. could see him scorin/getting chances in 6 out of his next 7. hes a class finisher

I agree. Having watched most of his matches last season and that seasons goals numerous times, I find it silly I didn't trust him from the go. His movement away from the defender is great, keeps the ball low and very often hits the target or forced a save. Class act that will do well this season with norwich' style of attacking play.

Liverpool need to drop their defensive line back about 5 yards. Better teams than Norwich and Southampton will score against them if they persist. Chelsea even gave them a good match mid-week and Chelsea were tonked by Man Utd.

Have AWB already and not sold on Ota.

        Pope(Button)
        TAA VVD AWB Digne (Rico)
        KDB Salah Sterling Perez (Dendoncker)

With Arsenal up next maybe downgrade one of TAA / VVD for a 4.5m defender (Dunk?) to allow an upgrade to Greenwood, King, Perez or Dendoncker.

Do people think he's shaken off his "only performs at Anfield" tendencies from last season?

Liverpool were terrible both end of the pitch, especially first half. Salah was nowhere to be found. Liverpool were lucky to win the game tbh

First half we should of been down by 1/2-0 Mane's class finish was definitely against the run of play second half we were more dominant, Salah will rest up and hopefully have his firing boots on against Arsenal next Saturday he's played 190 minutes in 3 days can give him the benefit of the doubt for yesterday's performance but can see why people want Mane in he's our best player in the squad personally to me

Mane is the best player on the pitch, but Liverpool controlling of the game and mistakes from the defense, made Liverpool extremely shaky overall. It was similar to the Chelsea game

Agreed our performances definitely don't match the results as of yet but it's important to win vital games like that early on I sound biasist but there's major rustiness at this current time with the squad regrouping the players at different times back together in pre season never happened and we got the trio back late think as the season goes on performances will get better.

Wilson to pukki done.. probably made a mistake but could catch some important TV at least. When Norwich score you get that feeling pukki is going to be the one. Them the players you want

Ye I think it’s fine now (I was a big advocate of not doing that move for GW2)

As you say he is going to go up 0.3 this week and he can easily be moved on if this first 2 weeks have been an ‘extreme’

Exactly. If Rashford scores Monday I can see Wilson stock plummeting and a probably drop. Don't want to lose vslue at this stage

Watched the Norwich game yesterday to have a second look at him. He just looks right. His positioning, runs and even his link up play.

This should be a hot topic really - Liverpool defence.

Is double Liverpool defence now too much risk / cost with Adrian in goal or have they just been unlucky? That error for the saints goal was ridiculous.

With so many options in midfield now at 7.5+ (salah, mane, Sterling, KDB, son, martial) is it time to take cash out of defence to fund it? Or is this just a blip and 2 games too small a sample size?

I'm thinking of dropping Robbo for Dunk to bring Mane in for Moura so I'm certainly on the same lines

Not against an early wc so nice insurance policy

Is it just me or do the prices seem more volatile this year? E.g Pukki rising twice in consecutive days, especially early on when a lot of Wildcards will be being played.

Nah. I think Auba rose 0.6 in 7-8 days last season

Really? Thought you could only rise 0.3 in a gameweek.

I actually have been thinking they are less volatile! I’m sure my TV was like 101 after 2 weeks last year. Currently at 100.2

I thought the Wildcard use slows it down, but players changing twice in 2 days seems rare

Not early season when there's 5M active players.

Or when almighty bandwagons like the Pukki express leave the station

Prices are moving slower IMO, allowing me to be more patient at the start of the season.

Pukki is understandle, he's starting from 2.5% ownership in GW1, will probably be 20%+ ownership by next week!

Only need 10% for a price rise as well. I can easily see him triple rising this GW and if he gets any return against Chelsea he could be up 0.6 in no time!

If Digne is fit, is doubling up Eve defence with Mina worth it? Downgrading 1 of Pool boys.

Digne is an excellent option, then you have KDB, Mane, Sterling and maybe Pukki.

Norwich will create chances. They play Chelsea at home, which should help and West Ham shouldn't off put anyone. City away isn't good.
