Salah blanks as mediocre Liverpool concede again

Southampton 1-2 Liverpool

Goals: Danny Ings (£6.0m) | Sadio Mané (£11.5m), Roberto Firmino (£9.5m)

Assists: James Milner (£5.5m), Mané

Bonus Points: Mané x3, Firmino x2, Ings x1

Liverpool’s performance at Southampton on Saturday proved right those Fantasy Premier League managers who had concerns after the Super Cup final.

Having played 120 minutes in Istanbul midweek, the Reds probably did not deserve to take all three points from the Saints as they did not play to their usual high standards.

That led to Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) recording his first blank of the 2019/20 season at just the second hurdle.

The Egyptian was largely anonymous at the St. Mary’s Stadium, only finding himself presented with one decent chance on Saturday afternoon.

After making a trademark run cutting in from the right, Salah bore down on Angus Gunn‘s (£4.5m) goal, only for Southampton’s shot-stopper to deflect the effort away with his feet.

Salah was pulled off in the 78th minute at Southampton

Despite Klopp’s insistence that a 120-minute outing would not hamper Salah in Gameweek 2, Liverpool’s manager took the player off in the 78th minute and replaced him with Divock Origi (£5.6m).

Whether Fantasy managers should have any lasting concerns about Salah remains to be seen though.

It will not be every week that the Egyptian will be forced into extra-time midweek before a Saturday Premier League match.

Furthermore, with a home match against Arsenal next, a side who Liverpool scored five against at Anfield last season, it probably does not serve well to make any kneejerk reactions to Salah’s Gameweek 2 blank.

However, a 14-point haul for Sadio Mané (£11.5m) might just give some Fantasy managers itchy feet.

The former Southampton man returned to the starting line-up after his late return from African Cup of Nations action over the summer and got himself a goal and assist against his former employers.

The Senegalese international played only 103 minutes in the Super Cup final, which might have helped his cause, although in truth he wasn’t any more involved in the Liverpool action than Salah.

Yes, it was his excellent curled effort from range that gave Liverpool the lead, but he, like Salah, was also not at his best in a game largely dominated by Southampton.

Firmino scored what proved to be the winner for Liverpool but they were far from their best at Southampton

The same goes for Roberto Firmino (£9.5m), who outscored Salah in this game but did not necessarily offer much more than him across the course of the game.

We pointed out in Gameweek 1 that the Brazilian had registered more shots than Salah against Norwich, but it was the Egyptian who had more efforts on goal in this game.

Southampton asked plenty of questions of the European champions in the opening 45 minutes, Nathan Redmond (£6.5m) exploiting space on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s (£7.0m) side of the pitch.

The former Norwich midfielder saw a fierce effort go wide early on before Che Adams (£6.0m) dragged just beyond the far post from a corner.

Goalkeeper Adrian (£4.5m), who came through an ankle injury scare, was very much at the heart of Southampton’s attacking play for much of the game.

Early on, his clearance was charged down by James Ward-Prowse (£6.0m), setting the tone for the afternoon.

For long periods, the former West Ham man kept his side in the game, his most impressive save a point-blank stop from a Maya Yoshida (£4.5m) header after a Southampton corner.

Adrian was at the heart of the narrative for Liverpool’s win over Southampton

Adrian also made some good saves in the second half too, but ultimately it was exclusively his fault when Danny Ings (£6.0m) scored in the 83rd minute.

In almost a carbon copy of what happened with Ward-Prowse in the first half, his attempted clearance was charged down by the forward, who did not have to add a second touch to see the ball roll into an empty net.

“Yes (I have spoken to Adrian): ‘You finally arrived, welcome!’ Ali did the same. Obviously, it’s a goalie thing at Liverpool, no problem with that as long as we win the games. All good.” – Jurgen Klopp

The fact that Adrian allowed himself to get closed down on two occasions will not inspire confidence in owners of Liverpool defensive assets, especially those with a double-up in this department. That said, Klopp did insist that his team played him too many short passes today, in light of his recent injury. Maybe a return to full fitness for Gameweek 3 might help Adrian somewhat.

“Adrian had a swollen ankle and we played too many balls back to him in that period. I was happy with everything he did today, all the saves, all that stuff. The other players have to then feel more the responsibility for the build-up and cannot give all the balls back to him and hope the pain killers still help or whatever. I don’t think the goal was because of that, but a few other balls were. He is completely good with his feet. If you would have seen his ankle on Thursday after we left the plan then you would say even the pass before the [Southampton] goal was better than you would have expected! It is all fine.” – Jurgen Klopp

Owners of key Liverpool defensive assets were left disappointed on Saturday afternoon

Southampton burst into a late fight-back and probably should have levelled things up, Ings screwing wide from short-range shortly after busting Liverpool’s clean sheet.

Either way, after what Norwich achieved at Anfield in Gameweek 1, Southampton’s domination of this game will add further worry to those with Liverpool defenders.

Unfortunately for those invested in Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m), or a combination, Liverpool did not get enough going to soften the blow of losing the clean sheet with some attacking returns.

Those concerned about the double-up especially will perhaps not be too excited about Arsenal coming to Anfield in Gameweek 3.

Salah Sterling Mane KDB (probably Son) Martial (maybe Pulisic) Zaha (probably Tielemans imo) Trossard (possibly Mount) Ceballos Cantwell Dendoncker - lots of decent midfield options this year at very different prices, hard to know how many 'premium' ones to have

      At least 3.

Salah, Sterling, KdB are pretty much nailed on in my team. That leaves the rest fighting it out. Might see if I can get Son for differential or Martial to be safer/if he still looks good.

Bit early to say this but I've got a Trossard-Cantwell rotation on going and not sure I want to change it, so that's 2 spaces used up - 3 premiums means no mid price one...maybe it is time to go expensive in defence instead 😀

It’s tempting but you could be down to 10 players some GWs with that defence. Lundstram/Kelly not nailed and Zinchenko is likely to be rotated oce CL starts. Zouma might not be nailed either once Rudiger returns.

I agree. Over the next few weeks it would probably be great. Long term it is in a bit of trouble but having points in the bag and some price rises could soften the blow if it needed a little tinkering a spread of funds.

In 2 games against poor opposition Liverpool have conceded 27 goal attempts. To put this in context, Man City have conceded just 8.

Are the warning signs there to ditch double Liverpool defence?

Or should we stay patient with record breaking defenders who scored over 200 points just last season?

If you count clean sheets as attacking returns, then Robertson got 33 attacking returns last season (21 clean sheets and 12 assists). No midfielder or forward can get you that.

People expect clean sheets too often.

If a mid table team gets 10 clean sheets in a season, it's considered exceptional, but that's roughly 1 in every 4 games, which is a lot of blanks for a cheap defender.

It is early doors and we don't just own them for their defensive abilities. 3 of their next 5 are against Burnley, Newcastle and Sheff Utd. If there are not at least 2 clean sheets (and limited attacking returns coupled with a poor xg then we have an answer). But until then no panic.

Not sure. It is more down to style of play. If they persist with the high line it could lead to trouble. They were 5 mins and a keeper error from a clean sheet. TAA and VVD picked up attacking returns the previous week. They have decent fixtures. It is fair to consider the switch if you have 2 and there are other options you can upgrade with the cash but I am in no hurry.

True. But as others have pointed out they don't just gain defensive returns. Ideally you want either a defensive or attacking return from them each week. Pukki has been brilliant and so has Digne. I would also trust Laporte (who I own) but I don't see many other players 7m and below who have done a lot more.

I attended the match yesterday (Saints season ticket holder) and the reason they’re conceding so many shots is pretty much Adrian. He was clearly still carrying an ankle injury yesterday, not kicking unless pushed to do so. VVD and Matip dropped back into the penalty box and stood next to him for every goal kick so he didn’t have to kick the ball. You could feel the nervousness in the Liverpool back 4 from the stands in terms of not trusting Adrian. I have the Liverpool double up (Robbo and TAA) and I’m holding for now. They were both brilliant going forward yesterday and both could’ve hauled.

Not just statistics, while you watch them they just did not look solid at all against Chelsea and Southampton.

It's all good talking about TAA & Robbo getting attacking returns (aimed more at the comments), but if they continue to concede then the attacking return only cancels out the CS points that other defenders would have had.

So, where's the incentive in paying a premium and getting the same amount of points a well chosen 4.5m could get, especially with the likes of Montoya playing OOP?

      1 or 4.
2 could also come good, but Haller is still a little bit untested, so would wait and see a little more of him first.

Did anybody catch the whole of the Everton match? Kean looked great on the highlights, but was this just because Watford were chasing and the match became stretched? Any Evertonians reckon he'll start the next match?

He is better in every aspect comparred to calvert-lewin. Only questions might be if he is fit enough to start.

What’s the most pressing issue in this team? I have 2 FTs and am actually considering a WC. Thinking it’s both AFCB players & Perez

    Ryan Button

    Robbo VVD Digne Zinchenko Lundstram

    Salah Sterling Martial Perez Dendoncker

    Wilson King Greenwood

Yes and no. Without him the defence was unprotected against United - he is needed in his traditional deep role. Frank hasn't found the balance yet; on Wed he played 3 DMs with no creativity and Kante doesn't fill the space there. I'd still monitor Chelsea to see how his tactics settle before moving for any.

Earliest WC ever, how to fit Martial or Rashford in If they looks good tomorrow.

      Pope
      VvD - Zinchenko - Digne - 4.5 (Lundstram)
KdB - Mane - Sterling - Son (Denco)
      Jota/Barnes - Pukki (4.5)

Decided to downgrade Salah to Mane because I won't captain either next coming weeks. Pukki have been really good for first two games, Norwich seems playing open game, so I think he can score against every team. KdB and Sterling best two assets from ManC and those fixtures coming looks have to have both.
Also, who looks best 4.5 defender?

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years
        4 years, 7 months ago

They're both relatively cheap so shouldn't be hard.
For Martial obv Son or Kev have to go. I'd lose Son and get Rash for Jota/Barnes.
Do you have the 0.1 required? If you're just bringing in Pukki I assume you do.

See the match today, but Leicester's Soyuncu could be your 4.5 man.

      Best moves here with 2ft?

      Heaton — Pope
Taa Vvd Digne Zincheko — Rico
Salah Sterling Martial Perez — Docker
      Wilson King — Greenwood

      A: Salah + Wilson >> Kdb + Kane (c)

B: Salah + Wilson + Greenwood >> Kdb/Son + Rashford(c) + Pukki and bench king. Plan to ship Perez out in gw5 to avoid benching headache

Bilva owner here. Glad he started and looked alright, on another day he could have had atleast a goal.
