Salah blanks as mediocre Liverpool concede again

Southampton 1-2 Liverpool

Goals: Danny Ings (£6.0m) | Sadio Mané (£11.5m), Roberto Firmino (£9.5m)

Assists: James Milner (£5.5m), Mané

Bonus Points: Mané x3, Firmino x2, Ings x1

Liverpool’s performance at Southampton on Saturday proved right those Fantasy Premier League managers who had concerns after the Super Cup final.

Having played 120 minutes in Istanbul midweek, the Reds probably did not deserve to take all three points from the Saints as they did not play to their usual high standards.

That led to Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) recording his first blank of the 2019/20 season at just the second hurdle.

The Egyptian was largely anonymous at the St. Mary’s Stadium, only finding himself presented with one decent chance on Saturday afternoon.

After making a trademark run cutting in from the right, Salah bore down on Angus Gunn‘s (£4.5m) goal, only for Southampton’s shot-stopper to deflect the effort away with his feet.

Salah was pulled off in the 78th minute at Southampton

Despite Klopp’s insistence that a 120-minute outing would not hamper Salah in Gameweek 2, Liverpool’s manager took the player off in the 78th minute and replaced him with Divock Origi (£5.6m).

Whether Fantasy managers should have any lasting concerns about Salah remains to be seen though.

It will not be every week that the Egyptian will be forced into extra-time midweek before a Saturday Premier League match.

Furthermore, with a home match against Arsenal next, a side who Liverpool scored five against at Anfield last season, it probably does not serve well to make any kneejerk reactions to Salah’s Gameweek 2 blank.

However, a 14-point haul for Sadio Mané (£11.5m) might just give some Fantasy managers itchy feet.

The former Southampton man returned to the starting line-up after his late return from African Cup of Nations action over the summer and got himself a goal and assist against his former employers.

The Senegalese international played only 103 minutes in the Super Cup final, which might have helped his cause, although in truth he wasn’t any more involved in the Liverpool action than Salah.

Yes, it was his excellent curled effort from range that gave Liverpool the lead, but he, like Salah, was also not at his best in a game largely dominated by Southampton.

Firmino scored what proved to be the winner for Liverpool but they were far from their best at Southampton

The same goes for Roberto Firmino (£9.5m), who outscored Salah in this game but did not necessarily offer much more than him across the course of the game.

We pointed out in Gameweek 1 that the Brazilian had registered more shots than Salah against Norwich, but it was the Egyptian who had more efforts on goal in this game.

Southampton asked plenty of questions of the European champions in the opening 45 minutes, Nathan Redmond (£6.5m) exploiting space on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s (£7.0m) side of the pitch.

The former Norwich midfielder saw a fierce effort go wide early on before Che Adams (£6.0m) dragged just beyond the far post from a corner.

Goalkeeper Adrian (£4.5m), who came through an ankle injury scare, was very much at the heart of Southampton’s attacking play for much of the game.

Early on, his clearance was charged down by James Ward-Prowse (£6.0m), setting the tone for the afternoon.

For long periods, the former West Ham man kept his side in the game, his most impressive save a point-blank stop from a Maya Yoshida (£4.5m) header after a Southampton corner.

Adrian was at the heart of the narrative for Liverpool’s win over Southampton

Adrian also made some good saves in the second half too, but ultimately it was exclusively his fault when Danny Ings (£6.0m) scored in the 83rd minute.

In almost a carbon copy of what happened with Ward-Prowse in the first half, his attempted clearance was charged down by the forward, who did not have to add a second touch to see the ball roll into an empty net.

“Yes (I have spoken to Adrian): ‘You finally arrived, welcome!’ Ali did the same. Obviously, it’s a goalie thing at Liverpool, no problem with that as long as we win the games. All good.” – Jurgen Klopp

The fact that Adrian allowed himself to get closed down on two occasions will not inspire confidence in owners of Liverpool defensive assets, especially those with a double-up in this department. That said, Klopp did insist that his team played him too many short passes today, in light of his recent injury. Maybe a return to full fitness for Gameweek 3 might help Adrian somewhat.

“Adrian had a swollen ankle and we played too many balls back to him in that period. I was happy with everything he did today, all the saves, all that stuff. The other players have to then feel more the responsibility for the build-up and cannot give all the balls back to him and hope the pain killers still help or whatever. I don’t think the goal was because of that, but a few other balls were. He is completely good with his feet. If you would have seen his ankle on Thursday after we left the plan then you would say even the pass before the [Southampton] goal was better than you would have expected! It is all fine.” – Jurgen Klopp

Owners of key Liverpool defensive assets were left disappointed on Saturday afternoon

Southampton burst into a late fight-back and probably should have levelled things up, Ings screwing wide from short-range shortly after busting Liverpool’s clean sheet.

Either way, after what Norwich achieved at Anfield in Gameweek 1, Southampton’s domination of this game will add further worry to those with Liverpool defenders.

Unfortunately for those invested in Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m), or a combination, Liverpool did not get enough going to soften the blow of losing the clean sheet with some attacking returns.

Those concerned about the double-up especially will perhaps not be too excited about Arsenal coming to Anfield in Gameweek 3.

Can someone tell me a good reason for selling Callum Wilson other than the fact he has one bad fixture (next) - people moan about missing his goals but then sell him after 2x 5 pointers.. me no understandy

He’s just played two promoted teams, and at a cost of 8m I expected a lot more. Tough defences next 3 aswell.

Can’t really see how you’d want to keep in all honesty...

Not sure Leicester is tough, but Everton have started well I'll give you that - but perhaps Sheff U and AV aren't as bad as everyone thinks (especially defensively)

      But Pukki...

That’s basically it. Risk of price drop I guess but I wouldn’t sell Wilson. King on the other hand is dead to me

Yeah not knocking it, he strikes the ball real well - think you could be underestimating the Sheff U and Villa defences? They both did well last year, albeit in the Champ

I don't think so. I have Lundstram, and would have got El Mohamady, but for his late arrival. My other cheap defender is Max Aarons. 🙂

Nice - I meant more that the expectations for Bournemouth were higher than they should have been and people think they played badly as a result (352 in the first game didn't help at all either)

our defence was rubbish in the champo last year tbh. That said was there on Staurday and Bou attack were very unconvincing - we should have beaten them. Harry Wilson looked the pick of the front 4.

I have Callum and King and will be losing one at least this week

This and their upcoming fixtures are exactly why I shipped him last night.

They are severely missing Brooks & I don't beleive Billing is helping things in the centre of the park either. They have adjusted.

I think he did well first 2 GWs, I don’t think 5 points per game is a bad score but I had only selected him for first 2 GWs anyway. Not a big fan of his upcoming fixtures, I think there are better options elsewhere to use those funds.

I just never bought him in the first place - was great at times for me for 6.0 last season, as was Fraze at 5.5

But their prices just too high for me this season

They’ll still get returns mind you

Weird to move KDB to Sterling, although I suppose captaincy is a big factor.

RE: Pukki, depends who you're shipping and if you could use a bench player instead.

The 0.1 rise this morning is significant, he probably won't rise 0.2 before next week, for a value gain (but who knows).

If Robinson blanks tonight, thoughts on going:

    - Wilson to Pukki
    - Robbo to Laporte
    - Robinson to Martial

Is this worth a -4 hit?

    Ryan / button
Vvd, Digne, Söyüncü / kelly, Pieters
    Sterling, KDB, mane, son, Ceballos
    Pukki, Barnes / greenwood.

It is close to what I had in mind before the start of the season with the exception of Barnes and the sub defenders. But that’s what they are for. Was / am still hoping maybe a Chelsea forward will be a good prospect to switch should Barnes flutter away.

It’s a good squad but I think it will end in tears personally

You have basically picked a team which would have scored you LOADS of points in GW1 and GW2. Unfortunately you don’t get to play those weeks again.

Cellabos - maybe a great pick but still to see how much gametime he gets - so for me a rotation risk.

Barnes - has scored in back to back games but that is very unsustainable - think there are better picks

Pukki - well he could be gold but he isn’t scoring a hattrick each week if that’s what you expect.

Yes Ceballos I’m not sure if he will play all the time but can be an easy change over.

As for the rest. Apart from Barnes and Pukki could well be certain on points. I don’t expect a haul every week but the team gives me some good options from certain teams

All those wildcardi g so early are mental, unless they got it seriously wrong. Yer old da’s follows a couple of simple rules:

    1. For established premier league players adopt the eye test and bin/buy on that basis
    2. For unproven options either in your team or not, adopt the ‘rule of four’...wait for at least 4 games before deciding on them cos anyone can get lucky in 1 or 2 games.

You’re guessing where this is headed. Siggy > KDB is inevitable for me this week. Pukki is a wait and see.

So many of these WC's here are dumping squads that were pretty decent in the first place. When Liverpool find their feet and Norwich their level, there will be regrets.

But too many people plan their teams for the next gameweek only and have no concept of strategy. Nevermind, they'll be ghost teams in a month and the stayers will shoot up the ranks.

Wildcarding early can be useful imo. Most use it between gwks 4-8, so going 2 weeks early is hardly disastrous. Agree that Pukki is a wait and see. I would only wildcard now to get triple City and Kane for the upcoming fixtures.

Yes, can. But a lot WC'd with good squads, just because Salah, TAA, Robbo have started a bit sluggish.

I agree, but most of us will have a decent team throughout the season. Few people who play seriously will ever have a wildcard worthy squad, and you will always be taking out players that can hurt you whenever you hit the button.

He already had 1 goal against European champions, and 3 goals on his 2nd ever PL match. He’s the main striker in a team which is basically all out attack and we don’t even know yet if he’s got pens as well. I’d be very concerned if I didn’t have him in my team.

‘Very concerned’ is clearly pushing it but I agree he has had an awesome start.

To play devils advocate - Counter argument would be:
GW1: Allison would have saved it if he hadn’t got injured
GW2: Newcastle were abysmal - Chelsea and city in the next 3 fixtures won’t defend like that.

You made good points there. Sometimes players just end up banging points week after week through the season though. I remember couple of seasons ago when Salah came back to Pool and started scoring goals, but I was sticking to more expensive Coutinho, refusing to believe Mo’s form would last. Same thing with Vardy and Leicester defence on their champion season and Ramsey & Yaya Toure few seasons before.

Agreed - bandwagons and getting them right is absolutely key

Getting in the wrong ones and missing the good ones can make or break a season.

I’m really torn on Pukki, whether to get him now or wait another 3 weeks to see more of him.

              Pros/
              - price is going to rocket
              - he is the main man for Norwich and they clearly want to play attacking football
              - his confidence will be sky high

              Cons
              - his current output is clearly unsustainable
              - his next few fixtures aren’t good

How many will he have scored come season end? 15 tops? 20 unrealistic for a Norwich striker. So 4 of those are gone, which means 11 more in the next 36 games, a ratio of a goal every 3.25 or so games. Not getting me excited that. The classic wait and see.

Not sure what to make of Norwich yet. They got tonked in a naive performance against the European champions, then won 3-0 against a de facto Championship side. Hoping I can afford to wait and see given the fixtures, but he's the player I'll fear every time a goal alert pops up, and it's generally a good idea to sign the players you fear!

Looking at all these wildcard teams....

All players who have scored points in weeks 1 and 2

Cheap as possible defences despite all pre season analysis indicating the value is in defence

It might be fun now and be good for a couple of weeks but it’s a long season - think long term before you wildcard

Like all wildcard squads whatever the formation, they picked the wrong players. My 'heavy' defence (with 3 Toffees) has kept me top of my MLs 2 weeks running.

Salah Sterling KDB Son midfield probably attracting a lot of folks

Throw in Pukkis hattrick and you can see why some would be considering it

Big hauls today for Martial / Vardy / Perez / Rashford etc throw everything back up in the air again though....Allison’s return even more so

Think I’m waiting another while personally

    7. LSK

Most players never NEED to use a wildcard because they keep their team in pretty good shape throughout the season. So it's just about finding the optimum time to use it. If jumping on 3 City and bringing in Spurs and/or Utd attack, I can see why people think this is a great time to hit the button. Agree that it's wise to keep some money at the back though. I would be looking at 6.5, 6.0, 5.5, 4.5, 4.0 if I was to wildcard now.

Lots of people seem very upset about this but I can’t understand why you would care / spend the time looking.

Just play the game to score as many points as possible - this early in the season who cares what your opponents are doing.

Aim higher - try to finish top 1k and your mini leagues will
      Sort themselves out.

not getting a lot of support in truth, link up play is good but not yet really threatening keeper enough. Given lack of 6M options might be worth keeping for next 2 home games - we are creating chances (22 shots and 10 corners v bournemouth).

Absolutely zero competition for places at least

FWIW I think McGinn is currently best for Villa attack - 6 shots, 3 on target v Bou and playing further forward than I would like (our midfield balance is all off at present)

Adrián - your timing is awry. only 5 more solid weeks
Kelly - possibly even less. Pieters - dreadful fixtures. Dunk - Citeh in 2.
      Midfield is beautiful.
As you do not have a solid 3 at the back, let alone 4, you cannot afford Greenwood. You will have to lay out on a 6, or at minimum Origi.

    Thoughts on Lacazette please?
Worth holding through his difficult fixtures? I can't remember how he does against top six teams.

With Pepe and Ceballos joining, that attack is proper deadly. If I had him I'd be keeping him.
      The defence is another matter.

        Thanks Andy.
Ceballos is firmly on the radar too.

        Auba to Kane?

Lacazette doesn't have such an obvious transfer...maybe Rashford?

I’m a Gooner and (mistakenly) gave Pépé a berth in my team yesterday. Ceballos defo on my radar but I don’t like Arse next 2 fixtures so I’m holding off for a bit. For those concerned about Ceballos rotation, I did read (on 90mins.com I think) - a condition of the loan from Real Madrid included a minimum number of pitch time, it was a significant requirement so I’m expecting Ceballos to be the better FPL signing in the long term.

    Hot players in FPL?

    GK: Pope, Ryan
    DF: Digne, Dunk
    MF: Sterling, KDB, Mane, Ndombele
    FW: Aubameyang, Pukki, Barnes

Ceballos is close - if he nails down a spot at 5.5 he will become essential.

It’s hilarious how Martial is now the forgotten man despite the fact after GW1 on here you would have been forgiven for thinking your season was over if you didn’t get him in

I’ve got 5 premium defenders and think it is one too many. To open up some cash for a player who will be bench every single week, who is the best 4.0? Kelly? Will he keep his place?

Currently the most secure might be Hanley.

I've got both VVD and Robbo but no City defence

    Robbo > Laporte for free?

    Play one

    A) Dendoncker (H) Burnley
    B) Cantwell (H) Chelsea

Both wouldn't be a disaster, depending on your defenders. See how Donkers does tomorrow.
