Captain Poll

Close battle expected for Gameweek 3 captaincy

Fantasy Premier League managers have been handed the first captaincy conundrum of the season ahead of Gameweek 3.

After relatively simple debates for the armband in the opening two rounds of matches, it is wide open this week.

Despite amassing more than 50% support for Gameweek 2, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) blanked at Southampton, which could dent his appeal for the visit of Arsenal to Anfield on Saturday.

However, the Egyptian registered a goal and an assist last time he hosted the Gunners in the Premier League, while it is likely that he and his team-mates will have shaken off any cobwebs following the Super Cup final too.

With Arsenal bottom of the league for clean sheets in away matches last season, Sadio Mané (£11.5m) might enter the conversation this week after he registered a goal and assist against Southampton. The former Saint also scored a goal against Arsenal last season.

However, the man with the best record against the Gunners in 2018/19 was Roberto Firmino (£9.5m), who netted three goals in two such matches last term.

The Brazilian has registered attacking returns in both Gameweeks of 2019/20 so far too.

Those put off by Liverpool’s recent displays might turn to Manchester City’s attack as they prepare for a trip to Bournemouth.

The Cherries are without a clean sheet so far this season and had one of the worst defences last season.

That said, Manchester City scored just once on their last visit to the Vitality Stadium, Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) getting the goal.

Either way, Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) has made an excellent start to the new campaign, with four goals in his first two matches, which is certainly captainable form.

Kevin de Bruyne (£9.6m) has begun 2019/20 in a similar vein, with three assists and four bonus points so far and a total score of 18.

Those invested in the Belgian to save money can probably feel more confident putting the armband on him than they did ahead of Gameweek 1.

Presenting a third fixture for us to consider are Spurs, who host Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

The Magpies have already conceded four times this season, letting in three goals on their travels.

In Gameweek 1, Spurs had 31 shots at home against Aston Villa so we might expect a similar volume on Sunday afternoon.

That could be good news for Harry Kane (£11.0m), who scored twice in that match.

We should remember that Son Heung-min (£9.5m) will be back from suspension for Gameweek 3 and could improve Spurs going forward if he is handed a start by Mauricio Pochettino.

You can now vote in our latest captain poll either below or in the sidebar of our website.

Joe and David will be discussing the tricky debate live on our YouTube channel at 12:30pm BST.

Worth moving Perez to KDB for a -4? Or wait a week?

Would really appreciate a vote here:
    Pope (Button)
    TAA VVD Digne Zinch (Rico)
    Salah Sterling Siggy Perez (Dendonck)
    Wilson Wood (Greenwood)

    Have 2FT's:
    A) Wilson, Wood, Perez, TAA --> Kane, Pukki, McGinn, Soyuncu (-8) and 0.1m ITB
    B) Wilson, Perez, TAA --> Pukki, SON, Soyuncu (-4) and 0.8m ITB
    C) WC to:

    Pope (Button)
    WanB Mina Soyuncu (Pieters Lundstram)
    Sterling Mane KDB Trossard McGinn
    Kane Pukki (Greenwood)

Yes, he is a risk. Dyche isn't afraid to keep players in if they are playing well but Taylor was one of Burnley's best players during the second half of the season so wouldn't be surprised to see him return.

Need your help here lads... thx for sharing ur views.

        Pope 4.0
        AWB VvD xxx xxx Lundstram
        Sterling KDB Ceballos Mané xxx
        Kane Barnes Greenwood

        A. 2x 4.5 defs who rotate well + Trossard (spot holder for CHO from GW7 is the remote idea here)
        B. KWP, Zinchenko, Cantwell

Option A positive is I have a 6.0 lid already which suits the structure I would like. But big negative is no City def.

Option B is better right now I feel (is it?) but structure doesnt allow 6.0 mid.

But thats only possible if I upgrade Ceballos to Trossard. And forget Ceballos, who actually was one of the first picks in my WC.

Is Ceballos really that nailed? I'm also on Wildcard and he is a great enabler as I'm looking at a midfield of Martial, KDB, Mane, Sterling + Ceballos. Unfortunately means no Cantwell who is the best of the budget mid/fwd picks.

Cheers. Do you reckon he is nailed in that defence? Quite nice stats so far.

I don't know too much about Brighton so not sure if nailed. They did spend 20mil on a CB in the summer who hasn't played yet so he might not be. He played really well against West Ham though, think the commentators said he was man of the match. So no reason to lose his place in the short-term

New signing. Looking really good. At 4.5 could be a nice differential if for some reason you don't fancy Dunk or Montoya.

Haven't watched any Brighton game so far but stats wise he looks like someone to keep an eye on for sure.

Watch for Webster - £20 million to have a defender on the bench may not last...

Webster was player of the season for us (Bristol City) last season.
A really assured ball playing defender.
I'm actually surprised he hasn't gone straight in, as I think he'll slot into their new look system really nicely.

I would be also interested see results of poll "who are you going to captain?".

        BR non-Kane owner

As a fellow non-Kane owner, I'm not too unhappy finally handing the armband to Raz. He could royally rip through that shonky Bournemouth defence.

Non Kane owner, will make Raz captain. Plus hoping Pool and Arsenal go beserk and both Salah and Auba score goals!!

Will expect also a lot from Sterling. My hidden point was that people might answer who they would like to captain (i.e. Kane) and who they are able/are going to captain - and I would like to also see the latter percentages. I would expect Kane effective C % in this forum to be lower than in the poll but I might be wrong also.

Very lucky to get a small green arrow after a captain fail.
Fraser & Abraham -> Mount & Pukki 2 fts done. Dont like early moves but the potential swings were significant.
Gw 4 wc is looking likely.

Anybody know what happened between Aguero and Pep. Any cause for concern, should I get rid and go with Sterling ??

disagreement when aguero subbed off, both big boys so I wouldn't expect anything to come of it, they made it up later

Pep felt Kun didn't defend well for the first goal. Bit of emotion, all water under the bridge.

WBA definitely underperformed last time in PL. Would not trust their defence.

Which is better - TAA & Perez to:

        A) KWP + KdB
        B) AWB + Martial

        Team for context:

        Heaton
        Zinchenko, TAA, Digne
        Doncker, Salah, Sterling, Perez, Siggy
        Jota, Wilson

        Pope, Montoya, Rico, Greenwood

Best option for this team? C is tempting. Have 2 fts

        A. Barkley > mcginn
        B. Barkley King > mcginn Pukki
        C. Taa Barkley > martial Soyuncu

        Any other suggestions?

        pope
        vvd digne dunk soyuncu
        salah sterling martial perez
        kane king
