Why are Liverpool yet to keep a clean sheet in 2019/20?

Owners of Liverpool defenders are becoming increasingly concerned with their defensive potential this season.

After keeping 21 clean sheets last season, Jurgen Klopp’s men are yet to record one in 2019/20.

Liverpool have already conceded to Norwich at Anfield as well as against Southampton in Gameweek 2.

With many Fantasy managers still doubled-up at the back for the Reds, we have taken another look at the data to see what we can learn.

The aim is to discover whether or not Liverpool have been unfortunate not to keep a clean sheet yet or if there are serious issues at the back for them.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

How did Liverpool’s defence do in Gameweek 2?

If it was not for Adrian's brain fart pass LFC would have had a clean sheet.

It was easily avoidable but those things happen.

Only 1 goal a game conceded. Would not be panacking yet.

Yeah but those goals were against Norwich and Southampton, two teams people expected to be in the bottom 5/6 clubs at the end of the season.

Only one clean sheet all preseason also.

Hmm. Still we’d have had 1 CS and Norwich have been so so good.

Well Norwich weren't that good against Liverpool, but still scored.
And in truth, you're lucky Southampton didn't score twice.

I mean, you'll probably keep a clean sheet against Arsenal, the toughest of the opening fixtures, and everyone will be jumping back on Liverpool defence, that's just how FPL goes.

I thought they were pretty relentless. Really didn’t see them playing like that.
Once the team settles down we should be good.
But it’s only two games. Need to see a bit more.

Yes, it is still "only" two goals and was VvD (and Robbo?) actually to blame for the first one? Or Pukki just great 😉

Trouble is, Southampton had other chances to score. I don't think Liverpool's defence is up to it yet collectively - next two against Arsenal & Burnley will be good to see how they fare

I think it’s more the opposition, though, rather than the number of goals conceded. Against a newly promoted team and a very average Southampton side, one would expect cleansheets in both.

Plus the stats mentioned in the article really don’t bode well.

What about the midfield trio, not shielding defence / GK more?

1st game vs Norwich - very attacking / in form / Pukki, TAA and VVD still get attacking returns

2nd game - 120 mins midweek definitely affected them, goal down to a blunder, still Adrian showed hes a decent shot stopper..

So how can best defence turn into conceding everygame
? seems like something that Klopp can fix, midfield trio get more defensively minded etc

Arsenal next - unlikely clean sheet, but maybe they go out and tighten things up as its Arsenal, and attacking returns possibly for any of their defenders..

Then next two, you'd probably want them back in

TAA s points PPG last year was ridiculous, and VVD seems like he can score at every corner

I'd also note that Liverpool were quite a few goals up vs Norwich before they conceeded so maybe lack of focus.
Early days, some mitigating circumstances but underlying stats not great.
Probably give it a few more weeks and see what happens

This. Naturally as ffs managers we see lack of cs as a sign of defensive errors but surely the defensive midfield duties are more likely to be at fault in this case?

Thoughts on this potential wildcard would be very much appreciated. I'd like to preface the below by saying that the plan is to downgrade Rashford to Barnes/Kean after the next two fixtures, and use the spare money to upgrade Zinchenko to Laporte and/or AWB to VVD when the time to replace Adrian arrives.

    Adrian
    Digne Zinchenko AWB
    Sterling Mane KdB Martial Mount
    Rashford Pukki
    (Button Lundstrum Kelly Wickham)

Nobody likes to think short term more than I do, but you should probably think slightly further than this week if you're using your WC. A Liverpool mid and Kane should be strong scorers over the season. Also, having Kane gives you the flexibility to switch to another expensive striker like Aubameyang if you want/need to. 3M ITB is a waste, if you ask me.

I agree. Big risk. I really didn't rate Perez. I think he might be dropped. I would have liked Maddison but couldn't really make it work. KDB has been off the scale and he is always likely to play well. Laporte I would like to keep but I can't own 4 players. Jimmy's fixtures are not great over the next few (neither are Pukki's). I always planned to downgrade him this week when the best budget striker became available. I have my eyes on Cantwell next week so he can rotate with Lundstram for the last spot.

On a wildcard, current team is:

    Pope Button

    TAA AWB Zinch soyunchu Lindstram

    Salah Sterling Martial Trossard Cantwell

    Kane Pukki Greenwood

Considering moving Salah to Mane and TAA to Digne/AWB to Montoya and upgrading Greenwood to a 6.5. Do you think my original team is better or going with the switches, and if the switches which defensive switch do you think is better?

KDB is very popular around these parts. And possibly good value at his price.

Struggling to afford KDB unless I downgrade Kane or TAA to a budget defender. Downgrading Kane would allow me to improve my bench also but feel he’s essential for the Newcastle game

Thanks, slightly worried about the bench as it is, particularly if cantwell comes in as I will have double Norwich attack and fixtures aren’t brilliant. I kind of almost only have Pukki at the moment for the potential price rises, may ditch before Friday for Jota or Barnes

      Trossard for me
But I guess you could think about these two, McGinn & Ceballos or that Mount guy.

Trossard ez choice for me, Ceballos might be good but too soon

    A) Salah, TAA, Mount, and Barnes
    B) Mane, KWP, Dendoncker, and Kane

All 4 will start, Dendoncker to rotate with Lundstram in B.

    A or B?

I’ve brought Kane in and have the band on him at the moment but I must admit I fancy sterling against Bournemouth.

        Have Sterling Mane and Kane

Gut says avoid City and that Kane could be in Cardiff mode. Newcastle will be on the defensive. They did quite ok against Arsenal.

Arsenal will go to Anfield to attack -,see plenty of goals in that game.

hmmm real tough that tbh. Leaning to Lundstram (probably because he just got me 14 points and is at home. King could get something but he needs a penalty probably. You must decide 😀

I'm fearful of not getting KDB in this week.
Is Moura and TAA to KDB and KWP worth a -4?

    Pope
    TAA VVD Digne
    Sterling Salah Moura Martial Tross
    Pukki Jota
    Greenwood Montoya Rico

No, not for a hit. TAA is gonna get a haul soon and Moura could do well off the bench against a tiring Newcastle defence.

I think no but it's quite close because KDB price is increasing and I'm not confident of a clean sheet for TAA vs Arsenal (regrettably I have double Liverpool defense also), Moura though yeah quite fancy him v Newcastle

What are you doing siggy owners? He is likely to price drop before week 3 whilst at the same time the likes of Martial is increasing. Stick or twist?

I don't blame Siggy owners for transferring him out for Martial, but I'm staying put for now. I just had more important transfers to make.

I'm just accepting that Martial is 8.0 and happy to pay that anyway. Not gonna chase the price rise on this one.

Captain Kane obvious I guess but Mane feels an interesting option.

I get the Kane points if he hauls anyway and Mane is in exciting differential territory and Arsenal defence isn’t all that 🙂

Klopp started Gomez vs Norwich and Matip vs Southampton.

Probably wanted to see which was best to partner with VVD.

This could have had an effect on the situation like communication etc.

Adrian has been pretty decent, mountains ahead of Mignolet and pretty sure plenty of work has been done in training to sort out the issues which have creaped out.

I am happy to have VVD and TAA in my team 🙂
