Why are Liverpool yet to keep a clean sheet in 2019/20?

Owners of Liverpool defenders are becoming increasingly concerned with their defensive potential this season.

After keeping 21 clean sheets last season, Jurgen Klopp’s men are yet to record one in 2019/20.

Liverpool have already conceded to Norwich at Anfield as well as against Southampton in Gameweek 2.

With many Fantasy managers still doubled-up at the back for the Reds, we have taken another look at the data to see what we can learn.

The aim is to discover whether or not Liverpool have been unfortunate not to keep a clean sheet yet or if there are serious issues at the back for them.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

How did Liverpool’s defence do in Gameweek 2?

Tbh...Pukki proved to be a very good striker. So I can understand Liverpool conceding.
Second game was just bad luck.

Norwich could have had 3 or 4 vs Pool, but I am not commenting on Soton's quality, just saying that the goal they conceded could have been avoided.

Pukki took his goal well. He is out performing every big hitter and if Kane can score a hattrick vs Newcastle then hats off 🙂

Wasn't bad luck. If Southampton had a better finisher they'd have won.

      Adrian decent shot stopper...

Don't see how they cant tighten it up, or Klopp to make adjsutments..cant go from best defence to conceding for fun just like that and for it to continue

Attacking returns likely from TAA / Robertson / TAA

Think its too early to be taking them out

Klopp had to decide which CB he wanted to partner VVD, so Gomez or Matip, whicever start next game I am sure the powerhouse defence will be back in business again.

Good point, think Gomez recognised as better than Matip, so if he comes back in, and midfield provide more shielding then no reason why they cant get back to keeping CSs

    Team is:
    Heaton

I think he should be able to play a fair bit. He was suspended, not injured, and he had a full preseason. And with the NLD coming up, I think Poch is going to want to get him up to speed so a lesser opponent (Newcastle) is a decent chance to do that.

    Thinking of -4 for:

    Guilbert > Lundstram
    Perez > Ndombele
    Wilson > Pukki

    Would leave me with

    Heaton / Pope
    zinchenko / taa / lundstram / Soyuncu / KWP
    ndombele / Salah / Sterling / Martial / Dendoncker
    Kean / Jota / pukki

+2m for future investment. Any advice appreciated.

    Hey chaps.

1FT 1.3 ITB. Thinking I’ll roll a FT, giving Perez Siggy one more week (good fixtures), then likely do something like Perez Sig to mcGinn/Trossard/Mount + KDB/Son

Sound ok? Good to roll the FT at the mo?

    Pope // 4.0
TAA VVD Digne Zinchenko // Rico
Salah Sterling(c) Sigurdsson Perez // Dendoncker
    Pukki Jota // Greenwood

Too light in defence. What do you do if TAA/Robertson/Digne goes rampage?

When wildcarding this early its emminent that you get a good balance in the team. Otherwise you might need to take hits in a few weeks already. That's definetely something you want to avoid.

Also prefer Kane over Auba for the next few gameweeks

      2. Shineonme

Digne is possibly out this week. Liverpool defender's are to expensive.

      Very uncertain 🙂

Auba over Kane is interesting. You’re putting a lot of weight on Son.

Mount? Not worth the sacrifice in defence surely. Brighton and Villa long term feels a real headache in defence. You’re essentially budgeting for defensive transfers from premium mids imo

      Captain Mo

Liverpool scored 4 at home last time out. Arsenal won’t be going there to defend and well they can’t defend anyway.

Also predictable that Super Cup and broken preseason would hamper the first 2 weeks. They’ve had a week now.!

I have Kane anyway but seriously contemplating captain Mane. Spurs attack feels dysfunctional right now and Newcastle will definitely be going there to defend. They did ok against Arsenal - not sure Norwich match is the best barometer

Fellow Pope Heaton rotators, who are you starting this week?

    Pope (wol)
    Heaton (EVE)

Gk quality isn't enormously important I don't think. Mainly about defence/team ahead of them and the opposition.

I reckon a packed midfield going to outshine a the any forward line this season especially when budget forwards are looking vslue for money.

Midfield is just such an easier place to score points from with wingers playing there. I think the non budget forward is dead. Five in the middle every week.

I’m absolutely furious about having 5.4 to spend on a defender. The difference in quality of a 5.5 and 4.5-5.0 is ridiculous. Ended up with a not nailed KWP and regret it big time

Indeed. Actually prefer Lundstram @ 4.0 than any 5.0!

Perhaps Monreal or AMN could be a good shout though.

    How's this draft chaps?

    Pope
    Zinchenko, AWB, Lundstram, Dunk
    Mane, Sterling, KDB, Martial
    Kane, Pukki

    (Button, Dendoncker, Soyuncu, Greenwood)

Lundstram/Dunk/Dendoncker/Soyuncu rotation looks decent for the next 4 weeks

    Cheers!

    Is this WC too unbalanced?

    Pope
    TAA Robertson Digne Lund
    Salah Sterling KDB Martial Mount
    Pukki

    Button Hanley Wickham Greenwood

    Bench is dreadful I know

    1. Catastrophe
      • 13 Years

Would lose 1 or even 2 Liverpool defenders on WC (I'm going without...see above). Nice Team but missing Spurs attack and I think Kane is only viable option right now. So perhaps Salah -> Mane and make use of the decent 4.5 defence options to get Kane in.

No spurs will hurt. I'm the defense is to expensive for my liking.

Are these changes worth a wildcard?

    Robbo (already got TAA)
    Fraser
    Maddison
    King
    Robinson
    Heaton

    to

    Zinchenko
    KDB
    Martial
    Pukki
    Cantwell
    Button

Possibly others too, like Digne out if injured.

Pretty set on this wildcard. So please, tear it apart so I can go back to the tinkering.

    Ryan
    TAA Digne AWB
    Sterling KDB Martial Mount McGinn*
    Kane Rashford

    Subs: Button Lundstram Wickham Hanley

    *Ceballos instead maybe?

Pope for sure. Burnley defence generally solid and Pope always good for save points. That's who I'm going for.
