Which FPL defenders are the most attacking in 2019/20 so far?

The 2018/19 season was the year of the defender from a Fantasy Premier League perspective, with the three best value-for-money FPL assets all belonging to Liverpool’s backline.

The Reds and Manchester City racked up 41 clean sheets between them (no team had recorded 20 shut-outs in a single campaign since 2011/12; last season we had two clubs achieving that) and six defenders hit double figures for attacking returns.

There was a lot of talk of FPL managers going ‘five at the back’ in pre-season, although the momentum behind that strategy stalled as we approached Gameweek 1 and lost further traction once 2019/20 begun.

Everton are the only club to have registered clean sheets in both of their top-flight fixtures, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs among the ten teams yet to record a single shut-out.

Clean sheets are just one route to points, of course, and we Fantasy managers love an FPL defender who can pick up the odd attacking return at the other end of the pitch.

With that in mind, our latest Members’ article takes a look at the defenders who have demonstrated an offensive threat in Gameweeks 1 and 2.

It is still very early days in the 2019/20 campaign, it should be said, and there has to be a big disclaimer about any findings in this article.

Certainly, we’ll get a better picture of the lay of the land once we’re a month or two into the new season and there is a bigger data sample to analyse.

Nevertheless, any early patterns can help us steal a march on other Fantasy managers and identity which defenders could chip in with a goal or assist over the coming Gameweeks – and possibly compensate for any loss of clean sheets.

Members can read on for this analysis, while those wishing to subscribe can do so by clicking here.

Selling Wilson this week or next but used my FTs. Two 5s is fine but I don’t like his next three.

    A) Sell tonight (before he falls) but for a hit. In this instance bringing in Haller (who has just fallen so if “safe”)

    B) Sell next week for free (although another transfer may of course be needed) but he will have dropped. In this instance I will scout Haller and Kean.

only you can answer this question, I've taken a hit for Martial because I know I want him for the next 5+ weeks (unless he gets injured of course) - if you don't know for sure then I wouldn't bother doing it this week

Thanks sadio sane. Sounds dumb but it just feels right. I also really like his fixture.

A lot of it is not wanting to lose 0.1 on wilson when it’s avoidable though.

    Need some help here gents:

    A) Wilson, Fraser, Salah -> Pukki, kDB, Mane
    B) Wilson, Fraser, Digne -> Pukki, KDB, AWB

Both require a -4 obv. Which do you prefer? Currently leaning towards A depending on Digne fitness.

How does my W/C team rate against others you’ve seen..??

    Pope
    AWB / VVD / KWP
    Sterling / Martial / KDB / Ceballos
    Firmino / Kane(c) / Pukki

Button / Doug Luiz / Lundstram / Kelly

I personally think it offers good flexibility in hopping on any emerging wagons and not getting left at the station.

    What do we think...??

Thanks for the reply. Leaning towards Kane too, because he feels more captainable - for myself, and to guard against others. KDB almost certainly won't be captained regularly, so feels less risky going without. Logic make sense?

Granted means rotating Lund, Kelly, Greenwood & Wickham but ain't that half the fun? Aren't you hoping the names you mention make up the points that one of those four MAY not get? Sure is for me!

Also, no reason why can't do Digne down to to Mina or another 5.5 and upgrade elsewhere.
Personally I'm hoping Greenwood eventually gets starts after OGS' comments.

Your draft looks decent. We're in agreement that the hope is the big hitters make up for the enablers (probable) lack of points. I just don't feel right to be relying on rotating two 4m defenders. I should have mentioned I want Pukki in there too:

          Pope, 4.0
          Digne, AWB, ?, ?, Lindstrom
          Sterling, Mane, KDB, Martial, Cantwell
          Kane, Pukki, ?

Is there a chance Rashford is given penalty responsibility now after the other night? Scored 3/3 in 2019 I believe, which helps his case somewhat.

Solskjaer specifically stated in his post match interview that nothing will change on the penalty taking front. Both are designated penalty takers and whoever is more confident on the day will take the penalty.

      Just B for me.

King > Pukki next week. You've already missed 0.2m in rises and won't likely miss another 0.1m. You can get Pukki next week and you retain your two FTs.

Cheers, about time :). Kane wasn't on my list but got that feeling. And prefer martial to Rashford but Son and Martial is v difficult. Still not sure on AWB or a 4.5 so I have a good amount of money itb to jump on a bandwagon other than pukki. Soyuncu standing out rn

        1. Salah’s Sonnet
          • 12 Years
          4 years, 7 months ago

Yeah Kane i was quite intent on leaving but i can just see it now him proving me wrong haha. Defo prefer Martial to Rashford, and it's easier to start with Kane then move to Son if needed, see how he comes in and does first.
Hmmm, i reckon AWB is worth it, but having cash itb is nice also. Soyuncu is appealing, but a Burnley defender could be wise, even if doubling up with Pope imo, Pieters, Lowton 🙂

I have Hendo so a Burnley was really appealing tbh. Had my eyes on Lowton... Would leave me a fat 1.9 itb so could do Wesley to Pukki and maybe even Robinson to Mount or Trossard. More decisions... Yay. How's your latest draft looking?
