Which FPL defenders are the most attacking in 2019/20 so far?

The 2018/19 season was the year of the defender from a Fantasy Premier League perspective, with the three best value-for-money FPL assets all belonging to Liverpool’s backline.

The Reds and Manchester City racked up 41 clean sheets between them (no team had recorded 20 shut-outs in a single campaign since 2011/12; last season we had two clubs achieving that) and six defenders hit double figures for attacking returns.

There was a lot of talk of FPL managers going ‘five at the back’ in pre-season, although the momentum behind that strategy stalled as we approached Gameweek 1 and lost further traction once 2019/20 begun.

Everton are the only club to have registered clean sheets in both of their top-flight fixtures, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs among the ten teams yet to record a single shut-out.

Clean sheets are just one route to points, of course, and we Fantasy managers love an FPL defender who can pick up the odd attacking return at the other end of the pitch.

With that in mind, our latest Members’ article takes a look at the defenders who have demonstrated an offensive threat in Gameweeks 1 and 2.

It is still very early days in the 2019/20 campaign, it should be said, and there has to be a big disclaimer about any findings in this article.

Certainly, we’ll get a better picture of the lay of the land once we’re a month or two into the new season and there is a bigger data sample to analyse.

Nevertheless, any early patterns can help us steal a march on other Fantasy managers and identity which defenders could chip in with a goal or assist over the coming Gameweeks – and possibly compensate for any loss of clean sheets.

Members can read on for this analysis, while those wishing to subscribe can do so by clicking here.

Obviously more excited for that ;). What you reckon it'll be like? Palace were awful, just hope we kick against Kop 2nd half this time.

Think it will be more even than our fans think. I dread the probable 4-3-1-2 Rodgers will start with. I think if we start the 4-3-3 with Maddison and Tielemans as 8s we should be able to pin you back enough to outscore you. Thankfully Vardy loves scoring against people who piss him off so he should be extra fired up.

I watched him in the first game. Looked atrocious. Hes still in my team though because Im a firm believer of fixtures for those low tier strikers.

None for me. You lose the highest scoring player of the last 2 seasons who is on penalties and half of the set pieces to save 1 million basically. Madness imo. If Salah ever gets injured il make the straight swap. Not before.

Defintely not but with all those stats and norwich attacking football he is going to score/assist.. Fixtures are ok + probability to be on penos + no forward in 6.5/7.5 is as good as him probably only jiminez.

Something similar to Galza on previous page.
    Pope
    Digne,VVD,AWB
    Sterling,KDB,Martial,Dendonker
    Kane,Pukki,Firmino

    Button,Cantwell,Lundstrum,Kelly

I know, no Salah or Mane but wouldn’t need to captain them with Sterling and Kane in the side so owning Firmino still gets in on the attack and takes the headache away of 3 premium captain choices.
The 11 th position is between Dendonker,Cantwell and Lundstrum every week.

Martial at 7.5M is exceptional value. He's starting as a number 9 in a top 6 club. Two budget mids would cost you around 10M, and they certainly won't outscore Martial every week.

            • 4 Years
            4 years, 7 months ago

So you saying Martial is better having both Mcginn and Trossard in midfield?

When has Martial ever topped the ranks?

He has gone missing in both GW1 and 2. No bonus points so far. UTD would be better off playing Rashford at CF. If that happens I would get Rashford.

            1. ChickenTikkaMoSalah
              • 8 Years
              4 years, 7 months ago

Ole has said Martial will be getting lots of goals and will be starting as a striker. He is playing in front of some quality players, and he is by far the better option when compared to McGinn/Trossard who are playing for teams that will struggle against the top teams, and Brighton and Villa simply lack the quality United have. Take your pick, but Martial will perform much more than the bandwagons who have scored in just one game.

            2. cheekumz
              • 9 Years

Of course Martial i unlikely / def won't score more than McGinn AND Trossard. But that's a ridiculous argument as its not an actual comparison. It would be Martial + another player scoring more than McGinn and Trossard.

    The wildcard!!!

So a few in my mini leagues have used their WC.
They’ve boasted that there TV has gone past 101. The Martial, Pukki and Rashford Price rises they’ve pocketed.
Got rid of early deadwood like Fraser & Perez. They have bought in form players and players likely to rise. Stopping any players in jeopardy of dropping.
Some play the TV game, I have in the past as buying players on FH and last WC you will have more better players to choose from.

I have in the past used the WC early to gain all the above mentioned.
Now I want KDB, Martial etc.
They both double rised and feel like my competitors have gained a massive advantage as the players mentioned all look like season keepers!

Is it a reason to be concerned so early in the season?

Yes that is true. Only thing this time round that KDB and Martial look so important to their respective teams and they are such good value. I’ve used my 2 ft’s and am gutted I’ve not got any of that pie yet!

Transfers done, on -8 sadly, got Kane in for hit so I guess he has to be captain than?

    Robertson, Coleman, Zincenko, Lundstram
    Salah, Sterling, Martial, Perez
    Pukki, Kane

He has a few good fixtures coming up. But realistically it’s hardly a Kane scale risk is it?

Well he's scored more career league goals against Newcastle than Harry Kane.

Same. But pricechanges forces me to go with the flow. Otherwise he'd be 7.1 in no time and I would be priced out

7 isn’t bad if he is as good as people seem to think he is (despite his bang average record his entire career bar 1 season, all at a lower level).

He may not score again until GW6, but given their fixtures I’d still be tempted at that point.

Stats say he shoots a lot and his conversion is decent.
Natural goalscorer in a team that is built to feed him = no brainer

      1. The Tinkerman
        • 8 Years

His record prior to last season doesn’t suggest natural goal scorer. Flopped in Scotland, flopped in Bundesliga, then failed to reach double figures multiple seasons in the danish league... it’s impressive that he has made it to the premier league just a few years after

So long as the rest of his team mates create chances for him. He just looks right on the eye test, positioning, movement and off the ball work as well. Mitrovic looked good at the start of last year but then got starved of chances.

Indeed. Could be Mitro, could be Michu. Let’s see.

I just need Pukki to cover 130 points this season. I doubt any other forward except Jota will be able to do a 20X. We’ll see.

      Me neither
Looks like a bandwagon about to fall over.
But "Andy Carroll Syndrome" (aka (more successfully) "Andy Johnson Syndrome") - top scorers in Championship promotion season, scored a hatful in their first Prem season
(or did until Carroll got injured)

I don't think he's an Andy Cole, but an Andy Johnson or Andy Carroll like season would be a great FPL asset.
