Which FPL defenders are the most attacking in 2019/20 so far?

The 2018/19 season was the year of the defender from a Fantasy Premier League perspective, with the three best value-for-money FPL assets all belonging to Liverpool’s backline.

The Reds and Manchester City racked up 41 clean sheets between them (no team had recorded 20 shut-outs in a single campaign since 2011/12; last season we had two clubs achieving that) and six defenders hit double figures for attacking returns.

There was a lot of talk of FPL managers going ‘five at the back’ in pre-season, although the momentum behind that strategy stalled as we approached Gameweek 1 and lost further traction once 2019/20 begun.

Everton are the only club to have registered clean sheets in both of their top-flight fixtures, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs among the ten teams yet to record a single shut-out.

Clean sheets are just one route to points, of course, and we Fantasy managers love an FPL defender who can pick up the odd attacking return at the other end of the pitch.

With that in mind, our latest Members’ article takes a look at the defenders who have demonstrated an offensive threat in Gameweeks 1 and 2.

It is still very early days in the 2019/20 campaign, it should be said, and there has to be a big disclaimer about any findings in this article.

Certainly, we’ll get a better picture of the lay of the land once we’re a month or two into the new season and there is a bigger data sample to analyse.

Nevertheless, any early patterns can help us steal a march on other Fantasy managers and identity which defenders could chip in with a goal or assist over the coming Gameweeks – and possibly compensate for any loss of clean sheets.

Members can read on for this analysis, while those wishing to subscribe can do so by clicking here.

Still pondering this. Opinions greatly appreciated.

    A) Kane + Mount + Dunk

    B) Jota + Son + Zinchenko

Would captain Kane this week if I have him but going forward more likely to captain Sterling/Salah.

I think Bournemouth's opponents may have been tougher than we all expected at the start. Look at how villa defended against spurs and how Sheffield united kept a clean sheet in their following match. Wilson will get you goals, maybe not this week, but gw4 onwards.

        Wan-Bissaka - Digne - VVD - Lundstram - Kelly

Salah - Sterling - Mane - KDB (Dendonkey)

        Pukki (Greenwood, Wickham)

I have had a great start so far and am in nose-bleed territory in terms of overall ranking so am reluctant to change, but that does appeal.

    Question for UTD fans.

I am not a UTD fan but who would you rather lead your line? Martial or Rashford?

I reckon Rashford is a waste of space out wide.

Martial for me. He's a better finisher. Main thing he needs to improve is his movement off the ball.

Rashford is better out wide for me, especially left.

Rashford the better all round player in my honest opinion.

He's not a winger, but I like him as an inside forward, which is where he's been playing.

I disagree on being a better player. He works harder but Martial has far superior dribbling and finishing.

            • 7 Years

If you wanna talk about finishing etc then OGS needs to maybe chance Greenwood starting? He has said naturally he's more talented at finishing than the pair of them.
Push both Martial and Rashford wide and play Greenwood as the frontman. Not sure who you'd play in the 10. Maybe James and let James, Martial and Rashford just rotate throughout the game?

but he's not actually playing wide. technically he lines up in the wide areas, but he's driving inside every chance he gets

Where have you seen Rashford ending up in attacking situations?

        Centrally or out wide?

    3. manu4life99
      • 14 Years
      4 years, 8 months ago

Neither are great finishers but both can be unplayable on their day or go completely missing. The rotation carrot of the no.9 spot should help keep both players motivated to fire.

However as a utd fan, it's important to be realistic about this season, it's a young squad and 4th would be a great result. We still have a v weak midfield, no leaders and no proven goalscorer who has the pedigree of regularly hitting 20 goals a campaign.

7.5m/8.5m values are decent value but let's not kid ourselves, neither are going to score like an aguero, kane or aubameyang in terms of ppg

Can't decide who to bench for him + double liverpool defence kinda hurt the past two 2gw + fancy Ceballos getting attacking returns

I would highly recommend getting rid of one Liverpool defender then and upgrade elsewhere like striker(s) as having 6.5 million defender on bench is waste imo.

    Do we like it? (RMWCT)

    Pope
    AWB VvD Zinchenko Digne (Lundstram)
    Sterling Mané KDB Cantwell (Dendoncker)
    Kane Barnes (Greenwood)

Each week one of Lundstram/Cantwell/Dendoncker in the starting XI.

    What do you think?
Would really like Ceballos but not sure where to downgrade as Im 1.0 short.

I like it a lot and like the idea of rotating those 3 enablers.
Something I’d be doing if I pushed the WC button.
I’ve been making drafts but swaying towards keeping my current team now with a -4.

I have the same wildcard, a way you can upgrade to fit in ceballos, would be either zinc or awb -> 4.0m, then cantwell or dendonker to ceballos, and then rotate lundstram and the 4.5m mid that you kept!!

Leicester (good fixtures), Burnley (tight at the back) and Brighton (improved) with Sheffield United (Lundstram) as back up. Liverpool keeper. Cheap but I’m not sure tear worthy?

          • 7 Years

One goal ruins that, as I found out with a double pool defence to start the season. I'd still want some set-piece or attacking threat based defenders.
Counter-argument even if they all hit you 2 pointers you're looking for your front 7 to make up for the missing 4 points from CS' which makes sense.

            • 9 Years

That’s my logic. From consulting the fixture list I believe I will land two clean sheets from this cheap back line per week and if then back the premium front seven to outscore a more balanced team man for man.

I understand the “haters” view tbh. I started the season with a premium defence and I normally WC later into the season. I decided to go early this year for a number of (hopefully good) reasons. My gut instinct is telling me that this season will provide a number of budget defenders who, combined with a premium attack (with funds in midfield in particular), will outscore the premium defenders.

Son is a bit of a gamble. Will he start against Newcastle?

I think Poch might introduce him as a sub...Kane is the heavy hitter in that fixture IMO

              Other than that, very nice.

Adrian and Kelly are short-term picks (might only get a couple of gameweeks out of them)

I'd personally prefer some 5.5m defenders in there like Mina and AWB rather than all 4.5ms, Everton and United look good for CSs.
