Which FPL defenders are the most attacking in 2019/20 so far?

The 2018/19 season was the year of the defender from a Fantasy Premier League perspective, with the three best value-for-money FPL assets all belonging to Liverpool’s backline.

The Reds and Manchester City racked up 41 clean sheets between them (no team had recorded 20 shut-outs in a single campaign since 2011/12; last season we had two clubs achieving that) and six defenders hit double figures for attacking returns.

There was a lot of talk of FPL managers going ‘five at the back’ in pre-season, although the momentum behind that strategy stalled as we approached Gameweek 1 and lost further traction once 2019/20 begun.

Everton are the only club to have registered clean sheets in both of their top-flight fixtures, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs among the ten teams yet to record a single shut-out.

Clean sheets are just one route to points, of course, and we Fantasy managers love an FPL defender who can pick up the odd attacking return at the other end of the pitch.

With that in mind, our latest Members’ article takes a look at the defenders who have demonstrated an offensive threat in Gameweeks 1 and 2.

It is still very early days in the 2019/20 campaign, it should be said, and there has to be a big disclaimer about any findings in this article.

Certainly, we’ll get a better picture of the lay of the land once we’re a month or two into the new season and there is a bigger data sample to analyse.

Nevertheless, any early patterns can help us steal a march on other Fantasy managers and identity which defenders could chip in with a goal or assist over the coming Gameweeks – and possibly compensate for any loss of clean sheets.

Members can read on for this analysis, while those wishing to subscribe can do so by clicking here.

The adopted wisdom is that the wildcard should contain as few risks as possible; after all, you don’t have another wildcard to correct it. I just want to present an alternative view not only on the merits of early wildcarding, but how you can steel a Solly on others.

+ We’ve seen 2 gameweeks of information. Sure, it’s not 5 or 8, but early price rises can prevent the ‘ideal’ team by that stage.

+ We’ve seen how teams line up both home and away. We’re able to judge the defensive minded teams (e.g. Wolves, Sheff Utd) from the attack minded teams (e.g. Norwich, Brighton) and those that fall in between.

+ Already we’ve identified budget starters (Lundstram, Cantwell, McGinn), that enable an extra big hitter.

+ Crucially, we’ve had a couple of major incidents that present an opportunity: Liverpool losing Alison for an extended period, Martial playing as striker in the absence of Lukaku, and Pukki’s explosion.

    I’m moving quickly on:
+ Otamendi (5.4m) - Stones out for 10 days with a rectus femoris strain.
+ Ceballos (5.6m) - in the Ramsey role and picking up the creative duties for Aubameyang, Lacazette and Pepe.
+ Adrian (4.5m) - partner with Pope and you benefit from any clean sheets that Robbo, TAA and VVD earn you, while spending 2-2.5m elsewhere to outscore their attacking threat.
+ Kane (11m) - while he was fortunate to score a brace against Villa, NEW(h) and ARS(a) are two excellent fixtures to see if he’s a captaincy option. Possible switch to an Arsenal striker as a get out option.

+ Availability of Son / Firmino’s new found goal threat.

Not everyone’s cup of tea, I know, but an aggressive strategy nonetheless.

Wouldn't want ANY of those for right now not even Kane who isn't worth the headache..

I have a full playable bench so don’t mind carrying him as such.

We can’t predict a player’s form from only 2 games, but we can identify so much. It’s difficult to quantify, but as a guess, I’d say 80%.

There is no point at which a sample 'becomes meaningful' in fantasy football. Only points at which you gain less or more confidence. And given we can change players weekly effectively operate on a resolution of 1 gameweek and that fantasy football is chaotic and supercomplex then large samples are not always the most useful tool for predicting outcomes on that resolution. Gameweeks 18 and 19 may well be a more helpful predictor of gameweek 20 than would gameweeks 1-19

Otamendi isn’t a potentially good pick because he’s nailed for 2 weeks, he’s a good pick because of his goal threat from set pieces.

I don’t see the downside to Adrian. If he blanks, so have all the teams with Liverpool defenders. Yes they could score or assist, but so can the extra 2.5m you’ve invested elsewhere.

It's hard to get an even handed response from many people about an early wildcard because so many people will be salty about the fact they're having, choosing to sit tight and watch others load their team up with all the hottest performers, with prime fixtures. It's understandable, it's a tough place to be, to be gambling through inaction that this week won't be a better time to WC than any future, unknown week. Its more comfortable to have an early lead and watch people WC from the rear view mirror

I love week 2-3 for all the reasons you list. It's a prime time to things very right (or wrong) more quickly than anyone else. This year is particularly appealing given that last year's prime assets, Liverpool, should be under even more scrutiny than last year on account of price rises. This is going under the radar a bit imo because those who started with know that points are round the corner and are hanging on for that. I felt they offered dubious value but started with three for fear of getting left behind in weeks 1/2. I don't have that fear now. They will produce, but good value has emerged to challenge them. The fixtures of City, United and Spurs, the lack of pressure on rotation and the relative good value, and the cementing of Sterling as a fixture proof (C) all points towards dropping and monitoring Liverpool, for me.

Awesome response, thanks! I find I need to shorten what I post and not elaborate on some of my thoughts to avoid the dreaded TL;DR, so it’s nice to see a reply that explores them further.

I had Son over Firmino in my initial WC draft but couldn’t justify that risk. Yes, it looks like Liverpool attacking cover, but the stats support Firmino and he has a great scoring record vs Arsenal. It also avoids Greenwood as the 3rd striker and means Lacazette (who I really fancy to do well) as a straight swap should I need Plan B.

Agree with your thoughts on Sterling. He’s my captain despite bringing in Kane (anything he gets is a bonus).

Yes next season maybe wildcard week 1 after the pre-season data. What’s changing is more people casually playing and growing popularity around the world is leading to more price changes. I’d think they’ll adjust the algos at some point. This season accept players will change in price more

To be fair the price changes last year were less volatile than previous years. What has definitely changed is the amount of low ownership non starting/playing players that are dropping. Plus they are always at their most volatile over the first few weeks of a season.

So it is either 2 of the following

KDB Sterling Salah and an attacking defence, decent forwards.

Or Martial Mane Sterling trying to fit in KDB and Kane and pick me defence.

    Have I got this right?

Basically yeah if you have salah or mane and sterling and Kdb and martial or son then you can’t have kane without having an horrific back line.

Yeah King Kane. However I could feel that the KDB/Sterling double up is too much and could one for a Mount for example and upgrade Greenwood/Wickham

This is my team but with McGinn instead of Ceballos. I've also gone Targett instead of Kelly ad I expext him to dislodge Neil Taylor shortly so is arguably a better long term pick. Somewhat risky but there we are.

No idea about the FFS hive mind team you are looking to clarify here but fwiw I have gone with sterling, kdb, Kane, martial, son with a pretty strong defence. Two good strikers and a bench fodder

No Liverpool. In a vacuum id much rather have mane over kane but the dearth of good forwards and surplus of good mids means there's no way to swap them without weakening the team.

          Pope
          Maguire zinchenko lundstram Soyonku Lowton
          Sterling kdb son martial mount
          Kane Haller Greenwood

As a WHU fan I hope Haller comes good for you. He's the one you'd need to lose for Son > Mane I see.
I just ditched Haller on my WC... Luckily before his price drop!

Yeah that looks the least bad way of doing it, Haller and son to mane and maupay/Ings and shave 0.5 from defence. Still think it loses me points at the end of the day

What it boils down to is either having Salah or Kane.

Salah Sterling and KDB plus 2 budget mids, 2 budget forwards and an attacking defence.

That is why I do not have Kane.

Thoughts/alternate options guys? is usually a good way to go, then you'd get a flood of Cantwell (enabler), Mount (seems to be Frank's favourite), Wilshere (WH not played the best but potential going forward as an assister). Other people might ask what you budget would be without him

Ah shucks, you got me. Well, judging by Ceballos' performance in the last game, I would be very surprised if Emery dropped him any time soon. So I would hold until you see some hard evidence, rather than try and second guess.

Reluctantly I've dropped Vardy and Perez on wildcard. Not because I don't think they'll do well. I agree with you. If brodgers stops playing a moronic system and benches Perez or Choudry and play a winger like Albrighton or Barnes I'm sure they'll smash Sheffield and Norwich. Think Maddison and Vardy will do very well but don't quite prefer them over martial, son and kdb

Emerson. He has the best goal threat of the defenders with over 90 mins of playing time. 0.63 xG

If you think United defense is going to yield 10+ cleans this season, Maguire worth the shout and may be the happy middle with his goal threat from set pieces and baps from CBI.
