Opinion

When is the best time to play your FPL Wildcard?

After a great Gameweek 1 for many, Gameweek 2 brought a lot of us back down to earth with a bang.

So much so, that quite a few managers are activating their first Wildcard already, after just two weeks.

We spend months pulling our hair out building a Gameweek 1 squad only to rip it up before September has even arrived. That’s FPL. Things change so quickly.

It’s going to be a very interesting few weeks ahead to see how the early Wildcarders perform against those who are taking a more patient approach.

The beauty of FPL is that there is no right or wrong way to play it. You play the game the way you want to. If you care about what others think about your decision to Wildcard/not Wildcard, you need to take a step back and reassess things.

Do what’s right for your squad and ignore everything else. Don’t let the ‘noise’ influence your decision and that goes for any transfer not just Wildcarding.

Early transfers have been a hot topic this week too. I have always been a very patient FPL manager and it has served me well in the past, but I find with each new season, it is getting more and more difficult to play the waiting game, particularly in these early weeks when the transfer market is crazy.

I made rare early moves on Monday night as I had £0.0m to play with for my intended targets.

It is easier to move early at this stage of the campaign as there is less chance of issues arising during the week with no cup/European matches (apart from Wolves – stay safe Diogo!), and also the fact that the Wildcard is always there to fall back on if disaster does strike before the weekend.

As often as I can this season, I will continue to wait until Friday night to gather all the information possible before pulling the trigger, but as we’ve seen this week, sometimes you’ve got no choice but to act fast. Teemu Pukki (£6.8m) better act fast in Saturday’s early kick-off!

Double Liverpool defence is likely to be abandoned by most Wildcarders this week and by those looking to free up funds for the likes of Kevin De Bruyne (£9.6m) and Harry Kane (£11.0m).

The Liverpool defence has disappointed thus far but if it wasn’t for Adrian’s (£4.5m) howler against Southampton, and Danny Ings‘ (£6.0m) miss, the narrative would be very different this week.

Looking past the Arsenal fixture this weekend, Jurgen Klopp’s side face Burnley (away), Newcastle (home) and Sheffield United (away) in the next four.

Patience could well be rewarded with the likes of Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m), Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m).

A clean sheet against Arsenal this weekend could see Wildcarders scrambling to get their ditched Liverpool defenders back in ahead of Gameweek 4.

There was a tweet doing the rounds on Wednesday about Benjamin Mendy (£6.0m) being back in training which will have Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.5m) owners slightly worried about his place in the City team.

Pep Guardiola has been quoted recently saying he wants to see Mendy train well for a month before considering him for selection, but it’s Pep, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Mendy make an appearance sooner than expected.

If you own Zinchenko, it’s an easy one though, you just keep him until Mendy does reappear. On a Wildcard though, it might be worth trying to find the extra £1.0m for Aymeric Laporte (£6.5m) for peace of mind.

The forgotten man of FPL, Son Heung-min (£9.5m) is likely to make a return to action at home to Newcastle this weekend. Owned by less than 2% of managers, he could be the ultimate differential in Gameweek 3.

There is no guarantee that he goes straight back into the starting XI though, so it does feel like a risky move. Fortune favours the brave!

Good news and bad news now. The good news is Callum Wilson (£7.9m) is gone! Watch him wipe out my Zinchenko clean sheet on Sunday and doing his salute celebration to rub it in.

The bad news is my wife beat me again in Gameweek 2 in our head to head league. She’s six points ahead already and mentions that fact every single day.

Martial was her hero last weekend and I have a feeling he could be my downfall again this weekend. Hopefully, I can claw back three points.

Good luck all in Gameweek 3 and have great weekend.

Lessons learned from Gameweek 2

Need help to complete my WC template. Which combo is best:

    A) Mina + Barnes (1.6 itb that i could use to change Martial to Son)
    or
    B) Soyuncu + Kean (0.3 itb)

    Pope / Button

    Zinchenko / AWB / Lund / Hanley / ?

    Martial / KDB / Sterling / Salah / Mount

    Pukky / Barnes / ?

    Thanks!

Sometimes I do have to question the way FFS rates game difficulty in the fixtures. For example, just looking at Bournemouth fixtures. Their home game against Everton is ranked as difficulty level 2, whilst their home game against Man Utd is difficulty 4. Given that Everton have the best defensive record in the league in 2019 which is now a significant amount of games, those difficulty grades make little sense.

    BIG DILEMMA...

    Dendocker or Lundstram

One has easier opponent, playing for a better team and has more chances to produce goal/assist
    But
The other one is defender so he has the chance of keeping clean sheet and also small chance of producing goal/assist

    *P.S. also own Ayoze Perez

I would be disappointed with that output - CSs could be as low as 15 I suppose, but would expect way more than 5 attacking returns for TAA, and probably more than 5 for VVD.

AWB 2nd most owned def in the game.

Who would you rather have, AWB, TAA or Robertson considering attacking returns plus clean sherts plus bonus points.

If you do not have VVD then you will be trying to get him sooner or later.

      No Son or Kane?

When you look at the fixtures from now to GW13, how many Salah captaincies are there?

      I was making it only two!! (GW5 & GW8)

And even in those two weeks Sterling has Norwich / Wolves and Kane has Palace / Brighton

This madness has caused me to go without Mane or Salah on WC. The lack of Allison has also caused me to go pool defenceless

          No I went totally liverpoolless

I wouldn't normally be that 'reckless' tbh as it could obviously backfire

But I think it's an infirm risk with potentially huge upside, and the downside is kind of mitigated by spurs, City, man Utd, Evertons strong fixtures

          Sterling, KDB, Son, Martial
          Kane, Pukki
          (Button, Lundstram, Cantwell, Wickham)

It does feel a bit exposed for sure, but it's got a great chance of working out favourably over the next 10 weeks or so

I think son is a cert to start, he's their best pacy forward by a country mile, and well rested after the suspension

came to the same conclusion. feels wrong, but ultimately im probably going to perma captain Sterling so 10+ for any player is a bit much if not captaining. they need to have form & fixtures going for them (e.g. Kane)

Too much money on the bench. Lots of great low price mid and def out there. No city is ballsy. The team looks exciting. Lots of attacking potential. I would keep Siggy for no more than 1 more week, despite his fixtures. Martial is better value

    Is Laporte worth 6.5m?

City's fixtures look amazing and they are the best def in the league but that price tag just feels a bit too much.

Not having him on my wildcard means no City def as I don't think the other are nailed and going Pope over Ederson make sense to me.

    These are my 2 options:
    A) VVD, Laporte & Cantwell (442)
    B) TAA, Mount & Soyuncu (352)
(Cantwell/Soyuncu will be on the bench most weeks.)

    Appreciate your thoughts! 🙂

will outscore VVD I think, but there are City defenders available for 5.5 if you can supplement them with a bench.

      outside of Laporte you have

Mendy/Walker/Zink/Cancelo/Otamendi/Stones duking it out for 3 places. at least one of those will start the majority of games not sure which yet but id probably go with Cancelo

I think he will be the highest scoring 4.5 keeper at the end of the season.

Plays behind a well organised defence who force a lot of opposition shots from distance giving him save points. Burnley also relinquish possession of the ball meaning his chance of BPS are a lot higher when they do keep a clean sheet.

Foolish or inspired to go without Salah/Mane/Liv defence

    Pope 4
    Digne AwB Otamendi 4 4
    Sterling KdB Martial Mount 4.5
    Kane Firminio Pukki

The former. Just feel that extra point for mid goals makes Salah/Mane better value that the wonderful, but often deep lying Bobby.

no pool defence is fine but no salah or mane is very risky to me

basically comes down Salah & Kean/Haller or Mane & Rash or Kane & Bobby.

Honestly if captaincy is falling to Sterling I dont think it makes a jot of difference from an expected points point of view, and the random variance of one combination or another will drown it all out anyway.

    FPL Draft;
    Abraham or Giroud?
    Alonso or Emerson?

Have held Alonso as I can afford to bench him but not sure if/when he'll get his place back.

depends on the structure of the team.
Ceballos allows 3 at the back type formation. so if you have expensive defenders go with him.

Ha I definitely don’t. On a wc, plan to downgrade one of the strikers and get KDB for Ceballos, and VVD. Any advice would be greatly appreciated..

        Pope (Button)
        Digne AWB Dunk (Lundstram Kelly)
        Sterling Mane Martial Ceballos (Cantwell)
        Kane Rashford Pukki

in my view you cant really have 3 uber-premiums, without sacrificing the star picks like KdB/Martial/defence.
pick Sterling and 1 of {Kane/Mane/Salah} it will make the team better overall.

Is captaining Son over Sterling too much of a risk at this stage in the season.

    A) Son - he who dares.
    B) Sterling - having Son is enough of a differential.

Nice town. No idea about the Uni though. In terms of student lifestyle, no idea - guess it is a lot different now than when I went to Uni 20 years ago when it was all about getting pissed and stoned every night.

Keep reasonably up to date with lectures & assessments - otherwise it falls like a hammer & can be hard to catch back up.
They say 40 hours should be enough even on engineering, so plenty of free time if you manage it properly
Join a half a dozen or more clubs/societies, chop back to the ones you like most. If they don't have a Bath Uni FPL league - start one
Plan summer holidays/jobs well in advance, its the most time off you'll get in your life so take advantage.

        2. Be familiar with the material to be lectured on before you show up.
