Captain Sensible

Kane and Sterling headline Gameweek 3 captaincy debate

Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are the three teams being considered for the Gameweek 3 captaincy.

They face Bournemouth, Newcastle and Arsenal respectively, and the lack of clean sheet potential for each of those opponents has some Fantasy Premier League managers scratching their heads.

In one sense there is plenty of choice for the armband in Gameweek 3, but a spread of potentially viable options can also increase the risk of falling behind.

As ever, we have assessed all the candidates based on their individual form and the defensive capabilities of their upcoming opponents in Captain Sensible.

As this article includes data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 campaign can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Captain Poll results as of Thursday morning

Harry Kane (£11.0m) is the people’s choice for the Gameweek 3 captaincy after he won the latest poll.

The Spurs forward claimed a 38.8% share of the vote this week ahead of Newcastle’s trip to north London.

It seems likely that his backers were swayed more by his Gameweek 1 display than the largely anonymous outing against Manchester City.

That is completely understandable given a meeting with Aston Villa is likely to bear more resemblance to a clash with Newcastle than visiting the reigning Premier League champions.

Against Villa, Kane topped the Gameweek 1 charts for shots in the box and scored twice.

This week’s runner up is Raheem Sterling (£12.2m), as Manchester City prepare for an away match at Bournemouth.

The England international currently shares the summit of the Premier League goal-scoring charts with Norwich’s Teemu Pukki (£6.8m) on four goals, having failed to blank yet so far this season.

That has led to 29% of the voters in our poll backing Sterling for the Gameweek 3 captaincy.

Bournemouth are certainly favourable opposition too, having failed to keep a clean sheet in either of their 2019/20 matches.

Furthermore, both of these were against newly-promoted sides Sheffield United and Aston Villa. That should see Manchester City prove too much for the Cherries.

Salah’s stock has fallen somewhat after Liverpool’s poor display at Southampton

Some way off in third place in the poll is Liverpool midfielder Mohamed Salah (£12.5m).

The fixture is definitely a favourable one for Liverpool’s attackers given that Arsenal kept the fewest number of clean sheets, but the captain interest looks to be elsewhere.

While Sterling and Kane are both sitting on more than 30% in the poll, Salah has just 6% backing at the time of writing.

It seems likely that the Gameweek 2 blank, in which Liverpool were severely tested by Southampton, has played a part in this.

Just behind Salah in fourth place is Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne (£9.6m) who has a 3.8% share.

After a seven-point haul in Gameweek 1, the Belgian international registered two assists and maximum bonus the following weekend to take home 11 points.

De Bruyne’s creativity is the key factor in his appeal, as well as reliability of returns for someone who seems nailed-on in this Manchester City side.

De Bruyne is seen as the alternate Manchester City option at this stage

However, the fact that he is not viewed as much of an ‘explosive’ option compared to Sterling, is probably why on a handful of Fantasy managers are considering him for the Gameweek 3 captaincy.

Creeping into the conversation already is Pukki, who lit up the transfer market this week following his hat-trick against Newcastle.

3.4% of the voters believe that he can continue his hot form against a Chelsea side still searching for its first clean sheet of the season.

Another in-form option is Anthony Martial (£7.7m), who scored his second goal of the season against Wolves in Gameweek 2.

The returning Son Heung-min (£9.5m) has been selected by 2.3% in the poll, although what role he will play on Sunday afternoon remains to be seen.

Lucas Digne (£6.0m), Sadio Mané (£11.5m) and Marcus Rashford (£8.6m) are the only other assets with more than 1% support in the poll.

West ham to concede after 20 minutes, so either having 20 minutes of fun and hope or wait til sunday and pray for en an Ederrson howler (making a pen). Maybe King, if it were a tiny bit better fixture for the defender i would play defender but West ham never has great fixtures from a defensive pov.

    My WC team:

    ______
    ______ - AWB - Digne - ______
    KDB - Sterling - Mane - Martial
    Pukki - Jota

    4.0 - Lundstram - Cantwell - Wickham

It all comes down to this!

    A. Ederson + TAA + Soyunchu (3way rotation between Soyunchu, Lund and Cantwell)
    or
    B. Pope + VVD + Laporte

    Help a friend out! Cheers!

Keep coming back to this team. Is it stupid?
If/when Salah gets essential, I can downgrade Kane/firmino to him with a maximum of a -4

    Pope
    Mina, awb, zinc
    Sterling, kdb, martial, mount
    Kane(C), Firmino, Pukki

    Button, cantwell, lundstram, kelly

Please rate it. The defence is a bit iffy, but i reckon it can hold The line. Nice fixtures

      looks good

firmino is underrated, got 13 points which should have been higher. And he gets to shoot more, and while he will not probabbly match the two midfielders in points total there is one significant difference this year than seasons before. Firmino is now significantly cheaper than his team-mates, in which he has not been before, Salah wonder season he was about same price and Mané were priced similar last year. Those two have gone up, so in my view it change things abit. Wether to have him as the lone Liv attacker is debatable due to cap thing perhaps. Firmino will have his best season FPL wise this season barring injury.

While i understand the cap debate i think there is one perhaps not mentioned so often, Firmino tends to get bonus whenever he is delivering, while Salah and to a certain extent Mané don´t. Not that explosive though.

On a wc... good to go?

    Pope/Button
    KWP/Digne/Soyu/Zinch/Lund
    Mane/Sterling/KDB/Martial/McGinn
    Rash/Pukki/Martinelli

I’ve hovered between one alternative and that’s:

Kane/Lanzini/Mount/AWB instead of Mane/KWP/McGinn/Pukki, however I think that they will all score similar bar Pukki being a stronger score we than Mount in the long term, so why I went Mané instead of Kane. Thoughts?

    1. Arteta

I understand the logic behind your picks and would stick with the team you posted. I think that it's more important to have Salah/Mane than Kane.

      1. doowral
        • 11 Years
        4 years, 7 months ago

Agree. Haven't been impressed by Salah's underlying stats and Mane gets the nod as that £1m difference is crucial to the rest of the team. Whilst I think Kane may hurt me this week, I think the money goes a lot further when you're looking at strikers and some budget mids are decent picks to give it balance. The only thing I'd prefer is a Man U defender instead of KWP, however budget dictates.

    2. Warby84

Greenwood over martinelli as the latter will get more minutes (1pointers rather than 0)

Understand where you're coming from with that, the only thing holding me back is with Rash & Martial, the move I'd make if Zinch got dropped would be to AWB so need to keep a Man U spot for that. With two decent bench options he'd always be 3rd for me.

I think they might. Very small sample size of course, but Brighton have the lowest xG conceded in the league so far which is encouraging. I don't particularly trust Leicester defensively either, I don't rate Schmeichel very highly and can see them conceding goals even if their defensive stats are solid (as has been the case in the past).

I find that rarely works out and just leads to -4 and -8 hits down the line when rest of the team needs fixing. Hurts even more when the expected 13x2 point banker turns into a blank!

Who do you think will find form and step up to score big this GW, and why?

Maybe someone who hasn't had a double digit score in a while, who has a series of no attacking returns, or has very low ownership.

Do you think it will be an already-established name in many of our sides or someone who is a major differential?

Have you seen something in a someone's play or in their stats to make you think they could be ready for a breakout GW?

I really hope so, taken a -0.1 on the chin as I'm convinced he can come good. The signs in the Chelsea game were positive, lets hope The Blades go for it and leave space behind their overlapping centre backs!

Unfortunately, Sheff U were the most solid defensive team in the Championship last year, and one of the strongest in the first two weeks of the season.

There's a more defensive emphasis for them in the top division too, and Leicester's attack have hardly set the world alight in the first couple of weeks.

There is no space behind the centre backs because the players rotate positionally.

That's what worries me to be honest, Sheffield United might provide a lot of attacking disappointment for players this season. I'm prepared to wait and see for this game, possibly next week as well if it looks like Leicester are getting it together. If not then I'm going to be left behind and looking to the next curve beyond Pukki, Martial & KDB.

His accuracy has been off first 2 games, but the chances were there, he’s close to the top of every midfielder table except “on target”. Playing a very weak defence.

Conclusions in the article yesterday are upside down.

Keep Perez. Not worth -4 for Martial if he ain't had any bonus points yet.

If you did not have KDB then -4 for him would not be as risky.

You have a spine of Sslah, Sterling and KDB.
