Scout Squad

The Scout Squad picks for FPL Gameweek 4

The weekly precursor to the Scout Picks article returns ahead of Gameweek 4.

In this piece, our four regular panelists – editorial staff Paul, David, Geoff and Neale – each submit an 18-man squad of Fantasy assets (with the focus on the coming Gameweek) and elaborate on their notable inclusions/omissions.

The 72 nominations listed below will then be narrowed down to a squad of 14 (with the starting XI not exceeding a total cost of £83m) ahead of the Gameweek 4 deadline at 11:30 BST on Saturday morning.

As we discussed last week, we are making some slight tweaks to the way we do Scout Squad and Scout Picks this season.

We have placed stricter regulations on our panelists: there are requirements for at least one £4.5m goalkeeper, at least one £4.5m or cheaper defender, at least one midfielder priced £6.0m or below and at least one forward priced at £7.0m or lower.

As was the case last year, each panelist is restricted to no more than three players from the same team.

We will also be adding a captaincy to the Scout Picks this season, with details of that revealed on Friday.

DAVID SAID…

Tom Heaton and Rui Patricio are perhaps left-field selections in the goalkeeper bracket but I fancy the clean sheet potential of their fixtures.

Crystal Palace scored the fewest home goals of any side that survived relegation last season, and looked similarly shy going forward in the first two matches of this campaign.

Meanwhile, Everton are really struggling to find the net in 2019/20, and are sure to meet a stiff Wolves defence, perhaps sitting deep having played European football a few days previously.

That’s why I’ve also included Conor Coady, the least likely Wolves defender to be rotated, and Frederic Guilbert, who impressed hugely for Aston Villa in Gameweek 3.

No Manchester City player created as many chances as Oleksandr Zinchenko against Bournemouth to encourage my interest in the left-back.

With Brighton’s attack unlikely to trouble the defending champions at the Etihad Stadium, could we be looking at a double-figure haul for Zinchenko?

Raheem Sterling should also do well against the Seagulls having scored in each of his matches so far this season, and displaying underlying statistics that indicate his form is sustainable.

I welcome Mohamed Salah back into my Scout Squad submission after foolishly doubting him in Gameweek 3. He might have a tough fixture at Burnley but if there’s any Liverpool player who can break the deadlock when not fatigued from European extra-time, it’s him.

Manuel Lanzini comes in as my West Ham midfielder as the obliging Norwich defence awaits. He has created more chances than any of his colleagues so far this season.

Meanwhile, Todd Cantwell also gets in as the Hammers defence doesn’t fill me with confidence either.

Sergio Aguero looked back to his vintage best in the recent win over Bournemouth and the injury to Gabriel Jesus has allowed him the freedom to more time on the pitch.

If I think that Sterling will impress against Brighton, then surely his more experienced forward colleague will too.

Teemu Pukki has become something of an auto-include at this point given his underlying data, while I can see goals in the north London derby for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

NEALE SAID…

The clean sheets will come eventually, either before the international break or after it.

But while there is a general dearth of shut-outs, it makes sense to back defenders who pose a threat at the other end of the pitch and who can compensate for any goals conceded with an attacking return or two.

Lucas Digne and Trent Alexander-Arnold‘s offensive qualities are well-documented but Emerson Palmieri is keeping pace with the pair of them this season: no FPL defender has had more goal attempts or shots on target than the Chelsea left-back.

Sheffield United’s backline has impressed me so far but I can’t seem them being the prolific scorers that Norwich are this season and indeed only two clubs have recorded fewer shots in the box than the Blades after three Gameweeks of 2019/20.

I can see a mentally spent Wolves side having to soak up a lot of pressure at Goodison Park on Sunday but Everton are far from prolific in front of goal, so if Nuno Espirito Santo’s side can do what Palace and Villa have managed and prevent the Toffees from scoring, then Willy Boly‘s bonus point magnetism could see him top-score on Merseyside.

There’ll be few sane Fantasy managers interested in a Watford defender given their ongoing struggles at the back but in Newcastle United, Javi Gracia’s troops face a club posing little goal threat (joint-second-bottom for big chances) and with numerous injury concerns going into Saturday’s match.

Matt Ritchie and Jetro Willems are both doubts, which could bode well for Kiko Femenia down the Watford right – the Hornets’ full-back is better going forward and no sub-£5.0m defender has registered as many penalty box touches so far this season.

A Manchester City triple-up speaks for itself, while Teemu Pukki and Sebastien Haller ought to get some joy out of each other’s defence: neither West Ham nor Norwich have kept a clean sheet so far this season and the two clubs have already shipped a combined 15 goals.

With Anthony Martial an injury doubt for Gameweek 4, a United positional rejig could see Marcus Rashford move up front and Daniel James shifted to the left flank at St. Mary’s.

The former Swansea City winger looks better (to me) on the left wing and his goal against Palace indeed arrived after he had swapped sides.

Outside of City and Liverpool assets, no FPL midfielder has had more shots from inside the box than James this season.

PAUL SAID…

A triple up on Manchester City looks advisable for the visit of Brighton on Saturday afternoon.

Although I expect Sergio Aguero to add to his weekend brace at Bournemouth, the value offered by the cheaper Kevin De Bruyne means it’s hard to look past a double-up on the champions’ midfield when assessing their attack.

Goals should also be expected when West Ham and Norwich to head-to-head – both sides are among the bottom four defences for shots conceded in the box.

In terms of differentials, Chelsea’s Emerson Palmieri is a standout pick at home to Sheffield United.

Compared with other FPL defenders, no one has bettered his six shots on goal, while the Italy international’s four efforts on target is a leading figure.

Daniel James sits in less than 4% of squads for his trip to Southampton.

Yet the Manchester United winger has fired six shots inside the box – more than any team-mate – and has scored in all but one of the opening three Gameweeks.

Roberto Firmino is another relatively overlooked option.

The Brazilian is only the sixth most popular Liverpool player in FPL, despite firing more shots (12) and efforts in the box (nine) than any team-mate.

He also has a fine record against his weekend hosts, Burnley, scoring three goals in their two meetings last season.

GEOFF SAID…

Looking for a first clean sheet of the season, Kepa Arrizabalaga hosts Sheffield United in Gameweek 4.

With Nathan Redmond possibly out of the Southampton team, David de Gea has a good chance for a shut-out on the south coast.

Tom Heaton is my final goalkeeper choice, facing a Crystal Palace side who beat Manchester United but then drew a blank against Colchester United on Tuesday evening.

If Liverpool can see off the threat of Ashely Barnes, Trent Alexander-Arnold could be poised for a big score with his strong attacking threat.

Second for both crosses and attempts from a defender, Lucas Digne could be in line for attacking points.

Emerson Palmieri is another looking like collecting attacking returns and the Blades offer a prime opportunity.

Caglar Soyuncu and Martin Kelly round out my defensive picks, both at a nice price with favourable home fixtures.

Little needs to be said about either Raheem Sterling or Mohamed Salah. Kevin De Bruyne has an assist in every game this season and I back him to continue that at home to Brighton.

I expect Mason Mount to recover in time for the weekend and continue his run of form, while Todd Cantwell is a nice enabler who is delivering the goods at present.

In attack I’ve gone for Sergio Aguero, indicating my strong belief in Manchester City’s potential this week.

Sebastian Haller has looked strong so far in the Premier League and could feast against a shaky Norwich defence.

I’m backing Jamie Vardy to continue where he left off in GW3 at home to Bournemouth, who have yet to keep a clean sheet.

Teemu Pukki has form strongly on his side and until that looks like stopping he is impossible to ignore.

Finally, I see Marcus Rashford bouncing back from his Gameweek 3 penalty miss. If he’d scored it, he would have recorded attacking returns in three straight matches – and whether Martial is fit for the weekend or not, I see Rashford scoring well.

THE COMMUNITY CHAMPION

Before most Gameweeks, we nominate a Fantasy manager to challenge our Scout Picks with a starting XI of their own.

The Community Champion who has the biggest lead over the Scouts during 2019/20 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

The Community Champion for Gameweek 4 is InsaneFC, who recorded a best-ever finish of 331st in 2015/16.

Last week, FPL Mike the Knight beat the Scout Picks 46-44.

Hot Toddy‘s winning margin of ten points (69-59) in Gameweek 2 is the one to beat so far.

How does this WC team look?

    Pope Woodman
    TAA Zinch 4.5 4.5. Kelly
Salah Sterling Mount Cantwell Douglas Luiz
    Pukki Aguero Haller

Which two 4.5 defenders are the best options? Perhaps Lowton and Soyuncu?

It’s close to my wildcard draft but my defence is better. So yea I like it I guess just relying on Cantwell rotation every week is but risky u know. He looks great currently but for how long idk

        Cheers for the input.

My current WC team looks like this:

        Pope Woodman
        Taa Zinch Digne Maguire Kelly
        Salah Sterling KDB Mount Cantwell
        Pukki Haller Greenwood

Which team looks better of the two? Long term this second option looks more solid, but it's just darned tempting to pick Kun and captaining him for this GW as his ownership is low.

Maguire is overkill. Get Lund and keep the rest in the bank. Play 3-5-2 (yes, start Cantwell) until there's a strong reason to downgrade Haller's price point or upgrade Greenwood/Mount/Cantwell's price points

You'd need that money ITB as the template shifts between now and your next available WC

Kelly and Lund can alternate as first sub depending on fixtures until one stops being a starter, then money ITB comes in again for an upgrade

Oh. I also prefer this (with the few tweaks I mentioned) to the Aguero team. That's a lot of sacrifice for one premium striker, and we've already seen that lead to numerous facepalms in GW3

People will outscore you every GW, as someone always caps the highest points scorer. Having a better TEAM helps overall

Great wc team and agree on your two 4.5 def.

Still unsure Cantwell is a 4th mid so have an exit plan as Norwich could fade. For now it’s fine and that’s my only concern

Cheers! Good point, I posted my alternative WC squad above. I just have a feeling that captaining Kun this GW could be massively rewarding, looking at his current ownership, but also need to be more forward looking..

I just feel if you are on wc kun is a must as then non wild carders will struggle to get him in. You’ve then got yourself on peach of a deferential in a way. One of the prem leagues best ever strikers for the prem best ever attacking team in form with awesome fixtures

Do you have a plan for Aguero? Because a WC team this early should have at least the next 5 games in mind or more. And he will share game time with Jesus after this weekend.

Hm, Kun is very tempting indeed. Gone for him myself, but instead of Sterling, that gives me better overall team. I´ve gone KDB and Kun and i think that covers City well next 3 games. Problem with having both Kun and Sterling in your team it takes away your defense and also better rotation up front. Downside og Kun is that Jesus is coming back so might not be long term as Sterling is. I think having one or two defenders in 5.5 price point bracket is wise, and that is impossible alongside TAA and the expensive City attackers. So, KDB and Sterling long term, or Kun and KDB short term. Depends where you are in ranking and playing style. I´ve gone a bit behind so going Kun now to try and get in front of the curve. Maguire... eh, for me Eve or Matip, perhaps.

  2. FOO FIGHTER

The only viable way getting Kun into my team is KDB and Haller out for Aguero and 5.0m midfielder cough cough. To fix the 5.0m midfielder I will need to get rid of TAA.

5.0m midfielders are fodder. I will have Kun yes but I will be making my team weak, really weak.

Otherwise I can go the route of a fodder defence. I really do not see the logic in getting Kun in. Salah and Sterling both not going anywhere as it will come back to bite me. Salah and Sterling as a combo trump Kun.

So as much as I do want Kun for his hauls, I am not going to do my head anymore to see me losing at least 3 haulers for 1.

I'm in the exact same situation. Capping Kun next GW could be rewarding, as his ownership is still relatively low, but longer term the KDB/Haller option is probably the way to go.

Adrian will get better and had not have any proper pre-season nor much training with his defense. So, logic is, they have not been good like last year but still just 1 goal each game, Adrian gets more adjusted and Alison back. Next 3 out of 4 is cs potential, and watching Liverpool vs Arsenal i would not write of cs vs Chelsea even. Apart from the latter mentioned all the three other opponents are goal shy. Liverpool will click into gear and then they will be much more solid.

    Let's talk Che Adams.

9th highest xG and 0.43xA too...has he just been unlucky and goals imminent, or is there other reasoning?

Championship performance the last two seasons he has notably exceeded his xG (22g>18.2xg, 15g>12.07xg) which would suggest he is a quality finisher not just a benteke.

Was stationed on the right of front three last week but more likely to be in a two up at the very least while redmond out (and started ahead of ings there gw2).

I'm not suggesting premium scores, but interested in people's thoughts based on the underlying stats given if he'd converted two of those chances he'd very much be on the radar...

If I had him I’d hold, nothing around that price which is appealing unless there is money itb to get to haller, pukki, Barnes

However I wouldn’t be buying him but I still think he is the best 6m striker on offer currently

I'm convinced there must be value in the 6m striker category still (many now 5.9): joelinton, Wesley, mcburnie, maupay, adams, ings... All could in theory do the business of 130-140 points which is all you're looking at for that price

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years
          4 years, 7 months ago

That's the theory. Also how I expect 7.5s to turn out quite well eventually. Problem is that the market isn't that patient, so prices will drop until someone with promise starts delivering... And that's when I buy

I have him and I am selling tonight. (Having done Perez to Cantwell) I am upgrading him to Haller.

He has less attempts (6) as well as less attempts in box (5) than either of Maupay, Joelinton, Deulofeu and Barnes.and not a single one of those were on target.

We all know every championship striker delivers less in PL and I was ready for that. However, with his upcoming schedule, there is no way I am keeping him just for the sake of GW5 and GW6 when his price drops.

    Here’s a tricky one:

    1) robbo(6.9) Soyuncu/other(4.5) surridge(4.4)
    2) TAA(7.0) rico/kelly(4.0/4.1) Greenwood (4.5)

Would you opt for the non playing striker to allow for a better defender option

Kelly’s time is surely limited - fixtures suck mid term anyhow

Greenwood may get some minutes but is rarely going to be anything other than 3rd sub unless OGS starts increasing his game time

How would you use this free transfer?

    A. Martial >>.Mount (if Martial is out only)

    B. Dendonker >> Cantwell

    C. Jota >> Barnes

    D. Robertson >> Zinchenko and Dendonker >> Mount -4

Let me know what you think!

Woodman Dendocker Rico Montoya 0.3 ITB 0FT WC available

Nice moves, kun can repay the hit with captaincy. Greenwood isn’t great but seems most teams are relying on a 4.5 player this week

Yeah - the prospect of a relatively differential Kun captain at home to Brighton with no Jesus or international football was just too good to turn down.

I’m contemplating a transfer which I’d really appreciate a second opinion on:

Move from 4-4-2 to a 3-5-2 and give up on the Liverpool def double up (keeping TAA).

VVD, Dendoncker > Lanzini, 4.0 fodder

Caveat is that it requires a hit (-4).

Benefit is that I release funds to afford King>Barnes next Gamweek.

    Thoughts?

Save and asses next week. VVD is as likely to get a clean as Lanzini an attacking return imo, so the hit doesn’t make sense

Yeh I think the whole term 'fighting fires' applies to Pukki. Just get him in and that's a spot up front you'll probably not have to change for a while. The guy scores goals, great pick alongside a consistent premium potentially if your that way inclined.

Got in Pukki myself this week after missing his opening blockbuster.

Getting on the Pukki bandwagon helped me get a really good score GW3. I do not expect him to score every game but that is why I have points spread over my team when he doesn't.

Current teams on a -4 this week:

    Heaton
    Robbo Zinc Digne Lundy
    Sterling(C) Salah Mount Lanzini
    Kane Pukki

Gtg? Have Greenwood, Rico and Dendonker on bench that could come in for Lundy? Tempted to play Greenwood if pressers gives us a better hint.

Don't you think that Wood is worth of investment now, when he is 6.3? he's definitely going to score very soon and the difference between him and Barnes shouldn't be that big.

Not sure whether my wildcard should have a starting 11 of Laporte and Cantwell or Barnes and Soyuncu?

Concerned about Norwich double up of Pukki and Cantwell but City have some great fixtures for clean sheets for Laporte.

Interesting. Not seen one that fits 4 top tier mids in.
Defence looks too weak though for my liking.
Matip looked good. Will pick up some BAPs and maybe a couple more goals over season but he is most under threat long term.
Lundstram is decent and I think he looks pretty safe in a side who are no whipping boys.
Kelly doesn't offer much long term security though.
Mane to Mount or even Son or Pepe (if you monitor them over next few weeks) would allow you to get in Digne or a better defender.

Not bad but high risk. You could always swap Ewerson with Pope if you want to upgrade one of your defenders.
