Importance of holding your nerve ahead of international breaks

Gameweek 3 was another weekend of clean sheet wipe-outs. Nick Pope’s in the 96th minute against Wolves was the most painful of all. Only FPL would have you sweating over a Burnley clean sheet on a Sunday afternoon.

In the last two Gameweeks, there’s been just five clean sheets out of a possible 40. Managers who invested heavily in defence are getting frustrated and impatient with their backlines.

Patience is likely to be rewarded though. Manchester City (who have just one clean sheet so far) face Brighton, Norwich and Watford next while Liverpool (who are yet to register a shutout) play Burnley and Newcastle in their next two matches.

Shipping the likes of Andrew Robertson (£6.9m) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.5m) could come back to bite you over the next few games. Give them time to deliver, it’s only been three weeks.

Going into an international break is a good time to save a transfer if you can (unless you plan to activate the Wildcard during the break). If you don’t have any major fires to fight in your squad, sit on your hands this week and look forward to having two frees for Gameweek 5.

Injuries often occur during internationals (most of which turn out to be nothing more than a sore toe) but it is comforting having those two frees available if you do get unlucky with a few knocks.

Two weeks is a long time in FPL, a lot can go wrong. In my case, I’d love to ship the disappointing Diogo Jota (£6.4m) out this week but I value the two frees for Gameweek 5 more than any of the replacements I can get for the Wolves man.

Anthony Martial (£7.7m) owners may want to ship him this week if he’s ruled out of the Southampton game by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (his press conference is on Friday). If it’s not a long-term injury however, he could just be put on your bench for Gameweek 4 if you have a decent replacement to save you a precious transfer.

Mason Greenwood (£4.5m) is on a lot of benches and he could get a start if Martial misses out. The youngster played 34 minutes in the defeat to Crystal Palace last weekend. Hopefully, Solskjaer will have us Fantasy managers in mind in Friday’s press conference and make things clear, something like “Anthony is out, Mason will start” would be great Ole.

There is probably one player this week I’d favour bringing in as opposed to saving the transfer and that’s Teemu Pukki (£7.0m). If you don’t have him yet, don’t avoid him out of stubbornness. I learned that lesson during Leicester’s title-winning season refusing to bring in Jamie Vardy (£8.9m).

Pukki faces a West Ham side yet to keep a clean sheet. With his high ownership, he will hurt your rank again this weekend if he continues his excellent form and his price will continue to rise during the break. This is not one to overthink.

What is up with Spurs? They looked devoid of ideas in trying to break Newcastle down last week. It’s not a rosy camp at present which is not good for their FPL prospects. Until the Christian Eriksen (£8.9m) saga comes to an end, avoiding Spurs players may be the best thing to do. It’s very odd that Jan Vertonghen (£5.3m) is not getting starts too. He’s their best defender. Harry Kane (£11.1m) owners were left frustrated against the Magpies but I can see him doing well against Arsenal so it might be worth giving him one more week at least.

Like Spurs, Manchester United slipped to a shock defeat in Gameweek 3, turned over by Crystal Palace at Old Trafford. United assets were the talk of the town last week in Wildcard squads, but that enthusiasm has quickly died off. As a United fan, having watched the Palace game, Martial and Marcus Rashford (£8.7m) are the only two options on my Watchlist and even at that, I worry about where the service is going to come from.

Good luck in Gameweek 4 and enjoy the international break. It’s a good time to take stock of what has happened over the first four Gameweeks. Use the extra time to good effect.

Lessons learned from Gameweek 3

    I don't like situations like this one with Martial. Knowing for how long he will be out would so great. If this is only one game - you keep him, if more transfer him out. The worst that can happen is that we keep him and before the next game Ole says he's still not able to play...

    I demand that every club has to officially report any injury to FA and the list is public! For the sake of all Fantasy managers!

      Ole has a presser tomorrow I'm sure he'll give an update on the timescale.

      Ha tell me about it - I am vainly hoping that OGS gives us something re. length of time out tomorrow but I know the reality is that he either has no idea or will deliberately not give anything away and we will be none the wiser.

      One thing to bear in mind is this is not likeyl to be the last time Martial gets injured so it could still pay to ship him for now to a more secure in form asset (a la Mount)

        I already have Mount and searching for options in this price bracket but can't find any stand out options. I would want Martial for the whole season I guess unless Man United hit a really bad form so I think I'm keeping no doubt

        Will Lampard risk Mount if he's been carrying an injury? Has already said he probably won't play him every week

                He might have shaken off the injury but I'd still say there is some risk that he is on the bench, depends how much he has trained this week I guess.. but you are right Lampard did say that before the Leicester/Norwich games so maybe we can ignore that now!

      Safe and reasonable to do Perez > Mount for free after seeing Mount in CHE training? Perez against BOU or any other team should not matter with these performances?

      Torn between the measured approach and taking a hit to improve the team now. Plan to wait to see if OGS gives better info re. length of time Martial is out but, assuming he doesn't give us anything, which would you do?

      A) Martial > Mount (FT 1.5itb)
      B) Martial, Jota > Mount, Haller (-4, 0.5itb)
      C) Martial, Dendo > Mount, Cantwell (-4, 1.3itb)
      D) Save FT and play Dendo or Greenwood

      1FT 0.1itb
      Heaton
      VVD, Digne, Zinch, AWB
      Salah, Sterling (C), KDB, Martial*
      Pukki, Jota*
      (Button) (Greenwood, Dendo*, Lunds)

      Cheers 🙂

          Trouble is I don’t think we’ll be given the luxury of knowing how long he’s out for before deadline

          You reckon Greenwood a better bet than Dendo if I do go down that route though?

          You think Jota will come good still? He is frustrating to watch in the PL as he clearly has the ability to do brilliantly but just doesn’t seem to be firing

            I’ve got a very similar team to you - got no immediate plans to get rid of Jota - he will come good (but Europe is clearly not helping)

            I’d be tempted to punt on Greenwood over Dendo

      Pope
      AWB Digne VVD
      Salah Sterling Cantwell Mount
      Greenwood Pukki Kane

      Button Martial Lundstrom, Rico
      0FT, 0.7 ITB. Is it a bad idea to use my free hit already and do this:
      VVD > Kelly
      Martial > KDB
      Kane > Aguero
      Pope > Adrian/Pickford/DDG

        Nice. Belgium is a very underrated trip actually. Spa is in a fairly rural/forest part so do look around the Ardennes forest if you have a day. Personally I like Flemish Belgium to the North West. Ghent and Antwerp are very pleasant cities with good food, culture and so on - obviously the beer is the best in the world hands down.

      Robbo, Digne, Guilbert, Lundstram, Rico;
      Sterling, Salah, Perez, Martial, Donk;
      Kane, Pukki, Greenwood.

      I could hold on till after international break but don't see much point in that if I'm already on a -4. The only annoying thing is price rises to players like Cantwell and co. who I'd definitely bring in.

        Why WC this team? How many players would you ditch?
        I know ppl are disapointed about Kane, but he can do well against Arsenal.

          I'd get rid of Heaton, Perez, Martial, Donk and Kane.

          Don't like Kane. Worried about lack of City coverage, and there are players who I think could punish me like Haller. I will probably hold on to the WC just because I think it'd be a waste of squad value as I had Robbo, Jota, Perez who had all dropped in value.

        Not far off my team and I would not WC. Kane can easily score against Arsenal and has a plum fixture the following game. Use Donk or Greenwood over Martial.

          Yeah think I will do that, thanks. Would be great news if Rico starts to play again for the injured Daniels.

          I'm not sure Palace at home is a plum fixture for Kane, Palace are better away and Spurs could have the same problems as the Newcastle game breaking them down.

      Have following options:

      1. Play Lund - not the end of the world tbh, keep Martial;
      2. Martial to DSilva -4;
      3. Martial to Mount/James -4 and some cash itb for further moves.

      Best one?

        He is still work keeping if the injury is not long term IMO

      Bench one out of these:

      A. Lundstram
      B. Cantwell
      C. CWilson

      I'm leaning towards CWilson since he blanked against Forrest Green Rovers. But feels wrong to play budget def and mid ahead of CWilson. Thoughts?

      Interesting that those that want to WC after IB and need some points from Man City and already have Sterling, but not KDB should consider Martial to D.Silva and then WC.

          I know but makes me think this is why he could play. When City won the league in GW38 he was unplayable against Brighton and showed similar form in GW1 this season. Major differential I know.

      D.James could be a cracking differential. Already has the most shots on goal in the Utd side.

        Perez imo. Type if price point yo end up holding onto because always something more important. Lanzini Mount Mcginn Maddi Trossard all better and season keepers
