The FPL line-up lessons we learned from Gameweek 3

We take our regular look back at the Premier League line-ups from the weekend just gone, analysing the systems and personnel used by the 20 top-flight clubs in Gameweek 3 and seeing what lessons could be learned for the weekend to come.

Arsenal

Arsenal XI (4-4-2 diamond): Leno; Monreal, D Luiz, Sokratis, Maitland-Niles; Willock (Lacazette 81′), Xhaka, Guendouzi (Mkhitaryan 86′); Ceballos (Torreira 61′); Aubameyang, Pépé.

Starting XI changes made: 2 (both unenforced)
Total starting XI changes in 2019/20: 5
Unchanged starting XIs in 2019/20: 0/2
Ever-present starters: Leno, Maitland-Niles, Sokratis, Maitland-Niles, Willock, Guendouzi, Aubameyang.

Nicolas Pepe made his first start of the season, while Granit Xhaka returned from injury in central midfield.

Alexandre Lacazette and Reiss Nelson both dropped to the bench.

Those alterations led to the first Arsenal formation change of the season, with Unai Emery switching from a 4-2-3-1 to a more defensive 4-3-1-2/4-4-2 diamond.

Xhaka was at the base of the midfield four, with Matteo Guendouzi and Joe Willock either side of him and Dani Ceballos at the tip of the diamond.

Pepe, therefore, was deployed up front with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The back four was unchanged from Gameweek 2.

The 4-3-1-2/4-4-2 diamond was a system Emery sporadically used in matches against the ‘big six’ last season, so it could be that we see that system again in the north London derby – although the fact that the Gunners are on home soil could see the Arsenal boss show more ambition and reinstate Lacazette.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa XI (4-1-4-1): Heaton; Taylor, Mings, Engels, Guilbert; Luiz; Jota (El Ghazi 77′), McGinn, Grealish, Trezeguet (El Mohamady 86′); Wesley.

Starting XI changes made: 2 (both unenforced)
Total starting XI changes in 2019/20: 3
Unchanged starting XIs in 2019/20: 0/2
Ever-present starters: Heaton, Taylor, Mings, Engels, McGinn, Grealish, Trezeguet, Wesley.

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith made two changes from the side that lost to Bournemouth in Gameweek 2, with Frederic Guilbert replacing Ahmed El Mohamady at right-back and Jota brought into the side further up the flank.

Anwar El Ghazi dropped to the bench, with Trezeguet moving over to the left wing.

The spine of Villa’s side looks relatively settled, with goalkeeper Tom Heaton, centre-backs Tyrone Mings and Bjorn Engels, midfielders John McGinn and Jack Grealish, and striker Wesley having started all three games so far.

Conor Hourihane seems to be the fall-guy from Douglas Luiz‘s arrival, with the former Manchester City man having started the last two league matches at the base of the midfield.

Bournemouth

Bournemouth XI (5-4-1): Ramsdale; Daniels (H Wilson 37′), Aké, S Cook, Mepham, A Smith (Ibe 68′); Fraser, Billing, Lerma, King; C Wilson (Solanke 69′).

Starting XI changes made: 1 (unenforced)
Total starting XI changes in 2019/20: 3
Unchanged starting XIs in 2019/20: 0/2
Ever-present starters: Ramsdale, Aké, S Cook, A Smith, Fraser, Billing, Lerma, King, C Wilson.

As anticipated and indeed as they had done last season, Bournemouth reverted to a five-man backline for the visit of the champions.

Chris Mepham was brought in as the extra centre-half, with Harry Wilson the man to make way.

An injury to Charlie Daniels prompted a reshuffle of personnel but not system: Harry Wilson was brought on and deployed on the right wing, with Joshua King switching flanks and Ryan Fraser dropping back to left wing-back.

It was interesting that substitute Diego Rico was overlooked, despite being an obvious replacement for Daniels off the bench.

The Cherries may well switch back to a 4-4-2 this weekend, however, which could be to Rico’s advantage – although one of Ake or Adam Smith could just as easily shift over to left-back.

Brighton and Hove Albion

Brighton XI (3-4-3): Ryan; Burn, Dunk, Duffy; March (Locadia 68′), Stephens (Groß 78′), Pröpper, Montoya; Trossard, Andone, Maupay (Murray 74′).

Starting XI changes made: 2 (both unenforced)
Total starting XI changes in 2019/20: 3
Unchanged starting XIs in 2019/20: 0/2
Ever-present starters: Ryan, Burn, Dunk, Duffy, March, Stephens, Pröpper, Montoya.

Rotation continued in the front three for Brighton, with Graham Potter’s two changes seeing Florin Andone and Neal Maupay start over Glenn Murray and Pascal Gross.

Not one of the Seagulls’ forwards has started all three Premier League games this season.

The eight men behind the attacking trident are all ever-presents, by contrast.

Maupay was stationed on the right of the front three, with Leandro Trossard resuming his left-wing role and Andone leading the line.

A red card for Andone didn’t change a great deal, with Trossard and Maupay playing closer together in a 3-4-2.

Potter rotated all 11 starters in the EFL Cup in midweek.

Burnley

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Pope, Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Pieters, Gudmundsson (Lennon 75), Cork, Westwood, McNeil (Hendrick 86′), Barnes (Rodriguez 78′), Wood.

Starting XI changes made: 0

Unchanged starting XIs in 2019/20: 2/2
Ever-present starters: Pope, Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Pieters, Gudmundsson, Cork, Westwood, McNeil, Barnes, Wood.

Sean Dyche’s starting XIs have been among the most predictable over the years, especially when things are going well, and that has indeed transpired this season, too.

Burnley were unchanged for the third game running, with Dyche again resisting the urge to crowbar an extra central midfielder into his side for added protection against tough opposition and instead deciding to line up with his tried-and-tested 4-4-2.

Dyche may be forced into a change against Liverpool this weekend, however, with Johann Berg Gudmundsson having limped off with a calf problem – the Icelandic winger only has an “outside chance” of featuring in Gameweek 4.

Chelsea

Chelsea XI (4-2-3-1): Kepa; Azpilicueta, Christensen, Zouma, Emerson; Jorginho, Kovacic; Pulisic (Willian 84′), Barkley, Mount (Alonso 90′); Abraham (Giroud 75).

Starting XI changes made: 3 (1 unenforced)

Ever-present starters: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Christensen, Zouma, Emerson, Jorginho, Mount

Frank Lampard had originally made two changes to his Chelsea side for the trip to Norwich, with Tammy Abraham and Mateo Kovacic in for Olivier Giroud and the injured N’Golo Kante, but an injury sustained by Pedro in the warm-up meant that Ross Barkley was promoted to the first team.

Barkley’s inclusion in ‘the hole’ saw Mount move over to the left flank, with Pulisic deputising for Pedro on the right of a 4-2-3-1 – the same system Lampard used in Gameweeks 1 and 2 (although a 4-3-3 was rolled out in the Super Cup).

Lampard’s back four was unchanged for the third match in a row with Antonio Rudiger still not fit.

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Guaita; Ward, Cahill, Kelly, van Aanholt; Milivojevic, Kouyate (McCarthy 83′), McArthur; Zaha, Ayew (Benteke 75′), Schlupp (Townsend 80′).

Starting XI changes made: 4 (all unenforced)
Total starting XI changes in 2019/20: 5
Unchanged starting XIs in 2019/20: 0/2
Ever-present starters: Guaita, Ward, Kelly, van Aanholt, Milivojevic, McArthur.

Roy Hodgson abandoned the 4-4-2 of Gameweeks 1 and 2 in favour of a 4-3-3, which became a 4-5-1 out of possession.

Wilfried Zaha – on the right wing – and Jeffrey Schlupp were chosen to flank Jordan Ayew in attack.

Ayew and Schlupp were two of four players brought into the team, with debutant Gary Cahill and Cheikhou Kouyate also starting.

Andros Townsend, Christian Benteke, Max Meyer and Scott Dann all dropped to the bench and subsequently started in the EFL Cup in midweek.

Budget FPL defender Martin Kelly kept his place alongside Cahill at centre-half.

Everton

Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Digne, Mina, Keane, Coleman; Gomes, Schneiderlin; Bernard (Kean 62′), Sigurdsson (Iwobi 61′), Richarlison (Walcott 78′); Calvert-Lewin.

Starting XI changes made: 1 (enforced)

Unchanged starting XIs in 2019/20: 0/2
Ever-present starters: Pickford, Digne, Mina, Keane, Coleman, Gomes, Bernard, Sigurdsson, Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin.

Marco Silva’s only alteration saw Morgan Schneiderlin return from a ban in place of Jean-Philippe Gbamin, who it later transpired would be out for two months with a thigh injury – although the change may have been made anyway.

Silva has been patient with his other new signings so far and there was again no start for Moise Kean, Alex Iwobi or Djibril Sidibe, although Kean and Iwobi are building match-fitness by the week and both had half-hour run-outs at Villa Park – so Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Everton’s three attacking midfielders behind him will soon be at risk of possible rotation.

The Schneiderlin-Gbamin hokey-cokey is the only change Silva has made this season but Friday’s result may be a test of his loyalty.

Everton’s back four looks relatively settled, with Sidibe not yet tasting a single minute of Premier League football.

Leicester City

Leicester City XI (4-3-3): Schmeichel; Pereira, Soyuncu, Evans, Fuchs; Tielemans (Mendy 89′), Choudhury, Praet (Barnes 64′); Perez (Morgan 77′), Vardy, Maddison.

Ever-present starters: Schmeichel, Pereira, Soyuncu, Evans, Tielemans, Choudhury, Perez, Vardy, Maddison.

Brendan Rodgers made just one change to the Leicester side that drew 1-1 at Chelsea, with Dennis Praet replacing the injured Wilfred Ndidi.

Both of Rodgers’ changes so far this season have been enforced, with Christian Fuchs having replaced the injured Ben Chilwell at Stamford Bridge.

Fuchs again deputised at left-back at Bramall Lane.

Harvey Barnes‘ introduction for Praet midway through the second half saw the substitute take up a left-wing role, with James Maddison moving infield.

Maddison and Ayoze Perez had again started the game either side of Jamie Vardy in a 4-3-3.

Liverpool

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Adrian; Robertson, van Dijk, Matip, Alexander-Arnold; Wijnaldum (Milner 69′), Fabinho, Henderson; Mané (Oxlade-Chamberlain 77′), Firmino (Lallana 86′), Salah.

Starting XI changes made: 2 (both unenforced)
Total starting XI changes in 2019/20: 7
Unchanged starting XIs in 2019/20: 0/2
Ever-present starters: Alexander-Arnold, Robertson, van Dijk, Wijnaldum, Firmino, Salah.

Fabinho and Jordan Henderson came into the Liverpool midfield, with James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain making way.

Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum flanked Fabinho in central midfield, with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane stationed, as usual, either side of Roberto Firmino in attack.

Joel Matip got the nod over Joe Gomez at centre-half for the second Gameweek in a row, having also lined up alongside Virgil van Dijk in the Super Cup.

The 4-3-3 system looks as settled as ever, with the brief 4-2-3-1 experiment of last season not seen in 2019/20 so far.

Manchester City

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Zinchenko, Laporte, Otamendi, Walker (Cancelo 90′); D Silva, Gündogan (Rodri 58′), De Bruyne; Sterling, Aguero, B Silva (Mahrez 79′).

Ever-present starters: Ederson, Zinchenko, Laporte, Walker, De Bruyne, Sterling.

Pep Guardiola made just one change to his starting XI, with David Silva replacing summer signing Rodri.

Ilkay Gundogan shifted to the base of the City midfield in Rodri’s absence – a tactic we may see on occasion this season when Guardiola anticipates coming up against a side that is content to sit deep and defend.

Guardiola’s three substitutions were all effectively like for like, with Sergio Aguero completing his first 90 minutes of the campaign with Gabriel Jesus injured.

Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling are the only ever-present midfielders or forwards after three Gameweeks, although there were fitness issues behind Aguero and Bernardo Silva’s benchings on the opening weekend.

Manchester United

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw (Young 34′); Pogba, McTominay (Mata 85′); James, Lingard (Greenwood 56′), Rashford; Martial.

Ever-present starters: De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw, Pogba, McTominay, Lingard, Rashford; Martial.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named the same side that drew 1-1 at Wolves in Gameweek 2.

That meant another start for Anthony Martial up front, with Daniel James on the right and Marcus Rashford on the left of a 4-2-3-1.

Jesse Lingard was again preferred in the hole.

Mason Greenwood‘s second-half introduction on the right wing saw James switch over to the left flank, with Rashford moving more centrally alongside Martial.

Martial picked up an injury late in the game, so should he be ruled out this weekend, we may see a repeat of Rashford up top and James on the left.

Greenwood or Andreas Pereira could then get a look-in on the opposite wing.

Ashley Young may have to deputise again if Luke Shaw is ruled out, with the left-back having sustained a hamstring injury.

Newcastle United

Newcastle United XI (5-4-1): Dúbravka; Ritchie, Dummett, Lascelles (Fernandez 82′), Schär, Krafth; Saint-Maximin (Atsu 17′), S Longstaff, Hayden, Almirón; Joelinton (Muto 88′).

Unchanged starting XIs in 2019/20: 0/2
Ever-present starters: Dúbravka, Ritchie, Dummett, Lascelles, Schär, Hayden, Almirón, Joelinton.

Steve Bruce made two changes to the team beaten at Norwich, with Allan Saint-Maximin and Sean Longstaff replacing Ki Sung-yueng and Jonjo Shelvey.

The 3-5-2 that Bruce had favoured since his appointment was tweaked to the 5-4-1 that brought Rafael Benitez relative success in 2018/19, with Saint-Maximin (replaced by Christian Atsu early on) and Miguel Almiron on the left and right flanks respectively and Joelinton leading the line himself.

United’s back five look relatively settled for the time being (barring injuries), with Emil Krafth having ousted Javier Manquillo at right wing-back.

Norwich City

Norwich City XI (4-2-3-1): Krul; Aarons, Hanley, Godfrey, Lewis; Leitner (McLean 81′), Trybull (Vrancic 81′); Cantwell, Stiepermann (Srbeny 81′), Buendia; Pukki.

Daniel Farke unsurprisingly kept faith with the same 4-2-3-1 shape and starting XI that helped the Canaries beat Newcastle United in Gameweek 2.

With Onel Hernandez and Timm Klose now out long-term, there is less competition on the left-wing and at centre-half – although Christoph Zimmermann returned to action in the Carabao Cup in midweek and may threaten Grant Hanley‘s place soon.

Moritz Leitner was again preferred to Kenny McLean in the double-pivot having displaced the Scot – who has suffered with a back problem – against the Magpies.

Sheffield United

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Henderson; Basham (Morrison 78′), Egan, O’Connell; Baldock, Lundstram, Norwood, Freeman, Stevens; Robinson (Sharp 54′), McGoldrick (McBurnie 54′).

Chris Wilder made just one change to the United team that beat Crystal Palace in Gameweek 2, with Luke Freeman replacing the injured John Fleck in central midfield.

Callum Robinson was fit to start alongside David McGoldrick in the two-man Blades’ attack but both strikers were hooked just after half-time, with substitute Oli McBurnie going on to score.

FPL defender John Lundstram again lined in his usual central midfield role, with Wilder sticking with a 3-5-2.

Southampton

Southampton XI (4-3-3): Gunn; Valery (Djenepo 53′), Vestergaard, Bednarek, Danso; Ward-Prowse, Højbjerg, Romeu; Adams (Boufal 80′), Ings (Armstrong 84′), Redmond.

Ever-present starters: Gunn, Valery, Vestergaard, Bednarek, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Adams, Redmond.

Ralph Hasenhuttl made two changes to the Saints team that lost at home to Liverpool, with Danny Ings and debutant Kevin Danso promoted to the starting XI.

Maya Yoshida dropped to the bench, with the injured Ryan Bertrand missing out altogether.

Hasenhuttl ditched the wing-back system for the first time this season, opting for a 4-3-3 on the south coast.

A centre-half by trade, Danso was used as a makeshift left-back in that four-man defence with Bertrand injured.

James Ward-Prowse, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Oriel Romeu were all starters in midfield, with Che Adams and Nathan Redmond flanking central striker Danny Ings in attack – a tactic Hasenhuttl had experimented with in pre-season.

With Brighton down to ten men early on, Moussa Djenepo was thrown on for Valery in the second half as Hasenhuttl chased a win.

An injury to Redmond in midweek may prompt a rethink against Manchester United, with Hasenhuttl not ruling out a return to a five-man defence.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Rose (Davies 88′), Sánchez, Alderweireld, Walker-Peters (Eriksen 62′); Winks, Sissoko; Son, Lamela (Lo Celso 62′), Moura; Kane.

Starting XI changes made: 2 (1 enforced)
Total starting XI changes in 2019/20: 3
Unchanged starting XIs in 2019/20: 0/2
Ever-present starters: Lloris, Rose, Sánchez, Alderweireld, Walker-Peters, Winks, Sissoko, Lamela, Kane.

Son Heung-min returned from suspension and was one of two changes to Mauricio Pochettino’s starting XI, with Lucas Moura also promoted from the bench.

Christian Eriksen and the injured Tanguy Ndombele were the men to make way as Pochettino deployed an attacking 4-2-3-1 for the visit of Newcastle.

Harry Kane led the line in front of Erik Lamela, with Son and Lucas on the left and right respectively.

Spurs’ back four was unchanged for the third successive match but a second-half injury to Kyle Walker-Peters saw Moussa Sissoko fill in at right-back, with Giovani Lo Celso brought on in central midfield.

Dele Alli wasn’t quite ready to feature but his imminent return will only add to the competition for places in the more offensive midfield positions, with the Spurs attack – bar Kane – looking like a rotation minefield.

Watford

Watford XI (4-4-2 diamond): Foster; Holebas, Cathcart, Dawson, Femenia; Capoue, Hughes (Sarr 74′), Doucouré, Cleverley (Quina 86′); Deulofeu (Welbeck 74′), Gray.

Starting XI changes made: 2 (both enforced)

Unchanged starting XIs in 2019/20: 0/2
Ever-present starters: Foster, Holebas, Cathcart, Dawson, Femenia, Capoue, Hughes, Doucouré, Deulofeu.

Watford manager Javi Gracia made two changes to the side that lost at Everton, both of which were enforced: Tom Cleverley and Andre Gray replacing the injured Troy Deeney and Roberto Pereyra.

With Ismaila Sarr and Danny Welbeck not quite ready for a start, the lack of natural width available to Gracia prompted a formation rethink.

The 4-4-2 was replaced by a diamond shape, with midfield anchor Etienne Capoue and ‘number ten’ Tom Cleverley at the tips.

Will Hughes and Abdoulaye Doucoure were on the right and left of that midfield diamond respectively, with Gerard Deulofeu joining Andre Gray up front.

Pereyra returned in the EFL Cup in midweek and should be ready to start at Newcastle, while Sarr and Welbeck also made the starting line-up for the first time in that 3-0 win over Coventry on Tuesday and could come into contention.

The Hornets’ back four has remained unaltered in the three league matches played so far this season.

West Ham United

West Ham XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Masuaku, Ogbonna, Diop, Fredericks; Noble, Rice; Anderson (Fornals 78′), Lanzini (C Sánchez 88′), Yarmolenko (Antonio 55′); Haller.

Starting XI changes made: 4 (3 unenforced)
Total starting XI changes in 2019/20: 9
Unchanged starting XIs in 2019/20: 0/2
Ever-present starters: Fabianski, Diop, Fredericks, Rice, Lanzini.

Sebastien Haller, Mark Noble and Felipe Anderson all returned from injury in the 3-1 win over Watford, with Andriy Yarmolenko starting on the right flank.

Robert Snodgrass, Pablo Fornals and Jack Wilshere dropped out, while Javier Hernandez reportedly had a minor knee injury.

Noble was the link between midfield anchor Declan Rice and the Hammers’ front four, which featured Yarmolenko and left-winger Anderson on the flanks.

Manuel Lanzini supported Haller in attack but drifted left from his ‘number ten’ role.

The back four was unchanged from Gameweek 2, with Fabian Balbuena again watching on from the bench.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves XI (3-5-2): Patricio, Bennett, Coady, Boly, Doherty (Traore 77′), Neves, Moutinho (Dendoncker 59′), Gibbs-White (Neto 65′), Jonny, Jota, Jimenez.

The first signs that Europa League involvement may disrupt Fantasy assets from Wolves was felt in Gameweek 3, as Leander Dendoncker – who played the full 90 minutes against Torino on Thursday – was benched for only the second time in the league since Gameweek 21 of last season.

Morgan Gibbs-White took his place in central midfield but Wolves’ starting XI was otherwise familiar-looking, with Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota again leading the line in a 3-5-2.

All eyes will be on the teamsheet against Torino tomorrow, then, for clues as to how Santo may line up his troops against Everton on Sunday.

Played WC last week and now doubting my team... (classic)

Should I take the -12 point hit and make these changes?

    Mane, Sterling, KDB, Cantwell, Mount
    Pukki, Kane

I would give Kane another week and hold the transfer. Then make a big move after the break by making three transfers and only taking a -4

If you’re going to do a points deduction wildcard to fix your wildcard then surely you have to have Salah in the new team mate?

Would take out Siggy obviously, and would need to find a couple 0.1 downgrades in one other place. Zinchenko or a Liverpool defender the obvious ones, or even I suppose Haller to Barnes as part of it if all else fails (one week punts risky I know).

IMO -16. Can also argue -12 would be enough, however, I'd rather take a -8 and roll on in that case albeit not more than twice per season for me.

Absolutely no way you should play the WC if a -8 gets you close to your preferred team. 8 points is nothing in the grand scheme of things, you can make up those points immediately or at least over a couple of gameweeks. WC is too precious to blow it because you want just a few different players.

You're looking at things the wrong way. The fact is that you shouldn't be regularly putting yourself in a position to be taking -8 or larger hits in the first place. If you are doing that, you're just chasing points and have probably poorly planned. 'In the grand scheme of things' you should have a decent team to begin with and not need to be taking -8 to fix things.

The only reason that I say i'd consider playing a WC for an -8 is because I have confidence in my own team and a WC is there for emergency fixes. The amount of people around here who say 'is this worth it for -4/-8' is mindboggling.

I'm not looking at things the wrong way, I'm looking at them a different way. Hits are seen as the devil around these parts, and they're not. They can be extremely valuable for many reasons. A -8 is not a big deal if it involves great transfers from underperforming players to those with good underlying stats and fixtures to take advantage of. Plus you're not taking two hits every week, you're doing it to set up a strong team for the next few gameweeks.

Also you're suggestion that taking hits means chasing points is completely invalid. Maybe that's what some people do, but you can take proactive hits that are not points chasing. Getting the right players at the right time (i.e. short runs of very attractive fixtures) is the key to the game. For example, Haller is not points chasing, it's a good move for a home fixture vs Norwich then away to Villa. It just makes sense and he was on my radar before scoring the brace against Watford. In fact I was annoyed that he scored in that game as I wanted him to stay quiet and I was bringing him in regardless.

Hits are not always about 'fixing things'. I use them aggressively, and it works. Patience is not the only way to play this game.

Hits can be valuable, sure, but they're still something that I think people go overboard with.

I'm not saying I would always use a WC for a -8. I'm saying I'd start to consider a WC at -8. It's never going to be a clear cut as use/don't use when you get to a certain point. Perhaps you get to -8 and then think that it would be a good opportunity to change other things around. If you're just using if for 3 transfers, then yes it's stupid, but at the end of the day you can run through a million different teams and the debate will still be out over what to do.

As for Haller. It's difficult without the whole picture. Is he going to outscore whoever you got rid of when the -4 is factored in? If it's a coinflip then why not just wait until next week? Sure there will be other issues to deal with next week but then before you know it you're just going to fall in a hole of either taking -4 every week or never being able to save up 2FT.

It basically comes down to the types of hits you take and when/why you take them. Yes there are a lot of managers who take weird and silly hits like a -4 to get Barnes before Liverpool (now that is points chasing!). But you can also use hits as a strategic weapon where you're targeting particular fixtures all the time and backing your own eye test / reading of the stats to overcome 4 points by having a more optimal team. Right now I want attackers playing Norwich, West Ham, Watford etc and if I can shuffle things around here and there to get top attackers in teams playing against those teams, I will do it. It won't be a -8 every week, but an average of a hit every week or so is fine. As long as you're being proactive not reactive.

I would not consider a WC at -8 because 8 points is still only one good haul away from paying itself off immediately. Sometimes you have to back your judgement and the fixtures rather than be overly cautious. But a WC is so valuable you want to hang on as long as possible. 8 points just aren't enough to justify it.

Suit yourself. Perhaps have a read again and see where -8 is just the trigger. I'm not suggesting using a WC for only 3 trades.

                  Good luck.

I took about 20 hits last season and finished inside the top 300 overall rank. Highest rank got to OR 35 late in the second half of the season. And I was doing exactly what I've described, lots and lots of moves rather than accepting an out of form player with a sub-optimal fixture. Being proactive is really underrated around here.

Sure, I get that you're not saying a -8 should be a guaranteed WC. You'd start to consider it, that's fair enough. Personally I wouldn't consider it unless, as you say, it's also going to allow you to make a lot more than 2-3 upgrades through the squad. If you can massively overhaul things, it becomes viable. But the fixtures have to make it worthwhile - last GW and this GW, I don't think the fixtures are calling for a drastic use of the WC. The time will come but it's not now unless your team is really struggling.

To answer your last question, there's a major factor people don't often consider about a hit. We also talk about it like it's, for example, Jota vs Haller (-4) for the next game. Yes of course, this becomes a lottery and Haller may not outscore whoever it happens to be by 4 points. But now you have Haller, and if you want him for a period of time it's better just to get him sooner rather than later because you it might reward you straight away with the prime fixture, plus it's one less move to worry about the week after.

I look at whether I think the hit can justify itself over 3-4 gameweeks, not just the next one. By taking the hit immediately you free yourself to move onto the next fire in the next GW without allowing your team to fester and deteriorate. Make things happen, get ahead of the curves, be proactive - it can be a really rewarding and successful way to play FPL. It takes guts though. If you "just wait until next week" you never really get ahead of the pack, you're always waiting for more evidence (points you don't have).

It's certainly the case that you should only take a hit if you're confident it will benefit you over the next few GWs, not just the next one, but then that ought to be the case for any transfer.

I suppose the textbook case is those who got Kane in for a hit last week because he faced Newcastle, and are getting rid already.

Or, a positive example, if you take a hit to do 2 transfers this week, and one of them is a Burnley player, that's not a bad move; you may bench him v Liverpool (certainly a defender), but he's gonna be gold over the following 4+ GWs.

For sure. It's obvious, but I stated it because I do see a lot of comments here that don't take the 3-4 GW window into account when discussing hits. In a single GW it's a lottery, but far less so over multiple good fixtures. Then you really only need your new player to get one more attacking return / bonus in 3 or 4 games to pay it off. With the added advantage of gradually fixing small issues in your squad as you go, removing fires, and avoiding the need to Wildcard.

Right now if someone is weighing up whether to take a hit to get a player like Haller for someone who is out of form and has poor fixtures, that hit is worth the minimal risk. If it goes to play Haller will be in the team for quite awhile, and the 4 points will be long forgotten.

Yeah the Kane example is a good one. That wasn't a great move because one blank was always going to lead to instant regret. I think with a Haller or Pukki situation you're really saying to yourself, "I want this player for the medium term, I've seen enough to back my judgment on this player, and the fixtures won't turn me against them after just one blank". That's the difference. Kane was a problem waiting to happen. That said, if I had Kane now I would take a hit to move him to Aguero (C). Turn a negative into a positive!

What benefit can you hope to gain from two or three posters answering your question having thought about it for two seconds, not looking up the stats or considering anything else about your team, your plans and your way of managing? Nothing they have to say is going to off more than what you already know yourself. Until you get into a proper discussion about your whole team going forward, it's pointless asking for advice from a random stranger.

also: i think by and large the "community" advises against playing the way you advocate because the groupthink doesn't further it. and this can inevitably cause one to talk themselves out of calculated risks if asking over and over again. (fyi: i don't necessarily play the way you do, am more 70/30 patience-based but Iast year, i paid for it, so 'm trying to get it to at least 55/45...

100% this. The community as a whole does not approve of a super aggressive approach to the game. There's so much "wait and see what happens first..." advice/reaction out there. And it can be very difficult to fight against it without being accused of points chasing. Calculated risks are the backbone of my entire strategy. Most of my regrets in FPL are from the moves I didn't make, not the other way around.

Indeed. I regret how in the pre-season I got into a couple of spats with aggressive group-think leaders for refusing to fall into line. I'm currently in the top 0.5% OR so I must be doing something right, but I don't bother to post my squad as I'm not interested in their recommendations anyway.

Sounds like you're on the right track. Being patient is fine to an extent, as long as you're not obsessed with it. There is definitely a place for being proactive too, and if you can find that balance you will have a great season. As an aggressive player I think my top advice would be to make the moves you truly believe in deep down, even if that sounds silly. Don't talk yourself into something, but don't be afraid to back yourself. If all your research and eye test is telling you to make a transfer for a hit, do it. Likewise if it's telling you to hold onto a player everyone else is ditching and whose price is dropping, hold!

Exactly. Get out of the mindset that other people know how to manage your team (as in the specifics of it) better than you do, it's so much more fun and rewarding. You're on fire and if you had listened to others you would be regretting it massively.

Are you on triple Everton defence or is that somebody else? Whatever you're doing it's working. The worst thing you can is second guess your decisions based on a few posts from people who really don't care about your team and have almost certainly put less effort into reaching their conclusion than you will about the same transfer or strategy.

I've just taken a -8 (4 transfers) which 90% of the community would frown upon and call points chasing.

Yet I bet if I posted it as a RMT (without mentioning the hits) people would say "wow nice team, Wildcard?". So the difference in opinion is that it's a great team moving forward, unless you had to take 8 points off it then it becomes terrible.

Ah thought so. I rated it in pre season too. If you see a potential points avenue, why not back it? I think perhaps people set out to "avoid a disastrous season". I set out to win FPL haha, or at least give it a shake. Attack is the best form of defence! Or triple Toffee defence is the best form of attack 😉

Moura, Lamela, Trossard, Jota > KDB, Cantwell, Ceballos, Haller.

Biggest mistake was that I had the money itb to do Jota > Haller last for free, and my finger on the trigger, but held back just to "show some patience" and give Jota another chance due to the fact he is a good striker in a good team. My gut said Haller vs Watford and moving forward, but I hesitated. And that costly hesitation annoys me so much more than if I had just made the move and Haller blanked, in which case I would've got over immediately and looked forward to his next fixture.

Ha ha, quite so! To me, "coverage" is just playing safe and guaranteeing a mediocre week. Fine if your goal is to stay in Last Man Standing but no risks = no wins. Actually, I do have an agenda - a weekly cash ML. $50 a win, nothing for coming 2nd. So being aggressive nad risky is built into my strategy.

Now the whole (non WC) team is:

                        Heaton
                        TAA - VVD - Digne
                        Sterling (C) - KDB - Salah - Cantwell - Ceballos
                        Haller - Pukki

                        Pope - Greenwood - Rico - Montoya
                        0.0 itb

Ceballos will probably become Mount when I free up some funds in GK/defence, but the fixtures don't appeal until GW7 for Chelsea so I'm waiting.

Indeed, completely agree. Your strategy makes sense for what's on offer, I would be the same. For me the ultimate goal is still win my cash MLs by end of season, and OR. But I'm definitely not aiming for a solid top 10 finish in the MLs, I'm aiming to win them and I will take calculated risks to get ahead rather than drift along with the pack hoping for the best with 90% of the same players at the same time as my rivals. Picked up 800 pounds last season for first place in a 40-manager league, so no need to change a thing until proven otherwise in my opinion.

Other than your front 2, it looks like a well-selected original squad. Unlike some, you're not panicking over your 2 Pool defenders who will certainly come good sooner rather than later. I can see that squad serving you well for a long time before you have to use your WC.

Yeah I'm happier with my selections than my points tally so far. I feel there was a bit of bad luck here and there with things like Trossard looking incredible but only netting the one goal, Lamela getting the game time I predicted but scoring all his points in the fixture I benched him etc. But I try to focus on whether I made good decisions rather than how many points they scored, and at least with a player like Lamela I paid 6m for Spurs attacking blanks not 11m and a wasted captaincy.

Overall I'm happy with the spine of my team. And I'm one of the few who seem content to hang on to double Liverpool defence for a couple more GWs. Without a single CS they both still average 4ppm, which isn't too bad considering no big hauls yet. Both are capable of going big, and at some point I believe they will. Given not much has gone right yet, I'm satisfied to still be on 195 points and 144k OR without hitting any great heights. Hoping this new team is the one to do the job over the next month.

Mentioned already but enjoyed this post

I think you can justify hits more when you know it’s not just for 1 week or if you plan to roll a transfer to have 2 the following week etc
I took a hit this week to join the Pukki party and am also considering another for Kane to Auba cause I think they have better fixtures and potential captain choice
          Cheers

          Good Stuff

I totally agree. Patience is overrated here. People take things to the extremes and forget that reality is somewhere in between.

          How shall i say it?

          Cons of a hit:
          - a minus four (not you) fixable by 1 goal/1 CS across the course of the transfer
          - chance of losing out on extra hauls by that player (that would be a dumb hit to take anyway, or completely unlucky/unexpected ex: Barnes brace vs liverpool say...)

          Pros of a hit:
          - Possibility to sell before a price drop
          - Possibility to buy before a price rise
          - Possibility to get covers or differentials
          - Staying aligned with your overall strategy (because what are you without it?)
          - Bigger possibility of hauls than the transferred out player (or so logic would say)

Last year was the first year I decided to not take any hits. Any. It was my worst year ever.

That said, by GW 14 I broke, and started taking hits. It's when i instantly started regaining some shape.

Like you said and contrary to the other guy, WITHOUT hits, i was in fact chasing points. I wasnt able to jump on a bandwagon, leave price drops, and worst of all, envision something and DO IT. I basically had two teams, my real team, and a wish team in my head I was holding away from for the sake of not taking hits.

Very interesting post, appreciate the analysis. As you've pointed out there are a number of potential advantages to taking a hit now and then, yet for some reason hits are often shoved into a box of being too risky or not worth it "if your new player won't outscore you old player by 4 points this gameweek". It's so much more complex than that. You also have to factor in making multiple transfers to improve 2 or 3 areas in your team at the same time; in this case no single player is 'the hit', they are all part of the one big move and now you're getting say 3 players you think are significantly better than 3 others. That is much more likely to be worth 4 points in the short term.

It's a shame more managers won't read your story about last season, it's a great cautionary tale. Of course it is possible to do well without taking hits, I would never suggest otherwise, but equally it is possible to do well by taking hits, not in spite of them. There are far too many sweeping generalisations doing the rounds like the one about taking hits all the time must mean you're chasing points, which as you point out can be the opposite of reality. Never taking hits can make it hard to get creative, so you're more likely to go for the obvious pick in the exact price point of the player you're taking out. On the other hand with multiple transfers you're much more open to thinking of different possibilities and ways to shift funds around your team to get the best possible 11 you can on the field each week.

Great debate and contributions here - exactly why I sign up every year for FFS. I tend to agree with both perspectives and what it means to your medium-longer term plan.

Personally, I (and I’m sure countless others) have been burnt by being afraid of the 4 point / 8 point hits in the past and held onto players who’ve then trolled me and messed up my longer term plans as values dropped leaving future moves hamstrung by 0.1m-0.3m. Equally I’ve benefited from moving early and bringing players in that (1) fixtures support (2) stats/form support and (3) aligns with where I see the team in 4 weeks but it’s a slippy slope as it can majorly backfire leaving you net loss which is why I think it’s a good strategy when you’ve got a lead in mini leagues etc as forces those behind to adapt not only to catch you but to keep up with the other moves - not to mention it can preserve a WC for good tilt at Xmas games which I’ve found more valuable when internationals are out of way, form starts to show in the stats more than first 6 weeks (Part time FPL players really screw up value fluctuations I think vs post October - at the moment we’ve got players values so volatile) vs. everyone else is taking hits at Xmas.

Great examples this season of punting early on Pukki GW2 (+£0.3m) and just pulled trigger last night on Perez (-£0.2m) who I think could troll me next few weeks with leaky Bournemouth and United Shawless but I can’t afford to not be there for Haller or before Cantwell goes above £5.0 as he’s no longer a super value option. Outs are potentially about to drop 0.1m each and ins about to +0.1 each if I don’t move so that’s a 0.4 swing on me owning those players if I have to get them next week which means more surgery to make it happen or wasting a WC which I think is more valuable in Nov/Dec.

          Good post.

I’m also more inclined to take hits earlier in the season to catch price rises etc.

I actually took a -8 before last gameweek to have a slight restructure early in the season. I had Auba and wanted to drop my premium forward to accomodate KDB. In 11 years of playing, I think that’s only about my third -8.

Anyway, it paid off in one week, which is pretty unusual.

          Mane, Sterling, KDB, Mcginn, Son
          Rash, Pukki

i see all these endless posts haha ppl gettin mount, haller, cantwell etc popular choices and don’t want to miss out on potential bigger points. son, rash and not having city pool defs bit worries me and i’m all for to be more aggressive and take necessary hits. thx for reply
ps. few options i’m looking at
          son/rash -> kun/mount or ceballos
          son/awb -> mount/laporte or taa
          rash -> haller for free

Hey RMT, thanks for that. Not sure if you'll come back to this but happy to give some advice (with the standard disclaimer that it may or may not actually help!).

Honestly I like your team, and I wouldn't panic with that lineup at all. It's a bit different but that's not a bad thing. For me, transfers are about really obvious upgrades where you've identified a plum set of fixtures and the player to take advantage, replacing an asset you definitely can't see performing well moving forward. So big upside, minimal risk, take the hit.

In my case right now that meant getting or Lamela, Moura, Trossard and Jota because they've had their time, and now the fixtures have turned / they're out of form / they're unlikely to start anymore etc, I'm not going to hang around with my fingers crossed when I can jump on the front foot and back the fixtures (Haller and Cantwell in what will hopefully be a goal fest) and make long term upgrades like KDB in.

However, your situation is different. You actually have a team that already looks well set up for this GW and the next few. I personally might not have jumped on Son so early, and I prefer cheaper forwards to Rashford, but that's not the point - you have these players in your team for a reason, they're definitely going to get minutes, their fixtures are good, and a few of them are slight differentials which is great too. You should probably hold and hope for a change of luck. When the likes of Son start scoring, you will be the one having the breakout GW.

My advice would be different if you had clearly rubbish attacking players. Then I would say yes, Haller and Mount and all these guys are promising. But there is no way I would rip that team up just yet. Give it a chance.

Definitely keep Son now that you've got him. Only a matter of time before you get the rewards there. And Rashford to Haller would be unnecessary as the former could easily outscore the latter. It's sideways and points chasing. Rashford playing up front, what if he scores a brace? You'd be so frustrated. That's where the patience comes in.

Personally I think the time to abandon patience is when you look at the player and fixtures and think "I can't see this going well in the next 2-3 GWs". I look at Son and Rashford and think "Yeah, they will probably score quite a few points in the next month".

Take a breather, take your FT into the IB and come back into GW5 ready to mix things up if needed. I've got a feeling your team is going to score well this weekend. Good luck.

Always enjoy your posts! Personally I'm super dullard. Only took 2 hits last season(both failed miserably) yet stil achieved my highest OR of 28k. It don't feel right when I try change to my style of play, and don't know. How do I break that cycle and play with less fear. I think the pressures of playing of cash mini leagues may play a part of me playing safe

I find it rather odd that you are so nonchalant about hits but also very clingy to the wildcard. I would think your attitude towards both would be the same.
I played my wildcard last season in gw18 or 19 and pretty much used it to buy salah back. When you play your wildcard later in the season, odds are you will make very few changes as your team will already contain most of the players you want and everyone knows who the performing players this season are. When you play your wc early you can make wholesale changes and catch multiple price rises and jump on bandwagons early.
And of course you can always take your -4 or -8 hits later when everyone else is playing their wc

I get what you mean. It's a bit of a contradiction. It's more that I think the Wildcard can be so powerful later on that I would rather use the odd hit to protect it. That said, I've never actually held onto my Wildcard for very long. GW5 seems to be the norm, and last season my GW5 WC basically set up my whole season.

What I don't like about the early WC teams I've seen this season is that the fixture swing / new information wasn't dramatic enough to justify it. Most WC teams look like a regular team with 1-2 different players. Surely you want your WC to be like a wrecking ball that comes in and potentially smashes 30-40 extra points straight away, and to do that it needs to be a massive restructure of funds and taking advantage of a giant fixture swing. Getting KDB is not a reason to WC, just take a hit and get KDB.

Still, I do take your point. The WC should be used when your team really needs it. I could easily end up blowing mine in a few weeks. But from what I've seen, those who used it in GW3 made a poor decision. Not just in hindsight. Many told them it was a poor decision in advance. I even said something here along the lines of "I think these WC teams are going to be outscored by regular teams in GW3" - and that's pretty much what happened. Each to their own though.

Well the -8 just paid off. Up 7 points in total (factoring in the exact team I would have played otherwise), which is obviously not a huge margin but it's more points than I would have had by being patient and holding the transfer. Plus, now my whole team is significantly better moving forward, which is the underrated element of taking hits. Being extremely patient means you can never really quite get to the team you want, and you're always hoping rather than expecting to get something from a number of players in your starting 11.

Anyway I'm happy, and it could have been much better if Cantwell had buried his big chance. That can be said after every GW of course, but that really should have been a goal and then the hits would have been looking at an immediate 12+ net result.

Depends on what type of manager you are. Personally for me I'm happy to take a -8 hit for a long term gain. A -12 would be my tipping point to wildcard

Easy downgrade there for me to then afford Sigurdsson to KDB

Haller, Barnes or Wesley in for Jota.

Haller - mainly with this week, maybe next in mind.
Barnes - tough this week but great after that
Wesley - cheap and enables Sig to KDB hit, but least convinced/favoured 1

Yeah I had 2FT so did the Perez to Mount move already.

And KDB over Sigurdsson is a big difference I wish I had lol.

I was set on Jota to Haller but now leaning more towards Barnes for longer term

It's a hard one, I prefer Haller but I have no real reasoning behind it. The 0.8 saved would make it easier to get KDB later I guess. So I can understand why you would go, Barnes. But if you are considering Barnes, maybe save the Transfer instead. That way you have 2ft next GW and might be able to do a -4 to get both Barnes and KDB by downgrading somewhere else?

If he's benched it'll be against a top team and we don't want him for that anyway. Lundstram can come of the bench in such scenarios. Upside though is hell lot big

These moves obviously depend on anything that happens this week, but would you say these changes would constitute a WC over the international break (for GW5) Have 1FT then so would be multiple hits if I did them all otherwise:

    Pope
    Taa VVD Digne Zinchenko Rico
    Salah Sterling Sigurdsson Mount Dendoncker
Pukki Jota Greenwood — though jota will be Barnes/Haller this week

    To

    Pope

    Pukki BARNES Greenwood

5 changes... I would think yes? I'm planning to make wholesale changes to my team during the international break on a WC.

The question you have to ask yourself is whether the moves are really necessary or can they be delayed several gameweeks?

If they can be delayed, it means you can hold off your WC and spread out the transfers.

The international break IMO is a good time to WC in case of any random injuries from the friendlies / Euro qualifiers.

That’s another aspect that makes me lean towards doing it then.

The major change is getting KDB in. Expensive asset so requires a bit of a reshuffle of funds. Also ditching people potentially on borrowed time like Zinchenko (rotation likely imminent), clearing out deadwood to get good bench players in (Lundstram, maybe Cantwell) and players who are looking good as well (Barnes, maybe Maddison)

Tough one though cos overall my team isnt awful
