Greenwood only a substitute as Rashford starts up front

Southampton take on Manchester United in the Gameweek 4 curtain-raiser. Kick-off at St. Mary’s is at 12:30pm BST.

An injury to Anthony Martial (£7.7m) against Palace had dominated the build-up to this match, with speculation rife as to whether Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer could hand a start to Mason Greenwood (£4.5m).

That hasn’t transpired, with budget FPL forward Greenwood only among the substitutes.

Solskjaer has made three changes to the Manchester United side that lost 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace in GW3, with Ashley Young (£5.4m), Andreas Pereira (£5.0m) and Juan Mata (£6.4m) starting in the lunch-time kick-off.

Young replaces the injured Luke Shaw (£5.5m) at left-back, whilst Solskjaer has shuffled his pack in the absence of Martial: Mata and Pereira earning starts against the Saints as Jesse Lingard (£6.5m) drops to the bench.

The Norwegian boss has turned to the tried and tested Mata to add attacking impetus to United’s frontline, with the Red Devils aiming to prevent their sluggish Premier League start turning into something of a nightmare after a winless run of two games.

This is a game of extreme importance in the Solsjkaer era at United and the decision to opt for experience in the form of Mata as opposed to a youthful prospect such as Greenwood is telling of how pivotal this fixture could be for United’s momentum in the initial stages of the 2019/20 campaign.

Meanwhile, Southampton boss Ralph Hassenhuttl has made just two changes to his starting line-up for the game against United, with Cedric (£4.9m) and Sofiane Boufal (£5.5m) earning starts at the expense of Yan Valery (£5.0m) and Nathan Redmond (£6.4m).

The Saints will be looking to build on their impressive away victory over Brighton in Gameweek 3.

Southampton XI: Gunn, Cedric, Vestergaard, Bednarek, Danso, Højbjerg, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Boufal, Adams, Ings.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Young, McTominay, Pogba, Andreas, Mata, James, Rashford.

Quality balls incoming from James, but as usual United strikers useless at making runs across the front (van nistelrooy esque) post for a tap in.

If utd’s attack was just a bit better, and their midfield, and their defence, and their goalkeeper, they’d be right up there challenging for the top 4

Don't care what the odds are. By favourites I mean we have he best chances (not including poor and city)

Arsenal and spurs just don't have the squad. Liverpool are above us but with a bit of luck even top 2 not impossible. city for the title though

        1. June 2018 – Problems begin at the World Cup where De Gea lets a long-range shot from Cristiano Ronaldo squirm through his hands as Spain draw 3-3 with Portugal.

        2. December 2018 – De Gea parries Shkodran Mustafi‘s header into his own net as Manchester United draw 2-2 with Arsenal at Old Trafford.

        3. March 2019 – Granit Xhaka‘s speculative shot flies in from 30 yards in a 2-0 defeat in the return fixture.

        4. April 2019 – De Gea dives over a right-footed shot from Lionel Messi as Barcelona win 3-0 in the Champions League quarter-final second leg.

        5. April 2019 – The goalkeeper’s positioning is called into question again as Gylfi Sigurdsson scores one of four Everton goals at Goodison Park.

        6. April 2019 – De Gea is criticised for allowing Bernardo Silva and Leroy Sane to score at his near post in a 2-0 derby defeat to Man City.

        7. Aug 2019 - DDG again drops a clanger at his near post, beaten by Patrick Van Aanholt, 2 minutes after Utd had equalised, allowing a last stoppage time winner winner for Crystal Palace at Old Trafford

Also Alonso vs Chelsea last year

But yeah DDG is clearly the best GK in the world

I don’t get the hate and comments like these.. they will be top 4. Their xG and xGc rivals the best so far this season, results just not going their way

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

So you could almost say XGc & XG are not accurate predictors of either FPL points, or premier league points in this case?

Incorrect, this type of data is essential to FPL.. it just takes time for things to revert to the mean.. 2 shots on target for the Saints - United were unlucky not to have a shut out there

Yep, give it thousands of games and things should normalise - it’s a good job we don’t have to plan over short 4-5 game windows in FPL!

Stats are predictors for future outcomes and acts as essential information for those windows you are referring to.

“Essential” is quite a subjective term, more of an opinion - some would share and some would not

What is not up for debate is that XGc & XG have not been accurate predictors of either FPL points, or premier league points in this case, this case being Man Utd and their start to the season

          2. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
            • 14 Years

And my comment was blatantly NOT incorrect

XGc and XG have not been accurate predictors of either FPL points or premier league point sin this case

This case being Man Utd and their start to the season

            1. IRBOX ⚽
              • 7 Years
              4 years, 7 months ago

You’re referring to a singular outcome based on one set of data? If we extrapolate the data over the entire cohort of FPL, then yes your statement is indeed incorrect

                • 14 Years
                4 years, 7 months ago

So it’s a good job my statement was referring to a
the specific case of Man Utd, right?

Are you familiar with the English language by any chance? 😉

                  4 years, 7 months ago

It clearly wasn’t, it was a blanket statement referring to stats predicting outcomes to FPL. I’m sure you can tell from my terminology I am familiar with semantics so that’s just ridiculous

                    Let’s recap shall we? 🙂

“So you could almost say XGc & XG are not accurate predictors of either FPL points, or premier league points in this case?”

I will direct your attention to the presence of “in this case” at the closure of the sentence.

And do you notice that the comment is in a thread about the football team Manchester United?

And in direct response to a comment about their start to the season having hugely positive XGc and XG data?

If you hadn’t noticed the above, then we have solved the problem 🙂

If you HAD noticed the above... then you may need to start paying some attention to your English teacher 😉

                    1. IRBOX ⚽

I’ll give you some credit, I did forego the phrase ‘in this case’, however, you did also incorrectly spell my name. Now I won’t call that dyslexia because as a health professional i can tell you that letter reversals are an incorrect and mythical definition for the disorder. Try not to get hung up on the English literature and we won’t have any problems

                        • 14 Years

Ok so at least we’ve settled the first problem and acknowledged the fact that XGc and XG are not accurate predictors of either FPL points or Premier league points in this case 🙂

Now, on to the second problem which you have so kindly raised 🙂

It is indeed prudent not to attribute the reference to “ibrox” to the learning difficulty dyslexia...

Not only could the “misspelling” have been caused by extenuating circumstances/technical error (e.g. predictive text etc) rather than a learning difficulty, but equally, it could also have been a tactical misspelling, or even the dreaded double reverse misspelling, where a user misspells a word or phrase (or even a stadium!) incorrectly in their username!

Based on the English comprehension ability demonstrated in this thread so far I’m not ruling anything out though 😉
