Klopp downplays Mane tantrum as Liverpool end clean sheet drought

Liverpool made it 13 league wins in a row and kept their first clean sheet of the season at Turf Moor on Saturday evening.

We reflect on their latest success and any Fantasy lessons learned in our Scout Notes article below.

Burnley 0-3 Liverpool

  • Goals: Chris Wood (£6.3m) own-goal, Sadio Mane (£11.5m), Roberto Firmino (£9.5m)
  • Assists: Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m), Firmino, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m)
  • Bonus: Firmino – 3, Alexander-Arnold – 2, Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) – 1

After the much-documented defensive struggles of August, all was well with the world again as Liverpool kept a fairly routine clean sheet and broke their shut-out duck for 2019/20.

This was about as textbook a Liverpool result as possible, with Jurgen Klopp’s side winning to nil and all three of the Reds’ frontline delivering attacking returns for their owners.

Sadio Mane (£11.5m) didn’t cut a contented figure, however, with his 84th-minute substitution provoking an angry response from the Senegalese winger – apparently not at the substitution itself but at Mohamed Salah‘s (£12.5m) selfishness in a promising breakaway move that petered out moments before his withdrawal.

Jurgen Klopp admitted the Egyptian was the root cause of the tantrum but downplayed suggestions of a rift between the pair, saying:

He was upset, that was obvious. You cannot hide his emotions like that.

But all sorted. We spoke about it, everything is fine. We are individuals, we are emotional. It was a situation in a game obviously, what else could happen? It’s not a phone call. It was a situation in the game he wasn’t happy about and then that’s completely fine. Would he do it exactly the same manner again? Probably not, but it happens.

Nothing happened, he didn’t say any wrong words, it just looked a little bit different to how he looks usually. Of course, I can understand that it’s a little story. Thank God we are now away for a week, so if you write something about it, we will not read it anyway. And after a week, nobody can remember anymore, so it’s a really cool moment to do it.

But it is all good really, all fine.

Salah’s occasional greediness when on the ball is nothing new and we have seen the Egypt international dispossessed or shoot wildly from impossible positions on enough occasions over the past two seasons to not be too surprised by his myopia in Gameweek 4 – he was tackled on more occasions and had more efforts off target than any other FPL midfielder in 2018/19, often to the detriment of his fortunes on the Bonus Points System.

Salah can, meanwhile, point to the fact that he not only created more chances than Mane last season but also registered four times as many assists.

Aside from this mini-tiff, it was business as usual for the front three.

Mane converted a Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) pass to put the Reds 2-0 up before Firmino himself finished expertly when collecting Salah’s heavy touch to put the game to bed on 79 minutes.

The Egyptian’s owners may have been deflated at the lack of goal for FPL’s priciest asset but on another day he would have found the back of the net: Salah struck the woodwork after just four minutes before bundling the ball wide when advancing on Nick Pope (£4.5m) soon after.

Mane and Salah will, as they did in 2018/19, likely trade goals and points all season but Firmino is keeping pace with them at this early stage of the campaign.

With Fantasy managers restricted to three Liverpool slots, the Brazilian was the fall-guy last season as Mane and the Reds’ defenders offered much better value for money.

The link-up forward who has long been viewed as the least threatening member of Liverpool’s front three, Firmino has actually registered more goal attempts and shots in the box than his two teammates so far this season and it will be interesting to monitor the Brazil international’s underlying stats over the coming weeks to see if his output is being sustained.

For as long as Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) remains fit, owners of Liverpool’s defensive assets will retain hopes that the Reds can go close to matching last season’s clean sheet count of 21.

There is a lot of debate in the Fantasy community as to how much Aymeric Laporte‘s (£6.5m) impending absence could affect Manchester City’s solidity at the back but there is little doubt that, should any misfortune befall van Dijk, any lingering talk of a Liverpool defensive double-up would mostly evaporate.

Van Dijk was superb on Saturday, dominating Chris Wood (£6.3m) in the air and allowing Burnley’s much-vaunted strike partnership few sights of goal.

It wasn’t a completely flawless display and Liverpool’s high defensive line still gives occasional cause for concern, with Wood and substitute Jay Rodriguez (£5.8m) wasting excellent chances at either end of the game when breaking beyond van Dijk and the visitors’ backline.

Those were the only two saves that Adrian (£4.6m) had to make, however, and for the most part this defensive performance resembled the dominant displays of last season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m) registered his third assist of the campaign but this was one of the more flukier attacking returns imaginable, with the Liverpool right-back’s cross from deep taking a deflection off Wood and looping in over Pope.

Up until Liverpool’s quickfire double in the first half, Burnley had largely held their own against the European champions.

Fantasy managers who own any of the Clarets’ assets can put this 3-0 defeat to the back of their minds as this was perhaps the stiffest test that Dyche’s side will face until December, with Burnley now sitting top of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 5-14.

There was enough encouragement against the ‘also-rans’ of Southampton and Wolves in Gameweeks 1 and 3 for those of us who are considering a Burnley asset or two over the next three months, with Saturday’s defeat merely a reflection of just how far ahead the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City are from the chasing pack.

Dyche said of the game:

I have got to be honest, I was pretty pleased with the performance overall. I don’t think it ends up a 3-0 game on the actual game.

The first one is unlucky, the second one is a mistake and until then I didn’t think there was a lot in it.

We held our own in so many ways but the details are so important in every game, especially against the top sides.

When the turnovers came in the game they were clinical. My only gripe is that we gave it away too cheaply, too many times.

It’s a strange one because I don’t think Popey has had too much to do, but we stuck at it and tried to ask questions and probe.

Ben Mee (£5.0m) made an uncharacteristic error for Liverpool’s second goal, while four-goal Ashley Barnes (£6.7m) drew a blank for the first time this season.

The in-form striker offered flickers of hope to his ever-growing band of owners, shooting wide from a similar position to which he scored against Wolves and being denied a certain goal by an Alexander-Arnold intervention.

Dyche made his first league line-up change of the season for this match, with Aaron Lennon (£4.9m) replacing the injured Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m) on the right flank.

The Burnley boss gave an update on Gudmundsson and Robbie Brady (£5.5m) after full-time, saying:

Robbie will get minutes now. He’s not going away with Ireland cos he’s not ready for that. Hopefully he’ll get two 90 minutes in over the break which will bring him somewhat back up to speed.

Johann we’ll to wait and see on with his niggly calf. He’s not made it for the international trip so we don’t know whether he’s going to make it for Brighton in a couple of weeks.

Steven Defour (£5.5m) has now left the club by mutual consent, meanwhile.

For Liverpool, Jordan Henderson (£5.5m) hit the deck late in the game and was withdrawn soon after but the Reds’ skipper downplayed any injury concerns after full-time.

Henderson said:

I was alright. I was fine, I don’t know, maybe the gaffer thought I was hobbling about a bit. But no, it’s fine.

So frustrated with my captain choices this season so next gw it's between Salah and Sterling and I know I will get it wrong.

Salah: Home game against Newcastle that burned me against Spurs in gw3 when I captained Kane.

Sterling: Away game against Norwich which are very attacking and should leak goals.

So which one are you going for and what is the reason behind it?

Last season I got it wrong 33 or 34 times! It is so frustrating, I would do a lot better with a set and forget. Captaining Salah home this week.

I have got it wrong so far between Salah/sterling.

I was tempted by KDB this week and bottled it for fear of the amount of people captaining sterling.

At the moment I’m with sterling. As it’s the 5.30 game and i’ll Watch it in the pub!

Sterling didn't score this week, while Aguero banged in 2 goals and an assist! So obviously it's Sterlings turn to haul!

It's such a killer when that happens...especially when Tielemans has a game like the weekend just gone. Leic fixtyures shift now so i got rid of Maddison on my WC, activated on Sat

      Decent

One too many premiums at the back imo and the Palace fixture run makes Ayew look a very optimistic use of 0.5 - check out the next 9 and decide how many returns he’ll get. He’s also not tied on by any means.

I’d put that 1.5 mill into a Leicester mid - both Mount and James feels dodgy to me. Leicester are the better team and will score more and the mid from there will be the better value imo.

        Thank you.
I really want a playing bench but totally get where you're coming from.
Had a torrid time with Perez, which Leicester mid do you fancy? I'm a fan of Tielemans but Maddison may be better?

          Torn between the two.

I’m edging towards Tielemans right now. Maddison keeps getting fantastic stats but the returns seem slightly slim.

(On my set up I’m waiting at least one more week with McGinn perhaps two - the Leicester fixtures are still pretty moderate.)

I actually rage WC'd Sat evening after dropping to 1.8m rank. Finished OR 6k the last two seasons but feel I'm being left for dead so far this season. Had about 5 players to deal with so just pulled the trigger.
I agree with your logic though. 4 games is a great sample pool

Not on WC but think I'd be going Haller - Barnes - Pukki in a 3-4-3 or Haller - Barnes in a 3-5-2.

All 3 of those are focal points for their team's attack, take a lot of shots, have good upcoming fixtures (in case of Haller / Barnes anyway).

If I wanted to be weirdly different, I might consider Firmino (form) or Auba (fixtures).

Aguero rotation will probably kick in soon, especially with CL so would say that boat might have left.

Haller Barnes Pukki is my current thinking but I really think Callum Wilson now at 7.8 is great value. 0.2m price drop for someone who is the focal point of attack and with 1G and 3A's to his name already.

Yeah true... just a bit worried about Bournemouth ATM, don't think they're as fluid as last season & at 7.8 he really needs to be outscoring those other names mentioned. He's not doing so well for minutes per chance ATM so think i'll wait and see until Bmouth get their attacking shape nailed on.

Morning guys, I need to advice, fairly average gameweek but really worried about my team going forward. My forwards are mainly a concern. is surgery needed? Wildcard consideration?

Currently setting up for gw 5:

    Ryan,
    Taa, robbo, digne, zinchenko, Lundstram
    Salah, sterling, kdb, ceballos*
    Jota*

    Pukki, cantwell, greenwood

    1ft, 0.1 itb

Jota is a big problem, can't afford Barnes, could punt on wood but doesn't feel too good a move . I think I may have made a mistake trusting Ceballos to start. Happy with defence but it's costing my forward line, would love Haller/Barnes/Tammy etc, any thoughts?

Funny how when TAA had the second-highest xA after KDB in the first 3 weeks, no one wanted to bring him in.

Now he gets a completely lucky assist with 0.16 xA in this game, and everyone's rushing him in.

Reason - 11 points. Last week's haul is this week's bandwagon every single week. Completely reactive, looking at points and points alone.

I had 7 of the scoutpicks, and close analogues of 2 more (vvd for Taa and Laporte for Zinchenko).

As often seems to happen, I then had a terrible week - more than 5 million Gameweek rank and down 1 million overall rank to 1.6 million.

Martial + Kane to Mount + Aguero (C) felt good. I would've captained Sterling if I didn't get Aguero so the points swing was tasty.

In a word awesome. Wildcarded and almost all the guys I brought in (KDB, Abraham, Haller, Digne, TAA, Kelly) except Pukki and Mings got good returns. Should have played Kelly over Mings in hindsight due to home fixtures. Guys who stayed Salah, Sterling and Mount diappointed. But overall happy with 70 points. Usually my WC gives me 30-40 last few years.

Decent week, but cost myself some points.

Smooth: KdB captain paid off very early, and got even better for me as a Sterling non-owner. Kane scored too, so my plan of KdB & Kane outscoring Sterling & 8.0m might yet work! Double Pool defence with the essential Trent doing what he does. Salah my only other returner. Ryan scored 0 which I'll take as a win this week! 🙂

Rough: All week had Kelly starting for KWP but Friday night stats table browsing convinced me to go Lundstram. Also had Martial injured very nearly brought in Silva or Mount but didn't want to book myself a transfer so sold Dendoncker for Cantwell instead. On top of this the players I sold last week Tielemans & Wilson both scored. So the lesson is have patience but I've earnt 0.6m so far from Martial & Pukki.

Third green arrow up to 425k.

Smooth: Practiced what I preach and went with another -8 double hit (4 transfers total) which scored a very satisfying net margin victory of 9 points over those transferred out.

Moura, Lamela, Trossard, Jota (6 points total) > KDB, Cantwell (so close!), Ceballos, Haller (24 points total). Minus 1pt on the gap as I would've had Greenwood sub in for Moura if I had made no transfers. 64 - 8 = 56 points overall. Nothing flash but better than it would have been.

More importantly than the points, I've set my team how I wanted it moving forward without having to use the Wildcard or worry about any more fires, which is the underrated aspect of taking hits in 50-50 scenarios rather than being overly cautious and forcing yourself to be stuck with assets you don't want due to form and/or fixtures.

Rough: Still getting over the Cantwell miss. The GW could and should have worked out even better.

Rough: Checked score on Saturday afternoon as usual, seeing 9 points from Sterling - wtf ?? Turns out had somehow inadvertently hit the TC button on my phone, not seeing that status displayed 🙁 . Worst thing is, I did the same with Kane two seasons ago - at least he got an assist. And last season Sané TC fail... Well, good bye to a decent OR this season as well.

      It’s a simple one.

Robertson (6) out for Laporte (0) who is now likely long term out. Combined with a sterling captaincy, Ceballos not starting, didn’t help.

Smooth: brought KDB and Abraham in, transferred Perez, Jota out (freed up funds going Robbo->Kelly, but kept VVD). Team value up to 101.4m.

      Rough: Wrong captain choice... again.
      GW1 Salah C, 12pts ok but Sterling hat trick on V;
      GW2 Salah C again and blanks, Pukki V gets a hat trick;
      GW3 move to Sterling C, 8pts, Salah scores 15;

Smooth...shipped Kane for Kun and skippered. Already had KDB, TAA, Digne, Kelly so all our for 83 (-4) and up to OR 2.6K.

Here is a real smooth for you. Joe was actually talking about me recently, he mentioned someone who took a few hits and loaded up on City a couple of years ago and made a net profit of 20 odd points
Well in GW 4 I took a -16, sold, Kane, Son, Martial, Greenwood and Pedro, those 5 would have got me 12 points had I held them
I bought in De Bruyne, McGinn, Cantwell, Haller and Aguero, I triple captained Aguero and got 73 points from those 5, a whopping net profit of 45 points.
I got 99 points this week (minus the 16) so 83 points
I went from 1.8 million to just inside the top 250k and have a much better team going forward 🙂

Community Tournament, the Pundits Playoff : player registration now open!
Great news, we already have enough team managers for the competition to kick off, so anyone who wishes to take part can register their details via the form at the bottom of this Hot Topic.
If we have just 12 teams, the maximum number of players we can have will be 180. We may be able to move to 24 teams, but only if a) we have 24 volunteers step forward to be team managers and b) if we have minimum 240 players registering to take part.
A reminder that the first draft takes place during the IB after GW8, and the competition proper kicks off GW9. There will be a second article coming out in the next week or so confirming the first 12 Team Managers, and explaining the draft in more detail, so keep your eyes peeled.
Deadline for registration will be Monday 30th September, 9pm.
Player registration - https://forms.gle/uV8pCU1EEEDD7u5a9 , you will need to enter your FFS Username, email address, FPL ID# and FPL name so we can check the ID# matches up.
Team Manager applications, email punditsplayoff@gmail.com with your FFS Username, ID# and preferred pundit for your team name.

        Registered as a player.

Probably consider myself a midfielder in the 4.5-5.0 range - usually shows up with a 2- or 3-pointer depending on the defense's ability to keep a clean sheet (rarely gets any yellow cards), with the freak 8- or 11-pointer any random gameweek through the season. Good for your first or second spot on the bench, and will most likely get the aforementioned "big score" when all of your other starting XI plays.

My only concern is Aguero looks in super form and missing his points might be huge. What do you think? Sterling usually doesnt perform that well when Aguero starts.

Yeah i think thats a good move. I feel Sterling will score high but Aguero can be really explosive. How does your remaining team look like? Care to share?

Thanks. So going without Aguero from here on you think its okay? Sterling is definitely more secured starter but Aguero has been scoring even when coming of the bench.

Depends on tactics but I’m going with more budget friendly strikers and a big Mid with solid defence.

I see. Yeah i have 2 big ones in defence. the 3rd slot i plan to rotate between the Kelly, Lundstram & Pieters. I think iam defintely decided on a 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 formation. Haller looks good but still the fixtures are not that great i would say.

G2G? Already done transfers- cba to worry over the international break with missing players I want by 0.1 due to price rises.

      Pope
      VVD / Digne / AWB / Zich
      Salah / Sterling / KDB / Mount
      Haller / Pukki

Got 0.5 ITB to do VVD to TAA after Gw5

Laporte looks like he is out for a while. Pep did suggest that Walker might have to play CB if required till they can buy cover In January.

          Should start most matches imo

      D. Upgrade Greenwood (6.2)

      Current team:

      Pope
      Taa zinc digne wan b
      Sterling Salah mount Cantwell
      Kane pukki

      Button lund dendonker greenwood
      1ft 1.4 itb.

Is kdb worth bringing in? He looks fantastic but I have no idea how to bring him in? Is it worth loosing Kane with his fixtures? Any advice would be very welcome. Thank you
