Hughes involved again as Watford get first point of the season

Newcastle United 1 Watford 1

Goals: Fabian Schär (£5.0m) | Will Hughes (£5.5m)

Assists: Isaac Hayden (£4.5m)

Bonus: Hughes x3, Hayden x2, Ben Foster (£4.9m) x2

Watford earned their first point of the season with a draw at Newcastle light on both consistent attacking quality and significant Fantasy impact.

Will Hughes (£5.5m) gave the visitors the lead after just two minutes and the Hornets held out until close to half-time before Fabian Schär (£5.0m) swept home Isaac Hayden‘s (£4.5m) knockdown.

Replays showed that the ball came off Hayden’s arm and the goal should have been chalked off, but the decision stood as VAR continued its mystifyingly inconsistent start to the season.

And, in truth, a draw was all that Watford deserved from a game in which coach Javi Gracia opted for pragmatism over progressiveness in a bid to halt his side’s three-match losing streak in the league.

Gracia left Deulofeu on the bench for the trip to Newcastle

Gracia made his intentions clear in his starting line-up, consigning striker Gerard Deulofeu (£6.3m) to the bench and fielding three centre-halves and a lone striker in a team set up to drop deep, absorb pressure and play on the counterattack.

The Spaniard, found in 2.9% of Fantasy Premier League squads, is Watford’s most popular asset, but he has lost close to half of his Gameweek 1 ownership and an eight-minute cameo at St James’ Park will do little to halt that decline.

At least Hughes (0.3%) has offered attacking returns, figuring in both goals the Hornets have so far managed this season.

The midfielder followed up his assist in last week’s 3-1 loss to West Ham United by finding the net when Tom Cleverley‘s (£4.9m) shot was deflected into his path.

Watford have struggled to offer much attacking threat so far this season

Hughes’ effort was one of only three shots on target for the visitors, while Andre Gray (£5.9m) and Kiko Femenia (£4.5m) both missed good chances on the break before Newcastle equalised and then took control of the game in the second half.

Not that the Magpies were overly impressive going forward themselves.

Both sides had 13 attempts, eight of which were in the area respectively, and created a chance every 7.4 minutes.

The home team did manage two more shots on target than Watford, forcing Ben Foster (£4.9m) into some smart work to deny both Miguel Almirón (£5.9m) and Hayden in a performance that earned the goalkeeper two bonus points.

But Newcastle’s lack of an end product – three goals from four matches – means their attacking assets remain attractive to only the most tribal, or wilfully optimistic, of Fantasy managers.

Almirón’s efforts called Ben Foster into action in Gameweek 4

Manager Steve Bruce’s plans were hampered by injuries to wide men Matt Ritchie (£5.5m) and Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m), meaning first starts for Christian Atsu (£5.4m) and Jetro Willems (£4.5m).

That did little to improve the supply line to striker Joelinton (£5.9m), who was the match-winner in Gameweek 3’s surprise victory over Spurs.

The Brazilian could not muster a single shot on target against Watford, his two attempts matched by defenders Schär and Craig Dawson (£5.0m).

At least Hayden produced a first return of the season for his 5.7% ownership – the joint-highest figure among Newcastle players alongside centre-half Jamaal Lascelles (£4.5m) – although that popularity is most likely down to his bargain bucket pricing in FPL.

Fabian Schär showed his aerial threat once again, scoring Newcastle’s only goal against Watford

And Schär’s goal again demonstrated his attacking potential, having scored four times, and provided one assist, last season.

The Swiss international, however, was substituted after 84 minutes as a precautionary measure, according to Bruce.

“He was feeling not great at half-time and had dizziness in spells, which was a bit of a concern, and in the end he wasn’t great when I spoke to him in a water break when one of the players was injured. There was a sort of vacancy about him, so I hope he’s okay. We’ll see how he is. He was not feeling well, he was just complaining to the doctor about being dizzy, and that was at half-time.” – Steve Bruce

Schär is still expected to join up with the Switzerland squad, but even without an international break to stall our Fantasy dealings, there is likely to be no rush to acquire assets from either side any time soon.

Watford will face Arsenal and Manchester City over the next two Gameweeks, with tricky trips to Wolves and Spurs just round the corner as well.

And the Magpies have to play Liverpool, Leicester City and Manchester United before the second round of international fixtures rears its ugly head in early October.

For once, country before club could work in both managers’ favour, buying them some much-needed time to work on the deficiencies, both defensive and attacking, hampering their respective sides.

Gracia is certainly hoping the enforced break can be a force for good.

“Last season we started really well, this season the first four games we have only got one point. Now we have a break and it’s a good time to work and prepare better for the next game.” – Javi Gracia

Newcastle, with four points from their last two outings, are clearly in a better place than Watford.

But as things stand, neither set of players currently represent much Fantasy fruit worth picking.

A major haul by PEA or Pepe is required to break the template. You'd also need Sterling and Salah to blank vs some easy opposition.

This is a total myth imo. If your team is in need of a wildcard do it. If the template breaks what then ? Follow the new one and get the same range of points as the majority? The way to push up the ranks is to be non template.

disagree. early on building tv and staying with pack important as 3-4 games isnt enough to make big judgement calls with much degree of confidence. players become “template” after one haul and its hard to make the case for players performing well in underlying terms as the sample size is so small

later in season playing chips well, managing fixtures + having use of a bigger data set will set apart those who know what theyre doing from those that dont

          1. George Sillett
            • 8 Years

Who sets "the template" though ?
Is it set by a few on here who the majority latch onto and keep quoting a selective number of players as the "must haves" creating the usual herd mentality ?
What if you are ahead of the pack already by being non template ?

read my post again i answered almost all of this. by defending “template” i just mean to infer that early bandwagons are fairly easy to justify relative to taking random punts on non-bandwagons

I've read it 5 times already . There are as many early bandwagons that go south as there ones that come off.
Equally why should punts on non bandwagons be classed as random ?

    Wildcard team..

    A)
    Pope – Button
    Digne – Zinchenko – Trent – Dunk – Lundstrum
    Salah – DeBruyne – Sterling – Mount – Cantwell
    Pukki – Haller – Greenwood

    OR

    B)
    Pope – Button
    SOYUNCU – Zinchenko – Trent – Dunk – Lundstrum
    Salah – DeBruyne – Sterling – MCGINN – Cantwell
    Pukki – Haller – BARNES

    0.4M In the bank

Different. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. I prefer Pepe over Auba for Arsenal coverage.

          James + Auba > Pukki + Pepe
          Hayden > Cantwell

You seem convinced on Mane over Salah. Go for it. Not for me. I don't think I can use the 1.0m better considering the difference in points between the two.

        1. need a WC
        2. sort Perez and Jota for -4 (budget 12.8) to

Jiminez and C Wilson are both great picks imo - I think they’ll slowly prove to be better picks than the current favourites over the next few weeks/months

Yeah, I feel that too - I feel swapping Jimi for one of the flavours of the month like a sideways move......

I really like Callum Wilson. 3 A's & 1 G so far is a good return and he's the focal point of attack.

I had Jota for the first 3 GW's and just feel him like Jimenez are an Avoid due to fixture congestion with the Europa League. We've seen it time and again with the Thurs night then Sunday fixture

Yeah europa reasoning is fair. I sold Jota too. Just feel like Jiminez has the class to keep ticking along, although a form option may well prove a good transfer for a while. But yeah, Wilson is staying in my team for sure, attacking return in every game so far and dropped 0.2...

Not sure i need to do a wildcard here so might just do a -4 for Laporte & Lanzini > Ota /Kolasinac & D Silva.

            Heaton / Button

            VVD / Digne / Laporte* / Rico / Montyoa

            Salah / Sterling / Mount / Lanzini * / Dendonker

            Kane / Pukki / Greenwood

            Thoughts?

Thoughts on AWB and Robertson to TAA and Otamendi for a -4? Hits for defenders obviously not great, but would be priced out of these moves with a TAA rise. Also Newcastle’s left flank looks a lot worse than their right statistically...

So currently this is how the template looks like. Very balanced with good fixtures for all.

              Pope 4.0
              TAA Digne 4.5 (4.5 4.0)
              Salah Sterling KDB Mount (Cantwell)
              Pukki Haller Barnes

Howver If one of auba/kane starts going on a crazy run of form who would you sacrifice from midfeild big 3? (salah/kdb/sterling)

Surely we wont go entire season without a premium striker

thing is it's still early days and the rank are very congested at the moment...if you get a (c) call on correct on a premium striker and the likes of Sterling/Salah fail it's a massive swing. Just look at last week with Kun(c).

Yh budget strikers are in form right now but dont expect them to main that level of consistency.

However if premiums are in form and get going they could go on a really explosive run . if you anticipate and get them earlier you will shoot up the rankings

“explosive runs” are mostly explained by fixtures and coincidence. the top 2 have premium options in midfield. no reason to concern yourself with premium strikers unless something unusual happens

THere's no discriminating between premium mids or strikers in this respect. The thing is, if you have more than three, the captaincy factors are diluted, and those explosions have to be nuclear to provide value over a spread of funds to in-for mid priced assets

no one said you need to do it for 38 weeks.

It worked in week 2 with Mane/Pukki. It worked last week with Kun. Besides, you can still own those players and gamble with (c).

there are not many gw’s in which the highest expected points will come from a player other than salah or sterling, and if they do it will be from kane/auba and probably marginal. using ft’s to change team structure to accomodate for that is prob not optimal, and owning 3+ premiums isnt good value per mill

prefer to find an edge on making good decisions not bad ones (and hoping to be lucky)

Marginal? Kun(c) swing last week was 13 pts alone vs Sterling. Ask me. I capt Sterling.

Each to their own I guess. I've played for 12 yrs, and have always fallen short of top 1k. I found its easy to get a top 10k finish. Beyond that its luck and gamble/gut.

The point is that you are not necessarily maximising returns over short periods of gameweeks. There are opportunities where premium strikers will score higher than similarly priced premium mids. It is getting these decisions right which affects your OR.

                Thoughts on this WC Team?

                3-4-3

                Pope - Button
TAA, Digne, Zinck, - Lundstrum, Kelly
Salah, Sterling, De Bruyne, Mcginn - Dendonk
                Haller, Pukki, Barnes

Cant afford to upgrade Dendonk to Cantwell.
                Leaves 0.1 in the bank...

Prefer to keep WC for another month at least

Who would you rather out of this lot?
Kane King AWB or Kun Barnes Lundstram

Will assess after intl break. Could also do Auba instead of Kun with their very kind fixtures

Well you're comparing an attacking full back to an attacking midfielder, so you'd expect Mount to come out on top in several areas, but its worth noting TAA's xA, final third touches etc are higher, and he'll pick up an additional four points every time Liverpool keep a clean sheet.

Not really pulling the trigger but was feeling bored and playing around with my team and I came up with this:

My current team is (with 0.7 ITB and 1 FT):

                  Pope Heaton
                  AWB Dunk Diop Boly Lund
                  Sterling Salah KDB Martial Dendonkey
                  Pukki King Haller

Playing around with the team I find I can actually get this side out for 0.0ITB

                  Pope Button
                  Soyuncu Dunk Diop Lund Kelly
Sterling KDB Son James Dendonkey(or other 4.5)
                  Aguero Auba Ayew

Considering the fixtures going forward, could be a very big differential to have Son and Auba as well as 3 City .... or could still get Mane instead of Sterling?

Thoughts on this? Would any of you play a WC? I actually wasn't considering a WC so soon into the season, but this is very tempting!

That defence would concern me every week whichever ones you play. Would rethink with at least TAA as a defensive premium.

Yeah, but I would rotate and there hasn't really been convincing defensive displays by any team this season to justify spending 6.5-7.0m on a defender?

I take what your saying though! Could do Mane for Sterling and Greenwood for Ayew and maybe get one good defender in?

Are there any changes you would make to the attack?

Yeah valid point, but I can easily integrate or have Liverpool players (like suggested above), I can do Mane instead of Sterling and upgrade a defender, Or I can do Lacazette instead of Auba and have TAA at the back.....any other options/suggestions welcome?.....I'm really just trying to keep myself busy, won't act on it for now, just wanna keep active on the Fantasy during the international break!
