Hughes involved again as Watford get first point of the season

Newcastle United 1 Watford 1

Goals: Fabian Schär (£5.0m) | Will Hughes (£5.5m)

Assists: Isaac Hayden (£4.5m)

Bonus: Hughes x3, Hayden x2, Ben Foster (£4.9m) x2

Watford earned their first point of the season with a draw at Newcastle light on both consistent attacking quality and significant Fantasy impact.

Will Hughes (£5.5m) gave the visitors the lead after just two minutes and the Hornets held out until close to half-time before Fabian Schär (£5.0m) swept home Isaac Hayden‘s (£4.5m) knockdown.

Replays showed that the ball came off Hayden’s arm and the goal should have been chalked off, but the decision stood as VAR continued its mystifyingly inconsistent start to the season.

And, in truth, a draw was all that Watford deserved from a game in which coach Javi Gracia opted for pragmatism over progressiveness in a bid to halt his side’s three-match losing streak in the league.

Gracia left Deulofeu on the bench for the trip to Newcastle

Gracia made his intentions clear in his starting line-up, consigning striker Gerard Deulofeu (£6.3m) to the bench and fielding three centre-halves and a lone striker in a team set up to drop deep, absorb pressure and play on the counterattack.

The Spaniard, found in 2.9% of Fantasy Premier League squads, is Watford’s most popular asset, but he has lost close to half of his Gameweek 1 ownership and an eight-minute cameo at St James’ Park will do little to halt that decline.

At least Hughes (0.3%) has offered attacking returns, figuring in both goals the Hornets have so far managed this season.

The midfielder followed up his assist in last week’s 3-1 loss to West Ham United by finding the net when Tom Cleverley‘s (£4.9m) shot was deflected into his path.

Watford have struggled to offer much attacking threat so far this season

Hughes’ effort was one of only three shots on target for the visitors, while Andre Gray (£5.9m) and Kiko Femenia (£4.5m) both missed good chances on the break before Newcastle equalised and then took control of the game in the second half.

Not that the Magpies were overly impressive going forward themselves.

Both sides had 13 attempts, eight of which were in the area respectively, and created a chance every 7.4 minutes.

The home team did manage two more shots on target than Watford, forcing Ben Foster (£4.9m) into some smart work to deny both Miguel Almirón (£5.9m) and Hayden in a performance that earned the goalkeeper two bonus points.

But Newcastle’s lack of an end product – three goals from four matches – means their attacking assets remain attractive to only the most tribal, or wilfully optimistic, of Fantasy managers.

Almirón’s efforts called Ben Foster into action in Gameweek 4

Manager Steve Bruce’s plans were hampered by injuries to wide men Matt Ritchie (£5.5m) and Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.4m), meaning first starts for Christian Atsu (£5.4m) and Jetro Willems (£4.5m).

That did little to improve the supply line to striker Joelinton (£5.9m), who was the match-winner in Gameweek 3’s surprise victory over Spurs.

The Brazilian could not muster a single shot on target against Watford, his two attempts matched by defenders Schär and Craig Dawson (£5.0m).

At least Hayden produced a first return of the season for his 5.7% ownership – the joint-highest figure among Newcastle players alongside centre-half Jamaal Lascelles (£4.5m) – although that popularity is most likely down to his bargain bucket pricing in FPL.

Fabian Schär showed his aerial threat once again, scoring Newcastle’s only goal against Watford

And Schär’s goal again demonstrated his attacking potential, having scored four times, and provided one assist, last season.

The Swiss international, however, was substituted after 84 minutes as a precautionary measure, according to Bruce.

“He was feeling not great at half-time and had dizziness in spells, which was a bit of a concern, and in the end he wasn’t great when I spoke to him in a water break when one of the players was injured. There was a sort of vacancy about him, so I hope he’s okay. We’ll see how he is. He was not feeling well, he was just complaining to the doctor about being dizzy, and that was at half-time.” – Steve Bruce

Schär is still expected to join up with the Switzerland squad, but even without an international break to stall our Fantasy dealings, there is likely to be no rush to acquire assets from either side any time soon.

Watford will face Arsenal and Manchester City over the next two Gameweeks, with tricky trips to Wolves and Spurs just round the corner as well.

And the Magpies have to play Liverpool, Leicester City and Manchester United before the second round of international fixtures rears its ugly head in early October.

For once, country before club could work in both managers’ favour, buying them some much-needed time to work on the deficiencies, both defensive and attacking, hampering their respective sides.

Gracia is certainly hoping the enforced break can be a force for good.

“Last season we started really well, this season the first four games we have only got one point. Now we have a break and it’s a good time to work and prepare better for the next game.” – Javi Gracia

Newcastle, with four points from their last two outings, are clearly in a better place than Watford.

But as things stand, neither set of players currently represent much Fantasy fruit worth picking.

Thoughts on this as possible WC team. Big call would be getting Firmino over Salah or Mané and bringing in Pépé to midfield as bit of differential to template!

With Arsenal’s appealing fixtures in the next 2 months are we clearer as to who to bring in? Will Laca play regularly, can Pépé match KDB in the same price bracket and will Auba’s prospects be thwarted if playing wide left? What about Spurs’ attaching assets - is Son the one to bring in or Kane or Alli?

With iwobi + mkhi gone there's reiss Nelson or willock covering the front 3,surely,surely that means less rotation for their first choice attackers.
Surely pepe is the one who could prove most explosive/value based on last two games... 70% and 40% xgi and playing an advanced role. I think lacazette should benefit from more minutes than last year but could draw back for wingers to press ahead
Ceballos is more dependant on mad tactical choices, play 3 cms and ozil getting minutes but could still be value.

Has anyone else noticed that the option to make videos go to full screen on the official FPL site seems to have disappeared? Or is there something I'm missing???

Really happy I made early transfers in this IB, as I would have otherwise been priced out.

    Did Rash + AWB --> Abraham + TAA -4

Rash dropped twice (which would have costed me 0.1 SV)
AWB might drop again (which would have costed me 0.1 SV)
TAA looks set to rise twice (+0.1 SV)
Abraham already rised twice (+0.1 SV)

A total difference of 0.4 SV... So one might say early transfers is a bad idea. But I definetely believe, that in this case, it was a solid idea. Surely it's worth an additional -4 in case one of my players gets an injury. Also got a decent bench to cover (Mina and Ceballos on the bench next gameweek).

As long as Abraham keeps up his good form, that sounds like a good decision.

Yeah. Would have been hesitant if I had not had a decent bench. But thought I needed it going into IB with no WC and some injury prone players in the team (ie. Martial who I hope recover during IB)

Do you have your WC in hand? I always make early transfers when I've my WC to rescue me. One of the benefits of playing it late. Post WC I button down the hatches and make transfers on Fridays only

I do not.. Used it for GW3. Bad decision. Rash decision. But not to bad as I got insane TV / SV right now. I can afford at least two injuries in my team with Ceballos and Mina on the bench

It's ok so long as you pick up no injuries over the IB. If you do could be very difficult to fix.

Ye I’m doing a similar thing with KWP to TAA and risking it.

As it’s likely to swing either side I’ll always take the risk for 0.2 SV.

    Salah, Mane, KDB, Sterling, Aguero.

You can squeeze four of them in there but realistically there's only room for three.

    Who's for the scrap heap?

I'd scrap Mane and Salah for the next 5-6 even though I'm a Pool fan. City triple up looks tasty in that period. Then switch to Salah if Aguero's gametime is limited

Apart from here, where do you guys go for FPL content? Seems a lot of podcasts out there and only so many hours in the week.

Fml fpl, always cheating, 59th ministers, WGTA, FPL surgery etc

whose advice/content to you value the most?

Which of the content providers has consistently good OR?

          VVD robbo digne Lundstram (rico)
          Kdb sterling salah trossard (dendoncker)
          Haller pukki (greenwood)

I have 1 FT, 0.1mil in bank. I was thinking with nothing too pressing....robbo to TAA?

Robinson possibly worth a quick look now that he's fallen to 5.3m but upcoming fixtures obviously not so good.

WC to get the below. What do you think?

            De gea
            Kelly - mings - diop
            Salah - debrune - sterling - genduzi - /cantwell/
            Abraham(or barnes) - aguero -

            ——
            Pope - greenwood - lundstram - ward

Defence is bad. At minimum would pick one of Pope/De Gea and move saving into defs

Not sure about this team at all. I'd rethink that defence and a couple of the midfield too.

Giving up too much in defense to chase all those big $ attackers
Would take Barnes over Abraham based on form and fixtures

To get the big names in midfield i have to get that kind of defence..
