Abraham enters FPL forward debate as Chelsea concede again

Our final Scout Notes article of Gameweek 4 reflects on an eventful game at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea’s defence once again the focus of our attention.

Chelsea 2-2 Sheffield United

  • Goals: Tammy Abraham (£7.2m) x2 | Callum Robinson (£5.3m), Kurt Zouma (£4.9m) own-goal
  • Assists: Christian Pulisic (£7.5m), Jorginho (£5.0m) | Enda Stevens (£5.0m), Robinson
  • Bonus: Abraham – 3, Jorginho – 2, Stevens, Robinson – 1

Last week we wrote an article on Emerson Palmieri (£5.5m), praising the left-back’s attacking threat but also expressing concern about Chelsea’s defensive fragility.

The Blues’ first three games were against attack-minded teams in the shape of Manchester United, Leicester City and Norwich City, so the visit of Sheffield United – who are ranked bottom or joint-bottom for shots in the box and efforts on target this season – was a good test to see if Frank Lampard’s side could register a shut-out against a less-offensive team ahead of their favourable fixture run from Gameweek 7 onwards.

The usual frailties were apparent again, though, with another second-half capitulation costing the Blues points.

Six of the nine goals Chelsea have conceded this season have come after the break, while only Norwich have shipped more Premier League goals in 2019/20.

Callum Robinson (£5.3m) had already missed an excellent headed chance by the time he tucked away a cross from Enda Stevens (£5.0m) and it was the ‘out of position’ FPL midfielder, starting his fourth successive game up front for the Blades, who provided the teasing delivery that Kurt Zouma (£4.9m) sliced past his own goalkeeper late in the game.

Speaking after the game, Lampard said:

It’s not defence, it is conceding as a team. The lack of concentration and mistakes for the goals are moments, you defend as a team as much as attack as a team.

We conceded because you switch off in a game that should be comfortably seen off at 2-0. That is no disrespect to Sheffield United, 2-0 is not the end of the story. I was clear with the players on that at half-time, this can either be 3-0 and nice, or a potential 2-2.

Disappointing factor is the first goal more than anything, because it allowed it but we only have ourselves to look at as a group and not individually.

Lampard gave Fikayo Tomori (£4.5m) his first league start in a Chelsea shirt and the former Derby County boss was later asked if he was concerned about Chelsea’s previous defensive pairing of Zouma and Andreas Christensen (£5.0m) at centre-half, replying:

No, I wouldn’t say I was worried about it. I am trying to work all over the team to get the right combinations. Rudiger is fit after the international break, gives me another choice. We can isolate goals and talk about centre-backs or whatever, it’s not, it’s the team. When we score goals, sometimes it’s because of the centre-back playing the ball quickly. I am not relating the centre-back issue. I trust the four centre-backs I have completely, we are just in a moment where obviously we need to stop conceding goals.

I think Tomori played very well for me last year and training at a very high level. There is competition at centre-back, he deserved to play and I thought he played well. It was just a choice.

Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.0m) again struggled at right-back and both of the goals came from crosses on his side.

Chelsea at least have reinforcements in the shape of Reece James (£5.0m), Antonio Rudiger (£6.0m) and N’Golo Kante (£5.0m) who will be fit soon, although the Blues’ defensive problems seem to run deeper than merely unavailable personnel right now.

While Jorginho (£5.0m) and Mateo Kovacic (£5.5m) impressed in the double-pivot, there was less joy for the more popular Chelsea midfield assets further forward.

Christian Pulisic (£7.5m), Mason Mount (£6.4m) and Ross Barkley (£5.8m) created one chance between them, with Mount nullified on the Chelsea left by the resolute Sheffield United backline and Barkley delivering one of the frustrating performances that he has sadly become synonymous with.

Tammy Abraham (£7.2m) at least carried on where he left off at Carrow Road, showing an opportunistic streak to first pounce on a fumble by Dean Henderson (£4.5m) and then take advantage of a mix-up between Jack O’Connell (£4.5m) and John Egan (£4.5m) to double Chelsea’s lead.

Henderson denied Abraham a hat-trick with a superb save after the break.

Lampard said of his young striker:

I’m delighted with Tammy. He has a really great attitude in training, a desire to score goals and his all-round game was really good as well. Myself and the staff are working closely with him on little bits of his game where I think he can be even better and he’s been very receptive to that.

After successive 13-point hauls, the Chelsea forward is the most-bought player of Gameweek 5 at the time of writing.

Cynics may say that all four of his goals have come against defences that played in the Championship last season but a ‘flat-track bully’ is arguably what we Fantasy managers want, particularly if targeting the more winnable fixtures – of which Chelsea have several from Gameweek 7 onwards.

While Norwich and Villa languish in the bottom three, Sheffield United are now up to eighth.

They are unquestionably the more secure of the three promoted clubs from a defensive perspective and have conceded fewer big chances, shots in the box and efforts on target than Daniel Farke and Dean Smith’s sides this season.

There will be frustration, indeed, that it was two uncharacteristic individual errors, rather than anything Chelsea created, that saw the Blades fall 2-0 down.

Chris Wilder said after full-time:

I thought we deserved it but I was disappointed with their goals. We could have done better on both. Take nothing away from the boys. How can you? Still, we know we should have kept them out.

There was nothing wrong with our shape to begin with. But we stood off them a bit and then gave some silly things away. But the boys, all of them, dug in and dug it out. And that’s what being at this level is all about.

Oli McBurnie (£5.9m) for David McGoldrick (£5.5m) was Wilder’s only change for this match, although the summer signing from Swansea didn’t have much of an impact and failed to have a single shot in a 63-minute showing.

Sheffield United sit second-bottom of our Season Ticker over the next ten Gameweeks and interest may be limited in their FPL players over this run – with the exception of the benchable John Lundstram (£4.2m), of course.

On the evidence of what we have seen so far this season, however, Fantasy managers can expect the Blades to be no pushovers when our other attacking assets come up against Wilder’s troops.

You kept Martial through his injury last week. Why would you get rid now? I ditched last week because I doubted whether he'd be back and keeping him for 2 weeks is too much with the fixtures turning.

I did Jota to Barnes early last week. Then Martial got injured. So I didn't want to take a hit and was hoping Greenwood plays instead. Now I can downgrade him for free.

Yes this is what I was thinking about,
Awb, Martial, Greenwood to Haller, 6m Midfielder, Hanley
          Best Midfielder under 6?
          McGinn or Trossard maybe.
But not sure if they will outscore Awb by much to justify any hit.

Haller. He is a unit. Looks like a player who is using West Ham this season as a good stepping stone for a bigger move. I think he is the real deal.

As a hammers fan, I'm not completely sold on Haller yet. His 3 goals have been 6 yard tap ins against weak defences. As an FPL asset he'll be good as he'll get both goals and assists, however, how may goals I'm not sure. But I can see our attacking mids profiting more from his positional play, ability to hold on to ball and play others in.

The DZ is a proper DZ this morning!
Setting up my team for GW5 in the hope of no more injuries (Laportes to Otamendi on FT). All my players bar Pukki & TAA are away from home so expecting a very average GW:

    Pope
    TAA(C) / Otamendi / PVA
    Sterling / Pepe / Lanzini / Mount
    Aguero / Barnes / Pukki
    (Button, Pieters, Cantwell, Rico)

The captaincy choice is going to be a tough one for GW5. So many good options.

Norwich defence was awful against West Ham. City could put 5 or 6 past them. On the other hand you could see Liverpool going off against Newcastle and obliterating then. I think you have to just go with one and hope it pays off on a week like this.

The RMT on the site for Sokratis in the members area seems totally unrealistic. What clean sheets are Arsenal actually expected to be getting? How is he one of the best-ish defenders?
No attacking threat, really, and I see few clean sheets coming from the gunners.

What numbers are you looking at? I see all Arsenal defenders at 19 points or under over the next six games - that’s what I would expect to see.

Hey mate, I've pulled the trigger on my wild card. Off go the Toffee trio, and I'm gambling on Pukki having shot his load with Vardy getting into his stride. I'm also calculating it's Wood's turn to haul, taking the points off bandwagon Barnes. I think Wilson has been constantly underrated and is a good pick at 0.2 discount, although with Vardy in my team I'm not having him myself.

Now, you'll bloody love this - I've just bottled out of going Salah-less, so instead, I'm dumping ...... Sterling!

It's a huge risk. I'm keeping Kev and Kun. I think when Kun plays he hauls but he'll be rested and rotated more than Raz. If it looks like Kun's time is reduced too much an easy 2FT will bring Raz back

True, I don't have KDB and he's in annoyingly good form! Think I still prefer a City defender alongside two attackers though, so one has to be left out...cant have em all mate!

Yeh, instead of my triple-City attack, I've got Zinky.
The options are really 3 of Salah, Sterling, KdB and Aguero. No way can you get 4 without having 11 supporting stinkers.
Well, there is a way, but I'm also spurning a super-weak defence. Given the dearth of clean sheets so far I can see the argument, but I'm confident Liverpool will come good, so TAA and Robbo stay.

      A. So is McGinn and Soyuncu to
4.6 mid and Otamendi ok for a hit?

      B. Another option for
-8 is Pukki Kelly and Soyuncu
To 4.5 Fodder Otamendi and Matip

      C. Neither of the above hold much appeal. Hold FT.

A just means Lund rotation with a mid instead of a defender.
So it will be 352 or 442

        B. Means going from 352 to 451

That I have not looked at yet. Would have to work on a rotation with Lund. Will need to check the ticker.
          B. Gives a weakest starting player Price wise of Matip Otamendi or McGinn.
          A. Has a weakness it that the the 11th player is 4.6 mid or Lund.
But B is going to cost -8

Hey guys! Being a bit repetitive but trying to get as many opinions as i can. Would you WC this team? If so please give us tips on the type of formation you would go for the WC team and also who would you bring in? Thank you all so much.

      Ryan Button
      Coleman VVD Laporte Guilbert Lundstram
      Salah Sterling KDB Perez Lanzini
      Pukki Wickham Greenwood.

If that was me, I probably would wildcard that yes.

Always get 2 playing strikers. Even if your 5th midfielder is fodder but still plays. Your striker can still nab you a goal.

        I would look at:
        TAA
        Digne
        Otamendi/Zinchenko
Burnley D (their fixtures are great)
        Barnes
        Haller
Mané if you can’t afford Salah
        Aguero
Arsenal forwards as they have really good fixtures for the next 10 weeks or so. But it’s Arsenal so beware.

Thank you so much Kub3. Would you say its too risky to keep the same formation and have Auba up front for the nice fixtures? Would still have the other big hitters (Salah, Raz, TAA, Digne/Zinch) but means that i will need to field 3 x 4.5 players. The plan is to downgrade Auba to 2 cheap strikers if Arsenal is not firing. I was looking at:

          Pope Button
          TAA Digne Mings Lowton Lunds
          Salah Raz KDB Mount Cantwell
          Auba Wick Nketiah

            • 5 Years

Possibly. Remember those three 4.5 D won’t be playing most weeks if you’re playing 3-5-2, only 1 would and then you can rotate that 1 with the other 2 depending on fixtures.

How much money do you have left with that team?

            1. De Gea is GOAT
              • 7 Years
              4 years, 7 months ago

With the team above im all out of funds unfortunately. The formation will vary depending on fixtures. So for exmaple next GW i would be playing Mings Lowton Lunds and drop Cantwell. Following week can be Lunds, Lowton, Cantwell and drop Mings. Risky game that could pay off if ARS hit top form. I just really want an ARS player for the fixtures and cannot see anyone else but Auba atm. Unless Pepe starts firing. Would you risk it?

It might work. You’ll still be playing Salah, Sterling and KDB to pick up the slack if doesn’t work. I mean not many people have an Arsenal forward right now and Auba is a great pick. They have the fixtures but remember Arsenal have not been very good for quite a while now and they can be a Jekyll and hide team. They do have extra firepower this season so they might go on a run. They were decent against Spurs. It’s risky but could pay off. If you’re feeling it then go for it. If nobody in your mini league has a team like this and you’re behind then you could catch up quite quickly if Arsenal fire

Roger that! No one in mini league will have a similar team so i might go for it. Could pay off really well just like it could go completely wrong. If it does its an easy fix with a couple of transfers. Thank you so much for your help man. Mind if i ask how your team is going?

Son as well. If you can fit him in you could ahead of the curve before he goes on a tear and his price rockets. He looked absolutely magnificent the other day.

If you’re going to play 3-5-2 go with 3 D from City/Liverpool/Everton and then 2 budget options
That gives you the flexibility to buy a semi-decent 5th mid you will play every week.

Oh absolutely. You wouldn't even rotate him in the upcoming fixtures. If you have an extra 0.1 jangling in your pocket you might go with Pieters, and if you have Pope, you might wonder about doubling up on Burnley defence, but it makes sense to have at least one Burnley defender - they're the best value now they're proving to be as resilient as the pre-EL Burnley defence of 2017-18.

Hey guys! Anyone eyeing Auba for the fixture swing? If so how do you fit him in along with Salah, Sterling, KDB, TAA, Digne. Thanks all 🙂

What a team. Love the Mane > Salah pick. Was this your original team from the start or WC already? Indeed we can't have all the big hitters. Might need to reshuffle and set up a better formation. Currently on WC:

                  Pope Button
                  TAA Digne Mings Lowton Lunds
                  Salah Sterling KDB Mount Dend
                  Auba Wick Green

Surprising that Emery left him out and started with 3 defensive midfielders. Madness, so who knows?

With that front three he believes he needs defensive balance further back, I’d expect him to play a lot of the easy games but not all their games especially once Europa comes around

Yeah but that's not balanced and the match demonstrated that very clearly. Oddly, previously he put Ceballos on the wing. The obvious midfield is Guendouzi and Torreira at the back and Ceballos linking the front 3.

I don’t see Xhaka becoming a bench player anytime soon though, Torreira is on there the most with Guendouzi playing. I believe it is going to be a lot of rotation, not sure if you agree

Well 2 of those 3 DMs. I think it's safer for Xhaka to kick his heels on the bench than kick opponents and get sent off. Guen and Xhaka Khan if he can behave himself would be fine, but a creative midfielder - Ceballos or Ozil is required ahead of them.

And what works and what Emery sees don’t always align!

Not a single player is nailed.....emery has a habit of rotating ...he did that at psg too...i think ecerytime we will see new starting 11
