Which of Burnley’s FPL assets appeal for their favourable fixtures?

Burnley sit top of our Season Ticker for the next ten Gameweeks, with their first fixture after the international break kicking off a run of matches in which they meet only one of the ‘big six’ (a far from watertight Chelsea side) between now and the end of November.

Those Fantasy managers who place a lot of emphasis on favourable fixture runs will, therefore, be surely considering a move for a Burnley asset or two ahead of Gameweek 5.

Sean Dyche’s troops have had a tricky start to the campaign but haven’t disgraced themselves so far, following up a 3-0 win over Southampton with a battling defeat at Arsenal and then a 1-1 draw with Wolves – a game they really should have had won before Raul Jimenez‘s (£7.4m) last-gasp penalty.

The Clarets were outclassed against Liverpool in Gameweek 4 but the Reds and Manchester City are already starting to pull clear of the chasing pack and again look to be in a class of their own following their dominance in 2018/19.

There is plenty of encouragement for Fantasy managers, then, particularly as Burnley are free of the Europa League commitments that plagued them at the start of last season.

The Clarets’ form had picked up at the back-end of 2018/19 with Dyche going back to basics with a settled side and a 4-4-2, an approach he has carried into this campaign.

Our Members’ article below looks at who the stand-out Burnley performers have been this season, asking whether Ashley Barnes‘ (£6.7m) form can continue and whether Dyche’s side can keep a handful of clean sheets over the coming months.

Lessons learned from Gameweek 4

He has to be the best option in that price bracket, but found myself very annoyed at the weekend when he was sat on the bench. Emery is so negative

More possibility of clean sheets with Matip and attacking returns from Digne.

I would say ship the other two immediately. It is already difficult to afford TAA if you do not have him. Just one rise of 0.1m going to that much more difficult to get him.

      Do it!

    Rotating Soy Lunds and Cantwell.

Tried to play with it a little bit and can't really decide.

      A few thoughts:

      Would absolutely not have Kane

Like David Silva in there with him resting during the IB

I would say find a way to double up on Mane + Salah with both of them resting during the IB (instead of Sterling for instance who's playing) I think Aguero & Silva + Mane & Salah is better than Aguero & Silva & Sterling + Mane

Get arsenal-defenders playing away, far away from your team. Montoya (for instance) is a better and cheaper option for this gw (imo)

I would also not have Tarkowski, no need in spending that extra 0.5 there. Either take Lowton if you want a Burnley defender, or go with somebody from Villa or West Ham (Diop/Masuaku?)

      best of luck

While I don't disagree with you in general, I posted this earlier which is a reason why he isn't for this GW (for those considering bringing him in now)

"Just a heads up for those wanting to bring Firmino in (or owning him)

Firmino will most likely not start vs Newcastle. Although the schedule says he plays on the 10th, which is the same as England, Portugal and others, they play in LA. Which means their kick-off is at 4:30 am British time, and they don't get off the field until around 6.30am (again, British time). On the 11th that is. Then he's supposed to play again on the 14th. At 12:30. 8470 km ( 5263 miles) away. (absolute madness for a friendly btw, but whatever):

Maybe Ederson could play because 1. he has 6h rest extra and 2. He's a keeper. but I don't see Firmino starting."

Also, as somebody cleverly pointed out in the replies, we (Liverpool) have a huge CL game midweek.

Who says Firmino plays in both games? Liverpool used to charter a plane to bring back their Brazilian players.

Nobody. But even if he doesn't play he's on the bench. Warming up in a completely different time zone. Liverpool won't charter a flight (last time they did they informed of it much earlier) and even if they did it still doesn't give him nearly enough time to rest.

Also even with the chartered plane last season Klopp usually started him on the bench. And as pointed out, we've got a big CL game mid week. No reason not to give Origi, or even Shaqiri a start at home to Newcastle with Mane and Salah completely rested

Lovely trolling attempt. If a player starts 4 matches, you don't ignore the first match because the other player didn't play in it.

            Salah - started 4 - 9 PPM
            Mane - started 3 - 8 PPM

You do. A large share of his points came in a plum fixture where if the other one played, it's fair to say it's likely he would've shared some of Salah's points. If that single game is increasing Salah's PPM from 8 to 9, the same could've happened to Mane had he played.

Actually, now I reflect, slaughter’s original (very welcome) analysis was PPmatch?

Which then makes the subsequent comment about PP90 rather contradictory.

Unless of course there is a marked distinction to be drawn between the two.

It's just become that way hadn't it, but xg/game would be more useful. I guess because it's a more theoretical figure it's used in the abstract of 90mins rather than single integer matches?!

Pp90 is less relevant because you score points by game. So it doesn't matter if aguera had highest pp90 if he plays 70 each week and Salah 88. A couple of other caveats is that more goals are scored towards end of games so subs are boosted by this, and all are subject to the fixtures played (ie not all 90 or even games are equal, hence the Mane point vs Norwich).

My favourite stat (but inaccurate over small sample) is fantasy goal involvement as it implicitly factors in fixture difficulty/team performance. You've then got to use your brain on expected minutes etc but it gives you an idea if the player is on the pitch when a goal is scored, how many points on average can you expect to get from that.

            • 14 Years

Because it's skewed towards players that are either subbed early or subbed on. If a player scores in two substitute appearances totalling 40 mins, and blanks when starting in the 3rd game, he looks like a world beater compared to the player who starts and scored 3 goals in the same 3 games. In FPL terms, the latter is the better option.

I obviously appreciate that PP90 in a pre sense is only a division of PPM. I don’t think that is what he meant?

In which case I also appreciate that Auf was simply restating the original point and understand slaughter’s scepticism.

If Aufield thinks PPM = PP90 he wouldn't have made his post, would he? I'm not sure.

PP90 is very different though and is an accumulation of all points / 90, regardless of whether the player has been playing 90 minutes every game.

Is anyone nervous about the next period with Liverpool double/triple up... My own fixture returns spreadsheet (based on xg/relative performance this year, poisson etc) has the next period as pretty challenging attacking wise to the point that few of them actually offer the best value which is rare. I will almost certainly continue with taa+Salah, and they will score points, but I do wonder whether the premium prices will turn out to be the best way of investing funds?

Or do liverpool rise to the ocassion more than the norm/man city (whose goals over last two seasons have been pretty on trend in scoring the most vs worst defences etc) and there's nothing to worry about?

There aren't really any good defences in the Premier League from a Liverpool and Man City standpoint. If they play in 4th gear they still score 2 or 3 goals a game.

Man U, Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal - they're not tough fixtures from an attacking point of view because those teams will field attacking players and try to win the game. It can be the teams with the higher work rate that can be stubborn to break down.

There are known unknowns, and unknown unknowns - the principle extends to literally every player in the game - they all could go through a lean spell or get injured etc

Liverpool will be colossal favourites v Newcastle, but we’re a shock to occur, it wouldn’t be the first time a colossal favourite failed, and it won’t be the last.

But they are favourites for probably 35 or 36 of their 38 games this year for a reason

Liverpool lost 1 match last season, conceded the least and couple of goals less scored compared to City. We are seeing it head that way again.

I do not see why difficulty of fixtures should be looked at when having LFC assets.

      1. Markus

Because relatively scoring 1-2 each game rather than 3-4 means they won't be worth their expensive prices. In terms of the early fixtures, xG etc - liverpool have performed worse than last year given they've played easy attacking fixtures (would suggest 70-80 goals), man city have over performed, suggesting 100+ goals. This is 2nd best by a margin, but eg arsenal could match them in this next period and you could have their front 3 for 5m less (not suggesting that)... The argument isn't that they won't score goals but particularly Salah has to be averaging around 6.8 points per match over this period to prove value if you're not captaining... I'm not convinced he will necessarily do that.

Yeah and James scoring with every shot on target and he is going to keep it up?

          Lies, damned lies, and statistics.

I am very happy with my triple Pool of TAA VVD and Salah and absolutely nothing suggests that I should replace them with any other assets.

I don’t really see any difficulty in their fixtures - not for their assets to tick over

Utd and Chelsea defences are mid table

Spurs might be harder but pool are at home

Agree on chelsea, not on utd - they haven't conceded many and those that they have have been silly mistakes... Doesn't suggested being absolutely dominated by teams but aware playing against pool/Man City can be a lesson in defensive humiliation for anyone (including each other)

After a very average start (700k) I almost feel like I should be wildcarding but my team look too good on paper this week (2Fts aswell)

    Heaton (Button)

Digne Van Dijk Robertson (Montoya Rico)

    Salah KDB Sterling Trossard Mcginn

    Pukki Jota (Greenwood)

0.2m in the bank. Am I being silly or sensible not playing it?

    0.1m short of Jota - > Barnes

Shame on the Jota > Barnes move. City defender for Robbo and do the Barnes move?

I'm more concerned about what to do with the mighty Masuaku.
