What the expected goal data tells us about Fantasy assets

Fantasy managers who sign up as a Member to our website get access to a huge array of player and team statistics.

Among the underlying stats on offer is expected goal (xG) data, which many will be familiar with already.

For the uninitiated, xG is the measure of a quality of a chance based on criteria such as proximity of goal and angle of attempt.

For example, a shot from inside the six-yard box will carry a higher xG than a speculative effort from 35 yards.

Along the same lines, expected assist (xA) data calculates the quality of chance being created.

Expected goal data doesn’t predict when goals will be scored and isn’t a crystal ball for the future – rather, it is a measure of chances created in the past.

Nevertheless, many find xG data useful.

Fantasy managers can use the information to see which players are consistently being presented with – or providing – high-quality opportunities, which in turn can be helpful when making future team selections.

The rest of this article will be dedicated to looking at the xG data available in our Members’ Area, drawing attention to the players who have had significant expected goal involvement in 2019/20 so far and those who are under/overachieving based on their actual output.

Below are some of the most commonly used expected goal categories in our Members’ Area and the players featuring prominently in the respective tables.

While four matches is a small sample size, some familiar names are already leading the way.

All prices given in the tables and in the copy were correct at the time of writing (Friday).

Having said that, it could be a good thing for the premier league to subsidise in order to stimulate interest in the women's game in the same way that FPL stimulates interest in Burnley vs Watford.

Re a comment made on page 3 about a 4.5m nailed striker. Pretty sure all of us would be keen having one...

Greenwood anyone? Yes no signs yet of Ole wanting to turn to him but there is a very long season ahead for UTD as things stand with them swaying like a yo-yo.

I decided to keep Greenwood when I hit WC as you never know, Ole might just pull the trigger. Even if he is not first choice, he could very well make an entrance sooner or later. Having him as 3rd sub, price safe and frees up cash for rest of your squad.

    Me, I am keeping him.

Yeah I did have him but got rid on WC. If I change my structure back to 352 or something he'll be the first 4.5 striker I have. I won't be expecting him to start getting points any time soon though. He's basically just a non playing player that may get points at some point, most probably bench points until he puts together a string of starts.

He looked far more effective than Lingard when coming off the bench against Southampton and had a good shot saved by Gunn. With Martial's injury record I think Premier League starts will eventually come even if he has to make do with the Carabao Cup and Europa League initially. By far the best 4.5 FWD option.

What's your opinion on using the WC strictly in order to build team value and avoid being priced out? Crazy idea or legit strategy?

For example, I can easily see a 0.5 price swing just this week if I wait with my planned transfers. I don't have any burning issues to solve, but will probably not be able to make those transfers in 2-3 weeks time

    1. Ask Yourself

Silly if you're happy with your team. It's not fantasy stock market. Different options emerge over the course of the season and there will be bargains to be had which offset the players you are priced out of.

Not a bad idea as you'll probably need £101 to build the template by GW5. The price rises aren't as big as they used to be during IB that's the only down side.

I would never use it solely to try and built team value, but if you the chances are the players you want to bring in will be the ones that go up in value anyway, so it will be a byproduct of that.

    6. fitzy
      • 12 Years

The expected points over the entire season for an extra 0.1m is something silly like 2 points. So look at it like the wildcard would be a free 10 points right now.

Worth it for that alone? Maybe, maybe not. If you have a solid team now then there's surely going to be a better time when you want to make 10 changes after the template shifts.

Three weeks in a row with minus four and I'm set with my squad amd have a wc still. Too early to care about that 12 point gap that will be easily made up.

Thanks for all the replies! Now let me rephrase the question a bit to see if your opinions change... Kind of a physcological test 🙂

Would you hit the WC button just in order to bring the following players:
      Pope, TAA, Cantwell & Lundstram

IMO I wouldn’t use a WC just to build team value.

WC when your team needs multiple changes and then as your wildcards in place you can then use it to build value through the week.

Oh right, so do you mean if a player is red they can drop as many times as the number of people ditching dictates but then if they go from red straight to green (not yellow in-between) their price will be protected until the next GW?

If so, what's the thinking behind that then? In my mind it would make more sense for the opposite i.e. price to be protected for a GW if a players goes from green to red as injuries are luck based (to a certain extent, obviously there is a risk in picking an injury prone player) so FPL players shouldn't necessarily be penalised for that.

Kane, Robertson and Martial's price drops (or lack of them) this year have been very odd.

I always thought it's hard for super high owned players to drop which might explain Kane and Robertson but then I also thought the lack of Martial drops was because of injury and then KWP dropped. Basically I haven't got a scooby, maybe FPL Towers want it that way.

        1. fitzy
          • 12 Years

It's theoretically just as easy for any player to drop as it is % based. In reality what you see is players like De Gea become owned by "casuals" who forget about the game and never come back. So someone like say Trossard who is picked mostly by the type of people to frequent sites such as this will have a much more active ownership so easier to drop.

Yes, that makes sense. Never realised that, I thought there was some weight to the total ownership rather than just percentage based.

Drops are ownership based so highly owned players take a lot more tranfers out to drop.

        • 12 Years

I don't really get it either. Sometimes, despite price rises, you aren't really rewarded for owing a player. I would like to see loyalty points for owning players. 5 games 3 points, 10 games 5 points.

Protection is when a player returns from injury - i.e. when the flag is removed.
e.g. a player leaves the league they are red flagged and it never goes green again - they never get protected.

New players added to the game are also locked. Adrian as an example this season. People buying red flagged GKs and Defs should not be surprised by a drop. They can fall. Navaro a close example at the moment.

Martial's price not doing anything could be the reason why some are still holding onto him.

Price protection load of who ha, that and holding onto a player which is injured. He ain't getting you points by sitting on your bench at 7.7m.

      1. The Ejiptian King
        • 5 Years

Not that simple though, if he misses one game, I could've cost myself points for putting someone in for a hit rather than playing a sub.

True, but it could also swing the other way if you decided to ship him if you do not have KDB pending your squad situation and cash available too.

Having 7.7m rotting on your bench, and let's face it, his minutes on pitch over the last 2 seasons, just does not make sense living in hope over him.

He is nailed now tho, especially now that Lukaku and Sanchez are gone. His points per 90minutes too is actually quite good as well. 7.7m for a midfielder playing OOP for a top 6 team seems like very good value to me, but since Haller and Tammy scored last game everyone jumping on them, until someone else scores next gw.

So do you think Martial will feature GW5, start or come on as a sub?

That is the risk you take I guess. Just not keen on having a injured player at 7.7m not knowing whether he is going to start the next match or not. Thigh injury suggests he might not start straight away unless the fitness coaches deem him to be ready to go all out again.

I'm not sure how true this still is as it's a few years since I did any detailed analysis on price changes (since Frank had a kid and TotalFPL died) but hope this helps.

    Price Rise (above original price)
    - This is based on a set number of transfer in - e.g. 25k as an example.
    - How much a player is owned is irrelevant it's the same threshold for all.
    - The threshold for the number needed reduces each week to allow for less people playing as the season goes on - e.g. 25k may becom2 24.5k then 24k etc week by week.

    Price Drop
    - This is based on ownership and used to be about 10%.
i.e. a player owned by 20k people needs 2000 out to drop. A player owned by a million people needs 100k out to drop.
    - Flags used to increase the number required to drop where a red flag meant the 10% became closer to 20%.

    Price Rise below original value
    - This is where it gets a bit tricky but it was always that if a player was below their starting price the threshold to rise was either the standard amount (in our example 25k) or the number who had sold to cause the drop - whichever was fewest.
i.e. In the example of the player who dropped from 2000 sales they only need 2000 in to go back up. The player that had needed 100k to drop would still need the standard 25k to rise.

    Protection
    - Price is frozen when a red flag is removed.
    - It can be a bit random at times when this happens or not but typically a player would have to miss at least 1 game.

    Notes:
    - The above is Net Transfers in/out. i.e. a player is bought by 1000 people and sold by 5000 people they have a net transfers out of 4000.
    - Wildcard transfers don't count but predictor sites have no way of knowing who's on wc thus on high wildcard weeks like this one the numbers are inflated and players look like they will rise drop but actually don't.

Surely it makes sense to be brave and bench one of Zinch or Pukki for Montoya at home to Burnley rather than hedging my bets? Obviously I'll either do the wrong one or both Zinch and Pukki will score.

Im playing Montoya, but im also playing Pukki and Zinch. Tbh I think Pukki is the least likely to get something this GW, but you never know.

I thought about benching for Emerson or Luiz but just one goal from Pukki will hurt rank so will probably play safe.

I agree, it's essentially 3 x mid price forwards in a 343 or 2 in a 442. I'm not fussed about any 5.5 - 7.5 midfielders but both Pepe and Son look good moving forward

That's fair, easily done by downgrading one of the mids though in that case plus I think a 9.5 mid typically offers better value anyway

As things quieten down over the first international break of the year, it's a good time to scrutinise what has happened so far. We often like to talk about the things we’ve got right, but what about those that really haven’t conformed to expectations?

Who in your team has left you disappointed after promising so much more?

Who, despite your expectations saying otherwise, has come out of the blue to look a great FPL option?

For me, I’m finding it a lot easier to pick the disappointments than the surprises, which sums up how I’m feeling about my team!

Trossard should get a mention. Unlucky not to return more, missed the first game and has now picked up an injury just as he has two nice fixtures – big disappointment. Has looked really good both in games this season and in preseason so I’m sure we’ll see him become popular again at some point this season.

Another one I’d put forward, despite not owning him, is Sigurdsson. Just 1 assist so far despite 4 fixtures you’d think he could (maybe should) return in as an 8m midfielder. Dropped completely out of most people’s thinking now despite being really, really popular for quite a while in preseason.

Perez is the biggest disappointment. Got rid before his price started dropping. His price going for a ball of chalk is good though should he by any chance get into the action.

Siggy will probably register a decent score this season, and they'll price him up similarly next summer. Unfortunately, his points only ever arrive when you least expect it. Only die hard faithfuls see any benefit. It's like sitting with £8m on your bench for weeks on end, then one hurrah just as you moving him on. I did captain him once last year, and profited, then shipped him out. Never again.

He was popular but was it justified...

I always got some “interesting” reactions any time I quoted some Siggy stats during pre season 😉

        - 23 blanks in 38 appearances
        - missed 4 of last 7 pens
        - outscored by both his fullbacks in 2019 (not on value, on actual FPL points!)
        - 0G 0A in last years equivalent of his opening 5 fixtures excluding villa

My conclusion was that - just like a puppy is for life, not just for Christmas - a Siggy is for the season, not just for 5 GW’s! Lol

He’s the type to blank in lovely fixtures, get sold, then brace unexpectedly in two difficult fixtures, be bought back in, just in time to blank for another 5-6 games, repeat ad infinium

Love your analogy about a puppy is for life. Enjoyed that.
Saying he blanks in nice fixtures cannot be justified. He is a great FF assist albeit I do not own him.

            • 14 Years

Na I don’t consider him a “great” FPL asset at all anymore unfortunately - he was for sure once upon a time when he was at 6.0’s & 6.5’s etc... so many fond FPL memories of him smashing it at reading & particularly Swansea

But when he got bumped to 7.5 it was the beginning of the end of his viability (for me)

8.0 is way too rich for my blood for what Siggy offers - 38 games of appearance points will do anyone’s season score the world of good 😉

That being said, if he had scored the penalties he’d missed last year, it’d put a different spin on things. But 4 pens misse din las t7 suggests the guy has developed a genuine case of the yips when stepping up to the spot

He's played! As far as I'm concerned, that's a big green check next to his name for a 4.5m mid! Hopefully he can shake off that knock or whatever the issue is.

          Disappointments:
Almiron punt - played at striker and had lots of chances but still can’t use his legs properly in England

          Perez - obviously

JOC - Lundstram absolutely destroyer him when I thought I was onto something

Coleman - Plays as a striker at times but is just useless, should have done better than Digne

          Surprises:
Martial - Consistently returned when he played despite not having many chances to

VVD - managed to keep up with TAA and outscore Robbo

Brave to go with Almiron considering the state Newcastle looked to be in! Has never quite got the returns his performances have looked like they deserve when in form.

Martial starting up front looked a well needed FPL gem until he went and got himself injured - slightly limited my happiness with him 🙁

On WC currently. He is firmly in there. Feel like no matter what Burnley striker I pick it’ll be the wrong one, happy to stick with norwich attack. Fixtures good enough to set and forget for a while after this week. The team is set up to give pukki chances, they all understand each other very well and it’s hard to stop. Barnes I find also is great value and may end up in my WC but would be alongside and not instead of Pukki

          - Double Liverpool defence
          - AWB (only one CS not good enough)
          - My captaincy selections (other than Salah GW1)

          Done well:

          - Lamela (and I think will continue to do well given current form)

Yeah Lamela has been quietly ticking over there - hinges on if he keeps getting minutes though. The whole captaincy thing seems to be a common theme this year - perhaps it's just down to Sterling and Salah hauling unpredictably, or did you go more maverick with your choices?

Harry Kane has definitely underperformed, not necessarily in FPL points but his overall performance has been awful because of how poor Spurs have played.

Perez has also blanked a lot and generally less threatening.

TAA has disappointed me after captaining him the first two gameweeks (only 6 points from those two games).

Barkley, Pulisic, Robertson and Sigurdsson have also disappointed.

My biggest mistake has been starting the season with Bilva.

When the game came out, I didn't even consider him, under the knowledge that he's fantastic in real life but not so good an fpl option.

But somehow I caved in to the idea that having cheap City attacking coverage was worth it...

So far it hasn't been, and I've still not found a way to get him out, with other fires requiring more work

          Jota has been disappointing.

Last season, he was outscoring Jimenez once he moved up front. But I must have underestimated the Europa effect because Wolves in general have been lacklustre going forwards. Lesson learnt.

Still expect him to come good, but waiting for that just doesn't seem possible. Haven't seen many Wolves games - is he still doing all the right things or just completely off the pace?

Doesn't seem to be in the box as much this season. He's been dropping deep whilst Jimenez has stayed forward. It's like they've switched roles. I don't know whether it's because of the opponents they were playing or something else. Saiss has a higher xG than Jota...

Last sentence says it all really, pretty concerning for owners.

Could still be a big option in GW12 - 16.

Saiss had a random open chance which was worth 0.88 xG, I believe. Don't think we should expect that to continue

Perez is a good one. He was hounding the penalty box all the way through pre-season. No matter where he'd play, he'd always get into the box as soon as the ball entered the final third.

Since the season has started however, he seems to be much wider and deeper. Had high hopes for him...

Fraser, Jota, Sig, Robertson have all disappointed.

          A special shout out to
Kane - the thing that annoyed me most was the last 5 mins against Villa, and the stats he produced in that game. Sufficient to lure many (myself included) to restructure their teams and hand him the armband against Toon. In the last 2 seasons, he has turned into an absolute troll.

Perez, Bilva and Barkley the disappointments for me for sure. Stones also - injury at a bad time was unfortunate

Robbo, Fraser, Perez, King, AWB. Started with all five and apart from AWB's great GW1 they've all been disappointing to varying degrees!
(special mention to Kane captaincy punt fail in GW3 also)

Pukki being the standout surprise for me after watching him v Liverpool, brought him in and captained him for his hattie in GW2 🙂

Which is better still can’t tell. I think if Laca is out for a couple games it makes Auba essential but if not I feel pretty indifferent to these options I need your help.

          A) Auba + Ceballos + Cantwell (3/3 playing subs
          B) Pepe + David Silva + Greenwood (2/3 playing subs)

I had Pukki yeah but not captain. Most noticeable picks that week were:

                Pukki - 17
                Trossard - 7
                Digne - 11

Saw that his "representative" told The Athletic he was out until after Newcastle, so guessing it's pretty reliable.

His representative is unlikely a trained doctor, but given he was close to finally getting into that Belgium team I'd doubt he'd pull out unless it was something genuine.

Also, I'm too cheap to buy Athletic membership, so I don't know what the full article said!
