Meet the Manager #17 – Always Cheating’s Josh Landon

Last season’s finish of 1,224 was Josh Landon’s third within the top 5,000 during his nine-year Fantasy Premier League career.

But the Always Cheating podcast co-host’s campaigns haven’t always looked so easy.

In Joe’s latest Meet the Manager interview he finds out Josh’s strategies for success and how he has learned from his mistakes.

The demons of what he calls “that Yaya Toure and Aaron Ramsey season” loom large in his thinking years on. This has helped him snap up emerging bandwagons quickly, and especially before they become the template.

Other ghosts from the past such as Watford striker Odion Ighalo are also revealed during Josh and Joe’s chat about how psychology affects Fantasy managers’ decisions.

As listeners to Josh’s podcast will know, the eye test is crucial to his decision making. After all, the best manager to trust is often ourselves, as Josh describes how he navigates his way through the noise of FPL content, most notably on social media.

Latest football trends, which defenders to select and the ability to spot when a Fantasy game is “throwing a bone” are also explored in detail during this latest episode of a series that began last season to focus on the thoughts of managers with a stellar track record of success.

The chat with Josh is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

It is also available on Soundcloud and through other notable podcast outlets. Embedded versions of these are also available below.

FPL returns after an International Break with numerous FPL assets racking up 180 minutes and hundreds of air miles - but for many the air travel doesn’t stop there. After this gameweek we welcome back the opening games of the European tournaments, with 7 Premier League teams having commitments on the continent.

However, the question for FPL managers is what impact will this have?

Klopp has already warned that his current low-rotation line-ups will “change completely” after the international break with him warning that he will need his entire squad in this period. They themselves have a tough game in Italy vs Napoli to navigate, one which you’d expect a full strength Liverpool team to play – will this have knock on impacts on his PL line-up vs Newcastle?

Manchester City have a 1700 mile flight to Ukraine to look forward to, with many speculating that Pep will be looking to get off to a strong start. Will the likes of De Bryune have their minutes managed after an impressive international break with UCL in mind? Chelsea conversely have a home tie to open their UCL group stage, but it’s far from an easy one with Valencia visiting – with an already competitive squad it wouldn’t be surprising to see rotation there.

    Full midweek fixtures:

    Tuesday
    Chelsea (Home) vs Valencia
    Liverpool (Away) vs Napoli

    Wednesday
    Tottenham (Away) vs Olympiakos
Manchester City (Away) vs Shakhtar Donetsk

    Thursday
    Arsenal (Away) vs Eintracht Frankfurt
    Manchester United (Home) vs Astana
    Wolves (Home) vs Braga

How much rotation, if any, do you think we’ll see?
Which FPL players (or teams) would you pick out as being at high risk for losing minutes this week?
Do we need to improve the strength of our benches?

      Good post
I think all Man City attackers are rotation risk tbh. Have this back of the mind while ©'ing Ras this gw but the upside is awesome so I'm going to © Raz.
Re Pool, Midfield rotation is possible, 3 Strikers are almost assured to start as Klopp/Pool want to Win PL & it's not a secret he will not be taking any fixtures lightly.
So pool players are less risky.

Re Spurs, i don't care as they are not in my plans atm & Chelsea i think we will see huge rotation in both PL & CL. Hopefully Mount start this gw.
Have Dunk Cantwell on the bench so kind of relaxed 🙂

        Agreed

Think I’ll go KdB c this week. Chelsea are the fascinating one to me. My guess is that there’ll be heaps of rotation there - just hard to tell who gets what. Was the Super Cup line up a clue? Neither Tammy or Mount started.

I’m a KDB owner since Gw1, but I d note that he has contributed 4 weeks out of 4. I captained him GW 4 and i ll be skipping giving him the armband this week. Despite his brilliance he is due a quiet week.

City is a minefield. In my head I see City playing Jesus and Mahrez vs Shakhtar and letting them run wild for a while, but hopefully Sterling will get a rest then and not vs a very depleted Norwich.

Think Mount could play both games fairly comfortably, but he's going to miss a game at some point eventually - next week would be my current guess. Think Tammy could be a decent shout though - can see Giroud being given European games again, but it largely depends on strategy.

My bench is pretty poor, so considerably less relaxed 😉

Does C HO change the equation in your view? I’m finding it hard to think he won’t be a regular in the PL side. I just don’t see where he fits right now.

4 wingers, 2 spots. Would expect CHO and Pulisic to be first choice, but I can see CHO and Willian being rotated given Willian's history with the club. Lampard seems to like Pedro too, so reasonable to think him and Pulisic might rotate.

Basically - wouldn't want to guess until I see some games! Might take a little for CHO to get up to game speed anyways.

Will just add - rumblings of discontent between Willian and Chelsea. Possible that it will (and already is) limit his minutes. Just rumours right now though.

But why (c) Sterling and risk the cameo when Salah has NEW. If Salah had a worse fixture than maybe, but it seems silly to me to risk it. Sterling will likely get pulled early too.

May as well take Klopp at his word, and we already know Pep's approach, Wolves risk and Emery randomness. Liverpool vs Napoli as a fixture seems most concerning. Esp Firmino playing for Brazil tomorrow. We don't yet know if TAA will play tonight but could make an argument either way on him.

Yeah agree with that - think Firmino could be at risk. Still think TAA will play given how deep Newcastle will sit, feels smarter to play Gomez vs Napoli if he's going to play one of the two at full back.

Best laid plans and all that though.

Yeah I'd say Firmino 50:50 for weekend. This would be the game to rest him for. Wasn't it origi that broke the deadlock against Newcastle last year too? They've only really got 1 main backup defender though, so would seem to make most sense to play gomez in midweek.

I think he scored the winner in a 3-2 if I remember correctly. If Newcastle are going to sit deep, having a decent finisher like Origi on standby wouldn't hurt at all.

I think we could see one or two surprise benchings at City and Liverpool this weekend.

Last season it was Firmino and Sterling right after the international break. Mane and De Bruyne too but that was more about fitness than rotation.

I'm not sure if we can take anything from this, but just for reference, these were City and Liverpool's PL starting 11's after the first international break of last season, just before the Champions League kicked off.

City - Ederson, Stones, Kompany, Laporte, Mendy, Fernandinho, Bernardo (De Bruyne 58), Silva (Foden 75), Mahrez, Sane, Aguero (Jesus 66)

Liverpool - Alisson, Gomez, Lovren, van Dijk, Robertson, Henderson (Wijnaldum 45), Shaqiri, Milner (Firmino 77), Salah, Lallana (Fabinho 69), Sturridge

Attacking players often get some minutes even when benched so I think the value of a bench is overestimated when rotation strikes, most players have at least one playing benched defender in case tostados strikes there

Good point. Big difference between zero minutes/actually benching a rotation risk in FPL vs. getting limited mins

Can see Liverpool and City trying to effectively get this weekend's games won early on with strong initial line-ups. Gundogan illness makes me more confident of KDB starting along with Rodri and Dilva.

Interesting that Shaqiri pulled out of int'l duty to "focus on getting fitness for Liverpool" (or similar) so imagine he plays some kind of part this week - whether off bench this weekend / starting Napoli... but would still bet on the front three to start vs NEW/che.

Spurs need to get results in the league, can only see them going full strength - however that looks. Might feel he can get result in Greece with fringe-y players like Moura.
              Chelsea similar.

United surely prioritise Leicester - that's such a big game for them now.

TL:DR - I don't think any big assets will miss out starting this week but reckon for LIV/MCI there's certainly a growing possibility of minute management & hence might see them get 'out the traps early.'

LFC midfield is far more at rotation risk than attack and defence. Gomez needs to stay fit as if anything happens to VVD or Matip then Lovren has to come in. Lovren is out of the picture. Gomez is not effective enough at RB as Klopp needs his fullbacks to bomb forward. Maybe Gomez will play RB in the CL.

Only rotation risk defensive wise I can see in EPL is Milner for TAA but then again, Milner better in midfield for his workrate.

Agree re LFC midfield. Gini just played 90 mins x2
Not sure if Keita fit yet but think that’s where the rotation as usual could come from. Depends what happens tonight for England but Ox could start at the weekend
Expect Origi to be involved at some point

See where you’re coming from but I’m expecting both KdB and Sterling to miss one each of the next two. Pep is fairly consistent in resting his key mids in non top 6 match ups. They never miss the big ones.

It’s not as if there isn’t firepower there with Mahrez, Bilva and Foden.

Agreed as to Liverpool. A couple of seasons ago Klopp got burned starting weak(er) sides ahead of CL matches. Since then he has generally fielded strong sides in the run up PL matches, even against weak opponents. OTOH, Pep's bench is so deep that there's no such thing as a weak team. I fear Sterling being benched, although I think Sane being injured reduces those odds. And I also think Gundo's injury will keep KDB from rotation this week. Zinchenko is definitely a concern, though.

There will surely be a fair amount of rotation but tricky thing is working out who will play Europe and who will get the league.

              Its a proper minefield!

The ones you'd hope for would be that gomez plays rb vs napoli, some of more experienced Chelsea (giroud/willian) play vs valencia, but its kind of guess work.

Man city - not a clue.

Spurs will play strong side and rotate a little less to start with in key positions I think.

Man utd will play b team in Europe, plenty of choice aside from cf. Might start rashford/martial and bring on Mason but would expect it not to affect their league minutes

absolutely no idea - bit annoying that City/Liverpool face their main rivals first, but I'm fairly sure City could wheel out a genuine B team in most of their CL group games and still get 12 points

Norwich feels like one that any man city team could score plenty against. Foden rodri Dilva bilva jesus mahrez could easily score plenty. Sterling is at risk imo, no need to start him for this one

Pep did this last season if you look at the matches Sterling missed. They were “soft” games before key big fixtures.

He has way more firepower at his disposal at the pointy end of the pitch. Mahrez Dilva Bilva Jesus and Foden are all at least one level up on the marginal players at Liverpool. They may all be to sone extent second choices but scarcely part of a weak attack

My worry of not owning City/Pool assets outweighs my fear of them being rotated.

Can't do a lot about cameos but I'm on WC, will get my bench sorted and pick the best FPL players I think for points. If they are no shows I can't really do that much about it other than making sure I have as nailed a squad away from CL/Europa players. This is where players like Vardy and Digne just as examples become strong options.

Is Rico to Lundstram worth bothering with for a FT?
Would play Lund this week over Cantwell, and then he'd give me a second playing sub alongside Doncker for the forseeable.

Would quite like to roll the FT and use it to shift some funds around next week, but have just spotted this option and it looks like a solid squad building move in anticipation of CL rotation. Any thoughts appreciated.

Would I be crazy to get rid opt out of getting KDB for Silva?

My team value is rubbish so having KDB means no Haller or no Zinc/Otamendi

            Man I hate wildcards! lol

I can't lose Sterling maybe downgrading Salah to Mane but not sure how comfortable I am with that... Salah is my security blanket in terms of captaincy

                A: Lundstram (Southampton Home)
                or

It doesn’t show up on the ticker as Chelsea at home is bizarrely counted as a red fixture for attack but aren’t Wolves entering a bit of a fixture swing. I certainly wouldn’t mind Jim or even Jota perhaps for most of these:

                Chelsea h
                Palace a
                Watford h
                City a
                Soton h
                Newcastle a

The home fixtures look juicy in any event.

                      True

Jim though is ticking along much as he did last season - unnoticed on here almost completely. Not the same value of course as 5.6 but still

                    Haller or Abraham?

Already have Mount. Have the money for Abraham but would be a -4 for Haller.

I’m tempted on a -4 due to security of starts and no European action.

                    What’s your thoughts?

It is if Tammy gets rotated but obviously only time will tell whether that happens.

Tammy on fore at the moment. He's their main man atm. No chance of him being rotated anytime soon. Giroud just played in and international so he'll be on the bench again.

Some may have noticed that Watford changed its manager from Javi to Quique.

Last time Quique was around, he had Ighalo & Deeney that raked up goals and decent but porous defence.

If he can give us a Pereyra or Deulofeu as fantasy options again, that'd be nice.

                    Ryan
                    TAA / Lund / Digne
                    Mane / KDB / Sterling / Mount
                    Barnes / Pukki / Abraham
                    Button / AWB / Cantwell / Mohamady

Am I G2G? Bring Ota in for AWB next week and put Lund back on the bench?

Will be benching him after the Southampton game. Tough fixtures after that and he’s not looking like attacking reruns in every game

                    King > Barnes?

Seems like a sideways move as both have good fixtures but it’s very tempting

Barnes will regress no doubt, but how much is the question. Will Wood start scoring also, at 0.4 less?

Good question. Woods will start scoring at some point and it's making multiple decisions like this (deciding when) over 38 weeks that contributes to a good, bad or indifferent FPL season.

                      I’d add in Callum

Those fixtures couldn’t be juicier really - 5 wide open defences after Everton in 5. These fixtures look better than the SU Villa opening pair imo.

Liverpool want to stay ahead, City want to get ahead. Not sure we will see many changes for Liverpool as Newcastle will be parking the bus. Pep roulette may rear it's ugly head though being Norwich are terrible defensively.

Think Sterling more at risk than KDB. Aguero most likely to start as no Internationals.

Lineup ok for this week? Anyone have any idea if Martial might be fit?

                    Pope
                    AWB - VVD - Digne - Zinchenko - Lundstram
                    Sterling (c) - KDB - Salah - Martial
                    Jota

                    Bench: Button, Pukki, Dendocker, Greenwood

Though I suspect Pep will make that decision irrelevant
