McGinn nets for Scotland as Gundogan pulls out of Germany squad

Having looked at the bulk of Friday’s matches in our first Scout Notes of the day, we now turn our attention to three more international fixtures that were contested at the back-end of last week.

Notes from Saturday’s games will follow this evening.

Subscribers can view data on some of the matches listed below in our Members’ Area, with details available here.

Germany 2-4 The Netherlands

  • Ilkay Gundogan (£5.3m) – 29 minutes
  • Bernd Leno (£5.0m) – 0 minutes
  • Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) – 90 minutes
  • Georginio Wijnaldum (£5.5m) – 90 minutes
  • Davy Propper (£5.0m) – 32 minutes
  • Nathan Ake (£4.9m) – 9 minutes
  • Patrick van Aanholt (£5.6m) – 0 minutes

Having emerged as a 61st-minute substitute in Germany’s 4-2 home defeat to the Netherlands on Friday, Ilkay Gundogan (£5.3m) has now returned to Manchester.

Die Mannschaft reported on Sunday that Gundogan had been suffering from an illness after arriving in Belfast ahead of Monday’s meeting with Northern Ireland and has now been allowed to return to his club.

Gundogan will have a full week to recover before City take on Norwich next Saturday evening and his lack of minutes over the international break may come into Pep Guardiola’s reckoning in Gameweek 5, particularly with the league champions away at Shakhtar Donetsk the following Tuesday.

Liverpool pair Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) and Georginio Wijnaldum (£5.5m) haven’t had the luxury of a rest, however, with both lasting the full 90 minutes in Hamburg and now set to be involved in the Euro 2020 qualifier in Estonia on Monday evening.

Van Dijk underscored his aerial threat with two headed chances, one of which was saved by Manuel Neuer and immediately preceded Jonathan Tah’s own goal to put the Dutch 2-1 in front.

Van Dijk prevented a certain goal from Timo Werner but the Netherlands certainly weren’t watertight at the back, with Germany racking up five big chances.

Wijnaldum, who tends to be afforded more attacking freedom when playing for his country, had an excellent opportunity saved but turned provider for the visitors’ third goal when teeing up Donyell Malen.

Davy Propper (£5.0m) and Nathan Ake (£4.9m) both made second-half appearances as substitutes but Patrick van Aanholt (£5.6m) and Bernd Leno (£5.0m) failed to make it off the bench.

Scotland 1-2 Russia

  • Andrew Robertson (£6.9m) – 90 minutes
  • Ryan Fraser (£7.3m) – 90 minutes
  • Oli McBurnie (£5.9m) – 90 minutes
  • Scott McTominay (£5.0m) – 78 minutes
  • John McGinn (£5.6m) – 62 minutes
  • Kenny McLean (£4.9m) – 28 minutes
  • Robert Snodgrass (£5.4m) – 0 minutes
  • Stuart Armstrong (£5.4m) – 0 minutes

Scotland’s chances of qualifying for next summer’s European Championship via the conventional route now look slim.

Steve Clarke’s side slumped to a 2-1 home defeat to Russia on Friday evening, with six Premier League players handed minutes.

Three of that half-dozen-strong group played a part in Scotland’s early goal: Ryan Fraser‘s (£7.3m) cross being spilled by Russian goalkeeper Guilherme after the distraction of a near-post dart from Oli McBurnie (£5.9m), with John McGinn (£5.6m) firing in from six yards.

Fraser and Andrew Robertson (£6.9m) had started fairly brightly down the Scotland left but played less of a part as the game wore on and indeed both players were involved in Russia’s two goals: it was Robertson who inadvertently bundled the ball into Artem Dzyuba’s path just before half-time, while Fraser was dispossessed in the move that led to Stephen O’Donnell’s own-goal.

Robertson came in for some criticism for his performance and the Scotland captain said after full-time:

Being criticised, rightly or wrongly, it’s maybe stronger now that I’m captain. But these are things I’m made for. If people criticise me, it’s fine. I’d prefer they didn’t because it means I’ve put in a good performance – but sometimes that doesn’t always go your way.

Some games as captain I’ve not been good enough, some I have been, but that’s me to look at my own performance. That’s what I’ve looked at over the last few games.

I don’t like getting beaten anyway, but on Friday I maybe dwelled on it longer than usual. I’ve learned a lot. Good things and bad things.

Fraser, Robertson and lone striker McBurnie lasted the whole 90 minutes, while McGinn, who also faded after a bright start, was replaced by Kenny McLean (£4.9m) just after the hour-mark.

Scott McTominay (£5.0m) started the game in central midfield but Robert Snodgrass (£5.4m) and Stuart Armstrong (£5.4m) didn’t make it off the bench.

Scotland face Belgium this evening at Hampden Park in another Euro 2020 qualifier.

Wales 2-1 Azerbaijan

  • Wayne Hennessey (£4.4m) – 90 minutes
  • Chris Mepham (£4.5m) – 90 minutes
  • Daniel James (£6.1m) – 90 minutes
  • Neil Taylor (£4.5m) – 80 minutes
  • Harry Wilson (£6.0m) – 63 minutes
  • Ben Davies (£5.5m) – 10 minutes
  • Danny Ward (£4.5m) – 0 minutes

Daniel James (£6.1m) was handed a full 90-minute run-out as Wales secured a narrow win over Euro 2020 qualifying Group E whipping boys Azerbaijan.

James looked sporadically lively down the left flank and flashed a 65th-minute shot wide, having also provided a couple of teasing crosses across the visitors’ box.

Wales’ performances were below-par all-round, however, and Ryan Giggs’ unconvincing side had to rely on a late Gareth Bale header to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for Euro 2020.

Harry Wilson (£6.0m) failed to make much of an impression as his set-piece deliveries fell flat, while Neil Taylor (£4.5m) – selected at left-back ahead of Ben Davies (£5.5m) – and Wayne Hennessey (£4.4m) were both culpable for Azerbaijan’s equaliser: a slip from the Villa left-back letting in goalscorer Mahir Emreli, who finished at the second attempt after a fumble from Hennessey.

Bournemouth stopper Chris Mepham (£4.5m) played the whole game at centre-half.

Wales face Belarus on Monday evening, so owners of James et al will be hoping their Fantasy assets are handed breathers for this international friendly.

Giggs said of his team selection ahead of tonight:

Everyone’s come through the other night. Some players needed games and minutes and the guys who weren’t involved have trained well. So everyone’s ready to go.

It’s constantly a juggling act. Tom Lawrence has got a game Friday, Ethan Ampadu’s not played a lot of games. Also, bring a little bit of freshness and how best we can hurt the opposition. All these things apply when you pick teams.

Good afternoon all. Wildcard team below, any comments or criticism would be greatly appreciated. I know most will say I need Aguero or Sterling, but Aguero unbalances the front line and I’d have to go for Greenwood. KDB is my City midfield cover and I think Son is going to start firing soon, Spuds need someone to kickstart their season and I think he’s the man.

    Pope

    TAA – Pieters – Digne

    Salah – Son – KDB – Mount

    Pukki – Vardy – Barnes

Bench: Button – Guendouzi – Mings – Lundstram (I know I could free up money by going for the cheapest of the cheap on the bench, but I want starts on there)

I'm steering clear of Wolves as Europa seems to be distracting them - so no to Dendoncker. Then it's Newcastle (Hayden) or Brighton (Stephens) who both look like they're going to struggle. Guendouzi is at a 'top 6' side, so that's my reasoning lol

makes sense, I stared with Dendoncker Hayden & Guendouzi but on WC now.

I think my bench is Söyüncü Pierters and Guendouzi now

That may be the case now but last season he had zero offensive upside. Unless the assist against Spurs is a sign of things to come, I would prefer Cantwell tbh based on what I have seen so far. If it's just appearance points the OP is looking for, then fair enough.

year older now, playing more minutes this season, attacking team & may chip in ... will rise in price before the deadline

but it is bench fodder and Cantwell is 4.8 now so I wouldn’t be going for him.

Cheers for the comment. As I'm WCing I wanted to give myself the best chance of fielding an XI every week- in the event someone gets crocked. The starting XI should be nailed on every week, barring injury or suspension, though

Sí. Well it seems a bit sideways for a hit - Walker is a rotation risk, King has good fixtures and is imo a better option than McGinn, and Martial is a great option if fit.

A bit of a random question, but how do you decide when you're going to use your wildcard?

Are you a manager that has a fixture in mind before the season starts based on fixture swings, or do you like to take is as it comes and use it when your squad is hit by injuries etc.?

    Interested to hear your thoughts.

first one is when i need to, which was this week. Injuries, players dropping in price, international break, players rising in price, a few mid priced players hitting form ...

Second one is linked to the double game week strategy

I'd say it's normally a good choice to play it when you've considered several factors like in your case. In my experience, it's often the times where you wildcard specifically to bring in one player, or players from one team, where things are more likely to backfire. Good luck with your wildcard 🙂

I pick my GW1 squad with the first 8 gameweeks in mind. I will only use the WC early if I somehow pick a whole host of duds. I've had my fair share of picks that haven't met expectations this season (Jota, Fraser, Robertson, Laporte) but prefer to sort them out with a few hits early doors, rather than using the WC.

But I'm ranked 2.6m so wtf do I know 😀

I like this strategy. I personally like to plan for a set number of gameweeks as well and 8 gameweeks seems like a good amount, since wildcarding from then onwards would give you a good sample size of games.

Previously, ive always picked my date -- some international break likely. But that can be awkward because maybe you like your team at the moment -- why use a wildcard?? I now think you should use your wildcard when you have a group of players that you really want. When you look at your team and are confident on 5ish moves. Then it's time, no use waiting.

I agree, when you feel your team is in need of an overhaul there's not much use in putting it off. This time around I have a GW in mind (GW14), but if my team is starting to fall apart before then I definitely won't hesitate to pull the trigger beforehand.

    RMWCT if you could...

    Pope Button
    TAA Digne Holding Lundstram Hanley
    Salah KDB Sterling HWilson Cantwell
    Pukki Haller Wood

    0.1 itb

Holding - due back imminently. arsenal have great fixtures and they have a great record with him in the team. fans rate him very highly

HWilson - it's him, James or Iwobi. Aware people may laugh at the last one but I reckon he'll be good for Everton now they've started scoring. best option there?

Wood - can't see him continuing to not score for long. great fixtures too.

As you’re going with a weak bench and it’s nearly CL time, I’d probably go Haller over Abraham. Abra seems first choice... but will surely get rested from time to time

Looking for suggestions for an American coming to London to watch an EPL game.

Hi all - I would really appreciate your advice on a London-EPL-specific question. My wife and two adult siblings will be in London for about 36 hours the weekend of October 19-20. I would love to see a English Premier League game in person while we're there. From what I can tell, there are three options on that Saturday (October 19):
      A) Newcastle/Chelsea at Stamford Bridge
      B) Watford/Spurs at London Stadium
      C) ManCity/Palace at Selhurst Park

If you could only attend one game, assuming no team allegiance, which would you attend?

Also, what's the best way for an American to get tickets to a game? Anything else I should be aware of?

      Many thanks in advance!

Thanks, very true. I'm worried it might be harder to get tickets for that game though, since it's City. Do you think that's the case?

It’s a smaller ground that’s for sure. That would be first in my priority list though. I haven’t been but spurs’ new stadium looks amazing so that would be worth checking out if you can’t manage the city one. Always lots of tickets available there as it seats nearly 100,000

On the ticket point: can you just buy tickets at the grounds on the day of the match? Or will I have to buy them in advance through the club website? (Sorry for the beginner's questions, this will be my first EPL match.)

Ah I see this is where you’ll streusel. Not sure if they’ll have been released yet but to buy tickets usually you need to be a member of the club. Once the tickets have been sold to members then they extend the sale I believe at most grounds, someone more helpful will reply I hope

Websites like Stubhub or Viagogo but seems there may be new rules saying that they can only sell hospitality tickets.

            Chelsea Newcastle game from £159

            https://www.viagogo.co.uk/Sports-Tickets/Football/Barclays-Premier-League/Chelsea-FC-Tickets/E-3845220

Chelsea home league games usually sell out to members only so may prove tricky to get tickets to.

Hospitality usually involves free drinks and some food. From the official website:

West Stand upper tier near the goal line
                Savoury refreshments on arrival
                Interactive Chef’s table
                Unreserved seating in Museum
                Pre-match behind-the-scenes tour
                Complimentary bar
                Half-time drinks voucher
                Exclusive Chelsea gift
                Matchday programme
                Ex-player appearance

Online for most clubs. You should buy online in advance. There’s website that sell on season tickets not used at a high price but it’s hugely club dependent. In recall for Hull you could buy on the day. Best to go on the clubs websites and look at else of buying tickets for games coming very soon (released tickets) and just do some old fashioned googling

I haven't done this since 2012 but back then I became a Chelsea international member when visiting London for a few days (I'm Australian). Didn't cost much, maybe £20. Once I became an international member I could buy tickets at face-value. The games I went and saw were Chelsea v Fulham in the EPL, and Chelsea v Nordjalend in the UCL. This was much more cost effective than buying tickets online as I had done a couple years earlier.

Jump on the websites of Chelsea, Spurs, Palace and see what international membership options they have available, and if these give you priority tickets.

Chelsea Membership will cost you £28. After that they have the following info on their website for the Newcastle game:

Ticket sales for this match will be as follows:

Wednesday 11 September: Tickets will be sold to members at one ticket per person.

Monday 16 September: Season ticket holders and members can purchase an extra two tickets (maximum of three in total).

Monday 23 September: Tickets will go on general sale (maximum of four tickets per person).

Tickets will be sold online from 7am and from 9.15am at the ticket office for personal callers and telephone sales.

Is the 'more common' front three of mid priced fwd (Haller, Barnes, Pukki, etc...) still the way to go (given their good fixtures) or does the likes of Vardy, Kane, Auba finding decent form shake up the template or are we happy to ignore given their price?

              Questions:

              1) Player - KDB - How many hits can I justify to bring him in? (Would need a -8 to do it because I'm keeping my wildcard on ice for later.)

              2) Team - Man United. Stay away for now or worth keeping some of the mid-priced assets if you have them? (Martial is still in my team and I'm waiting on his injury news... James is an interesting shout.)

              3) Talking Point - Rest, rotation, and injury fears... do the FFS mods and cons think about their teams and decisions any differently now that Europa and Champions League will get underway next week (right after GW5)?

              4) Bonus - How big a couch is needed to hide behind if you don't own Aguero when Man City play Norwich? (I have Sterling and Salah and can't get Sergio in without wildcarding... I'm thinking the couch would need to be at least 3 meters wide by 1.5 meters high... and the TV on mute.)

              Thanks Joe!

Three teams I've personally identified as key to target for their run of games. Burnley, Arsenal and Spurs. We all know the usual suspects who may be highly owned, but should we be looking for differentials among them? Players like Gudmondsson, McNeil, Pepe, Son etc.

One can see the value in assets like sterling and co. But is it worth having 2 premium slots or is there better value in spreading wealth. Is son at 9.5 and kdb at 9.5 as an example not better than Salah and a 6.5?

              B. Trossard - > Ceballos

If Trossard is injured, B looks fine. If not, I'd be tempted to keep Jota for this week and then reassess.

              Downgrade Kane to:

              - Barnes
              - C.Wilson
              - Haller?

My other strikers are Pukki (and Greenwood)

I would have gone Salah and Sterling. I was naive in thinking Kane could match Sterling over the first three fixtures.

Double pool defence chewed up a lot of my budget so making changes without downgrading one of them was tough.

Fraser also killed me. Was expecting him to light it up again this year but Bou did not look up to it for the first 2 gws (that I owned him)

You dodged a bullet and made a good call. I was on Fraser early last year so was a bit of cloudy by getting those pts last year.

It would mean rotating Lundstram/Kelly/Cantwell/Greenwood for the last spot, but I prefer that over playing Ayew.

I'm 0.3 short at the moment, but will be able to afford it if James, and Abraham rise for a second time this GW, and Martial falls. All of which are likely.

It's a very good team. The only input I would have is to see if you could vary your team from the template a bit (depending on your strategy). Arsenal for instance have great fixture and usually score a lot of goals. And/or Son/Vardy/Maddison are others who won't be owned by many but have high ceilings and low ownership.

Good comment. I actually did have maddison&souyncu instead of zinchenko&james till yesterday, now i dont know which option is better? Souyncu could also be holding later... I also tryed to fit salah, kdb, sterling and pepe in my team but that didnt work out.

                A) Barnes in for Pukki this week on a FT
                B) Emerson out for 5.5 def
                C) Hold
