FPL Question Time – Consult our panel ahead of Gameweek 5

The international break has given Fantasy Premier League managers plenty of time to stew over their squads.

As has become tradition, a fair number of FPL bosses will have deployed their first Wildcards over the last fortnight as they look to overhaul their failing teams or consolidate a good start.

For those of us with the prized chip still intact or who have already burned it, we still have a number of conundrums to solve ahead of some appealing fixtures in Gameweek 5 and beyond.

To help you with any dilemmas, we’ve put together another panel of Fantasy managers to answer your questions.

WHO’S ON THE PANEL THIS WEEK?

Tom Freeman / avfc82 – A long-term member of and frequent poster to the Fantasy Football Scout site. Tom has five top 1,000 finishes to his name in ten years of playing FPL.

Aleksander Våge Nilsen – Currently eighth in the Fantasy Football Scout Career Hall of Fame, having had three top 1k finishes in the last five seasons.

FPL Hints – One of the most-followed names in the FPL community, a seasoned veteran as well as a Scout writer and an Official FPL panellist. Finished 110th in the world in 2011/12.

Greyhead – The writer of, among other things, our weekly Great and the Good series. Greyhead finished 85th in the world in 2018/19.

Legomané – Fantasy Football Scout moderator and current leader of the Mods and Cons league. Legomané finished 1,006th in the world in his previous best season of 2016/17.

Definitely one I’m considering mate, I want to do Wilson to Vardy eventually and annoyingly I’m 0.1 out so need to free that up from somewhere in the coming weeks; I would like Otamendi in my team tho

Nothing worse than being .1m short! See if Mount maintains his form, if he starts to get rotated due to Champions league then you could swap him out to free up the extra cash.

If he nails down a place in the team (no reason why he won't) then I recon he's a solid if unspectacular option. I've got a similar team but on Ceballos currently although he's more of a punt.

Yeah I feel he could tick over steady points and Everton certainly have great fixtures for the foreseeable future. Cellebos is a player I’ve enjoyed watching I’d just be worried about rotation and where he’s playing on the pitch, he could be a genius pick and at a steal of a price tho!!

    Thoughts on this?

    Pope
    TAA / Digne / Soyuncu
    Salah / Sterling / KDB / Mount
    Pukki / Haller / Abraham

Bench: Button / Lundstram / Kelly / Cantwell

Or was thinking of going 442 by playing Lundtram every week and upgrading Pukki to Vardy and Abraham to 4.5 fodder?

    Which would be better?

A lot of People seem to hopefully believe that teams like City and Chelsea will Field second string teams in the CL. Its not going to happen. The CL is the biggest Club tournament in the world, the players will want to play and the managers will want to advance. Its not as if the Chelsea players and Lampard will tell themselves "we have no chance anyway, Ill play Giroud even though Tammy is my first Choice striker". Or that Barkley will play Ahead of Mount in the CL.

Similarily Pep wont be playing a chop and change team before City are guaranteed to advance. Sure there might be some change as rotation is happening, but its just as likely that Sterling or KDB get a rest in the PL as it happening in the CL, especially With the easy run of PL games they have. Im not sure if it was last season or the one before that, but Pep made some comments after City failed to capitalize in one of the earlier rounds and secure the advancement that he would play his best available team until they were surely out of the Group. It will be the same this season.

TLDR: Expect rotation as managers will try to do well in both competitions. No-benchers will be punished in the upcoming weeks.

Always find it funny how so many on here seem to think the Premier League is more important than the biggest club tournament on the planet.

This. Every team in their Group is better than the lower table teams in the PL. So based on the Logic of resting players against bad teams the PL is where KDB or Sterling will most likely get their rest.

yep, pretty obvious that teams wouldn't favour PL over CL when the knockout stage comes round but the group stage is a piece of pisss

Yeah, it's a very straight forward group and I'm sure Pep will rotate his team at times but Shaktar away in the first group game is more difficult than a trip to Norwich.

I agree, I don't actually think we will learn anything long term this time because both City and Liverpool are playing their toughest opponents first time up - the rest of the games will be different imo; I won't be drawing any conclusions from the next two lineups for those two teams

I have no doubt in my mind that Pep will focus more on CL than PL if need be.

That being said, Pep has 2x A teams. So Aguero/Sterling could sit out in either of PL / CL. No reason to try and second guess it. Just have a decent bench at least until there are some clear signs to which players Pep prefers in CL/PL.

Last year Jesus was prefered in CL as far as I recall.

As for Liverpool, they usually just line up as strong as they can in both tournaments with only a few being rested (primarily the midfield and defenders)

Tinkering a bit, and I've come up with a team with 4 big hitters of Salah, KdB, Firmino and Aguero.

I quite like the balance of that. Other 2 mids are James and McGinn. Still have 2 premium defenders there in TAA and Digne too.

            Thoughts?

I do like to have two rotating goalies though, so I might stick Henderson back in as I've 0.8 ITB.

It was between Vardy and Firmino for me as well, Vardy may be a safer bet to be fair, with the international breaks Firmino is all over the world so may be a rotation risk especially with Liverpool going to Napoli next Tues.

Yeah nice, I've gone Digne and cheap 4.5 forward over Pukki and Ota, I think City are incredibly strong still but more vulnerable minus Laporte, can see them conceding a few extra maybe, and Digne is nailed for attacking returns.

                  Just give this a thought.

We all know that not even one Man City player is immune to Pep's rotation madness. Ederson can be an exception but who cares. All we care about is the outfield players, especially the attacking prospects. With UCL & cup games starting from next week, there are going to be 2 games per week!

And as I said, no one is safe! Aguero, Sterling, KDB! Everyone will get rotated at some point of time with the likes of Mahrez, BSilva, Jesus giving plenty of options to Pep.

The point is about DSilva! Do we see him starting in intense UCL games with so much travelling back & forth? He might play some cup games, might even play some UCL games! But I think he is more likely to be given PL minutes than other competitions!

DSilva might get benched in intense PL games as we saw against Spurs. But when we look at the fixtures, we can see that City have great fixtures and no intense games in PL with great home fixtures, which are very ideal games for DSilva!

Anyway, this is just my theory/opinion! You can never predict Pep! But yeah, DSilva is as vulnerable to rotation as other City prospects and as safe from it as others!

So from an FPL point of view, DSilva does make a great attacking option for City at just 7.5!

Personally would def not bench Pukki if the alternative is a defender. No CS is a given and I think Pukki has a good chance of sneaking a goal plus baps.

There is no way Pukki sneaking A goal is getting him baps + I think most would argue it isn't a 'good chance'

Ok maybe not baps but I could see the goal happening. More likely as a dying mins consolation though.

Fair enough. I just think if there is any fixtures I would bench a fwd for it's Man City (even with Laporte out). I'm forced to play Pukki as I have injuries so I'm hoping for goal, just not expecting one.

NCFC defence is in tatters with three CBs our and Aarons potential injury from last night. With Laporte out , the only thing they can hope to do is score goals. Pukki is definitely starting for me. I'll be at the game looking watching through my fingers!

                    Afternoon gents

Which move do you think is best for my lot below?

                    A) Save FT / G2G
                    B) Save FT but play Lunds over AWB
                    C) AWB > Pieters (FT)
                    D) AWB, VVD > Pieters, TAA (-4)

                    1FT 0.5itb WC still intact

                    Heaton
                    VVD, Zinch, Digne, AWB
                    Salah, Sterling, KDB, Mount
                    Pukki, Haller
                    (Button) (Lunds, Dendo, Greenwood)

Saving feels most sensible but sensible doth butter no parsnips.
VVD > TAA feels a luxury still for now.
I like the look of BUR defence and despite the cash saving it feels an upgrade vs AWB for now.

                    Appreciate your thoughts!
                    Cheers 🙂

A for me. Although I smell a sterling benching so your AWB/Lunds question may be moot.

                    Pope, (Stekelenburg)

                    Salah, Sterling, KDB, Mount, James
                    Pukki, Barnes, (Greenwood)

Really want to get Haller, would you sacrifice Mid to play 343 with Haller?

Yeah, downgrade one of Mount/James IMO to a 5th mid at 4.5, bench him and go 3-4-3 with Haller.

                        Not enough cash

Mount, James, Greenwood > Cantwell, Dedoncker, Haller

a nice 352, it’s all about whether Mount or James will outscore a third striker of the same value, personally I think they will

Interesting team, im now considering the same mid.

If i downgrade Zinch to Otamendi I can afford Pukki/Haller up top though..

Im currently planning to get rid of James and spend the cash upgrading bench of 4 players that can rotate for 11th spot Soyuncu, Cantwell, Lundstram, Ayew - worried about using WC and still having non playing bench in Greenwood and the 4.0 defence..

So do you have Vardy or no?

If I had I’d keep. If you just are using him as a pricepoint for reference I’d say best two options for next couple weeks are Barnes Haller, Pukki close behind due to MCI this week.

Price point reference mate, he will come into my team in a few weeks time, I have Pukki and brought in Wilson for Jota this week, just like to see other people opinions too, I’m realy fancying Haller but it would mean losing Pukki tho however his fixtures aren’t amazing, Man City the Next Burnley and Palace away. Two stubborn defences

Took a risky -4 at the end of last GW to do Jota Siggy VVD to Barnes KDB Lundstram. First hit of the season and was reluctant to lose VVD, but have Trent, was necessary to get KDB, got a potential gem in Lundstram and still have lots ITB.

Yep, either Rico or Dendoncker replacement the likely ones.
