Emerson speaks out after injury scare as Pukki scores again

Our international Scout Notes continue with a recap of Sunday’s matches.

As usual, we will be concentrating on only Premier League players as we keep an eye on minutes played, form and injuries.

Subscribers can view data on some of the matches listed below in our Members’ Area, with details available here.

Finland 1-2 Italy

  • Teemu Pukki (£7.0m) – 90 minutes
  • Jorginho (£5.0m) – 90 minutes
  • Emerson Palmieri (£5.5m) – 8 minutes

Emerson Palmieri (£5.5m) is an injury doubt for Gameweek 5 after limping out of Italy’s win over Finland on Sunday with a suspected hamstring problem.

The Chelsea left-back lasted just eight minutes of the match in Tampere but provided words of reassurance for his owners after full-time, Tweeting:

Very important victory today, guys. Unfortunately I had a small injury, but it’s nothing serious.

Italy boss Roberto Mancini added:

It was nothing serious, he stopped to ensure it didn’t get any worse.

Frank Lampard will hopefully provide us with an update on the defender later this week but Marcos Alonso (£6.2m) will be on standby for a recall should the Italy international fail to recover.

Emerson suffered his injury when chasing down Norwich City’s Teemu Pukki (£7.0m), who played the full 90 minutes.

The Finn had few chances in a game dominated by the visitors but kept up his fine run of form by winning and converting a 72nd-minute penalty to briefly draw his country level.

The Norwich striker has only failed to score in one of six matches for club and country this season, following his goal from the spot in the 1-0 win over Greece last Thursday.

The identity of Norwich’s first-choice penalty-taker remains uncertain following the woes from 12 yards last season: five different City players, including Pukki, took at least one spot-kick in 2018/19 and each missed once.

Pukki fizzed a shot narrowly wide of Gianluigi Donnarumma’s post just after half-time in his only other attempt of the match.

The Canaries’ striker returns to Carrow Road in plenty of time for Gameweek 5, having racked up 175 minutes of action over the international break.

Jorginho (£5.0m) completed 90 minutes for the second time in four days and was also on target from the spot to hand Italy the win, although the budget FPL midfielder seems to be further down the pecking order from 12 yards at Stamford Bridge.

The Chelsea midfielder was booked for a foul on Pukki in the first half.

Spain 4-0 The Faroe Islands

  • David de Gea (£5.6m) – 90 minutes
  • Rodri (£5.5m) – 90 minutes
  • Dani Ceballos (£5.7m) – 0 minutes
  • Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5.5m) – 0 minutes

There was positive news for owners of Dani Ceballos (£5.7m) as the Arsenal midfielder was handed a breather for the routine victory over the Faroe Islands on Sunday.

Having played 77 minutes in the win over Romania on Thursday, Ceballos was an unused substitute in Gijon for this latest match.

Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5.5m) was also on the bench, meaning that not one of the four Premier League-based Spain internationals on duty over the last week has played more than 90 minutes.

David de Gea (£5.6m) and Rodri (£5.5m), who both watched on from the sidelines in Bucharest, were recalled to the starting XI and had a comfortable evening against the Euro 2020 qualification Group F minnows.

De Gea had only two saves to make, both of which were from shots taken from outside the box.

Georgia 0-0 Denmark

  • Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) – 90 minutes
  • Andreas Christensen (£5.0m) – 90 minutes
  • Christian Eriksen (£8.8m) – 90 minutes
  • Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.9m) – 73 minutes
  • Philip Billing (£5.0m) – 0 minutes

Denmark were left frustrated as they drew a blank in Tbilisi on Sunday, with Christian Eriksen (£8.8m) producing a below-par display.

The Spurs midfielder, playing in the number ten role, recorded three key passes but his set-piece deliveries were once again found wanting.

Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) and Andreas Christensen (£5.0m) had a relatively quiet 90 minutes at the back as the Leicester goalkeeper was forced into making only one save.

Eriksen, Schmeichel and Christensen played all 180 minutes of Denmark’s two Euro 2020 qualifiers over the international break.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.9m) was part of a two-man central midfield for the Danes and lasted 73 minutes before being withdrawn.

The Southampton midfielder’s services may be required at left-back in Gameweek 5, with Kevin Danso (£4.5m) suspended and Ryan Bertrand‘s (£4.9m) availability still uncertain.

Bournemouth’s Philip Billing (£5.0m) was an unused substitute.

Switzerland 4-0 Gibraltar

  • Fabian Schar (£5.0m) – 90 minutes
  • Albian Ajeti (£5.9m) – 90 minutes
  • Granit Xhaka (£5.4m) – 74 minutes

Switzerland cantered to victory against Gibraltar on Sunday but the win may have come at the cost of an injury to Granit Xhaka (£5.4m).

The much-maligned Arsenal midfielder limped gingerly from the field of play on 74 minutes but downplayed the problem afterwards, saying:

I’ve been suffering from Achilles tendon pain for a few weeks now. It hurts now, but it should be okay otherwise.

Fabian Schar (£5.0m) and Albian Ajeti (£5.9m) both lasted the full 90 minutes but a home match against European minnows is ideal from a Fantasy owners’ perspective, given the lack of exertion required.

Centre-half Schar was indeed busier at the other end of the field, having three attempts on goal of his own and assisting Switzerland’s second goal with a superb cross from the left flank.

Despite his advanced role on the left of the visitors’ three-man attack, Ajeti was responsible for just two of Switzerland’s 40 shots.

Xhaka created five chances and supplied the assist for his country’s opener with a cross from a corner.

Sweden 1-1 Norway

  • Victor Lindelof (£5.4m) – 90 minutes
  • Emil Krafth (£4.5m) – 0 minutes
  • Joshua King (£6.4m) – 90 minutes

Victor Lindelof (£5.4m) came up against Joshua King (£6.4m) in the all-Scandinavian affair, with both players lasting 90 minutes.

King was more advanced than we are used to seeing at Bournemouth and registered a match-high four attempts on goal, all of which were from inside the Sweden box.

Lindelof has played a full three hours for his country over the last week, while King was withdrawn early in the 2-0 win over Malta on Thursday.

Emil Krafth (£4.5m) was an unused substitute on Sunday and returns to Newcastle United having played just 45 minutes over the international break.

Armenia 4-2 Bosnia and Herzegovina

  • Sead Kolasinac (£5.4m) – 90 minutes
  • Mohamed Besic (£4.5m) – 80 minutes

It was a familiar-sounding match for Sead Kolasinac (£5.4m) on Sunday, with the Arsenal full-back part of a suspect defence but getting forward plenty down the left flank to support the attack.

It was from Kolasinac’s run and cross that Amer Gojak tapped in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s second equaliser to bring the scores level at 2-2.

Arsenal’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan, now on loan at Roma, played a hand in all four of Armenia’s goals, scoring twice.

Mohamed Besic (£4.5m), one of the alternatives to John Lundstram (£4.2m) that Chris Wilder has on the books at Sheffield United, played 80 minutes for the visitors and picked up a yellow card.

Greece 1-1 Liechtenstein

  • Sokratis Papastathopoulos (£5.0m) – 90 minutes

Greece’s recent track record of posting some embarrassing results continued with a 1-1 draw with Liechtenstein on Sunday.

Arsenal centre-half Sokratis Papastathopoulos (£5.0m) played the full 90 minutes and had little defending to do as the hosts dominated possession but the Group J minnows struck on the counter-attack with five minutes to go – a backtracking Sokratis unable to catch Dennis Salanovic – to salvage their first point of Euro 2020 qualifying.

If you’ve still got Fraser he’s a possible hold in my book as is Martial. Who are you after?

Haller could be worth losing Fraser for anyway. Think he looks a great hold for quite a while. I’m hoping to run with him for the foreseeable in the role I hoped to have Jim in.

KdB is a big miss of course. Can you get a playable 4th mid from Martial Fraser to KdB?

No immediate issue - maybe roll the free to give more options next week with 2FT. e.g Walker & Jota to Ota & Barnes.

Button, Greenwood, Rico, Hanley - (0.7itb)

As you can see, my bench is atrocious. If Sterling gets benched this week, I'm pretty much playing with 10 men.

What's worse... playing with 10 men, or upgrading a defender on my bench for a -4 hit?

      Play 10 if necessary

I have the City 3 and reckon I might miss the triple up in both games. I’m calculating that any two of them in both games is likely worth it. I’m simply looking at 5/6 as a pair of fixtures.

          Kun KdB Sterling!!!

I’m guessing both KdB and Sterling will miss one each. Sort of tempted to get Mane for 3 confirmed mid appearances anyway across the two fixtures but he’s not part of midterm planning.

              Pope
              Robbo Digne AWB Lund Rico
              Sterling KdB Martial McGinn Dendoncker
              Kun Haller Pukki

Thinking of moving Kun on in 7 for Vardy and a big upgrade in midfield. Might get TAA then too or add a City defender.

Love the front three and the midfield! Can get pretty close to that by doing Salah and Greenwood to KDB and Haller but am concerned about putting too many eggs in the City basket. Might go Son or Pepe over KDB.

Pepe is right on my radar. Son is slightly lower on watchlist.

An alternative strategy is to go Auba from Kun - like Arsenal attack generally but don’t think I’ll be able to resist Vardy

It was slightly (well completely) daft - changed about 5. Really really wanted Pukki and it snowballed from there.

Could have done it with a minus 8 I guess. I was irritated at folding a killer team in week 1 which would have been well over 100 for a conservative pick that did decently but no more.

its a really tough call. i'd probably keep pukki just because his medium term fixtures are fine and he's not competing with another striker. but it's probably easier to make a coherent argument for barnes tbh

3 guns and spread some cash rather than 4 guns and dross 11th man & bench. Salah Sterling KDB (+TAA).

      As it stands;

      Pope Button
      TAA Digne Ota XXXX Lund
      Salah Sterling KDB XXXX Cantwell
      Pukki Haller Barnes

Just been spending some time browsing through articles and comments from this day in years gone by. Thought I'd share a few highlights from 'this day in FFS' just in case there are any other history buffs around...

    2008 - https://web.archive.org/web/20080913164456/https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2008/09/10/richards-shoulders-on/

Unfortunately by going this far back the web pages aren't displaying properly but I still enjoyed having a look. The first article of the day this time 11 years ago was devoted to Man City team news and attracted a whole 1 comment courtesy of The Littlest Hobo 🙂

Scrolling down the page also shows some cracking names on the watchlist - Steinsson, Wheater, Davenport, Bentley, Darren Fletcher, Zaki... a golden age.

    https://web.archive.org/web/20080914002822/https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2008/09/10/early-weekend-team-news-9/

Later on in the day the comments section is far more lively on the team news article, this RMT from Leighton caught my eye. Wow.

    Shwarzer (Cech)
    Clichy/Lescott/Wheater (Nosworthy) (Turner)
    Lampard/Bullard (c)/Nasri/Arteta (Lawrence)
    Yakubu/Zaki/Pavlyuchenko

    2009 - https://web.archive.org/web/20090915184408/http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2009/09/10/the-scoutcast-episode-eighteen-fantasy-island/comment-page-1/#comments

Looks like today is the 10th birthday of Mark and Granville's Fantasy Island Risks based upon the blurb to this Scoutcast, sadly the link itself is broken so can't be listened back to, such a shame 😥

    2010 - https://web.archive.org/web/20100915035333/http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2010/09/10/the-scout-picks-gameweek-four/comment-page-1/#comments

The scout picks were out, has it really been 9 years since Andy Carroll was dominating the scene as a budget striker? Also, Adam Johnson keeping David Silva out of the Man City team? Sheesh.

    https://web.archive.org/web/20100914132802/http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2010/09/10/paddy-says-gameweek-four/comment-page-6/#comment-854913

RBJ started a discussion about independent thought that involved Turbodog calling for an RMT forum and Katie getting flirted with. Classic stuff. Some of the names and gravs make me very nostalgic.

    https://web.archive.org/web/20100914132831/http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2010/09/10/the-weekend-team-news-40/comment-page-10/#comment-856321

Some proper heavyweights getting involved in a chat about the morals of various players cheating...

    2011 - https://web.archive.org/web/20110924020536/https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2011/09/10/the-knee-jerk-%E2%80%93-now-we-know/

The dust was settling on a shock Man City line up - Mancini unexpectedly preferring Aguero to Dzeko!

    2012 - https://web.archive.org/web/20121122061719/http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2012/09/10/scout-scribbles-krul-worry-for-magpies/#ffs-watchlist-4

For some reason I can't link to the specific comment but a quick scroll down the comments 7 years ago reveals a textbook post from an infamous Croatian complaining about his country being harshed. Lovely stuff.

    https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/2932601

Sadly the wayback machine won't allow me to display this in format the site was in at the time but today is the anniversary of the infamous "I'm back! Who are you? Please leave" exchange 😀

    2013 - https://web.archive.org/web/20130913224219/http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/09/10/scout-scribbles-toure-on-course-for-liberty-return/?hc_page=1#hc_comment_5510999

An absolute belter of a hot topic from Maxi. He was a complete nationalistic lunatic (or a superb parody of a complete nationalistic lunatic, I could never quite tell) but this was great.

I'm not looking any more today but I'll probably take another walk down memory lane at some point in the future, I probably won't inflict it on the rest of you next time but there's a chance some of the old timers still knocking around might get a smile or two out of some of this 🙂

This is amazing. Much preferred the site back in the day.

This may be a function of simply missing fpl when it was a smaller community, but I thought the level of discussion was better (and more intimate). The articles too, seem to be better to me. Reading the scout notes today seems like a chore, they're a mini novel without adding all that much more. Rewind to the scout notes articles linked above, and they were concise, gave you all the important information, and didn't overload.

This was a time when FFS was pure, unadulterated fun. Not just for the contributors, but perhaps for Mark too who started it as a labour of love. Currently it feels like a more complete repository of stats and information, but without the same soul and ethos it had.

Wow. Thanks for finding these articles, Greenie!

I opened the first one and was instantly brought back in a time machine to Fran talking with Akers. Akers was a great dude…not sure if he is still around. Fran was a complete mystery! We weren’t sure if she actually was a she, and maybe was an old lady, but wrote with such strange comments and always had enthusiasm.

RBJ was epic and shot from the hip…a lot like an unpolished version of the wisdom that we see from Trigg today.

I miss Puffinboy, the Necromancer, and several of the other great people. Cheers to Mark for creating such an awesome community and I have been super proud to be a part of it from way back then.

No need to double up on Liverpool defence. VVD and Laporte to TAA and Ota gives you perfect combination

    On WC! How's it looking?

    Adrian Button
    TAA Otamendi Lowton Lundstram Rico
    Salah KDB Pepe James Cantwell
    Aguero Haller Greenwood

About the Adrian pick! Alisson not coming back for at least 3 GWs which includes Newcastle & Sheffield!

If you're happy tying up that transfer down the line it looks great. Do you have the 0.1 ITB to get Pope?

Adrian & Pope both 4.6! And I have 0.2 ITB anyway!

Greenwood comes in almost every game! So 1 pointer there! Cantwell/Lundstram rotation! Rico a non playing 4.0 player!

      bench is a disaster

My bench was going to be Greenwood plus:

    A) Guillbert & Lundstrom

Frustratingly I am 0.1 short of going soyuncu over guillbert.

Would you keep it as it is, or drop lundstrom to afford Soyuncu, and go for Greenwood plus:
    B) Soyuncu & Kelly(Or someone other 4.0/4.1)

Not much in it, but I'd probably stick with A.

Do I need a Wildcard to fix my team? or what transfers do I need without Wildcard?

    Pope McGovern
    Robertson Diop AWB Laporte Lundstram
    KDB Martial Salah Cantwell Sterling
    King Wood Greenwood

I have 1FT left and 0.2 ITB in bank

-> So I definitely need to transfer out Laporte as he is injured for 3 months.
-> United doesn't look like keeping clean sheet so probably transferring AWB out to Soyuncu could save me 1.0 for other transfers and he is probably injured too.
-> King & wood are doing nothing and I have already lost 0.3 itb on them while pukki,Barnes,Haller, Abraham are doing great and increasing values.

If doing WC, I can probably kneejerk Robertson to TAA and also change Diop to Kelly and probably change Greenwood to someone who plays.

I am already in 2Million OR so I probably need to make some wholesale change but if I can keep my WC for December, it would be really nice

so I am not sure just change Laporte to Otamendi or someone else and hope King and Wood can produce something or just remove them as well with wildcard.

    What do you think?

you have waited this long, I wouldnt activate now, wait and see if martial/awb will be fit, if they are just do laporte to otamendi.

Decent case for WC but Laporte King to Haller Ota possible? If so that’s a decent fix this week. Midfield is model really and Robbo will return soon - I hope 🙂

Diop is a defo keep over Kelly imo who is marginal for any more appearances short term and has horrid fixtures anyway.

    Pope
    TAA, Zinchenko, Digne, Lundstram
Salah (C), Sterling (VC), De Bruyne, Mount
    Pukki, Haller

    Subs: Button, Cantwell, Greenwood, Kelly

    GTG?
