How to handle the emerging ‘template’ ahead of Gameweek 5

She may have enjoyed the first two Gameweek’s but she’s not as chirpy now! Having been 2-0 down in the General vs Mrs General head-to-head league, I’ve clawed it back to 2-2 and life is bearable again.

We can blame her for Raheem Sterling (£12.3m) registering a grand total of zero shots in Gameweek 4 as she triple-captained him. I won’t repeat what she said about him after the final whistle. Mrs. General owns Anthony Martial (£7.7m) and Aymeric Laporte (£6.4m) too so maybe the curse has been passed on to her this season, at least I hope so.

Things have been going smoothly for me with no major fires to fight aside from the misfiring Diogo Jota (£6.3m) who will be booted out of the battalion before the weekend. The Wildcard is neatly tucked away in the back pocket (why doesn’t anyone keep it in the front pocket?).

There’s been a lot of debate about the ‘Template’ in FPL this week. I mean, what does it even mean? One of the most common mistakes FPL managers make (and we’ve all been guilty of doing it at some point) is worrying too much about what others are doing. Looking at the teams of rivals in your mini-league or seeing similar teams posted on Twitter each week clouds our judgement.

It’s not about following the pack, the goal is the beat the pack. One of the hardest things to do in FPL nowadays is to focus 100% on your own team without being influenced by other factors such as the ‘Template’.

Focus on bringing in the players you believe will score you the most points and don’t worry about what anyone else is doing or saying. I like to think of it as having tunnel vision for my team only. Block out everything else especially when you sit down to make your transfer/captaincy decisions for the weekend. Trust your own judgement/research/instinct/eye test. FPL is a simple game which we overcomplicate. The only ‘Template’ you need to worry about is your own.

The international break and the upcoming Champions League/Europa League fixtures have been well covered already so rather than repeat what’s already been said, I’ll mention a few players/teams that we may be overlooking/are not being talked about much.

Jamie Vardy (£8.9m), owned by less than 10% of managers, has scored three goals in his last two matches yet he’s only the 22nd most-transferred in player ahead of Gameweek 5. Fixtures and his awkward price point are the main reason but Manchester United (away) and Tottenham (home) in the next two are not bad fixtures for Vardy. He loves a game against the ‘big six’. United and Spurs have managed just one clean sheet between them out of a possible eight. I have a feeling Vardy is going to be in a lot of teams soon. Those who own him already/move early for him despite the fixtures could be rewarded.

The North London clubs, Arsenal and Tottenham have great fixtures coming up and most of us don’t own many of their players if any at all. The four goals Harry Kane (£11.0m) scored for England during the break will do his confidence the world of good. It doesn’t matter how they go in or who it’s against. He’s got the penalty miss out of his system now too!

Son Heung-min (£9.5m) and Christian Eriksen (£8.8m) are worthy of consideration as well. It’s probably best to avoid the defence (the same can be said for Arsenal) until they show signs of improvement.

Nicolas Pépé (£9.4m) has the potential to be an excellent FPL asset. Liverpool (away) and the North London derby were tricky tests for him, but he passed the eye test and with a bit more composure in front of goal, he will rack up plenty of Fantasy points. At just 3.7% ownership, getting on him before the masses do could be a shrewd move. I prefer Pépé to the more expensive Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) who has spent a lot of time on the wing with Alexandre Lacazette (£9.4m) through the middle. We can’t trust Unai Emery to give Lacazette enough minutes to justify his price tag (he’s yet to complete 90 minutes this season). Europa League will only make things worse.

Looking at the Arsenal midfielders on the FPL site, there ar quite a few flags which bodes well for Dani Ceballos (£5.7m) who should start against Watford on Sunday. Like Pépé, he’s got all the attributes to be a great FPL option, we just need Emery to start him every week.

A few others who I think will score well over the next few weeks are Alex Iwobi (£5.9m) at Everton and the Fraser/Wilson (Callum) combo at Bournemouth which was back in action in Gameweek 4.

I’m going to spend the next 24 hours figuring out how to replace Jota with either Ashley Barnes (£6.7m) or Sébastien Haller (£7.5m) with two free transfers and £0.0m in the bank. One of Andrew Robertson (£6.9m), Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.6m) or John McGinn (£5.6m) will have to be reluctantly sold. A good headache to have, I guess. Or I could just get Chris Wood (£6.3m) and bank the other trans…..(slaps self in face).

Good luck in Gameweek 5 everyone and most importantly, enjoy your weekend. It’s good to have FPL back!

Cheers all. Will get two of them now that Trossard is injured; Mount seems a fairly obvious choice.

If I get James I could also get Haller later on, would probably prefer Lanzini but that limits my possibilities to get Haller

Risky defence but sacrificing some points at the back could pay off with the heavy hitting midfield, worth a punt, also only 2 moves to downgrade a mid and beef up defence if you want a change

With Rico, Kelly, Greenwood, plus a player who'll be rotated at times like Ceballos its a bit thin for my liking. I'd drop one of the City premiums and reinvest.

Rico not been playing, Kelly unlikely to when Sakho back, Ceballs rotation risk and Greenwood 1pt cameo late sub along with the deaddonkey - too high a price to get 4 high priced options in there.

Perez and Robertson > De Bruyne and Soyuncu for a 4 point hit.

Bit of a dilemma with Trossard out for sounds like minimum 4 games. Was going to bench and play Cantwell and carry transfer but going to quickly drop in price now.

Which option best do you think?

A Transfer with free to max 6 m defender- Cellabos
B Wait a week as planned playing Cantwell (with VVD home to Newcastle) and then do VVD to Otamendi and allows up to 7 m mid ( ( assuming Trossard drops.1m)
C Be bit maverick and get DSilva for Trossard and VVD to 5 m defender (for -4)

They don’t have any attackers left the way I see it. Murray Maupay and Groß are the only players they have that can fit in a front 3 now. The only chance one of those gets displaced is if Potter wants more pace up top so he moves March into the front 3 instead of Murray(?) and puts Bernardo at LWB instead

I've got a last 2 spots mid & def for 10.1m to fill may end up Matip + 4.5m mid but I already have TAA. Some rotation threat from Gomez during UCL but not to both at once!

Unless you want to sell Salah or sterling for KDB then I have no suggestion.

Take with a pinch of salt as I think Sterling will get 15+ points this week.

      * In October 2018, After playing double header and grabbing two goals for England, and days before a champions league match, Raheem remained an unused sub v Burnley (20 Oct 5-0).

      * In March 2019, After playing double header grabbing more international goals, he blanked away from home versus newly promoted team (Fulham 30th March 2-0 win, 88 mins)

FPL has a certain parallel to investment

If you could follow Warren Buffet's moves in the market and learn from when, how and why he sells or buys here and there, why not?

In the FPL market, we have the benefit of being able to monitor those who have a great track record over multiple seasons and we can learn from when and why they buy/sell/hold certain players

The "template" is a nice way to get a summary of the moves these the-great-and-the-good managers have made. It has been bashed a lot over this international break, but it might be a subjective issue rather than an objective one. When choosing a player who's out of the template, it's usually someone who's out of form. This isn't a bad thing, as form is based on past points and does not predict future points. However, the key to every differential move is: "Will this outscore the template move?" I had planned to get Pepe/Son in GW5 since preseason and had Martial instead of KDB, but KDB has proven me wrong so far and has shown he can keep this up for a while. I'd be HOPING for Pepe/Son to match/outscore KDB, while EXPECTING KDB to keep it up

When a differential move takes hope while the "template" pick has form, stats, eye-test, nailedness and fixtures to back him up... Why exactly should I ignore the template?

It's also easy to overlook the fact that you can transfer out a bad template pick (Perez) for a previously overlooked pick (Mount) when stats and other things back the move... And funnily enough, that move could emerge as the new template because the best managers are making the move as well. Ripping a good team apart to get the template isn't the best, I agree. But if you've got players you feel you must sell... I'd advise making the template move. It's much more than just moving with the crowd... Except if you are certain the crowd is wrong. Again, this "crowd" on FFS and among FPL Twitter influencers tends to be top 10K/50K, not the 6M FPL players. I consider this a safe place to be for mini-league wins

If you're gunning for top 100, absolutely ignore the template as it can keep you around 10k with few green arrows though

Do you play FPL for money? I don't think there's a parallel to investment unless have monetary gain/loss dependent on the outcome. It's a good way to test one's approach - play with significant money in mini leagues and your approach (to template, picks, hits etc) will differ

If you have tunnel vision for your own team, then why would people give you money 'fpl general'? Trust your instincts I agree but why consult an 'expert' at all then (presuming that's part of the service)? Are you not undermining your own business model? I dunno.

That is a good point on fplgeneral . I wouldn't pay for advice msyelf he is just an fpl player like anyone else. Last year proved that. I think those who do subscribe to the likes of FFS, FFF, fplgeneral, fantasy football hub - those subscribers like the idea of a 'safety net'.
It is also like belonging to an exclusive club.
          Are you a member etc.
The reality is most of the information these paid data sites for fpl can be got for free elsewhere - if you are willing to put the effort in.
Paying for fpl advice and info also takes away a lot of the hard work for some.

Expert will point out things you may miss or things you may not be aware of, but tunnel vision on your own team and decisions is more important than following the crowd or allowing your own mind to be clouded.

Expert offers thoughts out the box, and you can chose wisely what takeaways you get from it, but focus and own your own box.

The 'experts' all think basically all the same though. It ends up in a group think - they all listen to each other.
I have listened to very view of them/if any think outside the box.
Their thoughts are predominately reactive - based on an event that has just occurred rather then what they think may occur.

Just on fplgeneral's article above. Sometimes the template can be a good thing. It can provide a starting foundation for players early on in the year so they will not lose much ground.

I gambled big style with my gw 1 team
        - no salah or sterling 2m itb for planned gw3 transfers.
        - Treble liverpool defence and captained TAA.
It completely backfired Alison injured aswell,

Of course it was high risk, high reward. But there is also something to be said for 'playing it safe' at least initially until there is more data/games viewed.
It might prevent you from being 70 plus points 'behind the pack' after four gameweeks!

Makes me laugh tbh. The template always gets negative press when in fact all it is are the obviously best options that the best managers tend to think are worth investing in. These players aren't 'template' for no reason or because people are all robots or copiers. There is a limited pool of FPL quality players so you are bound to see the same names coming up.

Yeah I think it just requires a bit of balance. A few high owned good players, then work your way down from there.
The pool of players changes over time anyway as form/fixtures/price changes.
So it could be argued that 'the template' phrase is a bit of a misnomer. As you said it just happens to be the good picks at that particular time.

In reality he probably isn't - I image lots on wc have bought him in as a price-safe placeholder during the break but will likely not keep him come Saturday morning.

Similar is also likely true of Guendouzi - just looking for a permabench that's not going to hassle you with a price drop with almost all the 4.5m mids negative.
