Lanzini can provide cheaper route into West Ham attack

Now that the first international break of the season is out of the way, it’s time to make those all-important FPL decisions once again.

Differentials continue to play a part in that as we prepare for Gameweek 5.

Last time out there was more success for this column as David Silva delivered the goods with two nifty assists in Manchester City’s win over Brighton for a 10-point haul.

Is there another player with his quality waiting to be snapped up? Here are three low-owned players worth considering for Gameweek 5…

Manuel Lanzini

Lanzini has been West Ham’s most creative player so far this season

Price: £6.5m

Ownership: 3.3%

GW5 Opponent: Aston Villa (A)

It is no coincidence that West Ham’s attack struggled at times last season with Manuel Lanzini (£6.5m) sidelined by a long-term injury.

Now fully fit, the Argentinian has started all four of the Hammers league games since August.

For players priced at £6.5m or less, Lanzini is ranked joint seventh for final third touches (85). Due to his involvement with set pieces, he also averages 27 minutes for every chance created, which at present is better than the likes of Mason Mount (36 minutes) and Todd Cantwell (44 minutes).

With Sébastian Haller in-form up top, the expectation is for Lanzini to potentially increase his output of assists.

But he’s also more than capable of scoring, having netted 19 Premier League goals during his first three seasons for West Ham.

Dare I say it, is he a bandwagon waiting to happen? His next opponents are an Aston Villa team that have only kept one clean sheet this season having conceded more shots than any other side so far.

West Ham will relish such an encounter considering their recent goal-scoring run and without a doubt, Lanzini should be key to their attack on Monday night.

Son Heung-min

Son Heung-min (right) has been an overlooked Spurs asset after the first four Gameweeks

Price: £9.5m

Ownership: 2.7%

GW5 Opponent: Crystal Palace (H)

It’s surprising to think that a player with 38 goals and 25 assists over the last three Premier League seasons is owned by only a handful of Fantasy managers right now.

Then again, Son Heung-min (£9.5m) was suspended for the first two games of the campaign.

Tottenham have had a mixed and unsettled start to 2019/20. Son’s absence did not prevent them from scoring goals in their opening two matches but they certainly missed his energy up top.

Since his return to first-team action, he has already registered eight shots on goal, four of which were on target.

Son’s assist in Gameweek 4, winning a penalty for his team, could be an indication of what is to come.

He hasn’t scored so far, but based on his pedigree it won’t be long until he finds the back of the net again.

Tottenham’s next Premier League opponents are Crystal Palace and Son has scored three goals in five competitive games against them.

Having said that, he was playing in a World Cup qualifier in Central Asia on Tuesday night which could put him at a slight risk of rotation for Gameweek 5.

After all, Mauricio Pochettino hasn’t been afraid on occasion to bench the South Korean immediately after previous international breaks.

That’s the only concern with buying Son right now. But can Tottenham afford any more slip-ups? If he’s fully fit I see no reason why he won’t start on Saturday.

Danny Ings

Danny Ings has two attacking returns to his name so far this season

Price: £6.0m

Ownership: 2.2%

GW5 Opponent: Sheffield United (A)

It’s fair to say that there’s not been a strong collective desire to buy Southampton’s players over the past two seasons.

They are no longer a source of reliable clean sheets and it has also been hard to trust their attacking assets either.

The Saints’ fixtures since August haven’t exactly helped their cause either, having faced Liverpool and Manchester United in short succession.

In spite of these challenges. Danny Ings (£6.0m) has scored a goal and chipped in with an assist.

The forward has started three games so far and for forwards priced at £6.0m or less he has played the fifth-highest amount of minutes since Gameweek 1.

Of course, Ings hasn’t been playing 90 minutes per game regularly since 2015 as a result of serious injuries and squad management.

But last season he averaged a Fantasy return (goal or assist) for every 165 minutes played. That’s fairly commendable for a cheap priced and low owned player.

Having said that, Che Adams will certainly give him competition up top, but he has yet to score or assist in the Premier League and has also missed more big chances than any other player so far.

Southampton next face a Sheffield United team that has conceded four goals in their last two games which bodes well for Ings as he seeks to add to his goal-scoring tally.

I'm having same dilemma with my transfer (could even consider Stones). Would say Zinc as a better attacking option and choose him. But press conference means I'm a bit more unsure now with Mendy not far off a return and Laporte out for a long time. Although Stones is back as well so may be some Ota rotation. Some Zinc rotation seems likely with CL coming up?

Is there really any need for pep to put that strong of a team out? A real perfect opportunity to rest his international players ahead of the UCL game. Norwich’s defence looking real weak for this game

    1. Maddamotha
      • 7 Years
      4 years, 7 months ago

This is typical. People thinking that managers actually will rest their best players because the likes of Norwich etc are bad teams. This is the PL, and there is no way any manager will rest their best players because some teams are just that bad.

You might get 1 or max 2, if they have played a lot, but no way that Pep puts out a B-team because this is so easy...

He said the same as he said 2 weeks ago, hopefully he will be ready. I held him over the IB, because I thought he would be ready to this game. He might be ready for West Ham, but who knows? Im selling him to bank the 0.1, and get James for the rise.

Don’t see price really matters. James could be an ok call of course if you like him mid term. For me it’d be a minus 4 and don’t see James or Mount this week as worth it.

        1. have you seen cyan
          • 4 Years

yea thats my issue, Trossard to James would be for a -4 and I basically need James to score just to get 2 points out of it probably, when I can just play Cantwell and get those 2 points anyway.

            • 5 Years

Mount is more tempting than James to me. The next two fixtures are poor but after that he’s good. But that’s 3 weeks off and there’s CL to confuse things. Just playing Dendoncker here

yea I think I will play Cantwell unless I have a moment of madness and do Vardy and Tross > Pukki and Rich for a -8 which is more likely to pay off imo. But then it blocks me getting Digne the week after ffs

Yes Vardy would be part of my minus 8 too but it’s putting a lot of weight in that top 6 record.

Counting on captain Kun to make up the deficit here.

Well that Norwich news really shakes things up. I was already 50-50 on bringing in Aguero (C) for a hit, but not I just don't know if I can resist it. The temptation is massive. What other game this season can we feel so incredibly of confident an attacking return and high likelihood of double digits? If City actually take the game somewhat seriously it's hard to see anything but a bloodbath.

Could City even target a few team and individual records? Not sure I can watch 90 minutes of that without knowing I did whatever I could to get 3 attacking assets from the best team in the league.

Anyone thinking of taking a hit to go bigger on City?

I'm going to hold onto the TC chip, but I do feel a hit to captain Kun could really pay off. Opportunities this good don't come along too often though, so I can see why someone would TC him.

Sterling is the only City attacker to have played 360 minutes even Kdb has less... Midweek game in Ukraine also. I see Kun playing 90 minutes tho. Tomorrow will tell 🙂

Thanks mate, just a gut call on my part and I don't particularly rate the chip so if it fails I wont be too upset! I like some of your outside the box thoughts too by the way, GL for the GW!

I think it's worth the gamble. TC never goes well for me, like many others, so yeah why not? It would be some sort of miracle for Kun not to at score a goal, probably more. And in this game more than most you've got that little feeling in the back of mind that he might just get 4.

Thanks mate, GL to you too. Fingers crossed for some Aguero magic.

"Timm Klose doesn't need surgery but it won't reduce his time out and he will be out for 9 months," said Farke.

"Christoph Zimmermann is out until January. His ligaments are okay but it's a complicated injury.

"Grant Hanley is back on the training pitch but he is unavailable and so is Tom Trybull, who damaged his ligaments against West Ham.

"Patrick Roberts is ineligible, Moritz Leitner is out with his calf, Mario Vrancic is not available for tomorrow and Max Aarons is also out.

"Ben Godfrey came back with a groin strain from the international break and is a major doubt, while Tim Krul is also minor doubt."

I think Jesus is more likely to start with Aguero than instead of him. Sterling is the one who might get fully rested.

How tempted would you be to do:

            Laporte/Salah/Pukki->Lund/Pepe/Aguero for a -8?

(Can't afford doing it with Sterling rather than Salah)

          Bench order:

Which should I put in the first slot, Dunk or Cantwell? I am starting Pukki, Barnes and Zinc.

With the Martial news definitely need to ship him out now so whats best

          Heaton, Buttton
          VVD, Digne, Zinc, Lundy, Kelly
          Salah, Sterling, KDB, Martial*, Mount
          Pukki, King*, Greenwood*

          A) Martial + King > James/Iwobi + Haller (-4)
          B) Martial + Greenwood > Hayden + Haller (-4)

(Thought it was worth the risk. Starting to doubt it now.)
