Scout Picks

Sterling and Aguero tipped for big scores by Gameweek 5 Scout Picks

We have spent the big bucks on our Manchester City attacking assets this week as they face a Norwich defence in dire straits.

This week the Scout Picks XI features three players priced over £12.0m but we have still managed to stick to our £83.0m budget.

Our 3-5-2 formation comes in at £82.9m, £0.1m inside the limit.

Goalkeeper

Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian has an appealing fixture this weekend

Adrian (£4.6m) was not selected by any of our Scout Squad pundits this week, but we’ve brought him in as an enabler. There was overwhelming support for a double-up on the Liverpool defence but we only had enough in our budget for one of their premium options. With Alisson still out injured, Adrian should keep his place in goal.

Defenders

Alexander-Arnold remains our chosen Liverpool defensive option ahead of Gameweek 5

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.1m) was the most popular Liverpool defender among our Scout Squad pundits. David, Paul and Geoff all selected him as the best option in this price bracket, Neale choosing him in second place. The right-back heads into an appealing meeting with a goal-shy Newcastle side and three assists in his first four matches. The potential for a double-figure haul, made up from returns at both ends of the pitch, continues to be high for Alexander-Arnold.

The inclusion of Matt Lowton (£4.5m) was a way of granting the request from our Scout Squad for Burnley defensive cover. Nick Pope was a popular choice but we had to go with Adrian in goal. Lowton comes in based on Burnley’s clean sheet potential for a trip to Brighton, and having created more chances than any of his defensive colleagues so far this season.

John Lundstram (£4.2m) continues to make a useful budget enabler for Fantasy managers. Sheffield United remain one of the tightest-looking defences in the Premier League, having allowed just 22 shots in the box across the first four Gameweeks (fifth-best). Meanwhile, Lundstram himself is behind only two players in the top flight for big chances created.

Midfielders

Sterling should enjoy his trip to Norwich on Saturday afternoon

Despite a blank against Brighton, Raheem Sterling (£12.3m) is straight back in the Scout Picks. After the first four matches of the season, the Manchester City midfielder is still just one behind the current Golden Boot front-runner with five goals and during that time, no player has been afforded more big chances. Meanwhile, Norwich’s defence looks in tatters for Gameweek 5. They have conceded more than any other side so far and are likely to be without at least three centre-backs in Ben Godfrey, Christoph Zimmermann and Timm Klose this weekend. Furthermore, right-back Max Aarons has been ruled out, Grant Hanley is unlikely to be able to feature from the beginning and Tim Krul is also a doubt to start now.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) was the most popular midfielder for Gameweek 5, tipped as the best in this position by three of our pundits, David selecting him in second place. In both of his Premier League matches at Anfield this season, the Egyptian registered a double-figure haul and he will be fancying his chances against Newcastle. The Magpies might have the ability to frustrate top six sides, as they did at Spurs in Gameweek 3, but Salah still got three attacking returns against them last season.

Mason Mount (£6.4m) is one of a handful of mid-price midfielders who appear to have the ability to offer decent value this season. He has two goals so far and could have arguably had more than that. Ahead of a trip to Wolves, the Chelsea midfielder has registered the same number of shots on target as Sterling, and more than any other option priced at £6.5m or below.

The absence of some key personnel for Manchester United should both help Daniel James‘ (£6.1m) chances of starting and increase the need for him to deliver. In the last two matches, the value midfield option has had seven shots inside the box, the second-most in the whole division. With Leicester yet to keep a clean sheet on the road so far this season, James looks a good bet for more attacking returns this weekend.

John McGinn (£5.6m) is the final member of our value midfield trio as he prepares to face West Ham on Monday night. With attacking returns in two matches so far this season, the box-to-box option will fancy his chances against a Hammers’ defence that has conceded more big chances than any other side so far.

Forwards

We’re backing Aguero to have another enjoyable afternoon in Gameweek 5

Our Scout Squad panel was unanimous in selecting Sergio Aguero (£12.1m) as the best forward option for Gameweek 5. That decision was reached even before the Norwich defensive situation got worse on Friday afternoon. The Argentinian has scored in every match this season, currently leading the Golden Boot race, and is likely to deliver even if he has his minutes managed in light of Gabriel Jesus’ return from fitness simply because Norwich’s problems at the back are so bad.

Sébastien Haller (£7.5m) completes our line-up ahead of a trip to face Aston Villa on Monday night. Dean Smith’s men have allowed more shots than any other side so far this year, while Haller has three goals in his last two matches.

Substitutes

Nick Pope (£4.6m) was the most popular budget goalkeeper in our Scout Squad submissions but we had to bench him to accommodate our Liverpool defensive double-up.

We were also able to work in some Manchester City defensive cover so Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.6m) has to be content among the substitutes. With Norwich unlikely to park the bus against them, there is perhaps still a slight chance that they find a way through.

Manuel Lanzini (£6.5m) gets a place on the bench as a cheap alternative West Ham’s centre-forward. The midfielder has created more chances than any of his colleagues so far this season.

Ashley Barnes (£6.7m) has impressed in the early part of the campaign but we ran out of money to get him in the Scout Picks starting XI.

The Captain

As we have mentioned many times since the season began, the Scout Picks now has a captain for the 2019/20 campaign.

This skipper is chosen using the conclusions of the latest Captain Sensible article and a four-way vote between David, Neale, Paul and Geoff.

Because the use of Fantasy Football Scout data is used so heavily in this process, the captain we choose each Gameweek will be known only to those who have signed up to Membership for the 2019/20 season.

It will be revealed to the public only when the deadline for the Gameweek has passed.

The Community Champion

Representing the community against the Scout Picks in Gameweek 5 is Warby84.

They have gone for a 4-3-3 of Adrian; Alexander-Arnold, Otamendi, Maitland-Niles, Lundstram; De Bruyne, Salah (c), McGinn; Aguero, Haller, Vardy.

The community member who beats our picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season.

It was a defeat for the Scout Picks in Gameweek 4 as InsaneFC won by a 75-64 scoreline.

That makes his winning margin of 11 points the new score to beat for the 2019/20 season.

If you don't take the "man city factor" in account, it'd be most likely that Cantwell got more return that Dendoncker. So I'd go for Cantwell

For me it comes down to whether you want to set and forget or have a headache later on. Personally I'd go for B and forget about Soyuncu for a few rounds. Leicester is looking good for CS after they got new manager. They are actually third on table if you only count games since he took over.

    Query for the dead zone?

Is Fraser potentially good from 6? Started poorly of course but weeks 6-10 are gold for attack - better than Villa and SU in GWs 1 and 2. He returned last week and 3 blanks do happen.

(Dubious about James and waiting to see how CL falls for Mount - think I might prefer the other Wilson to both anyway - was well ahead of both in Champo and rate Chelsea and United as upper mid table only right now)

The thing with going against the template is that you have to be SURE your differential matches or beats the template. Fraser isn't the type to bring in weekly hauls, more likely to tick over... Will you have the patience to hold while more explosive cheap options are killing your rank?

That's what happened with C Wilson. Returns in every game, but I sold him for a higher rank and better use of the funds

I'd say get Mount and stop overthinking it. But if you love differentials, not much against Fraser or Maddison long term (super long term)... And nothing at all against H Wilson until Brooks is back. I quite fancy him for those fixtures, really. Bandwagon waiting to happen

      1. pingissimus
        • 5 Years

Yes - quite happy to tick over. Idve most certainly kept Callum if I had him - ditched at last moment preseason - he’s number 3 on my overall watchlist after Vardy TAA. Siggy is right up there too. Just floating the idea re Fraser for opinions

General strategy is to have at least one midvalue mid and forward I can park for several weeks. No plans to bandwagon hop.

Don’t rate Chelsea really but may get Mount sometime.

The preseason FFS comments template isn't actually doing as badly as they seem to be. At least not by the standards of individual players and previous seasons. Just so many explosions elsewhere... Oh well

You're the patient type, and that's a proven strategy. So yeah, Fraser merits a look-in or purchase. Would still prefer Mount though. Two tough fixtures (Wolves not so tough...) but from GW7, he might outscore others at that price even with some rotation here and there. As Lampard's golden boy and copy cat, I'm expecting him to be the EPL player while the likes of RLC and Barkley cover cups and UCL group stages... But this is just a guess

            Ah

Not the patient type at all really. Just posted my record below - hits galore last season and GW2 WC this. Just aiming to be really aggressive with hits this time and never sideways. My aggressive hits worked like a charm last time out.

Mount has also played so regularly because of injuries. He was on the bench against Norwich ,but played as Pedro injured in the warm-up. By the time Liverpool and Valencia games played Pulisic, Pedro, Willian, CHO, as wingers and Kante Kovacic Jorginho and Barkley May all be match fit. Mount may be far less nailed then than he is now, especially if desperate for points.

I want to agree, but feel West Ham's attack can also overwhelm AVL's midfield enough times in the game for a brace, even if it only takes two counters

Wolves would play on the counter and get many chances as well, of course

Took over 30 hits last season 🙂

Still made too 100k despite super duper casual start. I also had a lucky minus 8 streak - called it 5 times and it paid off 4 of those.

Being more cautious this time - if you discount a gw2 WC 😉 ( very very nearly aced that - wrong call on TAA Robbo and ditched Ward for AWB at last second)

I would lose one of KDB or Sterling and look at bringing in the likes of Vardy & Firmino up top, both nailed.

You can only captain one of Salah, Sterling or KdB therefore i think the funds can be better spread

Ayew seems like a knee jerk pick, i doubt his form will hold or he will continue to start games, so you would be better upgrading him and having a 4.5 mid on your bench

he scores most against top 6 teams that push on and don’t park the bus, his game is about being on the last defender’s shoulder and breaking the line.

I wouldn’t be too concerned about fixtures against Man U and Spurs and then his fixtures become as sweet as moms apple pie 🙂

Go with a 4.4 rather than Ayew, place him at 3rd sub and forget that slot
Bump Guendouzi up to Cantwell. I think you know Cantwell is a much better option, even if you bench him. He's a good option regardless of whether Pukki is in your team or not, as you aren't capping 'em anyway (Wilson + Fraser kind of combo, or your Burnley defensive double-up)
Keep the rest in the bank. You'd want it by GW7 for James to Mount 🙂

No Sterling or Aguero will be terrifying against a Norwich who let's in the lost goals in PL, and this round their missing 3 defenders as well....

How many do you need to play?

Palace defence fixtures couldn’t really look worse in the next 9. Zero cs wouldn’t be a turn up at all. That said they defied poor defensive stats all last season and Guaita has a simply immense record. He’s probs the most underrated player in FPL - his ownership is farcical.

Don't tell me this site has persuaded you.
You got him for a reason, he has already scored points and he is heading for the world record of easy fixtures.

Dont worry I've kept him! I was considering it be because even though he was getting returns, for 11m you need a bit more when that extra 4m can upgrade a budget mid to KdB and still have a Haller/Barnes/Pukki etc

At the moment you can have 2 forwards from "top 6" sides, Tammy and Martial in your side. (fitness permitting)
Then there is Barnes Pukki and Haller.
Is it worth going in the "top 6" direction or the deserved recognition direction?
I would like 4 of those 5 eventually, allowing for decent big hitters to fill the spaces.

I think Vardy will steadily score his way into the stratosphere this year

Martial looks ridiculously underpriced and over positioned now with 20:20 hindsight

Pukki & Haller both look to have very productive roles also

Barnes has 14G 3 A in his last 25, but is the one I would be most hesitant to sign

I would say top 6 doesn't mean that much anymore there is a top 2.
A talisman from any decent side can do just as well as a top 3-6 side. Who those four teams are I don't know. But Arsenal and Spurs probably score the most goals after City and Pool.
How is Martial in this list?

i am on Vardy Firmino as Tammy

Salah & KdB with James and Mount as my 3rd & 4th mids act as enablers, but I will have to be patient though and ride out a few game weeks when Aguero, Sterling or some other big hitter hauls.

Basically my Tammy, James and Mount are the equivalent of the 3 mid priced attackers, so it means I can have Salah KdB Vardy & Firmino as sort of ‘big hitters’

I have Bobby due to the eye test. I personally think Mount, as popular as he is, is going to let down a lot of people.
playing no 8 and not no 10. 2 fortunate goals. Rotation risk when all are fit. Playing for a very in and out team.

Mount is a risk but you have to gamble and have one of those in your team (remember Kane at 5.5, King two seasons ago) every now and then, and I have a playing bench so not too fussed

James Mount and Maddi are traps IMO. Something that served me well in this game over the years is hallelujah goals that offer early hauls are a trap. Mount and James fit in this category. Maddi is infuriating; his tally should be double what it is. Lanzini Iwobi and Mcginn are all priced to die for.
