Mané brace brings Salah value into question once again

Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle United

Goals: Sadio Mané (£11.5m) x 2, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) x 1 | Jetro Willems (£4.5m)

Assists: Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) x 2, Andrew Robertson (£6.9m)

Bonus Points: Mané x 3 Salah x 2 Firmino x 1

Liverpool secured a 3-1 home victory over Newcastle United to maintain their 100% winning start to the 2019/20 Premier League season.

A clinical performance from Jurgen Klopp’s side continues to fuel the fire of the Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) vs Sadio Mané (£11.5m) debate after goalscoring contributions from the attacking duo.

The lunch-time kick-off was a game that belonged to the Senegalese international after he opened Liverpool’s account with a fine strike, which cancelled out a special effort from Jetro Willems (£4.5m).

Sadio Mané scored twice for Liverpool in their win over Newcastle

Priced at £11.5m, a whole £1.0m less than his counterpart Salah, Mané’s brace alongside three bonus points means that he has now registered two double-digit hauls in 2019/20 – the same as his team-mate.

Mané did start this match as the centre-forward but actually improved once he had returned to his left-wing berth after a tactical switch from the manager.

Despite Salah also scoring in the victory over Newcastle, Mané’s appeal simply continues to grow given his attractive price and an ability to match the £12.5m man.

For managers looking to save the extra £1.0m whilst maintaining essential attacking coverage from Liverpool, opting for Mané is becoming an increasingly enticing option.

Mané then secured his second of the afternoon after poor keeping from Martin Dubravka (£5.0m), but the forward made no mistake to tuck away an important goal.

Salah did not have a particularly impressive afternoon but still found the net against Newcastle

It was initially looking like it would prove a concerning afternoon for owners of the highly popular Egyptian, with Newcastle suppressing his attacking involvement throughout the game.

However, the most captained player for Gameweek 5 lived up to pre-match expectation with a well-taken goal to put the game out of Newcastle’s reach.

It was a frustrating afternoon for owners of Liverpool’s full-back duo Andy Robertson (£6.9m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.1m), with yet another failure to keep a clean-sheet compounded by a number of missed attacking opportunities.

That said, Robertson did register his first attacking returns of the season with an assist for Mané’s opener.

Both Robertson and Alexander-Arnold went very close to scoring on Saturday afternoon

For those managers persisting in their faith of a Liverpool defensive double-up, Saturday’s result against Newcastle is yet another blow to the viability of such a selection.

With just one clean sheet in their first five Premier League fixtures, it is becoming difficult to justify investing in more than one of their defenders.

Klopp initially surprised Fantasy managers with his team selection, starting Divock Origi (£5.4m) up-front and dropping Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) to the bench after the Brazilian finished international duty in America in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Origi only last 35 minutes against Newcastle

However, Firmino was on the pitch after 35 minutes with Origi forced off with an ankle problem.

The centre-forward made a considerable impact with an exquisite assist for Salah’s opener as well as setting up Mané to register an eight-point score from the bench.

“We don’t want to leave Bobby Firmino out but from time to time we have to be sensible especially after long trips from wherever they come from.” – Jurgen Klopp

Despite the Belgian going off injured, Klopp did allay any concern in his post-match interviews that Origi could be out long-term.

“Hopefully with (Origi) it’s not too serious. He twisted his ankle and played on but felt it a bit too much.” – Jurgen Klopp

Newcastle’s own attacking assets staked their claim, after Willems opened the scoring with a fine strike in the seventh minute.

After receiving a through ball from Christian Atsu (£5.4m), the full-back found space in front of Alexander-Arnold, who did not apply much pressure, and drilled an outstanding strike beyond the reach of Adrian (£4.6m).

Willems scored a spectacular goal to open the scoring at Anfield

But once Liverpool had found their momentum, there was no doubt as to which side would be collecting all three points.

Steve Bruce set up the Tyneside outfit in a compact formation that enabled the likes of Jonjo Shelvey (£5.0m) and Miguel Almiron (£5.9m) to form counter-attacks to feed Joelinton (£5.9m), but the attacking overload that Liverpool are so often able to provide was too much for the Magpies.

Fabian Schar (£4.5m) did leave the Anfield turf injured, but Bruce confirmed that the club was hoping it was an issue of cramp as opposed to a muscle tear.

“It’s the calf, we’re not sure if it’s cramp or a tear. The medical department say he does suffer from cramp a little bit. We do hope it’s that.” – Steve Bruce

Whilst an upset similar to the 1-0 away win over Spurs was truly on the cards after Willems’ opener, Liverpool’s quality prevailed and the likes of Salah and Mané put Bruce’s side to the sword to continue their perfect winning start to the season.

Newcastle’s game-plan was evident from the outset, with Steve Bruce’s setting up in a compact formation that provided abilities to break on the counter-attack, but Liverpool’s mesmeric duo in Mané and Salah proved to simply be too much for North-East side as they cruised to an impressive victory.

Fix your 4th defender instead. Rico wont be playing and Lundstram wont be getting any points. Lundstram will average 1pts per game for next 5 games or even less.

It did. But if the next player kicks it into the keeper it bounces away then I was not sure the rules around this. If Mane shot and it was saved the he scored it would not have been an assist so I'm not too sure.

FPL tweet said something about the keeper's touch not affecting anything. As someone who owns Boddy but neither Sadio nor Mo, allow me one mere assist in lieu of the 100 points he deserved for that no-look double-back-heel half-nelson triple-pirouette.

KWP needs to be sorted, Montoya COULD be back so i would just leave and pray. Kiko was preferred by Gracia, so see wether he plays under new manager also. Away to City though so uh. If KWP out for similar price then there is little to be amused about. If you have about 0.5 itb then there is lot more to choose from. If not, then i might consider a -4, downgrade VVD to Matip and then you can choose someone up to 5.9. I would anyway wait for news on Montoya, away to Newcastle is ok ish. Burnley def is the easy route. My take is that doing a downgrade of VVD and upgrade KWP is better in the long run, but hits for defenders is not wise in general

I don't think so. You'd be chasing lost points. The way I see it, after yesterday's set back, Pep can't afford to rest or rotate his best players and those 2 will be at their most dangerous in the next few games (says a burnt owner of both and Kev).

352 could be on the cards with Kun and Raz/jesus st, mendy and cancelo wingbacks and 3 in Cb to control possession better + Walker could be a leader at the back.

          • 7 Years

If anyone comes in it is Fernandinho as CB, he is a leader. Walker is error prone and not a leader. Zinchenko is hardly amongst 5 best left backs in the league, Cancelo and Mendy is far better attacking than they are defending. 3-5-2 could be an option but then Pep must bench a lot of offensive players, not sure that is wise. And it would perhaps be more 3-4-3, who´s going to play in the middle? KDB and Rodri? Gundogan? Kun, Raz and one Silva/Mahrez? Dinho has almost none playing time since february, the 3-4-3 does not suit either Silva´s, Jesus is not good enough, Rodri is too slow and playing three at the back with so Stones, Ota and one of Walker/Dinho/Rodri, it kind of needs good ballplaying defenders to do that, and none of them except Dinho is in that category. I think he tweaks before watford, but how is impossible to tell, even after Shahktar wednesday.

I think for the PL, Pep will suck it up and aim to outscore the opposition. It's in the CL where he needs to work out how to plug those holes in defence, maybe with a double-pivot of Rodri and Fernando shielding Ota and Stones.

For our purposes, don't have any City defenders, is all.

It’s debatable who is the better player. Mane has outscored Salah in 2019, without penalties, and looks lethal at times. Salah is however well owned, on penalties and looks equally as lethal in most games. I personally think you chose one and stick. I chose Salah (after flirting with Mane for one GW).

Could become some nice options along the way, Arsenal fullback, Emerson, etc. But yes, City and Pool seems to be not that fortress atm, on the other hand it´s hard to find budget defenders that offers more than the occasional CS. I think in the long run, having three slots around 5.5/6.5 could emerge to be fine and also flexible, as if you have 3 rotating defenders at 4.5m or lower you can find yourself in a bit trouble if one of the 5.5 def suddenly starts delivering. And i don´t belong to the old school that you have to stay with your defenders, to me they can be chopped and changed like attackers. Hence why i like the idea now to get Kola in (with the prospect of perhaps getting to nice home games before Tierney is ready), then Emerson in for his nice run, and Lowton is there to rescue me if Kola is benched.

Just watched the City game - Stones and Otamendi looked like pub team defenders!
And Buendia...wow, he bossed the game, cracking player!

and i played Lowton and Lund before Pukki. Second time i played a defender over attacker in 3years. Difference between an average week and a good week. Keane and lanzini to play so hopefully something good to come out of those two diffs, like a goal from set piece and Lanzini outscoring Haller, but not likely ofc. No show also good, as Pukki will come in-)

Eh, after that performance, hm not sure Pep plays him. Made a mistake vs Bou as well that did not lead to goal but should have been. And, Stones was the one who started the season alongside Laporte. Problem for Pep is that Ota is the sole real warrier on set pieces, so that leaves them potentially even worse on set pieces against. He could play Rodri or Dinho there, but while he then gains in ballplaying quality he will lack in other areas. What he can do to compensate on lost combats strengths is to play Mendy, while he is defensively unstable he is a big lad. But he will last like 5 games so not a long term solution

Backline exactly the same except Adrian for me

Mid was martial kdb sterling Salah mount, went martial to lanzini this week when the injury need came out, have pukki upfront and nothing worthwhile on the bench so have to play lundstram. Got money itb since the martial to Lanzini move not sure what to do next yet. Probably go cantwell and upgrade striker

I see Lanzini should do well

i would downgrade son/sterling and get two forwards for greenwood n wickham...tammy and haller

Will do Greenwood and Wickham to:

                                  Haller+Tammy
                                  7.7mid?

Should I do Lanzini to Mount? I know Lanzini hasn't played yet but maybe Mount is a better season prospect.

I think Mount looks good and lampard clearly can coach attacking football so he'll be in the points and if both were guaranteed the same minutes i'd back mount. Wait for the champions League though, not sure how lampard is gonna treat that

Would u do Sterling + Martial -> KDB + Son....

I would then only have KDB from city, got Auba for captaincy

If you have Mane/Mo do it, better to have 2captain options
