How the top 10k FPL managers set up for Gameweek 5

A number of Fantasy Premier League managers inside the top 10,000 deployed key chips for Gameweek 5.

5.2% of them opted to use the Wildcard over the international break, while 2.6% went for a Triple Captain.

With each passing Gameweek, the top 10k becomes less and less influenced by those who used multiple chips in the earliest rounds.

With Gameweek 5 now in the mix, only 37.9% of those in the highest echelon of FPL have deployed two chips.

12.7% have used three while 3.8% have already committed four of their chips.

As things stand, 32.2% of those in the top 10k have now used their Wildcard and we can also take a look at which players were the most popular in the Gameweek 5 editions.

By far, the most fashionable option in Gameweek 5 Wildcards among top 10k managers is Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne (£9.8m).

He has been selected in 77.2% of such squads, 7% more than any other player – which made for plenty of frustration when it was revealed he was on the bench for the trip to Norwich City.

Behind the Belgian is, not surprisingly, budget Sheffield United defender John Lundstram (£4.2m), who has been racking up regular game-time in the Blades’ central midfield trio.

Interestingly, it would appear that a number of Fantasy managers at the top level are opting for a double-pivot of bargain bucket defenders.

41.8% of top 10k managers who Wildcarded for Gameweek 5 also included Crystal Palace’s injured centre-back Martin Kelly (£4.1m) in their side.

That brings the total of top 10k managers in possession of both Lundstram and Kelly to 23.7%.

It is clear that the double savings in defence were influenced by interest in the more expensive Manchester City attackings.

Raheem Sterling (£12.3m) was snapped up by 66.2% of top 10k Wildcarders for Gameweek 5 with 58.4% going for Sergio Aguero (£12.1m), making him the most-fashionable forward in such squads.

Interestingly, a total of 30.2% of the top 10k Wildcarders opted for both players in their brand new squads, although the two combined for just one attacking return against Norwich.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), who scored nine points in Saturday’s lunch-time game also features in the Wildcard picture here with 65.4% of those wielding that chip among the top 10k retaining faith in him.

The 35.7% who brought in Tammy Abraham (£7.2m) will be very happy with his huge haul away at Wolves and it’s interesting to see that he was preferred to fellow goal-scorer Mason Mount (£6.4m), who did not feature among the most popular midfield assets.

Instead, the man in that price bracket who drew the attention of Wildcarders in the top 10k was Daniel James (£6.2m), although he blanked against Leicester while Mount found the net late-on at Wolves.

We saw that Gameweek 3 Wildcards at this level largely featured a disposal of Liverpool defenders, but they are clearly back in fashion despite failing to keep a second clean sheet of the campaign against Newcastle.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.1m) and Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) both feature among the most popular defenders in top 10k Wildcards, the right-back selected in 45.9% of these and his centre-back colleague in 29.9%.

Gameweek 5 Captains

Meanwhile, there was a big difference between the top 10k and everybody else when it came to choosing captains for Gameweek 5.

Those in the upper echelons largely favoured Aguero, with 39.1% of them handing the Manchester City man the armband.

Salah was backed by 30.9% and Sterling 19.2%.

The vote was much more evenly split from an overall perspective with Salah just about the most popular with a share of 23.3%.

Sterling was just behind him on 21.5% while Aguero was off in third place with 15.4%.

Not surprisingly given Norwich’s situation coming into Gameweek 5, there were also a number of Triple Captain chips deployed in the top 10k.

As already mentioned, 2.6% of them played this enhanced captaincy chip.

The majority of these were played on Aguero, 1.2% of those in the top 10k choosing the Manchester City forward, 0.6% on Sterling and 0.6% on Salah.

Do Norwich change anything playing away? Wondering if playing Cantwell is only an option at home (have pukki as perma-play)

Choosing between him and Ceballos (the former obviously allows cash itb) in for Dendo to give context.

      Not sure.

Buendia is the option if you want to play him every week imo.

Cantwell will tick along (probably pretty unpredictably), but yesterday's game will be a rarity in that all of Norwich's chances were borne out of a team losing the ball high up the pitch and being unable to defend. Lower opposition won't provide that type of opportunity often and it's the more creative players (Buendia) that will profit more often.

Do you reckon GW's 2 & 3 were rarities for Cantwell also? He surely can't keep doing this

Not rarities, no. He will get some assists and goals over the season. He's a good option. Buendia is a better one though, imo

    WC thoughts?

    Heaton
    Lowton, Lundstram, Digne
    Mane, Sterling, KDB, Son
    Haller, Abraham, Pukki

    McGovern, Dendoncker, Soyuncu, Hanley

Feel I’m missing Mount and Arsenal, but can’t have them all.

I’m thinking about this regarding moving funds from def to attack, only having 2 premium defs as cs has been few and def’s attacking points have been inconsistant so far this season.

These 3 attackers seems to have the same value/give as much points as most 6-7 mill defs and mids

    Pope
    TAA - Digne - VVD
    Mane - Sterling - KDB - Mount - Cantwell
    Pukki - Barnes

    (Button - AWB - Lundstarm - Wickham)
    1.0m & 1ft

    VVD to a 4.5m defender ?
Frees up cash for Wickham to 7.5m striker (Tammy/Haller) next week and shift to 343.

If I don't sell VVD this week I probably won't do it when Pool is against Sheffield next week.
Think it's pretty much essential to have 3 striker atm and shift money from def to attack?

I may downgrade a def and upgrade Greenwood to Tammy to get this front 8..

    Salah Sterling KDB Mount Cantwell
    Pukki Haller Tammy

    Concerns :
    -it will cause benching headache.
-Weakens defence - digne zinch 4.9 lund montoya

    Would you advise those moves?

    B) No

      A) benching headache is much better than seeing 1 and 2 pointers everywhere in starting 11 and bench

Tammy has 7 goals from 2.4XG last 3 games

    We need a new metric

Probably using xG the wrong way 🙂

For me, xG delta/shots over an extended period of time highlights the quality of a player's finishing.

xG shows the average quality of a chance, not the quality of a chance for that player.

I actually try to avoid using it as I personally don't rate it as an effective FPL decision making tool over the short windows within which we have to operate

Mcgoldrick's 2 big chances and 0.37 XG in GW1 were another blip

For me the sample sizes need to be so huge (hundreds if not thousands of games) that it's really more of a placebo than anything!

Can be useful for some I suppose though if you don't have time to watch games, but the eye test beats it every day of the week for me anyways

I've applied it to the past 2 seasons worth of data and ended up with some interesting results.

Jesus finishes right at the bottom, along with the likes of Barkley, Pogba and Richarlison.

Notable names at the top: Lucas, Sane, Martial, Anderson, Mahrez, Son, Mane, Aguero, Salah, Bats, Deu, Gross, Eriksen, Sterling, Zaha, KDB, Kane

In the middle, we have Wilson, Rashford, Jota, Auba, Maddison

Yeah I think there's a fair bit of confirmation bias with it sometimes as well, and sometimes will just drive decisions that are so far poorly correlated with FPL points that it's scary - for example avoiding Pogba when Ole came in killed a lot of people last season... We also don't really need XG to tell us Salah, Mane, Sterling etc are good FPL players 🙂

I think when you peel it back its just not really adding a huge amount as a predictive tool for 4,5,6 game windows, albeit it does exactly what it says on the tin and can be an interesting reference point looking backwards

the thing is even strikers that we think of as exceptional don't vastly outperform their xG over the course of a season, for example Aguero's xG delta was only 0.47 last season

Kind of doesn't matter with Tammy. His conversion rate is unsustainable, but even if he was hitting his xg it would still be good value given his price.

    Heaton
TAA - Digne- VvD - Zinchenko
    Salah - Sterling - KDB - Mount
    Pukki - Jota
    (Button - Lunstram - Dendoncker - Greenwood)

Is this team WC ready? Not too confident in the Liverpool double-up (nor having a City def), Jota needs to go, and Heaton is probably not the best 4.5 option.

Salah, Sterling and KDB. This leads to the rest of many teams looking the same. The template.

          Then...

          Haller Pukki Barnes.

You more than often see the same as above.

Not a bad team you have but one or two changes could see you beat the template.

    Digne, Zinky, Pieters (Lundy, Kelly)

    Vardy, Pukki, Haller

Sometimes reading posts or listening to certain podcasts I often read/hear things such as "can't keep it up" and "will regress".

This may be true in many cases, but it's often a lazy and easy way to ignore or dismiss an option.

Why can't they keep it up? Just because it hasn't happened before? Things need to be assessed on a case-by-case basis rather than branding this kind of idea around all the time.

I'm specifically thinking along the lines of Norwich and Pukki here, but the same could be said for any player/team. Wolves were a good example last season - for anyone who watched the Championship they were clear candidates to finish top 10 in the PL.

    1. FOO FIGHTER
      • 4 Years
      4 years, 7 months ago

Keep Pukki, he is keeping up and passed they eye test plus he is Mr Norwich. Pukki will just get better.

Tammy? I would get him in if he continues with his form. Even though he has good fixtures after Pool, I do not see him staying at the level he is now.

    2. Cok3y5murf
      • 7 Years
      4 years, 7 months ago

It depends when they say it.

For instance, if a player has had a 40% conversion rate so far, that will definitely regress (which isn't a bad thing) because no one finishes that high. But on the other hand, people saying Mane was overperforming last season and will regress was nonsense. Outperforming their xG is a good sign as they are world-class players and they are expected to outperform their xG because xG measures the likelihood of an average player scoring.

Pukki will obviously not keep this up every week, but he doesn't need to! He started at just 6.5. If we see signs of Norwich losing form, we can sell.
